Abstract:This study investigated the occurrence of 8 polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners from homes (n = 20), offices (n = 20), air conditioners (n = 6), and computers (n = 6). High detection frequencies for most of the congeners were observed, indicating continued widespread use of Penta-, Octa-and Deca-BDE mixtures. The median concentrations of Sigma PBDEs were 119 and 194 pg m(-3) for home air and office air, respectively. Regarding dust, the median concentrations of Sigma PBDEs were 239 and 437 ng g(-1) for home and office dust, respectively. The ratios of the median concentrations of BDE-209 to Sigma PBDEs were approximately 0.95 and 0.87 for home dust and office dust, respectively. The median concentrations of EPBDEs were 359 ng g(-1) and 350 ng(-1) for dust on air conditioner filters and the back cabinet of the computer, respectively. The ratios of the median concentrations of BDE-209 to EPBDEs were approximately 0.58 and 0.46 for air conditioner and computer samples. Running air conditioners contributed to EPBDEs in office air through direct and indirect pathways. The daily intake of PBDEs was estimated to be 2630 pg (kg bw)(-1) day(-1) for toddlers in homes and 319 pg (kg bw)(-1) day(-1) for adults in homes and offices. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Microenvironments, such as student dormitories, differ from general residential environments. They are characterized by small spaces, poor air circulation, high personnel densities, and electronic products, such as computers that are turned on for extended periods, leading to increased pollution concentrations. The limited space and poor air circulation reduce migration of contaminants, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), making it easier for PBDEs to accumulate. However, few studies have been conducted on small group dwellings, including student dormitory dwellings. We collected dust samples from student dormitories of a university to analyze the characteristics and traceability of PBDEs in dormitory microenvironments. The results showed that PBDE congeners were widely present in university dormitories and the order of median concentration of ∑ 10 PBDEs was as follows: male old-fashioned dormitory (273 ng/g) > female four-person dormitory (132 ng/g) > female two-person dormitory (132 ng/g) > male two-person dormitory (96.2 ng/g) > female old-fashioned dormitory (91.6 ng/g) > male four-person apartment (51.8 ng/g). BDE-209 was the most abundant PBDE congener, followed by BDE-47, and BDE-28. PBDEs were also found in typical electrical appliances, with higher concentrations in laptops than in desktops, and higher concentrations in desktops than in idle ones. According to Spearman correlation and Principal Component Analysis (PCA), we also found that boards and wallpaper materials were common sources of contamination in the microenvironment of student dormitories, and that female dormitories had more sources of PBDE emissions. Human exposure to PBDEs in students is below the US Environmental Protection Agency reference dose. Although exposure to PBDEs generated in dormitories does not pose a significant health risk, the potential hazards of PBDEs to the reagent environment remain to be investigated.

Abstract:Laboratories at Zhejiang University of Technology in Hangzhou were selected to ascertain the pollution status of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in indoor city air. Air and dustfall samples were collected during 2015 and analysed using gas chromatography. This study provides important information on the typical indoor pollution of brominated flame retardants in urban areas in China, particularly in university laboratories. The annual geometric mean concentration of PBDEs of passive air samples in the university laboratories was 545.64pg/m3, corresponding to a medium level of air pollution. The highest level was recorded in winter and the lowest in summer. The average concentration of PBDEs in dustfall was 8198.69ng/g, generally higher than that reported in other studies. The annual geometric mean of deposition fluxes of PBDEs was 121.96ng/(m2d). BDE-209 was the main congener of PBDEs in all areas studied, and BDE-47, BDE-66, and BDE-99 also made a significant contribution to the total concentration of PBDEs·The detection rates were 100% for BDE-17, -28, and -66 in air samples, while the detection rates of BDE-17, -28, -71 and -66 were all 100% in dustfall samples. PBDE concentrations and deposition fluxes were unevenly distributed and showed sampling point differences, mainly attributed to differences in the materials used for indoor furnishings, the function of the room, the ventilation systems and the surrounding environment. Seasonal variations of PBDE concentrations in air samples ranged as winter>autumn>spring>summer, while seasonal variations in dustfall samples were winter>summer>autumn>spring. Two significant positive linear relationship were found between the total quantity of electronic equipment (r=0.722, p<0.05) and the quantity of plywood desktop (r=0.745, p<0.05) with the deposition fluxes of PBDEs.

