Cyber-anthropology: a new study on human and technological co-evolution

Abstract:For the first time cyber-anthropology is defined as a concept and a new field of study aimed at the analysis of person's reciprocal relations with the computer-generated (CG) world evolved as a result of technological progress. In the cyber-era, simulated reality has come to the point of becoming a force that has the potential to transform the human race. Digital beings such as virtual and embodied agents, although not a part of the natural human habitat, have become necessary elements of people's surroundings and life conditions. As a theoretical construct, Cyber-anthropology is concerned with the merger of natural and artificial worlds mediated by the human imagination, as well as compatibility between people and digital life they have created. As an empirical study, Cyber-anthropology deals with the psychophysiology and psychophysics, semantic and semiotics of human engagement with computer-generated reality that is viewed as a Complex Interactive System. Personal competence as a crucial element of any cyber-system underlines the importance of psychological culture in artificial world exploration. A newly developed concept of Psychological Culture is viewed as an essential part of Cyber-anthropology while concentrating on the following core issues: (1) ethical questions, such as whether or not technological tools can be employed to solve human problems; (2) moral consequences of bringing cutting edge technology into our every day life; (3) studies of individual differences regarding psychological competence of technology users through effective vs. ineffective, independent vs. addictive, and active vs. passive dichotomies. Psychological Culture is defined as the study of a person's competence associated with the use of modern technology and individual acceptability of technological innovations. Several crucial dilemmas arise when a human being is engaged in a simulated environment, and artificial agents inhabit a human world. The ultimate goal of Psychological Culture is to provide people with the knowledge necessary for adequate recognition of scientific innovations to overcome obstacles in the process of implementing technology to enhance human well being.

Abstract:The social nature of the web society is web economy, web culture, and web community. Psychological analysts consider the web one of the media and tools of the web subjects; post modernism upholds that the web subject is a kind of object which can define itself, while social critism theory insists that the virtuality, equality, and multi-dimension of the web subject is the betrayal, and rejection of the real world. Based on the theoretical analysis of Phenomenology, this essay proposes that in the web community, the nature of the web subject is the transition from the relationship between the subject and object to the relationship of the theoretical reality. The web subject is a kind of subjective nature, which reflects the experience of the other's spirit and of the other me. Web reflects intersubjectivity.

Abstract:The cybersphere constitutes a global disagreement space where the contested, ongoing ties that link states and the internet come into being. In this paper, a critique of sovereignty and political economy is offered to evaluate contemporary controversies concerning authority, independence, regulation, and access to communications as matters of relationality, materiality, and disagreement. We review China's promotion of cyber sovereignty as a complicating episode that reflects the development stresses of the sphere. China wishes to establish guardrails for the practices of multipolar global digital capitalism; yet, it has ushered in a variety of internet-related global issues, including in security, privacy, material well-being, developmental justice, and planetary futures. These complex aims invite and expand the dialectical spaces animating the cybersphere.

Digital Existence - the Modern Way to Be

Abstract:This is an interpretative viewpoint blending perspectives to form a composite view of digital existence. The paper uses philosophy, sociology and linguistics within an ethnographic framework of contrasting cultural and cultural artefact views. Digital being and the relationship between physical and virtual are discussed. Evidence suggests acceptance of the virtual world as a location of coexistence. How technology has merged with humans so that humans have become more than their organic selves is examined. In a virtual world, digital existence is achieved through Daseinian avatars and so the concept of self is explored. There then follows a broader discussion about the online world which leads into how these new technologies become accepted by individuals and society. The influence of mass media is considered in this context. This is followed by a short analysis of the vocabulary used to describe the online world. The paper ends with a call to rethink how to view and react to the online world. Existing positions are challenged as being inappropriate given the analysis undertaken.

Abstract:Cyber-Individual, with a short term 'Cyber-I', is a real individual's counterpart in cyberspace. It is closely related to human-centric computing ideology which focuses on placing human in the centerof computing. The study on Cyber-I tries to re-examine and analyze human essence in the digital era. Cyber-I's vision is to create a unique, digital,comprehensive description for every real person being in the cyberspace. Human's social context, mood, temper, physical status and so on also need to beconsidered for such a full description. Further research on social computing, antropology, human behaviour study, psycology and other fields/disciplines are required to enrichCyber-I concept, meanwhile, Cyber-I will also raise new problems to these fields/disciplines. The IT technologies on the whole including ubiquitous computing, pervasive sensors, wired/wireless networks and clouds will bring Cyber-I vision into practice. In this paper, we first present the Cyber-I concept, its important characteristics and basic architecture. Then, we discuss the special features of Cyber-I as compared with other related concepts and studies including AR (Augmented Reality), HCI (Human Computer Interaction), AI, artificial life, etc. The Cyber-I layered architecture and basic elements are described in detail, and the associations between Cyber-I and the corresponding real individual are explained as well. Finally, fundamental problems and challenging issues brought by Cyber-I are addressed in terms of necessary technique, security, privacy, ethic, philosophy, etc.
Cyborg in the “mirror” of philosophical reflection (using the example of the game “Cyberpunk 2077”)

