Abstract:We prove that each overtwisted contact structure has knot types that are represented by infinitely many distinct transverse knots all with the same self-linking number. In some cases, we can even classify all such knots. We also show similar results for Legendrian knots and prove a "folk" result concerning loose transverse and Legendrian knots (that is knots with overtwisted complements) which says that such knots are determined by their classical invariants (up to contactomorphism). Finally we discuss how these results partially fill in our understanding of the "geography" and "botany"' problems for Legendrian knots in overtwisted contact structures, as well as many open questions regarding these problems.

Abstract:We present examples of Legendrian knots in $\mathbb{R}^3$ that have linearized Legendrian contact homology over $\mathbb{Z}$ containing torsion. As a consequence, we show that there exist augmentations of Legendrian knots over $\mathbb{Z}$ that are not induced by exact Lagrangian fillings, even though their mod $2$ reductions are.

The proof requires a result of Dymara on loose Legendrian knots and Eliashberg's classification of overtwisted contact structures on 3-manifolds.

Abstract:For a smooth manifold $N$ denote by $E^m(N)$ the set of smooth isotopy classes of smooth embeddings $N\to\mathbb R^m$. A description of the set $E^m(S^p\times S^q)$ was known only for $p=q=0$ or for $p=0$, $m\ne q+2$ or for $2m\ge 2(p+q)+\max\{p,q\}+4$. (The description was given in terms of homotopy groups of spheres and of Stiefel manifolds.) For $m\ge2p+q+3$ we introduce an abelian group structure on $E^m(S^p\times S^q)$ and describe this group `up to an extension problem'. This result has corollaries which, under stronger dimension restrictions, more explicitly describe $E^m(S^p\times S^q)$. The proof is based on relations between sets $E^m(N)$ for different $N$ and $m$, in particular, on a recent exact sequence of M. Skopenkov.

Abstract:In this paper we will show how to classify Legendrian and transverse knots in the knot type of “sufficiently positive” cables of a knot in terms of the classification of the underlying knot. We will also completely explain the phenomena of “Legendrian large” cables. These are Legendrian representatives of cables that have Thurston–Bennequin invariant larger than the framing coming from the cabling torus. Such examples have only recently, and unexpectedly, been found. We will also give criteria that determines the classification of Legendrian and transverse knots the knot type of negative cables.

Classification of small links in the unmarked solid torus

Abstract:We introduce a framework to analyze knots and links in an unmarked solid torus. We discuss invariants that detect when such links are equivalent under an ambient homeomorphism, and show that the multivariable Alexander polynomial is such in invariant. We compute, for links with low wrapping number, bounds on the degree of a Dehn twist needed to transform one into the other that depend on the dichromatic Kauffman polynomial. Finally, we use this to give a classification of all non-split links up to 6 crossings in the unmarked solid torus.

Abstract:We classify Legendrian unknots in overtwisted contact structures on $S^3$. In particular, we show that up to contact isotopy for every pair $(n,\pm(n-1))$ with $n>0$ there are exactly two oriented non-loose Legendrian unknots in $S^3$ with Thurston-Bennequin invariant $n$ and rotation number $\pm(n-1)$. (Only one overtwisted contact structure on $S^3$ admits a non-loose unknot $K$ and the classical invariants have to be $\mathrm{tb}(K)=n$ and $\mathrm{rot}(K)=\pm(n-1)$ for $n>1$.) This can be used to prove two results attributed to Y.~Che\-kan\-ov: The first implies that the contact mapping class group of an overtwisted contact structure on $S^3$ depends on the contact structure. The second result is that the identity component of the contactomorphism group of an overtwisted contact structure on $S^3$ does not always act transitively on the set of boundaries of overtwisted discs.
Totally tangential $\mathbb{C}$-links and electromagnetic knots

Abstract:The set of real-analytic Legendrian links with respect to the standard contact structure on the 3-sphere $S^3$ corresponds both to the set of totally tangential $\mathbb{C}$-links as defined by Rudolph and to the set of stable knotted field lines in Bateman electromagnetic fields of Hopf type. It is known that every isotopy class has a real-analytic Legendrian representative, so that every link type $L$ admits a holomorphic function $G:\mathbb{C}^2\to\mathbb{C}$ whose zeros intersect $S^3$ tangentially in $L$ and there is a Bateman electromagnetic field $\mathbf{F}$ with closed field lines in the shape of $L$. However, so far the family of torus links are the only examples where explicit expressions of $G$ and $\mathbf{F}$ have been found. In this paper, we present an algorithm that finds for every given link type $L$ a real-analytic Legendrian representative, parametrised in terms of trigonometric polynomials. We then prove that (good candidates for) examples of $G$ and $\mathbf{F}$ can be obtained by solving a system of linear equations, which is homogeneous in the case of $G$ and inhomogeneous in the case of $\mathbf{F}$. We also use the real-analytic Legendrian parametrisations to study the dynamics of knots in Bateman electromagnetic fields of Hopf type. In particular, we show that no compact subset of $\mathbb{R}^3$ can contain an electromagnetic knot indefinitely.

