Abstract:SiO2 nanoparticles can be used as drug carriers in drug delivery systems, wherein the size of the nanoparticles plays a vital role in their distribution in vivo. SiO2 nanoparticles were synthesised using the Stober method and characterised by dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy. The effects of the ammonia concentration, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) concentration, water loading and alcohol type on the size and dispersion of the SiO2 nanoparticles were investigated. The results showed that the concentration of ammonia was the most important factor in dictating the size of the SiO2 nanoparticles. The size of the particles increased with increasing ammonia and TEOS concentrations. Increasing the water loading caused a reduction in the particle size but an increase in the dispersion. Both the particle size and dispersion increased with increasing alcohol carbon number. Linear relationships were observed between the SiO2 particle size and the concentrations of ammonia and TEOS, which could be used to control the size of SiO2 nanoparticles during synthesis.

Abstract:The effects of dilution of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) with ethanol on the shape and monodispersity of silica particles were investigated. The results indicated that the dilution of TEOS with ethanol can depress the formation of new nuclei and the aggregation or adhesion of particles and make the distillation of TEOS unnecessary to achieve monodispersed silica spheres. A seeded growth technique using continuous drop addition of TEOS diluted with 4× volume of ethanol was developed to improve monodispersity and spheric shape and increase the size of silica particles. The monodisperse silica particles (150 nm ± 5%−1.2 μm ± 1%) with fine spheric shape were successfully synthesized by the seeded growth technique. Using the homemade 280 nm ± 2.8% silica spheres, we prepared opals of high quality which showed periodically ordered packing and a photonic band-gap effect.

Abstract:Mercapto-silica spheres with controllable size from ∼150 nm to ∼3.5 μm and narrow size distribution have been prepared in water using a one-pot synthesis, in which 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) was used as the sole silica source and ammonia as the base catalyst. The hydrolysis of MPS at the early stage of the reaction produces amphiphilic silicate species which initiate the self-emulsification of the system and lead to the formation of oil-in-water emulsion droplets. Further hydrolysis and condensation promote the nucleation and growth of the mercapto-silica spheres inside the emulsion droplets. These mercapto-silica spheres are both structurally and functionally different from typical silica particles prepared from silicon alkoxides. Understanding the formation mechanism allows systematic tuning of the size of mercapto-silica spheres in a wide range by changing the amount of precursor, the concentration of ammonia, the amount of additional surfactants, and the reaction time. We find that Ostwald ripening may occur quickly if the spheres are kept in the reaction solution, resulting in significant broadening of the particle size distribution. In order to obtain uniform and stable samples, it is important to quench the growth of the mercapto-silica spheres by separating them from the original reaction mixture and then storing them in solvents that can prevent further ripening.

Abstract:Spherical silica particles with uniform size (90–520 nm) were successfully fabricated using Stöber method. The size of silica particle (fabricated from ethanol, water, ammonia and tetraethyl orthosilicate) was examined by field‐emission scanning electron microscopy. The effect of stirring rates (0–1200 rpm), reaction temperatures (12–75°C) and total volumes (80–400 0ml) on silica particle size was studied in detail. The experiment results indicate that stirring rates has no significant impact on the average size of silica particles, while higher temperature and larger total volume of reactant both result in smaller silica particles.

Abstract:Size-controllable synthesis of worm-like microporous monodispersed SiO2microspheres using dodecylamine (DDA) as direct agent in ethanol-water solvent system was firstly developed by varying the proportion of reactants. The products were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXRD) and nitrogen adsorption. The results showed that the SiO2microspheres with size of 50nm~1um could be prepared by varying the molar ratio of water/ethanol when the molar ratio of (DDA)/tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) is 0.4 and the concentration of TEOS varied from 0.138 to 0.248mol/L. This method is simple and convenient, the prepared SiO2microspheres are monodispersed and uniform, the worm-like pore size is about 1.4nm. The size controllable silica microspheres could be used as an excellent additional medium to alter rheological behavior of fluid after surface modification..

Abstract:An effective and reproducible method of preparing highly monodisperse organic-inorganic hybrid silica spheres was studied. One process, one precursor (organosilane) and one solvent (water) were used in our experiments. The size of hybrid silica spheres could be adjusted from 360 to 770 nm with relative standard deviation below 2% by controlling the concentration of the organosilane precursor and the ammonia catalyst. The increasing of the precursor concentration increases the particle size while the catalyst concentration has a reverse effect on the particle size. The concept of homogeneous nucleation and growth processes are introduced to explain the formation mechanism and the effect of reaction conditions. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images illustrate the copiousness in quantity and the uniformity in size/shape of the particles that could be routinely accomplished in this synthesis. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and (29)Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra confirm the structure of vinyl hybrid silica spheres, where the vinyl group (-CH=CH(2)) exists and connects to the silicon atom. This method has also been extended to design and prepare other organic-inorganic hybrid materials especially in monodisperse surface-modified silica spheres.

