Abstract:Computational image aesthetic evaluation is a computable human aesthetic perception and judgment realized by machines, which has a significant impact on a variety of applications such as image advanced search and promotional exhibition of painting arts. Various approaches have been proposed in copious literature trying to solve this challenging problem. However, there have been few attempts in reviewing works from different types of visual arts, due to their significant differences in visual features and aesthetic principles. In this survey, we present a comprehensive listing of the reviewed works on aesthetic assessment of photographs and paintings, mainly highlighting the contributions and innovations of the existing approaches. We firstly introduce aesthetic assessment benchmark datasets in different categories. Then, conventional aesthetic evaluation approaches based on handcrafted features are reviewed. Besides, we systematically evaluate recent deep learning techniques that are useful for developing robust models for aesthetic prediction tasks in scoring, distribution, attribute, and description. Moreover, the possibility of aesthetic-aware color enhancement, recomposition of photo images, and automatic generation of aesthetic-guided art paintings through computational approaches are summarized. Finally, challenges and potential future directions for this field are discussed. We hope that our survey could serve as a comprehensive reference source for future research on computational aesthetics in visual media.

Abstract:We describe work in progress to conduct a systematic review of research on effects of arts-based programs for mental health in young people. We are at the stage of searching for relevant studies through major databases and screening extant systematic reviews for additional research which meet our inclusion criteria. At this stage, however, concerns have arisen regarding both the quality of existing primary studies and of recently published systematic reviews in this area of arts and health. As a case in point, in this paper we focus on one research report on art therapy with adolescent girls and its inclusion in three systematic reviews. We demonstrate that the reviews fail to undertake a robust critique of the Bazargan and Pakdaman paper and that the paper and reviews are flawed. Drawing on recent criticisms of systematic reviewing, we consider the value of proceeding with our systematic review as initially planned.

It evaluates its current applications, identifies its limits and epistemological ruptures in the field of information and communication sciences, and proposes a reevaluation of its concepts in the light of recent developments in reception studies.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence is one of the current generation’s inventions that has been widely used. It has helped make lives easier, especially regarding appliances and business, and it has also altered various industries, including the arts. However, this development has sparked different perspectives among artists and non-artists. This study aims to evaluate how students, both artists, and non-artists, perceive the differences between real art and artificial intelligence-generated art. For this study, a total of fifty (50) students will be gathered, consisting of twenty-five (25) non-artist students from different courses and twenty-five (25) artist students from the IARFA Institute of Far Eastern University. The participants will receive the questionnaire via Messenger. The results of this study showed that the participants could differentiate actual art from AI-generated art based on their knowledge when evaluating artworks. Additionally, it demonstrates that artist students showed more confidence in determining actual artworks from AI-generated artworks due to their knowledge. While non-artists remain skeptical in determining artworks as they base their perception on how they see art.

Abstract:Audience Response Systems (ARS) can be used to increase students’ commitment and engagement. ARS are becoming popular at lectures, complementing traditional masterclasses and shedding light to a more profitability of the time. Several researchers studied the impact of ARS in the classroom. However, there is a lack of information about the current research landscape to identify paths towards the development of scientific research and projects in ARS field. This bibliometric study discusses a collection of bibliometric parameters on ARS literature that were calculated from data downloaded in Scopus database. A total of 2,015 publications were considered from Scopus database. Results showed that the number of publications is stable since 2010 with a noticeable decrease in 2019. The United States and the United Kingdom are the most productive countries with a total of 898 papers in the US and 179 in the UK. The most prolific author was Daniel Zingaro from the University of Toronto with a total of 10 manuscripts published. This study provides researchers who are interested in conducting research on ARS with insights on potential venues for publications and collaboration with research institutions and researchers that are more prolific in the field.

