Abstract:Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were measured in air (TSP and PM2.5) and dust samples collected from 16 households and the corresponding workplaces of eight volunteer citizens in Shanghai, China. The PBDEs concentrations in the workplace air (mean: 281 ± 126 pg m−3) were over two times higher than those in the household (121 ± 44.0 pg m−3), while the mean levels of PBDEs in dust were 995 ± 547 and 544 ± 188 ng g−1 for workplace and household, respectively. BDE209 was the most abundant congener in all samples. PBDEs appeared to be composed of mostly small particles. The Cparticle/Cdust ratios of less brominated PBDEs in PM2.5 were higher than those in TSP, while the values were approximately constant for the more brominated PBDEs. A correlation analysis by network indicated different sources and behavior of the PBDE congeners. The results of a cluster analysis were displayed on a heat map that specified the source and abundance of each PBDE congener. The daily PBDE exposure via dust ingestion was the predominant part of the total intake and was more than 10 times higher than the intake via inhalation.

Abstract:To obtain a comprehensive understanding of the main source and route of human exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), the daily intake and uptakes through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact for Shanghai residents were estimated on the basis of the PBDE concentrations in the air obtained in the present study and previous data reported in the literature. The PBDE concentrations in the gas and particle phases collected in Shanghai were 0.99-57.5 and 0.1-234 pg/m(3), respectively. The contamination levels of PBDEs in the air in Shanghai were similar to or slightly lower than the data from other regions. The estimated total daily intakes of PBDEs through the three routes were 607 and 1,636 ng/day for children and adults, respectively, while they decreased to 63.0 and 93.1 ng/day when the uptake efficiency (which is the fraction of contaminants that reaches the systemic circulation) of PBDEs was added to calculation. The results showed that dust is the main source of human exposure to PBDEs when PBDE uptake efficiency was not considered. It accounted for 66.2-79.2% of the total PBDE intake. However, food is the main source, which accounted for 66.6-75.1%, when the uptake efficiency was added to calculation. Among the three routes, dermal contact (53.1-76.6%) is the main pathway, whereas ingestion (84.7-92.9%) is the main one when the uptake efficiency was considered. Furthermore, risk assessment showed that the PBDE exposure amount would not cause obvious non-cancer and cancer risks to local residents.

Abstract:Abstract House dust is the main source of human exposure to flame retardants by ingestion. This study investigated the occurrence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in indoor dust from 22 houses in Shanghai, China. House dust was separately collected from the floor and elevated furnishings surface (mostly between 0.5 and 2 m height) for comparison. The concentrations of ∑ 22 PBDEs ranged from 19.4 to 3280 ng/g (with a geometric mean of 203 ng/g) and from 55.1 to 792 ng/g (with a geometric mean of 166 ng/g) in floor dust (FD) and elevated surface dust (ESD), respectively. BDE-209 was the predominant congener, accounting for about 73.1% of total PBDE burdens. In terms of congener profiles, the comparison of FD and ESD revealed no significant differences except for the ratio of BDE-47/BDE-99. ESD samples displayed a ratio of BDE-47/BDE-99 very similar to commercial penta-BDE products DE-71 while the ratio in FD was exceptionally higher. Significant correlation was found between concentrations of commercial penta-BDE compositions in FD and ESD ( p < 0.05). Except for some occasional values, PBDE levels in house dust exhibited temporal stability. Human exposure to PBDEs via dust ingestion was estimated. The highest daily intake of PBDEs was for toddlers by using 95th percentile concentrations of PBDEs via high dust ingestion in FD (23.07 ng/kg bw/day). About 20-fold difference in exposure estimates between toddlers and adults supports that toddlers are facing greater risk from indoor floor dust. Expectedly, this study highlighted the point that residents in Shanghai were exposed to low doses of PBDEs in house dust.

