Abstract:The crosscap number of a knot in the 3-sphere is the minimal genus of non-orientable surfaces bounded by the knot. We determine the crosscap numbers of torus knots. Also, we show that a minimal genus non-orientable surface bounded by a non-trivial torus knot is unique.

Abstract:The nonorientable four-ball genus of a knot $K$ in $S^3$ is the minimal first Betti number of nonorientable surfaces in $B^4$ bounded by $K$. By amalgamating ideas from involutive knot Floer homology and unoriented knot Floer homology, we give a new lower bound on the smooth nonorientable four-ball genus $\gamma_4$ of any knot. This bound is sharp for several families of torus knots, including $T_{4n,(2n\pm 1)^2}$ for even $n\ge 2$, a family Longo showed were counterexamples to Batson's conjecture. We also prove that, whenever $p$ is an even positive integer and $\frac{p}{2}$ is not a perfect square, the torus knot $T_{p,q}$ does not bound a locally flat Möbius band for almost all integers $q$ relatively prime to $p$.

Abstract:The non-orientable 4-genus of a knot $K$ in $S^{3}$, denoted $\gamma_4(K)$, measures the minimum genus of a non-orientable surface in $B^{4}$ bounded by $K$. We compute bounds for the non-orientable 4-genus of knots $T_{5, q}$ and $T_{6, q}$, extending previous research. Additionally, we provide a generalized, non-recursive formula for $d(S^{3}_{-1}(T_{p,q}))$, the $d$-invariant of -1-surgery on torus knots.

The Number of Closed Essential Surfaces in Montesinos Knots with Four Rational Tangles

Abstract:In the complement of a hyperbolic Montesinos knot with 4 rational tangles, we investigate the number of closed, connected, essential, orientable surfaces of a fixed genus $g$, up to isotopy. We show that there are exactly 12 genus 2 surfaces and $8\phi(g - 1)$ surfaces of genus greater than 2, where $\phi(g - 1)$ is the Euler totient function of $g - 1$. Observe that this count is independent of the number of crossings of the knot. Moreover, this class of knots form an infinite class of hyperbolic 3-manifolds and the result applies to all such knot complements.

Abstract:The non-orientable 4-genus of a knot K in the three sphere is defined to be the minimum first Betti number of a non-orientable surface F in the four-ball so that K bounds F. We will survey the tools used to compute the non-orientable 4-genus, and use various techniques to calculate this invariant for non-alternating 11 crossing knots. We also will view obstructions to a knot bounding a Möbius band given by the double branched cover of the three sphere branched over K.

Abstract:Ito-Takimura recently defined a splice-unknotting number $u^-(D)$ for knot diagrams. They proved that this number provides an upper bound for the crosscap number of any prime knot, asking whether equality holds in the alternating case. We answer their question in the affirmative. (Ito has independently proven the same result.) As an application, we compute the crosscap numbers of all prime alternating knots through at least 13 crossings, using Gauss codes.

Abstract:We consider the relationship between the crosscap number γ of knots and a partial order on the set of all prime knots, which is defined as follows. For two knots K and J , we say K≥J if there exists an epimorphism f:π1(S3−K)→π1(S3−J) . We prove that if K and J are 2-bridge knots and K>J , then γ(K)≥3γ(J)−4 . We also classify all pairs (K,J) for which the inequality is sharp. A similar result relating the genera of two knots has been proven by Suzuki and Tran. Namely, if K and J are 2-bridge knots and K>J , then g(K)≥3g(J)−1 , where g(K) denotes the genus of the knot K .

Abstract:An $n$-crossing is a point in the projection of a knot where $n$ strands cross so that each strand bisects the crossing. An übercrossing projection has a single $n$-crossing and a petal projection has a single $n$-crossing such that there are no loops nested within others. The übercrossing number, $\text{ü}(K)$, is the smallest $n$ for which we can represent a knot $K$ with a single $n$-crossing. The petal number is the number of loops in the minimal petal projection. In this paper, we relate the übercrossing number and petal number to well-known invariants such as crossing number, bridge number, and unknotting number. We find that the bounds we have constructed are tight for $(r, r+1)$-torus knots. We also explore the behavior of übercrossing number under composition.

Abstract:Suppose an orientation-preserving action of a finite group G on the closed surface $\Sigma _g$ of genus $g>1$ extends over the 3-torus $T^3$ for some embedding $\Sigma _g\subset T^3$. Then $|G|\le 12(g-1)$, and this upper bound $12(g-1)$ can be achieved for $g=n^2+1, 3n^2+1, 2n^3+1, 4n^3+1, 8n^3+1, n\in {\mathbb {Z}}_+$. The surfaces in $T^3$ realizing a maximal symmetry can be either unknotted or knotted. Similar problems in the non-orientable category are also discussed. The connection with minimal surfaces in $T^3$ is addressed and the situation when the maximally symmetric surfaces above can be realized by minimal surfaces is identified.

Abstract:It is conjectured that a hyperbolic knot admits at most three Dehn surgeries which yield closed three manifolds containing incompressible tori. We show that there exist infinitely many hyperbolic knots which attain the conjectural maximum number. Interestingly, those surgeries correspond to consecutive integers.

Abstract:This paper continues a program due to Motegi regarding universal bounds for the number of non-isotopic essential $n$-punctured tori in the complement of a hyperbolic knot in $S^3$. For $n=1$, Valdez-Sánchez showed that there are at most five non-isotopic Seifert tori in the exterior of a hyperbolic knot. In this paper, we address the case $n=2$. We show that there are at most six non-isotopic, nested, essential 2-holed tori in the complement of every hyperbolic knot.