Abstract:Much attention has been paid on polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in household dust due to their ubiquitous occurrences in the environment. Based on the data from 59 articles sampled from 2005 to 2020, we investigated the spatio-temporal distribution, sources, and health risk of 8 PBDE homologues in household dusts worldwide. BDE-209 is the predominant PBDE in household dusts, followed by BDE-99 and BDE-47. The total concentrations of PBDEs (∑ 8 PBDEs) are found to be high in household dusts sampled from 2005 to 2008 and show a significant decline trend from 2009 to 2016 ( p < 0.05) and a little upward tendency from 2017 to 2020. The concentrations of PBDEs in household dusts vary greatly in different countries of the world. The use of penta-BDE is the main source of three to five bromo-biphenyl ether monomers contributing 17.4% of ∑ 8 PBDEs, while BDE-209 and BDE-183 are derived from the use of household appliances contributing 82.6% of ∑ 8 PBDEs. Ingestion is the main exposure route for adults and toddlers, followed by dermal contact. The values of hazard index (HI) exposed to PBDEs in household dusts are all less than 1 for both adults and toddlers, indicating a low non-cancer risk. The incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRs) of BDE-209 are less than 10 −6 for both adults and toddlers, suggesting a negligible risk. However, the total carcinogenic risk of toddlers is higher than that of adults, indicating that much attention should be paid to toddlers exposed to BDE-209 in household dust.

Abstract:Abstract House dust is the main source of human exposure to flame retardants by ingestion. This study investigated the occurrence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in indoor dust from 22 houses in Shanghai, China. House dust was separately collected from the floor and elevated furnishings surface (mostly between 0.5 and 2 m height) for comparison. The concentrations of ∑ 22 PBDEs ranged from 19.4 to 3280 ng/g (with a geometric mean of 203 ng/g) and from 55.1 to 792 ng/g (with a geometric mean of 166 ng/g) in floor dust (FD) and elevated surface dust (ESD), respectively. BDE-209 was the predominant congener, accounting for about 73.1% of total PBDE burdens. In terms of congener profiles, the comparison of FD and ESD revealed no significant differences except for the ratio of BDE-47/BDE-99. ESD samples displayed a ratio of BDE-47/BDE-99 very similar to commercial penta-BDE products DE-71 while the ratio in FD was exceptionally higher. Significant correlation was found between concentrations of commercial penta-BDE compositions in FD and ESD ( p < 0.05). Except for some occasional values, PBDE levels in house dust exhibited temporal stability. Human exposure to PBDEs via dust ingestion was estimated. The highest daily intake of PBDEs was for toddlers by using 95th percentile concentrations of PBDEs via high dust ingestion in FD (23.07 ng/kg bw/day). About 20-fold difference in exposure estimates between toddlers and adults supports that toddlers are facing greater risk from indoor floor dust. Expectedly, this study highlighted the point that residents in Shanghai were exposed to low doses of PBDEs in house dust.