Abstract:Household dust is an important source of premature exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), especially for children. In this onsite study, 246 dust samples were collected from 224 households in nine Chinese cities during 2018-2019. Questionnaires were administered to explore the association between household-related information and PBDEs in household dust. The median concentration of Σ12PBDEs in household dust from 9 cities was 138 ng/g (94-227 ng/g), with the arithmetic mean of 240 ± 401 ng/g. Among the nine cities, the highest median concentration of Σ12PBDEs in household dust was found in Mianyang (295.57 ng/g), while the lowest was found in Wuxi (23.15 ng/g). BDE-71 was the most dominant congener, ranging from 42.08 % to 98.15 % of the 12 PBDE congeners among 9 cities. Three potential sources for the indoor environment were Penta-BDE, Octa-BDE commercial products, and photolytic bromine from Deca-BDEs based on the largest contribution (81.24 %). Under the moderate exposure scenario, the exposure levels through ingestion and dermal absorption for children were 7.30 × 10-1 ng/kg BW/day and 3.26 × 10-2 ng/kg BW/day, respectively. Temperature, CO2, years of residence, income, family size, household size, use of computers, heating, use of insecticide, and use of humidifiers were influential factors for PBDE concentrations in household dust. Based on the evidence of the correlation between PBDEs and these household parameters, it can be applied to reduce PBDE concentrations in household dust, which is a basis for controlling PBDEs pollution in Chinese households and protecting population health.

Abstract:Ninety-seven seasonal, passive indoor and outdoor air samples were collected in Shanghai to study polybrominated diphenyl ethers (ΣPBDEs, 16 congeners including BDE-209), their concentrations, composition profiles, seasonal variations, influencing factors, emission sources, and human inhalation exposure. In summer, median indoor concentrations of Σ15PBDEs (excluding BDE-209) were 82 pg m−3 in offices and 30 pg m−3 in homes, ∼3 times the winter concentrations. The average summer concentration of 130 pg m−3 BDE-209 in homes was higher than that in offices (which was 90 pg m−3); in winter, home and office concentrations were similar (46 and 47 pg m−3, respectively). For outdoor air, the median concentration of Σ15PBDEs in summer (12 pg m−3) was twice the winter concentration (6 pg m−3), while the summer median concentration of BDE-209 (398 pg m−3) was half the winter concentration (794 pg m−3). Higher concentrations of Σ15PBDEs indoors compared with outdoors showed that the lower brominated BDEs found were mainly from indoor sources. Meanwhile, the much lower indoor concentration of BDE-209 compared with the outdoors showed that BDE-209 came mainly from outdoor sources. The data set also indicated that electric/electronic appliances were the main sources of indoor ΣPBDEs, and old appliances emitted more lower brominated BDEs, while industrial emissions should be the main source of the outdoor BDE-209. Median daily human exposures to Σ15PBDEs and BDE-209 through inhalation were estimated to be 0.23 and 1.73 ng day−1 in winter and 0.65 and 2.28 ng day−1 in summer for adults. The human inhalation exposure to ΣPBDEs (3.44 ng day−1 for adults and 1.33 ng day−1 for toddlers) was comparable to that from eating contaminated fish for both toddlers and adults in Shanghai.

Abstract:In order to evaluate the pollution degree of the dust in Hangzhou City, the indoor dust samples of 19 offices, families and students' dormitories were collected from August to March in 2013 at Hangzhou for evaluating the pollution level of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), to analyze concentrations of 14 PBDEs congeners and congener distribution as well as the possible influencing factors, and to estimate the PBDEs exposure levels of adults and children through the dust intake. The results showed that the average ∑14PBDEs of office was 9.28×102 ng·g-1, and the median was 1.03×103 ng·g-1; the average ∑14PBDEs of family was 7.83×102 ng·g-1, and the median was 9.11×102 ng·g-1; the average ∑14PBDEs of student dormitory was 4.07×102 ng·g-1, and the median was 4.03×102 ng·g-1. The pollution level of the office was higher than that of the living environment. BDE-209 was the largest monomer, and its contribution was 75.48%, followed by BDE-190, BDE-154 and BDE-71.PBDEs exposure levels of adults and children by dust intake were 13.12-32.63 ng·d-1 and 32.40-54.54 ng·d-1, respectively. Children's PBDEs exposure in the dust was higher than that of the adults, mainly because the average dust intake of children was higher than that of adults. The analysis showed that the PBDEs from indoor dust intake was a potential health hazard, and the biggest potential harm to children.