Abstract:Silica micro spheres could be obtained through a semibatch sol–gel process, which was carried out by adding a solution of tetraethyl orthosilicate in ethanol into a mixture batch of KCl, ethanol, NH3•H2O, and water. Compared with other methods the semibatch sol–gel method could produce micro size silica spheres with narrow size distribution. The influence of reaction factors to the size and size distribution of silica spheres were studied. K+ could help obtaining large size silica but also could reduce the charge shielding effect, which caused the collision of silica spheres. Water and NH3•H2O were necessary for the hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate. However, too much water could form thicker hydration shell around K+, and more NH3•H2O in mixture batch would increase number of the nuclei of the solution. When the consumption rate of active silanol for the growing of silica could not offset its formation rate, a small silica size, and broad size distribution would occour. Therefore, the amount of tetraethyl orthosilicate in the reaction and its adding rate should be careful controlled. It was also found that the reaction temperature and holding time, which is the time for stirring of solution after tetraethyl orthosilicate injection, had no significant influence on the particle size.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:We present a general, convenient, and efficient synthetic concept for the coating of colloidal particles with a silica (SiO2) shell of well-defined and precisely controlled morphology and porosity. Monodisperse submicroscopic polystyrene (PS) particles were synthesized via two-stage emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization and subsequent swelling polymerization, enabling selective particle surface modification by the incorporation of ionic (methacrylic acid, MAA) or nonionic (hydroxyethyl methacrylate, HEMA or methacrylamide, MAAm) comonomers, which could be proven by zeta potential measurements as well as by determining the three-phase contact angle of the colloidal particles adsorbed at the air-water and n-decane-water interface. The functionalized particles could be directly coated with silica shells of variable thickness, porosity, and controlled surface roughness in a seeded sol gel process from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), leading to hybrid PS@silica particles with morphologies ranging from core-shell (CS) to raspberry-type architectures. The experimental results demonstrated that the silica coating could be precisely tailored by the type of surface functionalization, which strongly influences the surface properties of the colloidal particles and thus the morphology of the final silica shell. Furthermore, the PS cores could be easily removed by thermal treatment, yielding extremely uniform hollow silica particles, while maintaining their initial shell architecture. These particles are highly stable against irreversible aggregation and could be readily dried, purified, and redispersed in various solvents. Herein we show a first example of coating semiconducting CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals with smooth and spherical silica shells by applying the presented method that are expected to be suitable systems for applications as markers in biology and life science by using fluorescence microscopy methods, which are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica materials with a variety of morphologies, such as monodisperse microspheres, gigantic hollow structures comprising a thin shell with a hole, and gigantic hollow structures consisting of an outer thin shell and an inner layer composed of many small spheres, have been readily synthesized in mixed water-ethanol solvents at room temperature using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the template. The obtained mesoporous silica generally shows a disordered mesostructure with typical average pore sizes ranging from 3.1 to 3.8 nm. The effects of the water-to-ethanol volume ratio (r), the volume content of tetraethyl orthosilicate TEOS (x), and the CTAB concentration in the solution on the final morphology of the mesoporous silica products have been investigated. The growth process of gigantic hollow shells of mesoporous silica through templating emulsion droplets of TEOS in mixed water-ethanol solution has been monitored directly with optical microscopy. Generally, the morphology of mesoporous silica can be regulated from microspheres through gigantic hollow structures composed of small spheres to gigantic hollow structures with a thin shell by increasing the water-to-ethanol volume ratio, increasing the TEOS volume content, or decreasing the CTAB concentration. A plausible mechanism for the morphological regulation of mesoporous silica by adjusting various experimental parameters has been put forward by considering the existing state of the unhydrolyzed and partially hydrolyzed TEOS in the synthesis system.

Abstract:10-60 nm-sized mesoporous silica particles with ordered or worm-like pore structures were controllably synthesized in extremely dilute surfactant solution, and the lowest concentrations of TEOS and CTAB were 12.45 mK 1.52 mM, respectively. The synthesis of nanometer-sized Al-incorporated mesoporous silica particles (Al-MS) was also performed under the similar conditions. Compared to the mesoporous silica without doping of aluminum, those Al-incorporated silica particles have a certain textural mesoporosity. The results indicate that the size and pore structure of mesoporous silica can be adjusted by changing the concentration of reactants. The mesoporous silica nanoparticles, including AI-MS, were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXRD), as well as nitrogen adsorption/desorption techniques. Abstract:Highly monodisperse hybrid spherical silica nanoparticles with diameters ranging from 30 to 200 nm were prepared by a one-step emulsion polymerization in aqueous solution. In contrast with the former method for preparing the hybrid silica materials, our method has three advantages. (1) Through this one-pot route, hybrid silica particles with organic functional groups on the surface are prepared in aqueous solution. (2) The particles are created in a size range of 30-200 nm and highly monodisperse. (3) The size of the particles can be effectively well-defined and precisely controlled depending upon the synthesis conditions such as the concentration of surfactant. Other kinds of organosilane monomers have also been tried in the same way. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were performed to elucidate the morphologies of the hybrid silica particles. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), (29)Si NMR, and (13)C NMR were used to gain information about thermal properties and detail structure. This approach may open a new broad avenue for the hybrid material in the field of photocrystal, electronic enveloping.