Abstract:Ninety-seven seasonal, passive indoor and outdoor air samples were collected in Shanghai to study polybrominated diphenyl ethers (ΣPBDEs, 16 congeners including BDE-209), their concentrations, composition profiles, seasonal variations, influencing factors, emission sources, and human inhalation exposure. In summer, median indoor concentrations of Σ15PBDEs (excluding BDE-209) were 82 pg m−3 in offices and 30 pg m−3 in homes, ∼3 times the winter concentrations. The average summer concentration of 130 pg m−3 BDE-209 in homes was higher than that in offices (which was 90 pg m−3); in winter, home and office concentrations were similar (46 and 47 pg m−3, respectively). For outdoor air, the median concentration of Σ15PBDEs in summer (12 pg m−3) was twice the winter concentration (6 pg m−3), while the summer median concentration of BDE-209 (398 pg m−3) was half the winter concentration (794 pg m−3). Higher concentrations of Σ15PBDEs indoors compared with outdoors showed that the lower brominated BDEs found were mainly from indoor sources. Meanwhile, the much lower indoor concentration of BDE-209 compared with the outdoors showed that BDE-209 came mainly from outdoor sources. The data set also indicated that electric/electronic appliances were the main sources of indoor ΣPBDEs, and old appliances emitted more lower brominated BDEs, while industrial emissions should be the main source of the outdoor BDE-209. Median daily human exposures to Σ15PBDEs and BDE-209 through inhalation were estimated to be 0.23 and 1.73 ng day−1 in winter and 0.65 and 2.28 ng day−1 in summer for adults. The human inhalation exposure to ΣPBDEs (3.44 ng day−1 for adults and 1.33 ng day−1 for toddlers) was comparable to that from eating contaminated fish for both toddlers and adults in Shanghai.

Abstract:Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were measured in air (TSP and PM2.5) and dust samples collected from 16 households and the corresponding workplaces of eight volunteer citizens in Shanghai, China. The PBDEs concentrations in the workplace air (mean: 281 ± 126 pg m−3) were over two times higher than those in the household (121 ± 44.0 pg m−3), while the mean levels of PBDEs in dust were 995 ± 547 and 544 ± 188 ng g−1 for workplace and household, respectively. BDE209 was the most abundant congener in all samples. PBDEs appeared to be composed of mostly small particles. The Cparticle/Cdust ratios of less brominated PBDEs in PM2.5 were higher than those in TSP, while the values were approximately constant for the more brominated PBDEs. A correlation analysis by network indicated different sources and behavior of the PBDE congeners. The results of a cluster analysis were displayed on a heat map that specified the source and abundance of each PBDE congener. The daily PBDE exposure via dust ingestion was the predominant part of the total intake and was more than 10 times higher than the intake via inhalation.

Abstract:Household dust is an important source of premature exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), especially for children. In this onsite study, 246 dust samples were collected from 224 households in nine Chinese cities during 2018-2019. Questionnaires were administered to explore the association between household-related information and PBDEs in household dust. The median concentration of Σ12PBDEs in household dust from 9 cities was 138 ng/g (94-227 ng/g), with the arithmetic mean of 240 ± 401 ng/g. Among the nine cities, the highest median concentration of Σ12PBDEs in household dust was found in Mianyang (295.57 ng/g), while the lowest was found in Wuxi (23.15 ng/g). BDE-71 was the most dominant congener, ranging from 42.08 % to 98.15 % of the 12 PBDE congeners among 9 cities. Three potential sources for the indoor environment were Penta-BDE, Octa-BDE commercial products, and photolytic bromine from Deca-BDEs based on the largest contribution (81.24 %). Under the moderate exposure scenario, the exposure levels through ingestion and dermal absorption for children were 7.30 × 10-1 ng/kg BW/day and 3.26 × 10-2 ng/kg BW/day, respectively. Temperature, CO2, years of residence, income, family size, household size, use of computers, heating, use of insecticide, and use of humidifiers were influential factors for PBDE concentrations in household dust. Based on the evidence of the correlation between PBDEs and these household parameters, it can be applied to reduce PBDE concentrations in household dust, which is a basis for controlling PBDEs pollution in Chinese households and protecting population health.

