Abstract:Abstract: This article reads Louisa May Alcott's Little Women (1868) against nineteenth-century mothering manuals and the psychoanalytic object-relations theory to argue that the novel links maternal rage with infanticide. Feminist scholars have noted how Little Women , though ostensibly a story of family harmony, conceals a deep vein of anger. Jo March's trajectory, like that of other nineteenth-century sentimental heroines, stages a transformation from rebellious tomboy to self-controlled angel-in-the-house. Attending to the ways in which the text persistently links anger to infanticide, this article shows how the idealized angel-in-the-house functioned as an idealized solution to guard against the imagined dangers of female rage. Moreover, the binary between angel mothers and infanticidal ones was inflected with racial meaning that served to distinguish who was and wasn't included under the umbrella of national belonging. In recovering the spectre of infanticide subtending Little Women , this article asks us to re-evaluate the ways that cultural texts transmitted messages about love and rage and the political implications of how such relationships to affect determined the lives and developmental trajectories of children.

Abstract:This paper describes a probabilistic syntactic approach to the detection and recognition of temporally extended activities and interactions between multiple agents. A complete system consisting of an adaptive tracker, an event generator and the parser performs segmentation and labelling of a surveillance video of a parking lot; the system correctly identifies activities such as pick-up and drop-off, which involve person-vehicle interactions. The main contributions of this paper are extending the parsing algorithm to handle multi-agent interactions within a single parser, providing a general mechanism for consistency-based pruning, and developing an efficient incremental parsing algorithm.

Abstract:Th e purpose of the article is an attempt to investigate the regulation of infanticide according to the monuments of church and secular law in Ukraine of the 14th–18th centuries; track diff erences in the punishment of criminals; determine methods of killing and hiding traces. The research methodology is based on the principles of scientifi city, historicism and objectiv- ity. Th e main method is historical anthropology, the methods of analysis, synthesis, historical- comparative are also involved. Th e scientifi c novelty consists in highlighting the problematic issue of the history of childhood (infanticide), which for this period remains poorly researched, as well as in the use of sources that were also not involved by domestic historians in the study of this problem. Conclusions. Princely statutes recognize the killing of an infant as a crime, instead omitting references to women’s eff orts to get rid of the fetus while still in the womb. More infor- mation about the crime of infanticide is provided by the Lithuanian statutes, “Laws by which the Little Russian people are judged”, helm books and confessional questionnaires. It was possible to single out several ways of committing this crime, which are divided into those committed during pregnancy and aft er childbirth (regarding the fetus in the mother’s womb and regarding the new- born child, respectively). It was established that killing the fetus and causing a miscarriage was possible in several ways: using special “potions” (in our opinion, the most widespread), which could have a harmful eff ect on the female body, as well as resorting to excessive physical exer- tion. Women could also go the other way: mask visible signs of pregnancy, wait for childbirth, which was impossible to predict, and therefore had to act depending on the circumstances, and lose the life of the newborn. Th is could be done in the following ways: drowned (thrown into a pond or well), buried in the ground, burned, given to domestic or wild animals, suff ocated in sleep in the parent’s bed, etc. Norms of ecclesiastical and secular law have a negative attitude towards such crimes, for which fairly severe punishments are provided. Although it was diffi cult to prove a woman guilty of infanticide in court (the accused could always say that the child was stillborn, which served as a kind of justifi cation). Th e main goal of infanticide is to get rid of an unwanted child as quickly as possible, keeping everything a complete secret. But things did not always happen exactly like that, because it was not rare that child killers were exposed.

