Abstract:"Learning by doing" involves completing a practice activity through the method of inquiry. This study combined the predict-observe-explain (POE) inquiry method and hands-on doing processes to develop a cycle-mode POED (predict-observe-explain-do) model with an e-learning system to help students complete a practice activity using scientific inquiry. The study selected 60 sixth-grade students, who were divided into the experimental group (cycle-mode POED model) and the control group (lectures and PowerPoint slides). The students learned how to use hands-on tools to make a "Voltaic Battery Car" and complete the "Car Climbing the Ramp" task with the interdisciplinary knowledge that they had gained. The experiment was conducted over a period of 18 classes for a total duration of 720 min. The results showed that both groups of students improved their learning motivation, learning performance, and hands-on ability. Moreover, the student with lower prior knowledge were able to learn how to complete the activity using the cycle-mode POED model and scientific inquiry. This study developed the cycle-mode POED model to assist students in connecting their scientific conceptual knowledge with practical hands-on doing processes. The research contribution is a pedagogy manuscript for instructors who want to teach scientific inquiry to complete a practice activity.

The system has been used in two iterative studies to evaluate different design concepts related to cycling and social interaction. We introduce the build and implementation of the simulation system and discuss the role of an experimental prototype in design research.
Design and implementation of an instrumented pedal for cycling biomechanics research

Abstract:Cycling is a common, low-impact activity used for recreation, exercise, and rehabilitation. Knee joint loading can be predicted using inverse dynamic analyses of pedal load cell and kinematic data measured during cycling biomechanics experiments. Several studies have successfully measured foot loading at the pedals, e.g. by using custom instrumented pedal spindles outfitted with strain gauges and a potentiometer to measure crank angle [1-3]. Such designs are relatively complex, requiring difficult machining and component fabrication, and require post-processing of strain gauge data. The long-term goal of this study is to calculate knee joint loading and, ultimately, cartilage tissue stress to provide evidence-based prescriptions for rehabilitative and fitness sustainment exercises for those who are at high risk for knee osteoarthritis. The objective of this project was to design, fabricate, and implement an instrumented pedal system using existing load cells for use in cycling biomechanics research. Measured data retrieved from the load cells during cycling experiments will be compared to similar studies to verify that this project was successful.

Development of a Design Education Platform for an Interdisciplinary Teaching Concept

Abstract:Teams of engineering students take part in a problem-based learning course, where they develop physical product variants of a robotic system and take part in a competition. Design theory and methodology are part of the teaching concept, including complexity management by platform strategy and modularization. Skills in mechanical engineering, design, numerical optimization, additive manufacturing and use of CAD, PDM and FEM software are improved. The developed robotic systems are divided into different modules, these modules are attached on the Design Education Platform. This paper shows the in-house development of this platform with regard to the requirements from the design education course and technical specifications. In this context, findings from an earlier developed product family architecture of a robotic system as reference are integrated. The product architecture is shown in a module interface graph, displaying the component variety as well as their linkages. A description of the used mechanical and electrical components and their computational as well as communication possibilities is shown. The problem-based learning course and its interdisciplinary teaching concept are presented. First findings are formulated and the resulting products of student teams of summer semester 2019 are shown. These first product variants are the starting point of a product family, with new modules and resulting product variants each semester. The influence of the Design Education Platform on the course is evaluated, with the focus on decreasing the internal work for the lecturers, while student numbers are growing. The outlook shows further possibilities of tasks to fulfill and the use of the system as a cyber-physical system for future product generations.
The Missing Link: Co-Creation Through Design Engineering Projects

Abstract:The Design Project units are the cornerstone of academic and professional development within the undergraduate Design Engineering programme at Bournemouth University. They provide technical, conceptual and theoretical challenges to be resolved through the integration of taught elements and self-directed learning to yield tangible outcomes. Final year students supplement their project through the Advanced Technology and Innovation unit. Here they work in conjunction with the research centres to develop understanding of a specialised discipline and write a research paper. However, students have limited time to develop before formulating a methodology while access to research facilities is limited and the learning curve for research equipment can be time consuming.To address these issues, 2nd year students were asked to design a fatigue testing machine for use within the Sustainable Design Research Centre as a design project. Designing such a device provided students with a sound understanding of fracture mechanics at the beginning of the project, operation capability of test equipment, test methodologies and systems control; essentially they developed the prerequisite knowledge to engage in their 4th year research. Funding was secured from the University's fusion investment fund (co-creation strand) to provide flexible adaptable elements and construct a pair of exemplar fatigue testing machines reflecting those developed by the students. The familiarity through the inbuilt adaptability of mechanism, control and data acquisition systems allows for a rapid understanding of their operation and capability hence short learning curve with equipment prioritised for undergraduate research.

