Abstract:As is well known, beside the compositions, the sizes and morphologies also play a key role in determining the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials. So, the tunning of the sizes and morphologies of nanomaterials can not only lead to the discovery of new structures, but also bring new research paradigms to the scientific communities. Particularly, when the sizes of nanomaterials are reduced to several nanometer or even sub-nanometer level, more novel properties will appear. Being one kind of recently developed functional nanomaterials, ultrathin semiconductor nanowires and nanorods (i.e., USNWs & USNRs) typically refer to the one-dimensional (1D) semiconductor nanostructures with a diameter less than 5 nm and even 3 nm. Compared with their traditional nanowire and nanorod counterparts (>5 nm in diameter), USNWs and USNRs are known for their remarkable quantum confinement effects, remarkable interfacial effects, and attractive novel physical (such as "cluster-like" sharp absorption, ultranarrow band fluorescence emission, etc.) and chemical properties (higher reactivity, etc.) due to their close-to-atomic diameters and high structural anisotropy. It is thus believed that they hold great promise for application in the fields of optoelectronic devices (e.g., light-emitting diodes, solar cells and lasers), nanoscale electronic devices (e.g., nanoscale circuits and chips), sensors (e.g., gas sensors and photodetectors) and so on. As a result, the fundamental and applied studies of USNWs & USNRs are rather important and challengeable, which have drawn attentions in nanomaterial field over the past two decades. In view of their uniqueness, importance and limitations, we have systemically summarized the recent progress in the fundamental research and the functional applications of ultrathin semiconductor nanowires and nanorods in this review. To be more specific, we have particularly emphasized therein on their representative synthesis methods, fascinating optical absorption and emission, novel electronic, magnetic and polymer-like properties as well as their practical applications in the fields of opticalelectrical conversion, photodetection, photocatalysis, photothermal conversion and gas sensing. In particular, to make this review more constructive and helpful, we have also summarized and analyzed the underlying physical laws that govern the growth processes (such as ligand control, oriented assembly, soft template restraint, etc.) or the unique optical and electronic properties (such as quantum confinement effect, interface effect and so on) of ultrathin semiconductor nanowires & nanorods. More importantly, we have not only pointed out the current major challenges in the synthesis, characterization and application of USNWs & USNRs, but also afforded some promising solutions to solve such challenges. In general, the research and application of ultra-thin quantum wires/rods are still in their infancy, and there still remain many pending challenges, especially in the universal and controllable synthesis, fluorescent property modulation and improvement, structural stability enhancement and highly-ordered assembly. Apparently, to solve the above challenges, it is imperative to make breakthroughs in the synthesis and modification protocols, in-situ optical and structural characterization means, deep understanding of the key structure activity relationship and precise assembly techniques. With such progresses, the wide practical application of USNWs & USNRs can be anticipated in consideration of their unique structural and functional advantages. We hope that the systemic summaries and deep discussions presented in this review can promote the overall research and application progress of USNWs & USNRs.
