Abstract:The potential accumulation of platinum group elements (PGE) in the environment from automobile catalysts is high in urban areas, with the major sinks being roadside soils. Therefore, this investigation presented the detailed study on characterized concentrations of Pt and Pd and their enrichment ratios in urban roadside soils in Xuzhou, China in March 2003. Data from 21 roadside topsoil samples analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) illustrated that the medians of concentrations of Pt and Pd were 2.9 and 2.8 ng/g, respectively. Hierarchical clustering analysis indicated that Pt and Pd were mainly from traffic emissions. Compared to unpolluted soils, computation of Pt and Pd enrichment ratios suggested that the Xuzhou roadside soils had average enrichment factors of 3.53 for Pt (in range of 1.22–5.73) and of 3.37 for Pd (in range of 1.35–4.46). Lower Pt/Pd ratios (in range of 0.35–2.86) in relation to similar studies in other countries were observed, which might be due to the different Pt/Pd ratios in Chinese automobile catalytic converters. Moreover, fine fraction (<250 μm) contained higher concentrations of Pt and Pd compared to the coarse fraction (250–500 μmm).

Abstract:Metal enrichment of road dust is well characterized but available data on the bioaccessibility of metals in particle size fractions relevant to human respiratory health remain limited. The study goal was to investigate the bioaccessibility of platinum group elements (PGE), which are used as catalysts in automotive exhaust converters, in the inhalable fraction of road dust. Street sweepings were provided by the City of Toronto, Canada, collected as part of its Clean Roads to Clean Air program.The particle size relevance of road dust for inhalation exposures was confirmed using a laser diffraction particle size analyzer (mean Dx(50): 9.42 μm). Total PGE were determined in both bulk and inhalable fractions using nickel sulfide (NiS) fire-assay and instrumental neutron-activation analysis (INAA). PGE lung solubility was examined for the inhalable fraction using Gamble's extraction. Sample digests were co-precipitated with Te-Sn, to pre-concentrate and isolate PGE, prior to their measurement using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).Total PGE concentrations were enriched in the inhalable fraction of road sweepings. Geomean concentrations in the inhalable fraction were: palladium (Pd) (152 μg/kg), platinum (Pt) (55 μg/kg), rhodium (Rh) (21 μg/kg) and iridium (Ir) (0.23 μg/kg). Osmium (Os) concentrations were below the limit of detection (LOD). Bioaccessible PGEs (n = 16) using Gamble's solution were below LOD for Ir and ruthenium (Ru). For the remainder, the geomean % bioaccessibility was highest for platinum (16%), followed by rhodium (14%) and palladium (3.4%). This study provides evidence that PGE in road dust are bioaccessible in the human lung.

Abstract:In this paper, Changji, Xinjiang, northwest China, was selected as the study area, and platinum group elements (PGEs) in PM2.5 were quantified by ICP-MS using microwave digestion. The results indicated that the average concentrations (and range) of Rh, Pd, and Pt in PM2.5 were 0.21 (n.d. −1.41) ng/m3, 8.09 (n.d. −59.50) ng/m3, and 0.12 (n.d. −0.83) ng/m3, respectively. The concentration of Pd was significantly higher than Rh and Pt. Moreover, the seasonal variations of Rh and Pd were the same: highest in summer and lower in other seasons. However, the seasonal variation of Pt was opposite to that of Rh and Pd: highest in winter and lower in other seasons. Seasonal differences in emission sources of PGEs and the climatic characteristics of arid regions played important roles in the seasonal changes of PGEs. Rh and Pd had a common source and similar diurnal variation. The major influencing factors were traffic volume and meteorological conditions. The diurnal variation regularity of Pt was different from Rh and Pd. The superimposed effect of vehicle exhaust emissions and coal-fired emissions was the main reason why the diurnal variation of Pt was more complicated than those of Rh and Pd. The diurnal concentration of Pt varied with the seasons. It is caused by seasonal coal combustion and meteorological conditions.