Unknotting Nonorientable Surfaces of Genus 4 and 5

Abstract:Expanding on work by Conway, Orson, and Powell, we study the isotopy classes rel. boundary of nonorientable, compact, locally flatly embedded surfaces in $D^4$ with knot group $\mathbb{Z}_2$. In particular we show that if two such surfaces have fixed knot boundary $K$ in $S^4$ such that $\vert \det(K) \vert =1$, the same normal Euler number, and the same nonorientable genus $4$ or $5$, then they are ambiently isotopic rel. boundary. This implies that closed, nonorientable, locally flatly embedded surfaces in the $4$-sphere with knot group $\mathbb{Z}_2$ of nonorientable genus $4$ and $5$ are topologically unknotted. The proof relies on calculations, implemented in Sage, which imply that the modified surgery obstruction is elementary. Furthermore we show that this method fails for nonorientable genus $6$ and $7$.

Abstract:A petal diagram of a knot is a projection with a single multi-crossing such that there are no nested loops. The petal number [Formula: see text] of a knot [Formula: see text] is the minimum number of loops among all petal diagrams of [Formula: see text]. Let [Formula: see text] denote the [Formula: see text]-torus knot for relatively prime integers [Formula: see text]. Recently, Kim et al. proved that [Formula: see text] whenever [Formula: see text]. They conjectured that the inequality holds without the assumption [Formula: see text]. They also showed that [Formula: see text] whenever [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. Their proofs construct petal grid diagrams for those torus knots. In this paper, we prove the conjecture that [Formula: see text] holds for any [Formula: see text]. We also show that [Formula: see text] holds for any [Formula: see text]. Our proofs construct petal grid diagrams for any torus knots.

Slice genus, $T$-genus and $4$-dimensional clasp number

Abstract:The $T$-genus of a knot is the minimal number of borromean-type triple points on a normal singular disk with no clasp bounded by the knot; it is an upper bound for the slice genus. Kawauchi, Shibuya and Suzuki characterized the slice knots by the vanishing of their $T$-genus. We generalize this to provide a $3$-dimensional characterization of the slice genus. Further, we prove that the $T$-genus majors the $4$-dimensional positive clasp number and we deduce that the difference between the $T$-genus and the slice genus can be arbitrarily large. We introduce the ribbon counterpart of the $T$-genus and prove that it is an upper bound for the ribbon genus. Interpreting the $T$-genera in terms of $\Delta$-distance, we show that the $T$-genus and the ribbon $T$-genus coincide for all knots if and only if all slice knots are ribbon. We work in the more general setting of algebraically split links and we also discuss the case of colored links. Finally, we express Milnor's triple linking number of an algebraically split $3$-component link as the algebraic intersection number of three immersed disks bounded by the three components.

Abstract:We determine the locally flat cobordism distance between torus knots with small and large braid index, up to high precision. Here small means 2, 3, 4, or 6. As an application, we derive a surprising fact about torus knots that are met along the way of almost minimal cobordisms between two-stranded torus knots and the trivial knot.

Abstract:Knot filtered embedded contact homology was first introduced by Hutchings in 2015; it has been computed for the standard transverse unknot in irrational ellipsoids by Hutchings and for the Hopf link in lens spaces L(n,n-1) via a quotient by Weiler. While toric constructions can be used to understand the ECH chain complexes of many contact forms adapted to open books with binding the unknot and Hopf link, they do not readily adapt to general torus knots and links. In this paper, we generalize the definition and invariance of knot filtered embedded contact homology to allow for degenerate knots with rational rotation numbers. We then develop new methods for understanding the embedded contact homology chain complex of positive torus knotted fibrations of the standard tight contact 3-sphere in terms of their presentation as open books and as Seifert fibered spaces. We provide Morse-Bott methods, using a doubly filtered complex and the energy filtered perturbed Seiberg-Witten theory developed by Hutchings and Taubes, and use them to compute the T(2,q) knot filtered embedded contact homology, for q odd and positive. In the sequel we complete the computation for positive T(p,q) knots (where there is a nonvanishing differential) and use our results to deduce quantitative existence results for torus knotted Reeb dynamics on the tight 3-sphere and the mean action of area preserving diffeomorphisms of once punctured surfaces of arbitrary genus arising as Seifert surfaces of positive torus knots.

Abstract:Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, Volume 33, Issue 01, January 2024. We study the structure of the augmented fundamental quandle of a knot whose complement contains an incompressible torus. We obtain the relationship between the fundamental quandle of a satellite knot and the fundamental quandles/groups of its companion and pattern knots. General presentations of the fundamental quandles of a link in a solid torus, a link in a lens space and a satellite knot are described. In the last part of this paper, an algebraic approach to the study of affine quandles is presented and some known results about the Alexander module and quandle colorings are obtained.

Classifying the surface-knot modules

Abstract:The $k$th module of a surface-knot of a genus $g$ in the 4-sphere is the $k$th integral homology module of the infinite cyclic covering of the surface-knot complement. The reduced first module is the quotient module of the first module by the finite sub-module defining the torsion linking. It is shown that the reduced first module for every genus $g$ is characterized in terms of properties of a finitely generated module. As a by-product, a concrete example of the fundamental group of a surface-knot of genus $g$ which is not the fundamental group of any surface-knot of genus $g-1$ is given for every $g>0$. The torsion part and the torsion-free part of the second module are determined by the reduced first module and the genus-class on the reduced first module. The third module vanishes. The concept of an exact leaf of a surface-knot is introduced, whose linking is an orthogonal sum of the torsion linking and a hyperbolic linking.