Abstract:There has been much UbiComp research into motivating people to live more active and healthy lifestyle with sports. The idea behind these approaches is centered on social and peer effects in enhancing exercise adherence. While research of this kind has been prolific, there has very little work been done to identify factors that embody comfortable and informed accompanied exercise experience. This paper takes an increasingly attractive cycling theme as a testbed and proposes an unobtrusive and intuitive interface arrangement based on light. It can create a sense of being together with each other for distant apart cyclists. The initial results yield a good level of comprehension and motivation towards the use of the interface. The hope is that the elicited recommendations can guide the design of UbiComp technologies for social motivational physical exercises.

Abstract:Bicycle manufacturing is an industry that has taken advantage of technological developments in materials and large-scale manufacturing for high-performance products. Higher-specification bicycles typically use fibre-reinforced composite frames that are optimised for structural performance and mass. Efforts have also been made to increase the comfort of a rider by increasing the vertical compliance of frames, but traditional fibre-reinforced composite moulding techniques restrict manufacturing flexibility in fitting frame geometry to match the requirements of an individual. Manufacturers typically subdivide their frames into sized-based grouping to reduce manufacturing, inventory and supply costs. For specific user fits, customised bicycles are produced, but only on a smaller scale. These improve comfort via improved geometric fit for the user, but typically do so at high cost, or by using sub-optimum material selections. In this paper, an innovative, segmented frame design concept is introduced to facilitate a design-for-ergonomics and mass-customisation approach in the high-volume, high-performance bicycle industry.

Abstract:Abstract. With the resurgence in bicycle ridership in the last decade and the continuous increase of electric bicycles in the streets a better understanding of bicycle rider behaviour is imperative to improve bicycle safety. Unfortunately, these studies are dangerous for the rider, given that the bicycle is a laterally unstable vehicle and most of the time in need for rider balance control. Moreover, the bicycle rider is very vulnerable and not easily protected against impact injuries. A bicycle simulator, on which the rider can balance and manoeuvre a bicycle within a simulated environment and interact with other simulated road users, would solve most of these issues. In this paper, we present a description of a recently build bicycle simulator at TU Delft, were mechanical and mechatronics aspects are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Design is a crucial component of enterprise innovation. Due to rapid changes in society, the economy, and science and technology, design problems are becoming increasingly complex, making it necessary to integrate professional knowledge and technology of different domains into design education. Hence, the primary purpose of this study was to investigate learning problems in design-based interdisciplinary education, examine the learning resources used by students to overcome learning problems, and identify the causes of those problems. In this study, 24 students participating in design-based interdisciplinary courses/activities engaged in focus group discussions. The data were transcribed, and we used Atlas.ti qualitative analysis software to conduct open coding and clustering according to grounded theory and to construct a model of interdisciplinary learning problems. This paper provides new insights into the learning process for multidisciplinary design. Moreover, it offers a reference to enable design teachers to plan interdisciplinary design courses and students to participate in interdisciplinary learning, thus improving teaching effectiveness in interdisciplinary design education and establishing a foundation for future related research.

Abstract:A new theory and method of innovative product evolutionary design based on semantics unit was presented.The new theory and method was discussed with evolutionary principles of design concepts and process in integrated platform from viewpoint of innovation and reuse properties for creative product.Key technologies,such as product motion evolutionary design,assembly evolutionary design,structure evolutionary design and reuse evolutionary design,were researched in particular.Furthermore,the new method has been successfully applied in the modeling of some projects and has achieved positive responses in its utility,flexibility and robustness.Experiment results indicated that this method could help designers express product design information more naturally and accurately from high-level semantics layer,and it has realized the support for computer-aided innovative design.

Abstract:Under the auspices of the MIT D-Lab, a team of graduate students has instructed a course since 2008 that centers around teaching low-cost prosthetic design for resource-constrained environments. Recently, the course has evolved into a fully immersive design experience that pairs student teams with real-life international stakeholders and industry partners. Following this structure, projects initiated as part of the course have been tested at field sites around the world, stimulated further research, advanced student careers, raised additional grant money, and generated peer-reviewed publications and intellectual property.