Abstract:In the stöber synthesis of spherical silica, the alcohol/water ratio is normally regarded as the major factor that determines the final particle size of the products, but a solid relationship between the alcohol/water ratio and the particle size is hard to be deduced, and the thermodynamic mechanism behind this phenomenon has not been fully discussed yet. In this paper, the methanol/ethanol/isopropanol-H 2 O solvents with different alcohol/water ratio are used to prepare spherical silica particles via a classic stöber synthesis. It is found that not only the surface tension of the reaction system, but also the interface contact angle can effectively influence the final particle size of the silica products, and an interfacial wetting effect could be deduced for the thermodynamic analysis of this phenomenon. In this interfacial wetting mode for the particle size manipulation, the particle size is proportional to the surface tension of the reaction system when the interface contact angle is below 900, but an inverse proportional relationship will be applicable when the interface contact angle is above 900. Assisted with this new mechanism, the iso-particle size contour curves based on pairs of surface tension and the interface contact angle could be deduced, and the controllable stöber synthesis of spherical silica particles could be reached in a more facile and accurate way.

Abstract:Monodisperse SiO2 microspheres have found applications in catalysis, drug delivery, coatings, cosmetics, optical sensing and plastics. The particle size of monodisperse SiO2 microspheres is closely related to its application. In this paper, monodisperse SiO2 microspheres with tunable diameter were successfully synthesized using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as template. The monodisperse SiO2 microspheres with diameters ranging from 200 nm to 3 μm were obtained by controlling the concentration of CTAB, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), diethanolamine (DEA) and reaction temperature. The BET surface area could reach 835 m2•g-1 and mean pore diameter was 2.3 nm. The formation mechanism of monodisperse SiO2 microspheres was investigated.

Abstract:Novel and uniform mesoporous silica particles with controllable cavities in their surface have been fabricated using PAA and CTAB as dual templates in a mild reaction system. Herein, a series of hierarchically distinct silica particles can be obtained by simply adjusting the mass ratios (R) of PAA to CTAB. When the R value continues to decrease, the corresponding number and opening size of these cavities are also increased. However, if no PAA added, only unique monodisperse mesoporous silica spheres with uniform size of approximately 400 nm can be obtained. These specific silica particles were characterized by means of small-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. Results show that these unique mesoporous silica particles totally behave as an hexagonally ordered mesophase. The maximum BET surface area can be as high as 891 m(2)/g, and the maximum pore volumes can be as large as 0.27 cm(3)/g. Notably, the specific cavity features including opening size and cavity number almost do not change after calcination treatment. Moreover, a possible formation mechanism of the hierarchically distinct silica particles has been put forward, considering that the specific interface instability effect, the reduction in the surface free energy, and the synergic self-assembly of PAA and CTAB in solution can play a key role in mediating the formation of the hierarchical silica nanostructures. In general, the synthesis route is simple and straightforward for the preparation of the other biomineral nanostructures and may play an important role in microencapsulation.
Controlled Formation of Silica Particles from Tetraethyl Orthosilicate in Nonionic Water-in-Oil Microemulsions

Abstract:The formation of silica particles by the ammonia-catalyzed hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in nonionic water-in-oil microemulsions was investigated as a function of the molecular structure of the surfactant, the type of oil, and the concentrations of surfactant and water. Three types of nonionic surfactants and two oils, heptane and cyclohexane, were used. Microemulsion solutions were characterized using photon correlation spectroscopy, electrical conductivity measurement, and titration of phase separation points. The hydrolysis of TEOS and the size of synthesized silica particles were measured by FTIR spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy measurements, respectively. It was found that the size distribution of silica particles correlates well with the size, connectivity, and stability of microemulsion droplets. This correlation indicates that the final size distribution of silica particles is predetermined in the silica particle's nucleation stage. In this stage, hydrolyzed (monomeric and polymeric) silica reacting species undergo interdroplet dynamic exchanges to contact one another and grow into nuclei. The results of this study showed that the nucleation of silica particles is enhanced (as to result in smaller final particles) by increasing the number of microemulsion droplets that compartmentalize reacting species in solutions or by increasing the strength of surfactant films in sterically hindering the dynamic exchange of reacting species between droplets. The effect of each variable described above on the formation of silica particles in microemulsions is detailed in the paper.