Abstract:This study investigated the occurrence of 8 polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners from homes (n = 20), offices (n = 20), air conditioners (n = 6), and computers (n = 6). High detection frequencies for most of the congeners were observed, indicating continued widespread use of Penta-, Octa-and Deca-BDE mixtures. The median concentrations of Sigma PBDEs were 119 and 194 pg m(-3) for home air and office air, respectively. Regarding dust, the median concentrations of Sigma PBDEs were 239 and 437 ng g(-1) for home and office dust, respectively. The ratios of the median concentrations of BDE-209 to Sigma PBDEs were approximately 0.95 and 0.87 for home dust and office dust, respectively. The median concentrations of EPBDEs were 359 ng g(-1) and 350 ng(-1) for dust on air conditioner filters and the back cabinet of the computer, respectively. The ratios of the median concentrations of BDE-209 to EPBDEs were approximately 0.58 and 0.46 for air conditioner and computer samples. Running air conditioners contributed to EPBDEs in office air through direct and indirect pathways. The daily intake of PBDEs was estimated to be 2630 pg (kg bw)(-1) day(-1) for toddlers in homes and 319 pg (kg bw)(-1) day(-1) for adults in homes and offices. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. A nationwide survey of 20 legacy brominated flame retardants in indoor dust from China: continuing occurrence, national distribution, and implication for human exposure

Abstract:Despite the restrictions on polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDDs), these chemicals are still ubiquitous environmental pollutants. In this study, we measured the concentrations and profiles of 17 PBDE congeners and 3 HBCDD isomers in indoor dust samples collected from 23 provinces and cities across China. The summed concentrations of PBDEs (Σ17PBDEs) ranged from 4.19 to 817 ng/g, with an average of 171 ± 184 ng/g. BDE-209 was the most abundant congener. The concentrations of HBCDDs ranged from 6.65 to 1335 ng/g, with an average of 236 ± 324 ng/g. Unlike commercial HBCDD formulations, α-HBCDD was the predominant isomer in the indoor dust samples analyzed. Geographical distributions showed that the concentrations of PBDEs and HBCDDs varied significantly among different regions. Higher PBDE and HBCDD levels were observed in samples from eastern coastal and economically developed regions. Further, we estimated the daily intakes of PBDEs and HBCDDs through the routes of dust ingestion and dust dermal absorption for different age groups. Dust dermal absorption is an unneglectable exposure pathway to PBDEs and HBCDs for the Chinese population. Among the age groups, infants had the highest exposure via dust dermal absorption, and toddlers had the highest exposure via dust ingestion. Compared with the threshold values, the exposure doses of PBDEs and HBCDDs are unlikely to pose significant health concerns for both infants and adults in China. This is the first national survey of PBDEs and HBCDDs in indoor dust samples across China after the restriction.

Abstract:Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are organic pollutants (POPs) with the characteristics of environmental persistence, long-distance transmission in nature, biological accumulation and toxic effects on human health. To investigate the level of contamination due to PBDEs in typical indoor public places in Hangzhou, dust samples were collected from ten supermarkets, three electronic markets and five different areas throughout one commodity market. Based on sample pretreatment and GC-ECD instrumental analysis, the contamination characteristics, sources and the influencing factors of 14 PBDE congeners were analyzed. The results revealed that the mean of ∑14PBDEs in dust in the supermarkets and electronic markets was 546.13 ng/g and 1140.05 ng/g, respectively, while in the commodity market the mean was 1005.42 ng/g and varied in the five different areas as follows: shoe areas (1367.22 ng/g) > parking lot (1001.05 ng/g) > waiting halls (970.31 ng/g) > packet areas (933.23 ng/g) > curtain areas (755.28 ng/g). The high levels of PBDE were attributed to the quantity of electrical appliances in the supermarkets (r = 0.708*, p < 0.05) and the electronic markets (r = 0.799**, p < 0.05) through Spearman correlation coefficient analysis. BDE-209 was the dominant congener, accounting for 53.72% in supermarkets and 64.25% in electronic markets. The calculated inhalation exposure revealed that the exposure level of PBDEs varied in supermarkets, electronic markets and commodity markets, with values of 0.476 ng/day/kg, 0.993 ng/day/kg and 0.876 ng/day/kg, respectively. Moreover, BDE-209's contribution to the total intake of PBDEs was the highest, with a value of 0.072-0.970 ng/day/kg, while the value of BDE-183 was the lowest, with a value of 0-0.020 ng/day/kg. The exposure level of PBDEs in the studied indoor public places was lower than the reference dose of EPA.
Food As a Main Route of Adult Exposure to PBDEs in Shenzhen, China