Abstract:Infanticide is widespread across the animal kingdom, but the physiological drivers of infanticide versus care or neglect are relatively unexplored. Here, we identified salient environmental and physiological antecedents of infanticide in the mimic poison frog (Ranitomeya imitator), a biparental amphibian in which female parents feed their tadpoles unfertilized eggs. Specifically, we explored potential environmental cues influencing infant-directed behavior by evaluating changes in the frequency of food provisioning and tadpole mortality after either cross-fostering tadpoles between family units or displacing tadpoles within the terraria of their parents. We found that changes in offspring location reduce care and increase infanticide. Specifically, parents fed their displaced offspring less and, in some instances, tadpole mortality increased. We also investigated whether care and infanticide were related to changes in steroid hormone concentrations in an unfamiliar setting. Infanticide of fertilized eggs and hatchlings in the new territory included cannibalism and was associated with lower testosterone concentrations, but not with changes in corticosterone. Overall, our results support earlier findings that familiarity with offspring location drives parental investment in poison frogs, while indicating an association between low androgen levels and infanticidal behavior in an amphibian.

Abstract:Abstract The occurrence of male feticide and/or infanticide represents an extreme case of sexual conflict: an adaptive strategy of male reproduction at the expense of females. Females are predicted to develop numerous countertactics; however, it has remained unclear whether countertactics can effectively shift the balance which likely depends on the social and mating system. We conducted a 15-year, detailed observation of female and male behavior during male replacement in free-ranging golden snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana) of a multilevel society. We have identified several potential countertactics against feticide and/or infanticide, including pregnant or lactating females staying with ousted males or transferring to stay with the ousted male after being attacked, which lead to 2 of 11 fetuses succumbing to feticide, and extra-unit mating, female joint defense and transferring with their infants to other social units, which lead to 6 of 34 infants succumbing to infanticide. Female joint defenses crucially delay infanticide, providing mothers the opportunity to transfer with their vulnerable infants to another social unit where they have previously mated with the male leader or where they have female relatives. Importantly, in response to mothers starting to transfer, some males cease attacking infants, a change in behavior that is likely to be beneficial to males because during their tenures they can sire future offspring of the mothers who remain. Our findings show how dynamic interactions between males and females can be and how the conditions in multilevel societies can shift the outcome of intersexual conflict from males to females.

Abstract:Infanticide as a male reproductive tactic is widespread across mammals, and is particularly prevalent in catarrhine primates. While it has never been observed in wild orangutans, infanticide by non-sire males has been predicted to occur due to their extremely long inter-birth intervals, semi-solitary social structure, and the presence of female counter-tactics to infanticide. Here, we report on the disappearance of a healthy four-month-old infant, along with a serious foot injury suffered by the primiparous mother. No other cases of infant mortality have been observed at this site in 30 years of study. Using photographic measurements of the injury, and information on the behavior and bite size of potential predators, we evaluate the possible causes of this injury. The context, including the behavior of the female and the presence of a new male at the time of the injury, lead us to conclude that the most likely cause of the infant loss and maternal injury was male infanticide. We suggest that in orangutans, and other species where nulliparous females are not preferred mates, these females may be less successful at using paternity confusion as an infanticide avoidance tactic, thus increasing the likelihood of infanticide of their first-born infants.
Analysis of the Maternal Filicide in Terms of Forensic Medicine in Turkey: A Clinical Research

Abstract:Introduction: In the literature, 15% of the victims of homicide consists of children under 16 years of age; children under the age has been proved that they have the maximum risk. The vast majority of the victims were killed by their mothers. Thus, if mothers are the perpetrators of crime child murders are discussed in different ways, so it is conceptualized under the name of maternal filicide in the literature. This study has been performed for, in Turkey, women who killed their own children between 0-6 years old, victims of crimes, and to determine features of crime regarding on forensic medicine, eventually in order to provide a basis for taking necessary precautions and measures. Methods: This research includes 74 reports of maternal filicide cases came to IV. Board of Specialization at the Council of Forensic Medicine in Istanbul, Ministry of Justice of Republic of Turkey between 1996-2006 years. In the light of data came from these reports, the socio-demographic characteristics of mothers who attempted filicide and children who were killed, and crime occurrence methods and mothers' criminal legal responsibility were examined. Results: Mothers, suspected of the filicide crime, are often at a young age, and did not desire pregnancy, 73 of mother's do not have criminal history, and 48 of mothers confessed the crime. Found that 71 of child victims are biological kids, 38 of them were killed around age, and 20 of them were girls, 35 of them were boys. The study group, seven of defendants killed or attempted to kill more than one child at the same time. The majority of mothers committed the crime during the daylight. When filicide methods were examined strangling or throwing up the child from higher were seen the most. The majority of mothers committed crime wiıthout weapon or other objects, just by their hands. Based on decisions of IV. Board of Specialization, no significant difference was observed between the the mothers with criminal liability and mothers with non-criminal liability. Conclusion: In this study, important data procured from the demographic characteristics of the mothers, findings on conditions during the crime and the method of the crime, and mothers' psychosocial stressors, but it has been discerned that this data is limited to define the crime of filicide. At the end of the study, besides studied the parameters that directed people to commit this crime, other factors, like mental status and/or motives should be probed.