Abstract:This study intends to explore the potential of integrating of two major theories that stemmed from two entirely different disciplines, namely the human-computer interaction and the arts. Indeed, there are vast gaps when two different theories, such as technology and art, are to be unified to develop a new element that complements to both disciplines. Empirically, virtual reality as immersive technological innovations are progressively developed and evaluated among various disciplines. Virtual reality technically is customarily to immersive experience as a measurement tool while virtual three-dimensional animated environment in virtual reality is an aesthetic object that requires an aesthetic-friendly method as its measurement tool. The proposition of evaluation is to measure the user immersive experience and aesthetic experience when dealing with an art object that imbues with digital technology. Therefore, an integrative multidimensional evaluation is required to evaluate virtual reality environment. This study uses scientific literature survey which research papers are retrieved from Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Scopus. Thus, this paper reports on the potentials of integrating the immersive experience and aesthetic experience theories to evaluate a virtual reality historical event. It explains the concept of immersive experience and aesthetic experience in immersive virtual reality applications in general and museum digital preservation practices in particular. Then focuses on the concept idea of how to integrate immersive experience and aesthetic experience in virtual reality historical event application by discovering the construct and element from both theories. Thus, the finding unveils the possibilities of integration immersive experience and aesthetic experience in terms of integrating the construct and elements, contributing to contemplate new possibilities and discoveries in both fields and become catalysts for future research. This initial concept idea could become fundamental conceptual design reference of developing virtual reality system in museum context used by designers, developers and museum professionals. In the conclusion, this study concluded that there is a significant and lucrative potential to integrate both theory in developing immersive virtual reality systems. Hence recommend to a new integrative framework development that is applicable to immersive product development.
A systematic review of the arts and humanities in psychiatry education

Abstract:This systematic review characterizes the published literature on arts and humanities curricula for psychiatry learners that include any form of program evaluation. Authors searched three databases (Medline ALL, Embase.com, and PsycINFO) to identify articles on arts and humanities in psychiatry education. Criteria for the review included articles reporting outcome measures for arts and humanities learning activities in psychiatry learners. For those articles meeting inclusion criteria, a descriptive analysis was performed as well as an assessment of the level of program evaluation using the Kirkpatrick framework. Of 1,287 articles identified, 35 met inclusion criteria. About half of the programs included medical students (n = 17, 49%). Film and television was the most frequent arts and humanities subject (n = 16, 46%). Most studies incorporated a non-randomized, non-controlled design (n = 30, 86%). Twenty-two (63%) achieved a Kirkpatrick Level 1 designation, 12 achieved Level 2 (34%), and one study achieved Level 3 (3%). Arts and humanities programs have a promising role in psychiatry education. At present, significant heterogeneity in the extant literature makes it difficult to draw general conclusions that could guide future program development. This review underscores the need for rigorous evaluative methods of arts and humanities programs for psychiatry learners.

The findings from this research are that there are positive and negative impacts from the use of artificial intelligence, from the process to the product of the artwork. While criticism centers on the limited imagination and creativity of artists when using artificial intelligence as a medium for creating works of art.

Abstract:The sensory modality, which plays a dominant role in spatial perception in humans, is essential for recognizing the geometric structure of the surrounding environment. The interaction between the body, imagination, and environment in the interior experience contributes to the formation of memories from visited places. This paper is conducted to explore the impact of human senses on spatial perception and the psychological effects of different environments and experiences on visitors. Focusing on the interior environment of Bali's airport and incorporating elements of Balinese culture, this study examines how sensory experiences can significantly influence the psychology of tourists. Through comprehensive literature reviews, the research aims to provide insights into the integration of multisensory elements and cultural aspects in airport design to enhance the overall experience and emotional well-being of travellers.

Abstract:This study presents a comprehensive literature review on the convergence of affective computing, interactive installation art, multi-dimensional sensory stimulation, and artificial intelligence (AI) in measuring emotional responses, demonstrating the potential of artificial intelligence in emotion recognition as a tool for sustainable development. It addresses the problem of understanding emotional response and measurement in the context of interactive installation art under artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing sustainability as a key factor. The study aims to fill the existing research gaps by examining three key aspects: sensory stimulation, multi-dimensional interactions, and engagement, which have been identified as significant contributors to profound emotional responses in interactive installation art. The proposed approach involves conducting a process analysis of emotional responses to interactive installation art, aiming to develop a conceptual framework that explores the variables influencing emotional responses. This study formulates hypotheses that make specific predictions about the relationships between sensory stimulation, multi-dimensional interactions, engagement, and emotional responses. By employing the ASSURE model combined with experimental design, the research methodology ensures a systematic and comprehensive study implementation. The implications of this project lie in advancing the understanding of emotional experiences in interactive installation art under AI, providing insights into the underlying mechanisms that drive these experiences, and their influence on individual well-being from a sustainable perspective. The contributions of this research include bridging the identified research gaps, refining theoretical frameworks, and guiding the design of more impactful and emotionally resonant interactive artworks with sustainability in mind. This research seeks not only to fill the existing gaps in understanding emotional experiences in interactive installation art, but also to guide the development of immersive and emotionally engaging installations, ultimately advancing the broader field of human–computer interaction, promoting individual well-being, and contribute to sustainable development.