Abstract:This study examines platinum group element concentrations (PGE) (i.e. platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd) and rhodium (Rh)) and their spatial distribution in airborne particulate matter fractions (PM) of human health concern in urban and rural areas of Germany. Fractionated airborne dust and PM(10), PM(2.5) and PM(1) samples were collected along a busy road in Frankfurt am Main from July 2008 to April 2010. PM(10) was also sampled in Deuselbach and Neuglobsow between January 2008 and July 2009 to examine their concentrations at rural locations and potential for long-range transport. Pt, Pd and Rh were isolated and pre-enriched in samples using a combination of Te and Hg co-precipitation methods. Concentrations were determined using isotope dilution ICP-Q-MS (in collision mode with He). The highest airborne PGE concentrations were measured in PM(10) from Frankfurt (e.g. 12.4pg Pt/m(3) (mean)), while the rural locations of Deuselbach and Neuglobsow exhibited the lowest levels (e.g. 2pg Pt/m(3) (mean)). PGE concentrations were observed to decline with increasingly smaller PM size fractions from PM(10) to PM(1). All size fractions generally contained higher levels of Pd compared to Pt and Rh, an element of greater concern due to its solubility. PM(2.5) collected in Frankfurt had a mean of 16.1pg Pd/m(3), compared to 9.4pg/m(3) for Pt. PGE concentrations also demonstrated a distinct seasonal relationship, with the greatest levels occurring in winter. Compared to a previous study in 2002, PGE concentrations in fractionated airborne dust have significantly increased over time. Elevated PGE levels were also measured for PM(10) sampled in Neuglobsow and Deuselbach, which could not be attributed to local emission sources. Using the diagnostic meteorological model, CALMET, trajectory analyses confirmed our hypothesis that PGE are being transported over longer distances from other areas of Europe.

Abstract:The emission of platinum group elements (PGE) from automobile catalytic converters has led to rapid increases in Pt, Pd and Rh concentrations in roadside media. Significant quantities of the PGE may enter and accumulate in fluvial systems via road runoff. This paper examines the occurrence and spatial distribution of autocatalyst-derived PGE in surface sediments of infiltration basin and wetland sediments receiving road-runoff in Perth, Western Australia. Samples were analysed by ICP-MS following microwave digestion and cation exchange. PGE concentrations ranged between 1.5-17.2 Rh, 5.4-61.2 Pd and 9.0-103.8 ng g(-1) Pt. The highest levels of PGE were generally found at basin topographic low points and these concentrations were found to be strongly related to the area of road surface drained and the traffic volume. PGE ratios in infiltration basin and wetland sediments were within the typical range of catalytic converter compositions. However, comparisons of PGE ratios between parent road dusts and infiltration basin sediments revealed a systematic shift in Pt/Pd ratios, suggesting that PGE fractionation can occur during transport through the drainage system and that a small portion of Pd in road dust may be solubilised under natural conditions.

Abstract:This investigation represented the preliminary study to characterize Pt and Pd concentrations and enrichment ratios in urban roadside soils. Roadside soil samples were analyzed by ICP-MS. Data from 21 roadside topsoil samples show medians of Pt and Pd concentrations are 2.9 and 2.8ngg−1, respectively. These values are higher than those of upper crust that average 0.4 and 0.4ngg−1, respectively. The relatively lower Pt and Pd concentrations are expected due to recent introduction of catalysts to China compared to the prolonged use of catalysts in Europe. Hierarchical clustering analysis indicates that Pt and Pd in Xuzhou urban roadside soils were mainly from the traffic emissions. Computation of enrichment ratios using the upper crust values as background levels suggests that the roadside soils had enrichment medians of 6.4 for Pt (range 2.5–11.75) and of 6.75 for Pd (range 2.75–9.25). Lower Pt/Pd ratios (range 0.35–2.86) in relation to similar studies in other countries were observed due to the different automobile catalytic converters. In general, fine fraction (<250μm) contains higher Pt and Pd concentrations compared to the coarse fraction (250–500μm).
Importance of Automobile Exhaust Catalyst Emissions for the Deposition of Platinum, Palladium, and Rhodium in the Northern Hemisphere