Here, we identified salient environmental and physiological antecedents of care and infanticide in the mimic poison frog ( ), a biparental and monogamous amphibian in which female parents feed their tadpoles with unfertilized eggs. Specifically, we explored potential environmental cues by evaluating changes in the frequency of food provisioning and tadpole mortality after cross-fostering tadpoles within and between morphs and displacing tadpoles within the terraria of their parents. After analyzing trophic egg deposition and observing tadpole mortality in the latter condition, we concluded that changes to offspring location reduce care and increase infanticide. Following this observation, we investigated whether steroid hormones relate to infanticide in an unfamiliar, resource-limited setting. Infanticidal behavior towards fertilized eggs and hatchlings included cannibalism and was associated with lower testosterone concentrations upon displacement to the new environment, while corticosterone concentrations did not correlate with infanticide at any sampling event. Ratios of testosterone to corticosterone were overall lower in infanticidal individuals. Overall, these findings support earlier investigations of environmental cues for offspring-directed behavior in poison frogs, while offering a novel perspective on temporal endocrine correlates of infanticide.

Abstract:Liver parenchyma synthesizes very actively several types of proteoglycans of which proteoheparan sulfate is the preponderant type (Gressner, Pazen and Greiling 1977). Their absolute and relative rates of synthesis change under a variety of pathologic and physiologic conditions, e.g. increased glycosaminoglycan production was found in postnatal rat liver (Gressner, Schulz and Greiling 1979) whereas in regenerating tissue after partial liver resection biphasic temporal modulations (an initial increase is followed by a significant decrease) were noticed (Gressner, Cadenbach and Greiling 1981). Since it is known that both in postnatal liver (Di Marco and Oliver 1978) and in actively dividing liver tissue (Fausto and Butcher 1976) the levels of intercellular cyclic nucleotides increase we studied the effects of cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP and of their butyrylated derivatives, respectively, both on the synthesis of total glycosaminoglycans and on the proportion of synthesized heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate in liver explants.
Behaviour of nonhuman primate mothers toward their dead infants: uncovering mechanisms

Abstract:In comparative thanatology, most reports for nonhuman mammals concern mothers' behavioural responses to their dead offspring: most prominently, dead-infant carrying (sometimes of extended duration); but also inspection, proximity, maternal care such as grooming, protective behaviours and filial cannibalism. Documented across many primate species, these behaviours remain poorly understood in all. The literature is dominated by relatively brief qualitative descriptions of isolated anecdotal cases in apes and monkeys. We argue for quantitative coding in case reports, alongside analyses of longitudinal records of such events to allow objective evaluation of competing theories, and systematic comparisons within and across species and populations. Obtaining necessary datasets depends on raised awareness in researchers of the importance of recording occurrences and knowledge of pertinent data to collect. We review proposed explanatory hypotheses and outline data needed to test each empirically. To determine factors influencing infant-corpse carriage, we suggest analyses of deaths resulting in 'carry' versus 'no carry'. For individual cases, we highlight behavioural variables to code and the need for hormonal samples. We discuss mothers' stress and welfare in relation to infant death, continued transportation and premature removal of the corpse. Elucidating underlying proximate and ultimate causes is important for understanding phylogeny of maternal responses to infant death.This article is part of the theme issue 'Evolutionary thanatology: impacts of the dead on the living in humans and other animals'.