In addition to presenting insights from empirical works, the review identifies areas of scholarly engagement to make visioning an effective planning technique.

Abstract:This study focuses on examining the aesthetic preferences of students from different academic backgrounds in residential environments. The purpose of the study was to identify liked and disliked aesthetic characteristics among student groups with different academic backgrounds. The research involved students from various academic backgrounds, including the Departments of Architectural, Civil, Electrical Engineering, and the Department of Arabic Language. The study employed an appropriate factor analysis method to accurately assess the aesthetic quality. The study found that students’ academic backgrounds significantly affect their aesthetic sense. Architecture students have a strong ability to evaluate works of art and engineering projects effectively. Some aesthetic characteristics, such as movement, harmony, and simplicity, are preferred across all student groups, while others, such as excessive complexity and rigidity, are disliked. The research also suggests that designers should consider the preferences of different resident groups when creating environments. Furthermore, the study found that most student groups, except for architecture students, exhibit great admiration for Western architectural styles with contemporary, non-traditional characteristics. Overall, the study provides new insights into the aesthetic preferences of students in residential environments and identifies visually desirable and undesirable attributes that most students agree upon.
A review of qualitative methodologies used to explore patient perceptions of arts and healthcare

Abstract:Although the importance of the arts in healthcare is increasingly recognised, further research is needed to investigate the mechanisms by which arts and health programmes achieve their impact. An overview of the qualitative methods used to explore patients' perceptions of these interventions is lacking. We reviewed the literature to gain insights into the qualitative methods used to explore patients' perceptions of the role of arts in healthcare with a view to identifying the most common methodologies used and to guide researchers embarking on research regarding patients' perceptions of arts in healthcare. Our results indicate a paucity of qualitative studies, a variety of methods used and variability of methodological rigour. Grounded theory and phenomenology were the most common approaches adopted, mixed methods approaches were relatively frequent, and versions of 'thematic' or 'content' analysis were commonly cited. Semi-structured interviews were the most popular data collection method. The emphasis of all of the studies was on active or participative arts engagement, with no focus on receptive engagement with the arts and aesthetics. It was concluded that careful consideration of appropriate methodology is important when researching such an exploratory and sensitive area. Individual interviews were most popular and might be appropriate when exploring personal, sensitive experiences. Mixed method studies possibly provide a comprehensive approach which might satisfy both the arts and healthcare settings need for evidence. It seems important to pay attention to rigour in any methodology chosen and a greater focus on receptive engagement with the arts might be encouraged in future research.

Abstract:Since the 1960s, the rapid development of science and technology has gradually reduced the power distance between people. Individual visitor has also transformed from passive appreciation to active acceptance. The theory represented by receptive aesthetics also provides theoretical support for the development of modern art. At the same time, interactive art characterized by "interactivity", "mixed senses" and "cross-media" came into being. In the era when the individual is activated, the creator adopts the "people-oriented" creative concept, uses scientific and technological methods to create a multidimensional space art which contains both virtual world and reality, and establishes an artistic expression of equal dialogue between creators, works and audiences from the perspective of reception aesthetics. With the upgrading of the consumer era, the iterative development of the audience's aesthetic level and emotional experience research has undoubtedly become the core content of contemporary art development and exploration.

Abstract:Arts-based research (ABR) makes many promises, including the opportunity to engage with embodied ways of being and knowing, raise social and political concerns, as well as to address novel, participant-led inquiries. In this critical narrative review of the literature, we examine how disabled children and youth employ ABR methods in research contexts by carefully examining studies that use visual ABR. A secondary aim is to glean methodological insights from the application of ABR to the lives of disabled children and youth to help foster this critical dialogue. We decided to undertake this narrative review of the literature to better understand how ABR is used in pediatric disability contexts.