Abstract:An estimated 500 million vehicles worldwide are equipped with an exhaust catalyst that uses platinum group elements (PGE) as the main active components and thus contribute to global PGE emissions. Although PGE emitted from automobile exhaust catalysts were first believed to remain in the roadside environment, we propose here that fine PGE-containing particles in automobile exhaust have resulted in a widespread distribution of emitted PGE. Regional and long-range transport of PGE from automobile exhaust catalysts is supported by elevated PGE deposition in both a peat bog located 250 m from traffic and in central Greenland, respectively. Russian smelters were also found to contribute to PGE contamination in central Greenland. Deposition rates estimated for the roadside environment, the peat bog, and central Greenland were used to provide a first estimate of PGE deposition in the northern hemisphere. The results show that deposition of regionally or long-range transported PGE accounts for a large fraction of total PGE deposition, and PGE deposition in the roadside environment represents less than 5% of the total deposition. Transport at the regional and global scales represents an important component in the environmental cycle of emitted PGE and needs to be further studied to fully assess the environmental fate of PGE from automobile exhaust catalysts.

Abstract:Every city in the world faces pollution problems caused by traffic congestion almost every day. Platinum group elements (PGE) have been accumulating in the urban environment as catalytic converters for automobile exhaust emissions control. This study aims to determine the temporal variations of airborne particulate matter (PM)-bound PGE [Platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd) and rhodium (Rh)] in areas close to traffic congestion hotspots. Compared with the morning peak time, the concentrations of Pt, Pd, and Rh in outdoor airborne PM samples (PM2.5) collected in winter during the evening peak time increased by 35.03%, 37.45% and 75.47%, respectively, and the corresponding indoor environment was 9.33%, 6.93% and 71.36%, respectively. Significant temporal variations of PM2.5-bound Pt, Pd, and Rh concentrations were observed during the time period of the Spring Festival. From before to during the Spring Festival, the outdoor environment Pt, Pd, and Rh concentrations sharply decreased by 172.1%, 14.72% and 22.96%, respectively, while the indoor environment decreased by 228.0%, 300.6% and 129.5%, respectively. From a seasonal perspective, among PM2.5 collected from the outdoor environment, PGE concentrations are the highest in winter and the lowest in summer. The temporal variation of the ratios (Pt/Pd, Pt/Rh, and Pd/Rh) indicates that PM2.5-bound Pd concentration increased in the vicinity of traffic congestion. Further, the increased diesel-based trucks with Pt-dominant catalytic converters may contribute to PM2.5-bound Pt detected in the autumn and winter of the alpine area (e.g. Harbin).

Approximately 150 participants attended, including a mix of physicists, biologists, molecular biologists, chemists, engineers and informaticians. Lake Tahoe, which is surrounded by snow-covered mountains, was a beautiful setting for the conference. Those who enjoy skiing could do so during the afternoon breaks, while others could enjoy walks, visit the local town and take time out for informal scientific discussions.