Abstract:The cyborg is the most important futurological character, and its analysis is the purpose of this article. In order for the understanding of the Cyborg not to be limited to the idea of the complementation of man and machine, philosophical reflection is required. Methodological basis of the research: the method of topological reflection allows analyzing works of mass art as the “subconscious” of culture. The author analyzes the topos and the Cyborg concept, comparing them. The article considers the computer game “Cyberpunk 2077” as a Cyborg topos. The concept of the cyborg is analyzed mainly on the example of the philosophical concept of “cybergotics” (N. Land). The author suggests a thought experiment: taking into account the arguments of the “materialistic” direction of media theory and the concept of a Cyborg, present the concept of a game about a Cyborg, and then compare it with the analyzed topos. As a result, it becomes clear that the concept and the topos of the Cyborg represent opposite cultural strategies, although we are talking about the same futurological character. This internal conflict allows us to talk about the Cyborg as a “new Proteus”: he is “multi-faceted” and is associated with the “art of concealment”. The Cyborg “hides” deep intentions, and this prevents us from considering the Cyborg in the spirit of exclusively transhumanism. The author shows that the connotations of the machinery in this image are related to the needs of the “upgrade”. It is designed to preserve human identity. The scientific novelty of the research is to develop a reflexive approach to the Cyborg as an important media figure, as well as to explore its futurological potential. The differentiation of the concept and the topos allows for a more comprehensive view of a complex cultural phenomenon. A new interpretation of the Cyborg is proposed. The results of the conducted research can be used in philosophical futurology (as arguments against excessive optimism of transhumanistic ideas), in media studies. In addition, the proposed approach can contribute to the development of the method of topological reflection.

Abstract:Possibilities opened up by scientific-technical developments of the last century have led to the breaking up of our basic concepts regarding elementary aspects of human life. Boundaries are more easily crossed (also among genders); the reality of functions and the functions of reality are becoming interchangeable. The audio-visual galaxy, which has evolved over the course of the 20th century, with its two dimensionality has resulted in generations growing up in the past decades who have learnt that the "other" can be a virtual body: the sensual is no longer an essential part of human relations. The somato-affective aspects of the experience get split off-relationships emerge between bodyless minds. This fragmentation also means that the body is seen increasingly as mindless: the linkages between body and mind are profoundly undermined. Reality and fantasy melt into one another. Reality control and thinking becomes insecure effected by a view of the world that has lost its keystones of orientation. When body boundaries get confused in such a manner how do ego boundaries develop? How will primary relationships alter among such conditions? What will the internal images of the objects be like? The deconstruction of our basic concepts about space, time, dimensions, body- and ego boundaries made differentiation and the processes of symbolization extremely difficult. Postmodern ideas, questioning the validity of facts have contributed greatly to transforming our image of reality also on a theoretical level. How do these massive changes effect our daily clinical work and our theory of the mind? My paper tries to explore some experiences and ideas related to these questions through clinical cases and narratives of our present times.

Abstract:Cybernetics saturates the humanities. Norbert Wiener’s movement gave vocabulary and hardware to developments all across the early digital era, and still does so today to those who seek to interpret it. Even while the Macy Conferences were still taking place in the early 1950s, talk of feedback and information and pattern had spread to popular culture – and to Europe. The new science created a shared language and culture for surpassing political and intellectual ideas that could be relegated to a pre-computing tradition, and it refracted or channelled currents developing in fields from manufacturing to human physiology. It produced conceptions of the political world, as well as new forms of historical consciousness. It offered frameworks for structuralist thought, but also for policies regarding manufacturing and technology, international relations, and governmental decision-making. But the rising sense of the breadth, importance, and even shock of cybernetics long remained understudied, even as its intellectual assemblages continued to, well, relay. In devices and the so-called ‘digital humanities’, a refracted legacy of cybernetics is also visible. From mainframes to category-frameworks, cybernetics is everywhere in our material and intellectual worlds, even as the name and its meaning have faded. To the extent that cybernetics permeates the human sciences and our culture at large, it remains opaque – an only partially visible legacy often deemed too complex to form a simple object of historical narrative. This special issue on cybernetics in the human sciences outlines the history and stakes of cybernetics, as well as the possibilities of returning to it today.