Abstract:This article contributes to the discussion on the need to adopt an interdisciplinary approach in the visual art syllabus, specifically in higher education in Malaysia. Over the last two decades, the academic world has faced rapidly advancing technology and the rise of Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0). Because of the increased level of high-tech software and hardware competency among students, universities are in dire need to improve and innovate their current syllabi. Hence, this study was carried out to discuss the need to adopt an interdisciplinary approach to improve current visual art syllabi in Malaysia. The topics that are explored in this paper include the definition of an interdisciplinary approach in visual art syllabi, the current status of visual art syllabi in Malaysia, factors that are important for the integration of art with other fields, and how an interdisciplinary approach can be implemented. The data used in this research were obtained from a seminar, in-depth interviews, and a literature review, and were analyzed using a qualitative method. The findings indicate that visual art education duly needs a new program or needs to be revamped into a future-ready curriculum. Therefore, an interdisciplinary approach, or the integration of two bodies of knowledge in one program, could be one of the solutions to this issue.

Abstract:This research examines the integration of animation and Spatial Augmented Reality (SAR) to create immersive artworks in gallery environments. As part of exploring the unexplored domain of SAR-animation convergence, the study looks at the spectators' responses towards this innovative approach in the limited gallery spaces, focusing on viewers' engagement and acceptance. By utilising a combination of research approaches—including audience surveys and creative experiments—the study uncovers the potentials of animation-SAR-based immersive experiences. The results highlight the potential of this growing area, notwithstanding obstacles such as high costs and implementation complexity. The research indicates that immersive art engages viewers to a deeper level and can have an emotional impact; it enriches the viewers' experiences and may contribute as a tool to other significant disciplines, such as art therapy.

Abstract:Audio Augmented Reality (AAR) applications are gaining traction, especially for entertainment purposes. To that extent, the current study explored its use and effectiveness in enhancing art gallery visitors’ experiences. Four paintings were selected and sonified using the Jython algorithm to produce computer generated music (Basic AAR); the audio was then further enhanced with traditional music by a musician (Enhanced AAR). Twenty-six participants experienced each painting in Basic, Enhanced, and No AAR condition. Results show that AAR cues had a significant effect on participants’ subjective feedback towards the paintings. Sentiment Analysis shows that participants mentioned significantly more positive words from Enhanced AAR than the others. Enhanced AAR also made participants express a sense of immersion, whereas Basic AAR made them concentrate more on forlorn aspects of the paintings. Findings from this study suggest ways to improve and customize AAR cues for different painting styles, and indicate the need for multi-modal augmentations.

Abstract:We report on the state-of-the-art of software visualization. To ensure reproducibility, we adopted the Systematic Literature Review methodology. That is, we analyzed 1440 entries from IEEE Xplore and ACM Digital Library databases. We selected 105 relevant full papers published in 2013-2019, which we classified based on the aspect of the software system that is supported (i.e., structure, behavior, and evolution). For each paper, we extracted main dimensions that characterize software visualizations, such as software engineering tasks, roles of users, information visualization techniques, and media used to display visualizations. We provide researchers in the field an overview of the state-of-the-art in software visualization and highlight research opportunities. We also help developers to identify suitable visualizations for their particular context by matching software visualizations to development concerns and concrete details to obtain available visualization tools.

Abstract:The climate change crisis is negatively impacting the mental health of people worldwide. Attention is a pivotal pathway to healing ourselves and the world, as it is a sensory process that enhances mental health and promotes sustainable behavior. Despite architecture's potential to captivate all six human senses immediately, there is still a significant gap in research. Thus, this study aimed to identify architectural features that stimulate attention through the six human senses: visual, touch, auditory, olfaction, taste, and emotion. This review article was conducted by searching data from Scopus in February 2024, identifying 4844 related publications. After data screening following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, 32 relevant and accessible research works were identified. Finally, data were extracted from the selected articles and analyzed using thematic analysis to explore their relevance to all six senses. The results reveal that the architectural features predominantly eliciting attention are mainly related to visual sensory stimuli. Closely following are the architectural features perceived through the emotional sense. The architecture that promotes attention is minimally associated with touch, auditory, and olfaction senses. Lastly, no architectural features were found to influence attention perceived through the sense of taste. Nevertheless, this study merely synthesizes data from previous research studies. Future research endeavors should validate this study's findings for broader implications empirically.