Abstract:Environmental concentrations of platinum group elements (PGE) have been increasing since the introduction of automotive catalytic converters to control harmful emissions. Assessments of the human health risks of exposures to these elements, especially through the inhalation of PGE-associated airborne particulate matter (PM), have been hampered by a lack of data on their bioaccessibility. The purpose of this study is to apply in vitro methods using simulated human lung fluids [artificial lysosomal fluid (ALF) and Gamble's solution] to assess the mobility of the PGE, platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and rhodium (Rh) in airborne PM of human health concern. Airborne PM samples (PM(10), PM(2.5), and PM(1)) were collected in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. For comparison, the same extraction experiments were conducted using the standard reference material, Used Auto Catalyst (monolith) (NIST 2557). Pt and Pd concentrations were measured using isotope dilution ICP-Q-MS, while Rh was measured directly with ICP-Q-MS (in collision mode with He), following established matrix separation and enrichment procedures, for both solid (filtered residues) and extracted sample phases. The mobilized fractions measured for PGE in PM(10), PM(2.5), and PM(1) were highly variable, which can be attributed to the heterogenic nature of airborne PM and its composition. Overall, the mobility of PGE in airborne PM samples was notable, with a mean of 51% Rh, 22% Pt, and 29% Pd present in PM(1) being mobilized by ALF after 24 h. For PM(1) exposed to Gamble's solution, a mean of 44% Rh, 18% Pt, and 17% Pd was measured in solution after 24 h. The mobility of PGE associated with airborne PM was also determined to be much higher compared to that measured for the auto catalyst standard reference material. The results suggest that PGE emitted from automotive catalytic converters are likely to undergo chemical transformations during and/or after being emitted in the environment. This study highlights the need to conduct bioaccessibility experiments using samples collected in the field to enable an adequate assessment of risk.
Platinum and palladium variations through the urban environment: Evidence from 11 sample types from Sheffield, UK

Abstract:Platinum (Pt) and Palladium (Pd) concentrations have been analysed in 194 samples from within the city of Sheffield in the UK. The samples were taken from road dust, gully pots (also known as drains), soils, a motorway drainage pipe, rivers, lakes, sewage sludge, incinerator ash, incinerator ash in landfill, street cleansers and gully cleansers. The introduction of Pt- and Pd-bearing automobile catalysts, has been cited as the cause of a rise in the concentration of urban Pt and Pd accumulations. Geochemical analyses for the different sample types are used here to show how the Pt and Pd accumulate in different urban environments as they are transported from their catalytic source. Initially Pt and Pd collect in road dust and gully pots at values of up to 450 ppb although most analyses for both elements are around 100 ppb. The four roadside soils analysed, have a great range in values, the highest with a value of over 600 ppb Pt and 1000 ppb Pd. Then the fate of the Pt and Pd is either to be removed by gully flushers and road sweepers (which contain around half the concentration of that in road dust) or to be washed from the roads, through the gully pots, into either the river or urban drainage systems. Due to the addition of terrestrial sediments, river samples contain much reduced values of Pt and Pd, at approximately an order of magnitude lower than in road dust. Similarly, sewage sludge contains Pt and Pd values which are lower than road dust. However, the Pt and Pd analyses are much higher in incinerated sewage (with many samples over 150 ppb for both metals), probably due to the loss of the mass of other material during the incineration process. Weathered incinerator ash in landfill has lower values of Pt and Pd than fresh ash from the incinerator. Although the range in values of Pt and Pd is similar for road dust and gully pot sediments their modal values tell a different story. The mode for Pt is very similar for both road dust and gully pot sediments, at around 100 ppb, whereas there is a drop of 50 ppb in the mode for Pd in the gully pots (from 80 ppb to around 40 ppb). Given that gully pot sediment is derived from road dust, it is suggested that in gully pots, Pd is preferentially mobilized over Pt. Furthermore, a comparison of the modal values of Pt and Pd in river sediments suggests that this process continues into the natural drainage system of the city.