Thus, distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) will vary with the particle size of dust and the spatial position of settled dust, as well as the location of PBDE sources, such that PBDE levels in settled dust on the floor will be different from those of settled dust above the floor (Björklund et al. 2012; Wu et al. 2010). Because of the spatial position of particles, humans are likely to be exposed only to particles of specific sizes. In addition, exposures to children and adults may be different because particles to which children and adults are exposed often have different spatial position and particle size distribution (Cao et al. 2012; Ruby and Lowney 2012). In addition, the reliability of human exposure assessments may be substantially influenced by between-room and within-room spatial variability of PBDE concentrations in indoor dust (Muenhor and Harrad 2012).As reported in many other studies, Stapleton et al. (2012) reported that for dust sampling, they vacuumed “the equivalent of the entire floor-surface area for the room … by gently drawing the crevice tool across the top of all surfaces,” and they selected fractions < 500 µm for their analysis. Only a few studies have demonstrated that particles > 250 µm are not appropriate for risk assessment of human exposures (Cao et al. 2012). Thus, if the dust samples from the house and from handwipes have different particle size distributions and are from different spatial positions in the indoor environment, it is inevitable that the PBDE levels in handwipes and house dust will be different and the correlation between PBDE in human serum and house dust will be weaker.For human exposure assessment, we propose that indoor dust samples to be analyzed should be from relevant spatial positions and of specific particle size. By improving sampling strategies, we can obtain more accurate results and the correlations between PBDEs in human tissues and indoor dust will be much more accurate. Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in Indoor Dusts from University Dormitories and Printing Shops in Xinxiang, China

Abstract:Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were investigated in indoor dusts from university dormitories and printing shops in Xinxiang, China. The mean concentrations of Sigma 13PBDEs were 105 +/- 64.2 ng/g dry weight (dw), 31.7 +/- 26.4 ng/g dw and 695 +/- 379 ng/g dw in dusts from male dormitory, female dormitory and printing shop, respectively. Notably, significantly higher PBDE concentrations were found in printing shop than in university dormitory. BDE-153 (84.5 +/- 165 ng/g dw), BDE-190 (76.1 +/- 179 ng/g dw) and BDE-138 (24.2 +/- 29.7 ng/g dw) displayed the highest levels in the 29 indoor dust samples. BDE-138,-153,-190 and-71 showed higher proportion in indoor dusts from university dormitories and printing shops. More debromination process of PBDEs occurred in dust from university dormitory, whereas PBDEs in printing shop were more likely to come directly from external electronic devices. Significantly positive correlations were revealed between the PBDE levels and the quantity of electronic equipment in dust, indicating that electronic devices had significant influence on PBDE contamination in indoor environment. Generally, PBDE concentrations in the present study were lower than the levels in indoor dusts from other studies worldwide. The estimated daily intake values of Sigma 13PBDEs displayed printing shop (80.4 ng/kg body weight (bw)/day) > male dormitory (11.3 ng/kg bw/day) > female dormitory (3.97 ng/kg bw/day), which were generally higher than other researches, but well below the EPA reference doses.
A meta-analysis of factors influencing concentrations of brominated flame retardants and organophosphate esters in indoor dust