On the nonorientable four-ball genus of torus knots

Abstract:The nonorientable four-ball genus of a knot $K$ in $S^3$ is the minimal first Betti number of nonorientable surfaces in $B^4$ bounded by $K$. By amalgamating ideas from involutive knot Floer homology and unoriented knot Floer homology, we give a new lower bound on the smooth nonorientable four-ball genus $\gamma_4$ of any knot. This bound is sharp for several families of torus knots, including $T_{4n,(2n\pm 1)^2}$ for even $n\ge 2$, a family Longo showed were counterexamples to Batson's conjecture. We also prove that, whenever $p$ is an even positive integer and $\frac{p}{2}$ is not a perfect square, the torus knot $T_{p,q}$ does not bound a locally flat Möbius band for almost all integers $q$ relatively prime to $p$.

Non-isotopic transverse tori in Engel manifolds

Abstract:In every Engel manifold we construct an infinite family of pairwise non-isotopic transverse tori that are all smoothly isotopic. To distinguish the transverse tori in the family we introduce a homological invariant of transverse tori that is similar to the self-linking number for transverse knots in contact 3-manifolds. Analogous results are presented for Legendrian tori in even contact 4-manifolds.

We use basic properties of knot groups to prove that knot contact homology detects every torus knot. Abstract:We show that in $(S^3,\xi_{std})$ if $K$ is a non-trivial knot that realizes the three-dimensional Thurston-Bennequin bound (i.e. $K$ has a Legendrian representative $\Lambda$ with $tb(\Lambda)-rot(\Lambda)=2g(K)-1$), then $K$ has a Legendrian representative $L$ with $tb=0$. Moreover, this result can be easily generalized to contact manifolds that uniquely represent the associated contact invariants. This is the first result on Legendrian representatives of non-fibered knots in $3-$manifolds other than $S^3$. We also show that if $K$ is a nearly fibered knot in $S^3$ then $\tau(K)=g(K)$ implies that $K$ realizes the three-dimensional Thurston-Bennequin bound.

Abstract:Knot filtered embedded contact homology was first introduced by Hutchings in 2015; it has been computed for the standard transverse unknot in irrational ellipsoids by Hutchings and for the Hopf link in lens spaces L(n,n-1) via a quotient by Weiler. While toric constructions can be used to understand the ECH chain complexes of many contact forms adapted to open books with binding the unknot and Hopf link, they do not readily adapt to general torus knots and links. In this paper, we generalize the definition and invariance of knot filtered embedded contact homology to allow for degenerate knots with rational rotation numbers. We then develop new methods for understanding the embedded contact homology chain complex of positive torus knotted fibrations of the standard tight contact 3-sphere in terms of their presentation as open books and as Seifert fibered spaces. We provide Morse-Bott methods, using a doubly filtered complex and the energy filtered perturbed Seiberg-Witten theory developed by Hutchings and Taubes, and use them to compute the T(2,q) knot filtered embedded contact homology, for q odd and positive. In the sequel we complete the computation for positive T(p,q) knots (where there is a nonvanishing differential) and use our results to deduce quantitative existence results for torus knotted Reeb dynamics on the tight 3-sphere and the mean action of area preserving diffeomorphisms of once punctured surfaces of arbitrary genus arising as Seifert surfaces of positive torus knots.

Abstract:In the search for transverse-universal knots in the standard contact structure of $\mathbb{S}^3$, we present a classification of the transverse twist knots with maximal self-linking number, that admit only overtwisted contact branched covers. As a direct consequence, we obtain an infinite family of transverse knots in $(\mathbb{S}^3,\xi_{std})$ that are not transverse-universal, although they are universal in the topological sense.

Abstract:We show that there exists an infinite family of pairwise non-isotopic Legendrian knots in the standard contact 3-sphere whose Stein traces are equivalent. This is the first example of such phenomenon. Different constructions are developed in the article, including a contact annulus twist, explicit Weinstein handlebody equivalences, and a discussion on dualizable patterns in the contact setting. These constructions can be used to systematically construct distinct Legendrian knots in the standard contact 3-sphere with contactomorphic (-1)-surgeries and, in many cases, equivalent Stein traces. In addition, we also discuss characterizing slopes and provide results in the opposite direction, i.e. describe cases in which the Stein trace, or the contactomorphism type of an r-surgery, uniquely determines the Legendrian isotopy type.