Abstract:Automotive catalytic converters, in which Pt, Pd and Rh (platinum-group elements; PGEs) are the active components for eliminating several noxious components from exhaust fumes, have become the main source of environmental urban pollution by PGEs. This work reports on the catalyst morphology through changes in catalyst surface by scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) and laser-induced breakdown spectrometry (LIBS) from fresh to aged catalytic converters. The distribution of these elements in the fresh catalysts analysed (Pt-Pd-Rh gasoline catalyst) is not uniform and occurs mainly in a longitudinal direction. This heterogeneity seems to be greater for Pt and Pd. PGEs released by the catalysts, fresh and aged 30,000 km, were studied in parallel. Whole raw exhaust fumes from four catalysts of three different types were also examined. Two of these were gasoline catalysts (Pt-Pd Rh and Pd-Rh) and the other two were diesel catalysts (Pt). Samples were collected following the 91,441 EUDC driving cycle for light-duty vehicle testing. The results show that at 0 km the samples collected first have the highest content of particulate PGEs and although the general tendency is for the release to decrease with increasing number of samples taken, exceptions are frequent. At 30,000 km the released PGEs in gasoline and diesel catalysts decreased significantly. For fresh gasoline catalysts the mean of the total amount released was approximately 100, 250 and 50 ng km(-1) for Pt, Pd and Rh, respectively. In diesel catalysts the Pt release varied in the range 400-800 ng km-1. After ageing the catalysts up to 30,000 km, the gasoline catalysts released amounts of Pt between 6 and 8 ng km(-1), Pd between 12 and 16 ng km(-1) and Rh between 3 and 12 ng km(-1). In diesel catalysts the Pt release varied in the range 108-150 ng km(-1). The soluble portion of PGEs in the HNO3 collector solution represented less than 5% of the total amount for fresh catalysts. For 30,000 km the total amount of soluble PGEs released was similar or slightly higher than for 0 km.

Abstract:Platinum group elements (PGEs, i.e. platinum, Pt; palladium, Pd; and rhodium, Rh) catalyse over 90% of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons from combustion residues into water vapour, carbon dioxide and nitrogen in the vehicle’s catalytic converter. But there is a major concern over these metals in the scientific world, since they are emitted by catalytic converters and accumulating in the environment. The distribution of PGEs in PM10 fraction was studied in an open urban site (Nantes, France) and in a tunnel (Paris, France) using low- and high-volume air samplers. PGEs were also investigated in dry deposition particles and deposited dust sampled in the tunnel. Pd occurred at the highest levels in both PM10 and dry deposition samples, followed by Rh and Pt. Maximum concentrations in PM10 fraction were 114 pg m−3 for Pd, 14.3 pg m−3 for Rh and 3.3 pg m−3 for Pt in the urban site (Nantes) and 91 pg m−3 for Pd and 16 pg m−3 for Rh in the tunnel (Paris). The concentrations for dry depositions in the tunnel were 261 μg kg−1 for Pt, 431 μg kg−1 for Pd and 85 μg kg−1 for Rh. The results on PGEs levels in atmospheric particles and dry depositions are the first data of their kind in France and will provide new insights into the contribution of catalytic converters to the environment. We also observed Pd and Rh being 2 times higher PM10 particles compared to dry depositions, leading us to suggest that particles rich in Pd and Rh are smaller than 10 μm. An overall concentration trend of Pd > Rh > Pt was observed in all samples, showing the replacement of Pt by Pd and Rh in newer catalytic converters.

Abstract:Background, aim, and scope: The widespread use of some platinum group elements as catalysts to minimize emission of pollutants from combustion engines produced a constantly growing increase of the concentration of these elements in the environment; their potential toxicological properties explain the increasing interest in routine easy monitoring. We have found that leaves of Prunus laurus cerasus are efficient collectors of particulate with a dimension <60-80 mum, and a simple and reliable procedure was developed to reveal traces of platinum, palladium, and rhodium released from automotive catalysts. The analysis of the dust deposited on the foliage is a direct indicator of traffic pollution. Materials and methods: Leaves of P. laurus cerasus were washed by sonication in a mixture of water and 2-propanol and the washings, to be discarded, were separated by centrifugation to yield typically 0.05-1.2 g of dust that, after mineralization, was directly submitted for atomic absorption analysis. Results: Comparison of the 2007 and 2004-2005 results showed a dramatic reduction of the platinum levels and revealed that palladium is now the main component of this traffic-related pollution. Discussion: The results are consistent with the increasing diffusion of cars with a diesel engine whose catalysts are made up of Pt and/or Pd alone, and gives a significant insight into the recent evolution in catalyst design that replaces platinum for palladium. Conclusions: The proposed analytical procedure is simple, with short preparation times, and greatly reduces matrix effects so that atomic absorption spectroscopy can easily detect the three noble metals at the ng/g level in the dust. Recommendation and perspectives: The results clearly show that Pd concentrations have increased over time, and must be cause for concern.