Abstract:Reform documents advocate for innovative pedagogical strategies to enhance student learning. A key innovation is the integration of science and engineering practices through Engineering Design (ED)-based physics laboratory tasks, where students tackle engineering design problems by applying physics principles. While this approach has its benefits, research shows that students do not always effectively apply scientific concepts, but instead rely on trial-and-error approaches, and end up gadgeteering their way to a solution. This leads to what is commonly referred to as the "design-science gap" -- that students do not always consciously apply science concepts while solving a design problem. However, as obvious as the notion of a `gap' may appear, there seems to exist no consensus on the definitions of `design' and `science', further complicating the understanding of this `gap'. This qualitative study addresses the notion of the design-science gap by examining student-groups' discussions and written lab reports from a multi-week ED-based undergraduate introductory physics laboratory task. Building on our earlier studies, we developed and employed a nuanced, multi-layered coding scheme inspired by the Gioia Framework to characterize `design thinking' and `science thinking'. We discuss how student-groups engage in various aspects of design and how they apply concepts physics principles to solve the problem. In the process, we demonstrate the interconnectedness of students' design thinking and science thinking. We advocate for the usage of the term ``design--science connection'' as opposed to ``design--science gap'' to deepen both design and scientific thinking. Our findings offer valuable insights for educators in design-based science education.

Getting Fit in a Sustainable Way: Design and Optimization of a Low-Cost Regenerative Exercise Bicycle

Abstract:With the increase in demand for more sustainable energy sources, recent researchers have been looking into harvesting energy spent by humans for various purposes. One of the available sources of such energy is exercise equipment. While a few products are available in the market to harvest the power expended during an exercise session, these products are costly, and the cost may prohibit a day-to-day user from purchasing those. Motivated by this challenge, this paper describes a long-running research project that uses a static exercise bicycle to sustainably harvest human energy. A regenerative spin bike that uses the friction between a flywheel and a BaneBots wheel was designed and deployed. For the motor mount, two methods are investigated: linear preloading and rotary preloading. A commercially available indoor static bicycle is modified to incorporate the flywheel and the motor attachment. The generated electricity is converted to DC using a three-phase rectifier. A car charger is used for charging any devices attached to the setup. The resulting configuration is very effective in operating small electronic devices. This setup, which uses only off-the-shelf components, can be considered a replacement for its expensive custom-made counterparts.
WinterLab: Developing a low-cost, portable experiment platform to encourage engagement in the electronics lab

Abstract:Encouraging student engagement is a key aim in any educational setting, and allowing students the freedom to pursue their own methods of solving problems through independent experimentation has been shown to markedly improve this. In many contexts, however, allowing students this flexibility in their learning is hampered by constraints of the material itself, such as in the electronics laboratory, where expensive and bulky equipment confines the learning environment to the laboratory room. Finding ourselves in the position of teaching one such laboratory course at the undergraduate level, we sought to encourage students to learn through independent investigation and the pursuit of personal projects, by providing a more flexible and inquiry-based learning environment and allowing them to take their measurement equipment -- and their learning -- beyond the laboratory itself. We present this project as a case of design both for and by students, with the lead designer undertaking the project after attending the course in question, and pursuing its development as a foundational step in their graduate career. We discuss the challenges and opportunities we encountered over the course of the design and development process, and the eventual key output of the project: a portable, low-cost, integrated electronics experimentation platform called the Winterlab board.

Abstract:The design method on bicycle’s functional elements proposed by this research is based on analysis on the winning work in the Global Bicycle Design Competition. Via analyzing its creative design on functional elements, our study is aimed to establish a creative design method on bicycle for designers to develop lots of creative ideas at the concept development stage. This research is divided into three stages, including analysis on bicycle’s creative design elements, construction of creative design method flow on bicycle’s functional elements, and case study on design prototype. For analysis on bicycle’s creative design elements, we have come up with a symbol table of bicycle’s creative functional elements (CFEs). As to construction of creative design method flow on bicycle’s functional elements, we first asked the designer to describe his/her design theme, and then picked bicycle’s CFEs according to the contents described. After CFEs were picked, we then conducted the space position arrangement of functional element symbols. Based on designer’s requirements, we produced several kinds of space arrangements on CFEs, and then we designed a new bicycle by referring to the symbol table of bicycle’s CFEs acquired. In the final step, we followed the flowchart of bicycle’s CFEs constructed by this research, and proceeded a case study prototype design.
Design-based research: A framework for designing novel teaching and learning experiences in middle school engineering education

Abstract:This paper describes the use of design-based research methods in a National Science Foundation sponsored middle-school engineering education effort aimed at creating novel teaching and learning experiences. University experts and middle school teachers designed and implemented an engineering education program. The experiences were offered over a two-year period to 116 students organized into two cohorts in four middle schools as a year-round extracurricular program. The research question addressed is: “What are the characteristics of successful novel teaching and learning experiences for middle school students that use engineering-based project challenges?” The characteristics of the program were: multiple hands-on learning experiences so students discovered for themselves the means to solve the posed project challenge; deliberate use of the engineering design process in meeting each project challenge; use of learning cycle (engage, explore, explain, expand, evaluate) method for instructional planning; cognitive apprenticeships for learners with professional engineers and undergraduate engineering students; access to high quality technologies and tools necessary to meet the project challenge; the use of questioning strategies and learning facilitation techniques that promoted student centered learning experiences; and systematic refinement of learning experience facilitation through an iterative process. Using design-based research methods in the form of a cyclic process of theoretical reflections, conceptual analysis, small-scale curriculum development, and classroom research of the interaction of the novel teaching-learning processes, the project team arrived at a final set of characteristics for engineering-design based project challenges for middle school students.