Abstract:The present study measured eight PBDE congeners' (BDE-28, 47, 99, 100, 153, 154, 183, and 209) exposure via ingestion of indoor dust and soil, inhalation, and food consumption. Contributions to PBDEs exposure from different media revealed that indoor dust (dust suspended in air) was not an important exposure route for PBDE congeners for adults in Shenzhen, China. Food consumption contributed more to daily intake of Σ(8)BDE, especially for lower-brominated PBDE congeners. Based on calculated average total daily intake, hazard quotients were determined to estimate the non-cancer risks of PBDE exposure. Meanwhile, cancer risk was also estimated assuming that the oral cancer slope factors of all PBDE congeners are equipotent as BDE-209. The hazard quotients ranged from 1.2×10(-5) (BDE-209) to 2.0×10(-2) (BDE-47), suggesting a low deleterious risk with regard to PBDEs. The cancer risk value ranged from 1.1×10(-24) to 5.5×10(-21) implying that the total risks due to exposure to PBDEs via all exposure routes are extremely low for adults.
Daily intake of polybrominated diphenyl ethers via dust and diet from an e-waste recycling area in China

Abstract:This study was designed to estimate the human risk to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) exposure via two main exposure routes (dust and diet) in an e-waste recycling area in southern China. A total of 134 dust samples and 129 food samples were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The mean concentration of ΣPBDE in in-house dust (38,685ng/g dw) was higher than that in out-house dust (24,595ng/g). For food samples, the highest concentration of ΣPBDE was found in fish and shellfish (2755ng/kg ww), followed in descending order by eggs (2423ng/kg), cereals (2239ng/kg) and meat (1799ng/kg). The estimated total daily dietary intake of PBDEs was 1671ng/day for adults and 952ng/day for children. The present study indicated that dust intake was the dominant PBDE exposure route for children, and the dietary intake was the dominant PBDE exposure route for adults. Our findings revealed high PBDE concentrations in dust and food samples collected at the center of e-waste recycling area, raising significant health concerns for residents in this particular region, especially for children.

Abstract:Laboratories at Zhejiang University of Technology in Hangzhou were selected to ascertain the pollution status of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in indoor city air. Air and dustfall samples were collected during 2015 and analysed using gas chromatography. This study provides important information on the typical indoor pollution of brominated flame retardants in urban areas in China, particularly in university laboratories. The annual geometric mean concentration of PBDEs of passive air samples in the university laboratories was 545.64pg/m3, corresponding to a medium level of air pollution. The highest level was recorded in winter and the lowest in summer. The average concentration of PBDEs in dustfall was 8198.69ng/g, generally higher than that reported in other studies. The annual geometric mean of deposition fluxes of PBDEs was 121.96ng/(m2d). BDE-209 was the main congener of PBDEs in all areas studied, and BDE-47, BDE-66, and BDE-99 also made a significant contribution to the total concentration of PBDEs·The detection rates were 100% for BDE-17, -28, and -66 in air samples, while the detection rates of BDE-17, -28, -71 and -66 were all 100% in dustfall samples. PBDE concentrations and deposition fluxes were unevenly distributed and showed sampling point differences, mainly attributed to differences in the materials used for indoor furnishings, the function of the room, the ventilation systems and the surrounding environment. Seasonal variations of PBDE concentrations in air samples ranged as winter>autumn>spring>summer, while seasonal variations in dustfall samples were winter>summer>autumn>spring. Two significant positive linear relationship were found between the total quantity of electronic equipment (r=0.722, p<0.05) and the quantity of plywood desktop (r=0.745, p<0.05) with the deposition fluxes of PBDEs.

Abstract:Much attention has been paid on polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in household dust due to their ubiquitous occurrences in the environment. Based on the data from 59 articles sampled from 2005 to 2020, we investigated the spatio-temporal distribution, sources, and health risk of 8 PBDE homologues in household dusts worldwide. BDE-209 is the predominant PBDE in household dusts, followed by BDE-99 and BDE-47. The total concentrations of PBDEs (∑ 8 PBDEs) are found to be high in household dusts sampled from 2005 to 2008 and show a significant decline trend from 2009 to 2016 ( p < 0.05) and a little upward tendency from 2017 to 2020. The concentrations of PBDEs in household dusts vary greatly in different countries of the world. The use of penta-BDE is the main source of three to five bromo-biphenyl ether monomers contributing 17.4% of ∑ 8 PBDEs, while BDE-209 and BDE-183 are derived from the use of household appliances contributing 82.6% of ∑ 8 PBDEs. Ingestion is the main exposure route for adults and toddlers, followed by dermal contact. The values of hazard index (HI) exposed to PBDEs in household dusts are all less than 1 for both adults and toddlers, indicating a low non-cancer risk. The incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRs) of BDE-209 are less than 10 −6 for both adults and toddlers, suggesting a negligible risk. However, the total carcinogenic risk of toddlers is higher than that of adults, indicating that much attention should be paid to toddlers exposed to BDE-209 in household dust.