Abstract:Current assessments of human exposure to flame retardants (FRs) via dust ingestion rely on measurements of FR concentrations in dust samples collected at specific points in time and space. Such exposure assessments are rendered further uncertain by the possibility of within-room and within-building spatial and temporal variability, differences in dust particle size fraction analysed, as well as differences in dust sampling approach. A meta-analysis of peer-reviewed data was undertaken to evaluate the impact of these factors on reported concentrations of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and organophosphate esters (OPEs) in dust and subsequent human exposure estimates. Except for a few cases, concentrations of FRs in elevated surface dust (ESD) exceeded significantly those in floor dust (FD). The implications of this for exposure assessment are not entirely clear. However, they imply that analysing FD only will underestimate exposure for adults who likely rarely ingest floor dust, while analysing ESD only would overestimate exposure for toddlers who likely rarely ingest elevated surface dust. Considerable within-building spatial variability was observed with no specific trend between concentrations of either BFRs or OPEs in living rooms and bedrooms in the same homes, implying that exposure assessments based solely on sampling one room are uncertain. Substantial differences in FR concentrations were observed in different particle size fractions of dust. This is likely partly attributable to the presence of abraded polymer particles/fibres with high FR concentrations in larger particle size fractions. This has implications for exposure assessment as adherence to skin and subsequent FR uptake via ingestion and dermal sorption varies with particle size. Analysing dust samples obtained from a householder vacuum cleaner (HHVC) compared with researcher collected dust (RCD) will underestimate human exposure to the most of studied contaminants. This is likely due to the losses of volatile FRs from HHVC dust over the extended period such dust spends in the dust bag. Temporal variability in FR concentrations is apparent during month-to-month or seasonal monitoring, with such variability likely due more to changes in room contents rather than seasonal temperature variation.
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in dust in typical indoor public places in Hangzhou: Levels and an assessment of human exposure

Abstract:Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are organic pollutants (POPs) with the characteristics of environmental persistence, long-distance transmission in nature, biological accumulation and toxic effects on human health. To investigate the level of contamination due to PBDEs in typical indoor public places in Hangzhou, dust samples were collected from ten supermarkets, three electronic markets and five different areas throughout one commodity market. Based on sample pretreatment and GC-ECD instrumental analysis, the contamination characteristics, sources and the influencing factors of 14 PBDE congeners were analyzed. The results revealed that the mean of ∑14PBDEs in dust in the supermarkets and electronic markets was 546.13 ng/g and 1140.05 ng/g, respectively, while in the commodity market the mean was 1005.42 ng/g and varied in the five different areas as follows: shoe areas (1367.22 ng/g) > parking lot (1001.05 ng/g) > waiting halls (970.31 ng/g) > packet areas (933.23 ng/g) > curtain areas (755.28 ng/g). The high levels of PBDE were attributed to the quantity of electrical appliances in the supermarkets (r = 0.708*, p < 0.05) and the electronic markets (r = 0.799**, p < 0.05) through Spearman correlation coefficient analysis. BDE-209 was the dominant congener, accounting for 53.72% in supermarkets and 64.25% in electronic markets. The calculated inhalation exposure revealed that the exposure level of PBDEs varied in supermarkets, electronic markets and commodity markets, with values of 0.476 ng/day/kg, 0.993 ng/day/kg and 0.876 ng/day/kg, respectively. Moreover, BDE-209's contribution to the total intake of PBDEs was the highest, with a value of 0.072-0.970 ng/day/kg, while the value of BDE-183 was the lowest, with a value of 0-0.020 ng/day/kg. The exposure level of PBDEs in the studied indoor public places was lower than the reference dose of EPA.

Abstract:Aldol reaction is one of the most important methods for the formation of carbon-carbon bonds. Because of its significance and usefulness, asymmetric versions of this reaction have been realized with different approaches in the past. Over the last decade, the area of organocatalysis has made significant progresses. As one of most studied reactions in organocatalyses, organocatalyzed aldol reaction has emerged as a powerful tool for the synthesis of a large number of useful products in optically enriched forms. In this review, we summarize our efforts on the development of novel organocatalyzed aldol reactions for the enantioselective synthesis of biological active molecules. Literatures closely related to our studies are also covered.