Abstract:Would urban design considerations and practices be different if the experience of bicycling was given a more central place? Drawing on a review of international literature and practice, this paper compares the characteristics of cyclists with those of pedestrians and motorists, showing that cyclists have a substantial number of unique characteristics that warrant further investigation in terms of a special urban design response. Focusing on four issues—community layout, cycling facilities, analysis and design processes, and detailed design—the paper offers a framework and central considerations for cycling-oriented urban design. It concludes with a call to take the experience of cycling seriously in urban design. This involves moving beyond a concern with safe and convenient facilities and complete networks to a more substantial interest in the experience of the environment from a cyclist's point of view.

Abstract:High school science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curricula are generally knowledge-based in methodology and focus on content delivery in preparation for post-secondary study. However, the rapid technological change at the cutting edge and the rate of global integration in STEM highlight the importance in developing a holistic critical thinking framework for student learning. In 2016, graduate students at the Institute of Biomaterials & Biomedical Engineering created Discovery, a collaborative high school educational program focused on critical thinking skill development through inquiry in the context of biomedical engineering (BME) [1]. Aligning with demonstrated evidence that inquiry-based active learning approaches are more effective in enhancing student learning than traditional teaching methods [2], evaluation in Discovery reinforces the value of a differential learning environment for high school STEM students who struggle in a knowledge-focused classroom [3,4]. In addition, the Discovery model is shown to enhance student attitudes towards STEM and post-secondary education, meanwhile providing robust opportunity for graduate trainees to develop and apply pedagogical skills through development of curriculum appropriate for university-preparatory students. Program impact provides opportunities to discuss this unique learning framework, collaborative delivery strategy, and implementation strategy of Discovery as a resource for translation to disciplines beyond BME, and institutions beyond the University of Toronto.

Abstract:The rising interest in sustainable modes of transportation has increased demand for the design and implementation of bicycle facilities in the United States. However, as compared to the vehicular mode, bicycle facilities have relatively less development, research, and understanding. The availability of a bicycling simulator has the potential to contribute to the understanding of bicycle facility design and bicyclist behavior. The design and construction of a bicycling simulator differs from a driving simulator in many ways. A bicycling simulator requires interfaces for bicycle speed, braking, and steering angle as well as a visual interface. In addition, a representation of a real-world network, including pavement, buildings, the sky and background, and fixed and moving objects, needs to be modeled using a simulator engine. This paper presents the details of the ZouSim bicycling simulator development and the tradeoffs associated with various design decisions, such as the choice of a steering sensor and graphical display. A sample application of a wayfinding and detection markings study illustrates the use of ZouSim. The authors hope that this article will encourage other researchers who conduct research in sustainable cities to explore the use of bicycle simulators for improving bicycle facility design and operations.

Abstract:When evaluating cycling subjective experiences (CSE), mobility researchers have questioned the depictions of cycling as an efficient, fast, and solitary mobility mode. By reframing cycling in terms of its emotional impact on the cyclist, research to date has explored dimensions such as fun, relaxation, and sociability of cycling experiences. Yet, these insights have not been integrated into a holistic understanding of CSE. Addressing this gap, this paper asks: what is the CSE exactly and how do we measure it? We selected and analysed in-depth 50 articles with the aim of unpacking the innate characteristics of CSE. The paper makes a contribution to the research on CSE by presenting a novel framework that clarifies the relationships within existing literature, and identifies measurement methods aligned with this framework. The three interrelated core aspects of CSE are 1) sensory interpretation, 2) affective states, and 3) cognitive construction. Additionally, the three identified methods are 1) retrospective, 2) interceptive, and 3) mobile methods. Notably, retrospective surveys and interviews emerged as the dominant methods employed in the field. However, there has been a growing interest in mobile methods, which enable the collection of real-time and context-specific data, thereby enhancing the generalizability of research findings. Through our analysis we have found that the positive values of cycling experiences have been largely ignored in our sample of studies, revealing a bias of researchers to focus on mobility as a disutility. Based on our findings, we urge planners and scholars to rethink their implicit efforts to mitigate the negative effects of cycling experiences and look for opportunities to optimize for positive cycling experiences.