Abstract:Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were investigated in indoor dusts from university dormitories and printing shops in Xinxiang, China. The mean concentrations of Sigma 13PBDEs were 105 +/- 64.2 ng/g dry weight (dw), 31.7 +/- 26.4 ng/g dw and 695 +/- 379 ng/g dw in dusts from male dormitory, female dormitory and printing shop, respectively. Notably, significantly higher PBDE concentrations were found in printing shop than in university dormitory. BDE-153 (84.5 +/- 165 ng/g dw), BDE-190 (76.1 +/- 179 ng/g dw) and BDE-138 (24.2 +/- 29.7 ng/g dw) displayed the highest levels in the 29 indoor dust samples. BDE-138,-153,-190 and-71 showed higher proportion in indoor dusts from university dormitories and printing shops. More debromination process of PBDEs occurred in dust from university dormitory, whereas PBDEs in printing shop were more likely to come directly from external electronic devices. Significantly positive correlations were revealed between the PBDE levels and the quantity of electronic equipment in dust, indicating that electronic devices had significant influence on PBDE contamination in indoor environment. Generally, PBDE concentrations in the present study were lower than the levels in indoor dusts from other studies worldwide. The estimated daily intake values of Sigma 13PBDEs displayed printing shop (80.4 ng/kg body weight (bw)/day) > male dormitory (11.3 ng/kg bw/day) > female dormitory (3.97 ng/kg bw/day), which were generally higher than other researches, but well below the EPA reference doses.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the pollution levels and influencing factors of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in household dust in five cities in northern China. Methods: Based on the "Chinese Indoor Environment and Health Surveillance" project carried out by the National Institute of Environmental Health, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2018-2019, during the warm season (April 2018 to September 2018) and the cold season (November 2018 to March 2019), Lanzhou in Northwest China, Shijiazhuang in North China, Panjin in Northeast China, Luoyang in Central China, and Qingdao in East China were selected as the research sites. A total of 87 families were recruited to study residences in real-life scenarios. At the same time, dust samples were collected to detect the concentration of PBDEs. The level of household environmental indicators was measured, and the residential building characteristics and family behavior habits were collected through questionnaires. A total of 142 valid dust samples and 140 valid questionnaires were obtained. The differences in PBDE concentrations across seasons, wind zones, residential building characteristics, and family habits were analyzed. The exploratory factor analysis was performed to investigate the possible sources of PBDEs, and multivariate linear regression was used to explore the factors influencing PBDEs in household dust. Results: The M (Q1, Q3) of total PBDE concentrations in 142 household dust samples in five cities was 144.51 (106.61, 222.65) ng/g in the warm season and 145.10 (98.57, 180.65) ng/g in the cold season, respectively. There were seasonal differences in the concentration of ∑12PBDEs in Luoyang and Shijiazhuang (P<0.01). The concentration of BDE-71 was highest among PBDE homologues, followed by BDE-66 and BDE-47. Three factors were extracted by exploratory factor analysis in the warm season, and the cumulative variance contribution rate was 67.90%. The multivariate linear regression showed that the house completion less than ten years [β (95%CI): 0.186 (0.013, 0.359)], infrequent home cooking [β (95%CI):-0.342 (-0.570, -0.114)], and increased residential PM10 concentration [β (95%CI): 0.001 (0.000, 0.002)] during the warm season, as well as the house far from driveway [β (95%CI): 0.093 (0.013, 0.172)], house area less than 90 m2 [β (95%CI):-0.138 (-0.264, -0.013)], and lower residential xylene concentration [β (95%CI):-0.006 (-0.011, -0.001)] during the cold season might be related to the elevated concentrations of ∑12PBDEs in household dust. Conclusion: The pollution of PBDEs in household dust in five northern cities is at a medium to high level. Years of house completion, frequency of cooking at home, residential PM10 concentration, distance from house to driveway, house area, and residential xylene concentration may influence household PBDE concentrations.