Abstract:GB virus C/hepatitis G virus (GBV‐C/HGV) has been characterised as a novel flavivirus, and to date three known genotypes have been cloned. Greater genetic variation of GBV‐C/HGV has been demonstrated in West African isolates, but no major deletions have been shown in the 5′ non‐coding region (NCR). The 5′NCR regulates protein translation via an internal ribosomal entry site (IRES). We cloned, sequenced, and analysed a 344‐bp polymerase chain reaction (PCR) product, representing >60% of the 5′NCR, from 32 GBV‐C/HGV PCR‐positive volunteers. Wild‐type virus amplicons were detected in all samples. However, 5/32 (15.6%) also amplified another fragment of between 205 and 231 bp. Sequence analysis showed all cloned PCR fragments to be GBV‐C/HGV‐specific. A typical deletion of 113–131 bp with minor variation was detected in isolates generating the smaller bands. RNA secondary structure analysis showed the deletions to be over domains II and III. This finding suggests that nucleotides 303–444 may be non‐essential for 5′NCR functioning. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated a novel fourth South African genotype, distinct from genotypes 1–3 with DNA distances of >0.1000. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) values for the wild‐type and mutant samples were normal. This study documents the first major deletion in the 5′NCR of GBV‐C/HGV, and suggests that bases 303–444 may not be essential for viral replication and ribosomal entry. Abstract:In order to evaluate the pollution degree of the dust in Hangzhou City, the indoor dust samples of 19 offices, families and students' dormitories were collected from August to March in 2013 at Hangzhou for evaluating the pollution level of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), to analyze concentrations of 14 PBDEs congeners and congener distribution as well as the possible influencing factors, and to estimate the PBDEs exposure levels of adults and children through the dust intake. The results showed that the average ∑14PBDEs of office was 9.28×102 ng·g-1, and the median was 1.03×103 ng·g-1; the average ∑14PBDEs of family was 7.83×102 ng·g-1, and the median was 9.11×102 ng·g-1; the average ∑14PBDEs of student dormitory was 4.07×102 ng·g-1, and the median was 4.03×102 ng·g-1. The pollution level of the office was higher than that of the living environment. BDE-209 was the largest monomer, and its contribution was 75.48%, followed by BDE-190, BDE-154 and BDE-71.PBDEs exposure levels of adults and children by dust intake were 13.12-32.63 ng·d-1 and 32.40-54.54 ng·d-1, respectively. Children's PBDEs exposure in the dust was higher than that of the adults, mainly because the average dust intake of children was higher than that of adults. The analysis showed that the PBDEs from indoor dust intake was a potential health hazard, and the biggest potential harm to children.

Abstract:The concentration of TBBPA in dust samples from automobiles (n = 14), computer laboratories (n = 8), homes (n = 7), and offices (n = 7), and, also, PBDE concentrations in the indoor dust of 19 personal and previously owned automobiles in Durban, South Africa, were determined. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry was applied for the separation, identification, and quantitation of TBBPA and PBDEs. The median concentrations of TBBPA were 1156, 269, 120, and 492 ng g−1 in automobiles, computer laboratories, homes, and offices, respectively. The ∑n = 8 PBDE in 19 automobile samples ranged from 573 to 11,833 ng g−1. BDE-209 accounted for approximately 42 % of ∑n = 8 PBDE in the samples. Household characteristics influenced the distribution of TBBPA in the various microenvironments. By assuming an average dust ingestion rate, and a median TBBPA concentration, the ∑DED (in ng kg−1 bw day−1) of TBBPA is 0.08, 0.08, and 0.60, for an adult, teenager, and toddler, respectively. These doses are similar to dust ingestion intakes reported for Asian countries where there is a high demand for TBBPA as a flame retardant. Similarly, automobiles provide ample opportunity for human exposure to PBDEs via dust ingestion, particularly for toddlers and occupationally exposed adults.