Abstract:Pathology case records of 3,514 aborted fetuses, stillborn foals, or foals that died < 24 hours after birth and of 13 placentas from mares whose foals were weak or unthrifty at birth were reviewed to determine the cause of abortion, death, or illness. Fetoplacental infection caused by bacteria (n = 628), equine herpesvirus (143), fungi (61), or placentitis (351), in which an etiologic agent could not be defined, was the most common diagnosis. Complications of birth, including neonatal asphyxia, dystocia, or trauma, were the second most common cause of mortality and were diagnosed in 19% of the cases (679). Other common diagnoses were placental edema or premature separation of placenta (249), development of twins (221), contracted foal syndrome (188), other congenital anomalies (160), and umbilical cord abnormalities (121). Less common conditions were placental villous atrophy or body pregnancy (81), fetal diarrhea syndrome (34), and neoplasms or miscellaneous conditions (26). A diagnosis was not established in 16% of the cases seen (585). The study revealed that leptospirosis (78) was an important cause of bacterial abortion in mares, and that infection by a nocardioform actinomycete (45) was an important cause of chronic placentitis.

Abstract:The study of 500 blood donors, of 23 prostitutes, 22 confirmed AIDS cases and 19 ARC patients in Abidjan showed that HIV-2 prevalence in blood donors (3.4%) was somewhat higher than that of HIV-1 (2.4%). Furthermore HIV-2 alone was found associated with 14% of AIDS cases and 21% of ARC, while HIV-1 was associated with 32% of the cases. Antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 were found in 54% of AIDS and ARC cases, as well as in 48% of the prostitutes sera. These preliminary results suggest that HIV-2 is pathogenic, being causally involved in some AIDS cases and does not protect from HIV-1 pathogenic potential.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><p>Although filicide is discussed with concern in the print media and online in Malaysia, there is little empirical evidence about its aetiology or appropriate responses. We sought to elucidate the opinions of health, social work, education and policy professionals in Malaysia on the causes of, and solutions to, filicide. Fifteen informants participated in semi‐structured qualitative interviews. Informants attributed responsibility for filicide to girls and women as a consequence of their failure to comply with social norms and religious teachings; the stigmatised social position of women who are pregnant and unmarried was identified as a contributing factor. No informant mentioned the impact of gender‐based violence, including sexual violence against girls and women. Informants' views reflect the dominant discourse of filicide in Malaysia, which is that it results from women's failure to adhere to Malaysian norms of morality, religion, customs and traditions. Solutions were largely directed at changing the behaviour of girls and women. Abstract:Introduction Consistent with international promulgation on the criminalization of filicide, Ghana’s Children’s Act 1998 (560) and the Criminal Justice Act criminalizes any form of torture against children. Yet, perpetrators of filicide in Ghana may go unpunished due to the beliefs in cultural norms that justify filicide acts. The cultural narratives of filicide can impede on the application and effectiveness of the laws of filicide. Method The study employed a vignette approach to explore the views of 19 adults, who were parents between 69 years of age and 30 years of age, in rural and urban Ghana on the laws of filicide in Ghana and filicide intervention measures. The interviewees were provided with narratives on two different vignettes (developed based on real life cases), followed by semi-structured questions to probe the narratives. The interviews were analyzed following Fraser’s narrative thematic analysis procedure. Results The study identifies the association between cultural beliefs and the communities’ understanding of the concept of filicide. Though community members are aware of the criminalization of filicide acts, the majority of them were not informed about the laws against filicide in Ghana. Addressing filicide cases within the community was the most preferred option for the participants, as they believe that some children, termed “spirit children” (SC), deserve to be killed. Resorting to spiritual intervention from concoction men emerged as the normative pathway to obtain community approval for filicide. Police interventions were considered necessary in non-spiritual related filicides. Community members were only prepared to cooperate with the law in filicide cases if the filicide act has no connection with spirituality. Conclusion The study adds to understanding of the concept of filicide outside western societies. The importance of intensive community campaigns against filicide acts, and norms that support filicide acts, has relevance for all counties.