A facile and environmentally friendly method for the synthesis of hollow silica particles in a self-stable dispersion

Abstract:The fabrication of hollow silica particles is of interest from both academic and application viewpoints. In this paper, we propose a distinctly novel method by which hollow silica particles are successfully fabricated in a self-stable system without any surfactants during a self-consumptive templated process. In detail, it was carried out by adopting a two-step feeding of tetraethoxysilane including initial dropping and subsequent addition of residual TEOS in one batch. The synthesized hollow particles have been extensively characterized using a scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and N(2) sorption analysis. The results indicated that the morphology of the resultant hollow silica particles was governed by simply changing the volume ratio of the precursor added in two steps, the reaction temperature and the concentration of ammonia. Additionally, the mechanism governing the formation of the hollow silica particles is discussed.
Monodispersed, Micron-Sized Supermicroporous Silica Particles by Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide-Mediated Preparation

Abstract:In this study, we present a novel modified Stöber method utilizing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a mediator for the preparation of monodispersed, micron-sized supermicroporous silica particles. Observed results show prepared silica particles ranging in size from 0.64 to 1.36 μm with an increase in CTAB concentration from 1.0 to 5.0 mM. The particles exhibited low polydispersity (<5%), a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area (570 to 1064 m2/g), and pore volumes ranging from 0.22 to 0.39 cm3/g. The pore size, determined using the Barrett-Joyner-Halenda method from the adsorption branches of the isotherms, was approximately 1.9 nm, specifically 1.83, 1.85, and 1.90 nm, as the CTAB concentration increased from 1.0 to 2.5 and 5.0 mM, respectively. The resulting particles displayed a narrow distribution of pore diameters. In addition, to obtain an in-depth understanding of the role of CTAB on the preparation of silica particles, a possible mechanism is also investigated using conductivity, dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, FT-IR spectra, and transmission electron microscopy. Our findings demonstrate that CTAB plays multiple roles in the hydrolysis/condensation of TEOS (tetraethyl orthosilicate) and subsequent nucleation and growth of silica particles. CTAB acts as a template for superporosity, a stabilizer for colloids, and an accelerator for nucleation and growth, leading to formation of monodispersed micrometer silica particles. Further characterization through FT-IR and 29Si solid NMR spectra revealed that the micron silica particles were obtained with inhomogeneity in the condensation degree, allowing for selective etching through hot incubation to form micron-sized hollow silica spheres.

Preparation Of Monodispersed Silica Colloids Using Sol-Gel Method: Cosolvent Effect

Abstract:The diameter of monodispersed silica colloids is mainly affected by the relative contribution from nucleation and growth. Once the total number of nuclei is fixed, the resultant particle size is then determined via the growth process by the total quantity of TEOS. In this work, we will demonstrate the effect of cosolvent on particle size of silica colloids, in addition to the common parameters such as NH3 and water concentrations. Experimental results indicate that the size of silica colloids decreases with increasing polarity index of the solvents. (The definition of polarity index of cosolevent: P-AB = phi(A)P(A) + phi(B)P(B)). Since the cosolvent is not directly involved in the preceding reactions of hydrolysis and condensation, we therefore suspect that the polarity of cosolvent would influence the solubility of intermediate [Si(OC2H5)(4-x)(OH)x] and hence the supersaturation (C-max(*)) for the nucleation process. With higher polarity of cosolvent, the number of nuclei is increased and therefore smaller silica colloids are obtained. Furthermore, the effects of ammonia and water will also be discussed by similar arguments based on relative contribution from nucleation and growth processes.

Abstract:A new approach focusing on the reactivity of a silica source was developed for the particle size control of monodispersed mesoporous silica spheres (MMSSs). A glycol-modified silanes, tetrakis(2-hydroxyethyl) orthosilicate was chosen as the silica source and successfully applied in the surfactant-templated synthesis of MMSSs in a very dilute alkaline alcohol-water mixture. Due to its higher hydrolysis rate compared with tetraalkyl orthosilicates, it took less time for the primary particles to come out, resulting in the formation of small particles with diameters falling in the low submicrometer range. The resultant spheres possessed a well-ordered mesoporous structure, which was typically MCM-41-type hexagonal. The MCM-48-type cubic spheres could also be obtained by changing the reaction condition. The monodispersity and particle size of the spheres were precisely controlled by the adjustment of the solvent composition in the methanol-ethanol-water system. Furthermore, ionic colloidal crystals exhibiting a well-defined stop band in the visible light region could be fabricated from the resultant MMSSs for the first time. This work encourages the further utilization of MMSSs in photonics as well as in catalysis or biochemistry.