Abstract:Despite the restrictions on polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDDs), these chemicals are still ubiquitous environmental pollutants. In this study, we measured the concentrations and profiles of 17 PBDE congeners and 3 HBCDD isomers in indoor dust samples collected from 23 provinces and cities across China. The summed concentrations of PBDEs (Σ17PBDEs) ranged from 4.19 to 817 ng/g, with an average of 171 ± 184 ng/g. BDE-209 was the most abundant congener. The concentrations of HBCDDs ranged from 6.65 to 1335 ng/g, with an average of 236 ± 324 ng/g. Unlike commercial HBCDD formulations, α-HBCDD was the predominant isomer in the indoor dust samples analyzed. Geographical distributions showed that the concentrations of PBDEs and HBCDDs varied significantly among different regions. Higher PBDE and HBCDD levels were observed in samples from eastern coastal and economically developed regions. Further, we estimated the daily intakes of PBDEs and HBCDDs through the routes of dust ingestion and dust dermal absorption for different age groups. Dust dermal absorption is an unneglectable exposure pathway to PBDEs and HBCDs for the Chinese population. Among the age groups, infants had the highest exposure via dust dermal absorption, and toddlers had the highest exposure via dust ingestion. Compared with the threshold values, the exposure doses of PBDEs and HBCDDs are unlikely to pose significant health concerns for both infants and adults in China. This is the first national survey of PBDEs and HBCDDs in indoor dust samples across China after the restriction.

Abstract:The levels and distributions of hexabromocyclododecane diastereoisomers (HBCDs) (including α, β, and γ-HBCD) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) were investigated in indoor dust from bedrooms and offices. HBCDs diastereoisomers were the most abundant compounds in the dust samples, and the concentrations of ∑HBCDs in the bedrooms and offices ranged from 10.6 to 290.1 ng/g and 17.6 to 1521.9 ng/g, respectively. The concentrations of target compounds in the offices were generally higher than those in the bedrooms, probably due to the presence of more electrical equipment in the offices. In this study, highest levels of target compounds were all found in the electronics. In the bedrooms, the highest mean level of ∑HBCDs was found in air conditioning filter dust (118.57 ng/g), while the personal computer table surface dust showed the peak mean concentrations of ∑HBCDs (290.74 ng/g) and TBBPA (539.69 ng/g) in the offices. Interestingly, a significantly positive correlation was observed between the concentrations of ∑HBCDs in windowsills and beddings dust in the bedrooms, suggesting beddings was one of the crucial sources of ∑HBCDs in the bedrooms. The high dust ingestion values of ∑HBCDs and TBBPA were 0.046 and 0.086 ng/kg bw/day for adults, while 0.811 and 0.04 ng/kg bw/day for toddlers, respectively. The high dermal exposure values of ∑HBCDs were 0.026 and 0.226 ng/kg bw/day for adults and toddlers, respectively. Except for dust ingestion, other human exposure pathways (such as the dermal contact with beddings and furniture) should be paid attention.

Abstract:This study documents the temporal variability in concentrations of flame retardants (FRs) in floor dust from three offices in Beijing, China. Dust from Office A (OAD) was collected weekly from March to August, 2012, and sampling of dust from Office B and C (OBD and OCD) was conducted fortnightly (each two weeks) from March to December 2012. With intensive and continuous sampling, we report for the first time on clear and coherent temporal trends of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and phosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) in indoor dust. The observed mean concentrations of ∑9PBDEs, ∑4NBFRs and ∑9PFRs, were 554, 11,100 and 128,000ngg−1 in OAD; 7560, 5000 and 17,300ngg−1 in OBD; and 4750, 3550 and 17,200ngg−1 in OCD, respectively. With exception of PBDEs, concentrations of FRs were elevated in OAD than in OBD and OCD. Two to ten-fold variations were observed between the minimum and maximum concentrations of FRs in the same office, indicating that the sampling moment exerts a substantial influence on the level of FR contamination. Different seasonality was distinctively found between BFRs and PFRs. Except for a few occasional abnormal values, BFR levels in office dust were generally constant among different seasons. The abundance rank order for PFRs was: winter>autumn>summer, with peak values occurring in late winter and early spring. This pattern may be attributable to the fact that PFRs are more sensitive to temperature changes compared to PBDEs and NBFRs owning to their higher volatilities. The absence of significant seasonal variation for BFR concentrations in indoor dust compared to outdoor air and dust concentrations is also discussed.