Abstract:Abstract—The aim of this paper is to present a parametric study to determine the major factors that influence the calculations of current rating for both air and underground cables. The current carrying capability of the power cables rely largely on the installation conditions and material properties. In this work, the influences on ampacity of conductor size, soil thermal resistivity and ambient soil temperature for underground installations are shown. The influences on the current-carrying capacity of solar heating (time of day effects and intensity of solar radiation), ambient air temperature and cable size for cables air are also presented. IEC and IEEE standards are taken as reference.

Abstract:To evaluate risk via inhalation exposure of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in office environment, thirty-six pairs air samples including PM2.5 (particles with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm), PM10 (particles with aerodynamic diameter less than 10 μm), total suspended particles (TSP) with matching gas phase were collected in office environment in Shanghai, China. The average concentrations of PM2.5, PM10 and TSP were 20.4, 27.2 and 50.3 μg/m3, respectively. Σ15PBDEs mean concentrations in PM2.5, PM10, TSP and gas phase were 51.8, 110.7, 148 and 59.6 pg/m3, respectively. Much more PBDEs distributed in fine fractions than coarse ones. PBDEs congener profiles found in PM2.5, PM10 and TSP (dominated by BDE-209) were different from that in gas phase (dominated by the tri- to penta-BDEs). Approximately 3.20 pg/kg/d PM2.5 bound PBDEs can be inhaled into the lung; 3.62 pg/kg/d PM10-PM2.5(particles with aerodynamic diameter of 2.5-10 μm) bound PBDEs tended to be deposited in the upper part of respiratory system, and the intake of PBDEs via gas-phase was 2.74 pg/kg/d. The exposure of PBDEs was far below the minimal risk levels (MRLs), indicating lower risk from PBDEs via inhalation in the studied office in Shanghai.

Abstract:Herein, we studied the occurrence and profiles of thirteen PBDE congeners in 30 river sediment samples from Shanghai, China. The concentrations of Σ13PBDEs ranged from 110 to 13,071 pg g−1 dw, with an average value of 2,841 pg g−1 dw. BDE-209 was the predominant congener accounting for more than 65 % of total PBDEs, demonstrating that the major source of PBDEs in sediment samples was associated with the prevalent use of technical deca-BDE products. Moreover, low brominated BDEs in sediments also came from the degradation of higher brominated BDEs. In addition, taking into consideration of dietary exposure, PBDEs in serum samples collected from the locals were also detected with range of 419–26,744 pg g−1 (average 5,561 pg g−1), which suggested a relatively low burden of PBDEs contamination to human body compared with the condition in other place. And in serum, low brominated compounds constituted the majority of total PBDE congeners.

Abstract:Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are becoming a public health concern because of their potential toxicity, from endocrine disruption system to neurodevelopmental impairments. Nonetheless, information on their levels in human blood is scarce. In this study, human serum samples collected in Shanghai, China, were analyzed for the concentrations of PBDEs and their hydroxylated metabolites (OH-PBDEs). Eight PBDE congeners and six OH-PBDE congeners were quantified in serum samples by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). As a result, total PBDE concentration ranged from 0.280 to 12.330 ng g−1 on a lipid weight basis lw (median: 1.100 ng g−1 lw) and the total OH-PBDE level ranged from 0.045 to 0.363 ng g−1 (lw) (median: 0.187 ng g−1 lw). Among them, BDE-47 and 6-OH-BDE-47 were the predominant PBDEs and OH-PBDEs, respectively. In addition, based on the results of the Bartelett X2 test, BDE-47 significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with BDE-28, BDE-100, BDE-85, and BDE-154, whereas 3′-OH-BDE-7 significantly (p < 0.01) correlated with 3-OH-BDE-47, 2-OH-BDE-68, and 6′-OH-BDE-99. Among all donors, no significant association between age and PBDEs (or OH-PBDEs) was found. Further research on the exposure routes in the environment and metabolic processing of PBDEs in human blood is necessary.

Abstract:In Part I of this study,* a mixture of two Poisson distributions was examined as a model of specialty word distribution. Formulas expressing the three parameters of the model in terms of empirical frequency statistics were derived, and a statistical measure intended to identify specialty words, consistent with the model, was proposed. In the present paper, Part II of the study, a probabilistic model of keyword indexing is outlined, and some of the consequences of the model are examined. An algorithm defining a measure of indexability is developed-a measure intended to reflect the relative significance of words in documents. The measure is evaluated and is found to consistently produce indexes superior to those produced by another measure which had previously been identified in the literature as producing the best results.