Abstract:PurposeThis study assessed the concentrations of platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd) in surface sediments and sedimentary cores collected from the Pearl River Estuary with a view of evaluating the distribution, background levels, possible sources, and contamination level of anthropogenic Pt and Pd.Materials and methodsThirty-six samples of surface sediments and 12 samples from sedimentary cores were collected. Al2O3 was analyzed on fused glass disks by X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. Heavy metal elements were measured by inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry. Pt and Pd were separated from the sample matrix by anion exchange chromatography and subsequent solvent extraction after samples had been digested in Carius tubes using aqua regia. The analysis of Pt and Pd was performed by isotopic dilution-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry.Results and discussionPt and Pd concentrations in surface sediments were 0.28–2.11 and 0.39–38.30 ng/g, respectively, and Pt and Pd concentrations in sedimentary cores were 0.19–1.18 and 0.15–1.76 ng/g, respectively. Background values of Pt and Pd were 0.20–1.17 and 0.10–1.34 ng/g, respectively. The spatial distribution of the enrichment factor differed between Pt and Pd in surface sediments. Down-core variations in Pt, Pd, and other heavy metal elements were similar in all cases and were related to sediment type.ConclusionsSome of the Pt and Pt in surface samples were derived from anthropogenic emissions. Pt and Pd were delivered to the sediment by fluvial input. In addition to vehicle exhaust catalysts, Pt and Pd were derived from other sources (e.g., industrial process). An important post-burial remobilization process of Pt and Pd is likely to be particle mixing by billows caused by typhoon.

Improving adherence to sertraline treatment: the effectiveness of a patient education intervention.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Previous attempts to improve anti-depressant adherence have achieved mixed results. The current study evaluated the effectiveness of a patient education intervention designed to increase adherence to sertraline treatment. METHOD Data from a national pharmacy claims database were used to retrospectively match (along key demographic and clinical variables) consecutive patients prescribed sertraline (N = 1462) who received an educational intervention (Knowing More) between May 1, 2003, and April 30, 2004, with a control group of concurrent sertraline-treated patients who did not receive the intervention (N = 1462). The intervention consisted of 10 newsletters distributed over a 9-month period by mail and e-mail. The intervention and control groups were compared over a 7-month follow-up period on 3 adherence measures: time to discontinuation, days on therapy, and percentage of days on therapy. RESULTS Cox regression analysis revealed that the time to discontinuation of sertraline (median = 100 days) was significantly greater (p < .0001) for the intervention group compared with the control group (median = 60 days). By the end of the follow-up period, 27% of patients remained on therapy with Knowing More versus 15% of those not enrolled in the compliance program. The mean number of days on therapy was 24.8 days (25.5%) longer for the intervention group compared with the control group (122.5 days for the intervention group versus 97.7 days for the control group). The percentage of days on therapy was 88.2% for the intervention group versus 77.7% for the control group among patients with at least 1 refill prescription (p < .001). CONCLUSION The educational compliance intervention, Knowing More, was associated with a significant increase in adherence to antidepressant treatment.

Abstract:A new type of automobile catalyst based on an active Pd/Rh-layer is presently being introduced into the European market. Accordingly, in order to establish baseline information, this work attempts to assess the magnitude of Pd emissions by automobile catalysts to date. Thus, a survey is presented on Pd and Pt levels detected in polluted environmental matrices (grass, soil, dust, sludges) as available from the literature. Additionally, Pd data measured by selective preconcentration/GF-AAS-detection in polluted grass, in a time series of sewage sludge ashes back to 1972, in dust, as well as in urban rain are presented. Since the data basis from the literature is partly inconsistent, the possible impact of different analytical attempts on the data is discussed. The relationship between Pt and Pd concentration from most of the results is between 5 and 10 (Pt/Pd). However, relations down to 0.04 are also reported, thus implying anthropogenic Pd input from additional sources.