Cyber-sensorium: An Extension of the Cyber Public Health Framework

Abstract:In response to increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks, a health-based approach is being used to define and assess their impact. Two significant cybersecurity workshops have fostered this perspective, aiming to standardize the understanding of cyber harm. Experts at these workshops agreed on a public health-like framework to analyze cyber threats focusing on the perpetrators' intent, the means available to them, and the vulnerability of targets. We contribute to this dialogue with the cyber sensorium concept, drawing parallels between the digital network and a biological nervous system essential to human welfare. Cyberattacks on this system present serious global risks, underlining the need for its protection.

Abstract:Taking on a historical lens, this paper traces the development of cybernetics and systems thinking back to the 1950s, when a group of interdisciplinary scholars converged to create a new theoretical model based on machines and systems for understanding matters of meaning, information, consciousness, and life. By presenting a genealogy of research in the landscape architecture discipline, the paper argues that landscape architects have been an important part of the development of cybernetics by materializing systems based on cybernetic principles in the environment through ecologically based landscape design. The landscape discipline has developed a design framework that provides transformative insights into understanding machine intelligence. The paper calls for a new paradigm of environmental engagement to understand matters of design and machine intelligence.

Abstract:In an ever more connected world, awareness has grown towards the hazards and vulnerabilities that the networking on sensitive digitized information pose for all parties involved. This vulnerability rests in a number of factors, both human and technical.From an ethical perspective, this means people seeking to maximise their own gain, and accomplish their goals through exploiting information existing in cyber space at the expense of other individuals and parties. One matter that is yet to be fully explored is the eventuality of not only financial information and other sensitive material being globally connected on the information highways, but also the people themselves as physical beings. Humans are natural born cyborgs who have integrated technology into their being throughout history. Issues of cyber security are extended to cybernetic security, which not only has severe ethical implications for how we, policy makers, academics, scientists, designers etc., define ethics in relation to humanity and human rights, but also the security and safety of merged organic and artificial systems and ecosystems.

Abstract:We take our world to be an objective reality, but is it? The assumption that the physical world exists in and of itself has struggled to assimilate the findings of modern physics for some time now. For example, an objective space and time would just "be", but in relativity, space contracts and time dilates. Likewise objective "things" should just inherently exist, but the entities of quantum theory are probability of existence smears, that spread, tunnel, superpose and entangle in physically impossible ways. Cosmology even tells us that our entire physical universe just "popped up", from nowhere, about 14 billion years ago. This is not how an objectively real world should behave! Yet traditional alternatives don't work much better. That the world is just an illusion of the mind doesn't explain its consistent realism and Descartes dualism, that another reality beyond the physical exists, just doubles the existential problem. It is time to consider an option we might normally dismiss out of hand. This essay explores the virtual reality conjecture, that the physical world is the digital output of non-physical quantum processing. It finds it neither illogical, nor unscientific, nor incompatible with current physics. In this model, quantum entities are programs, movement is the transfer of processing, interactions are processing overloads and the fields of physics are network properties. It has no empty space, no singularities and all the conservations of physics just conserve processing. Its prediction, that the collision of high frequency light in a vacuum can create permanent matter, will test it. If the physical world has the properties of a processing output, physics must rewrite the story behind its equations.

Abstract:The prevalence of social media and mobile computing has led to intensive user engagement in the emergent Cyber-Physical-Social-Thinking (CPST) space. However, the easy access, the lack of governance, and excessive use has generated a raft of new behaviors within CPST, which affects users' physical, social, and mental states. In this paper, we conceive the Cyber-Syndrome concept to denote the collection of cyber disorders due to excessive or problematic Cyberspace interactions based on CPST theories. Then we characterize the Cyber-Syndrome concept in terms of Maslow's theory of Needs, from which we establish an in-depth theoretical understanding of Cyber-Syndrome from its etiology, formation, symptoms, and manifestations. Finally, we propose an entropy-based Cyber-Syndrome control mechanism for its computation and management. The goal of this study is to give new insights into this rising phenomenon and offer guidance for further research and development.

Abstract:The ubiquitous nature of modern Information Retrieval and Virtual World give rise to new realities. To what extent are these "realities" real? Which "physics" should be applied to quantitatively describe them? In this essay I dwell on few examples. The first is Adaptive neural networks, which are not networks and not neural, but still provide service similar to classical ANNs in extended fashion. The second is the emergence of objects looking like Einsteinian spacetime, which describe the behavior of an Internet surfer like geodesic motion. The third is the demonstration of nonclassical and even stronger-than-quantum probabilities in Information Retrieval, their use. Immense operable datasets provide new operationalistic environments, which become to greater and greater extent "realities". In this essay, I consider the overall Information Retrieval process as an objective physical process, representing it according to Melucci metaphor in terms of physical-like experiments. Various semantic environments are treated as analogs of various realities. The readers' attention is drawn to topos approach to physical theories, which provides a natural conceptual and technical framework to cope with the new emerging realities.
