Abstract:Objective To evaluate the clinical efficacy and compare with these of safety of Ultrasound-guided percutaneous microwave ablation and surgical resection for papillary thyroid microcarcinoma.Methods 65 patients with ultrasound guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy(FNAB)proven thyroid papillary carcinoma,nodal diameter<1.0cm,have divided into two groups according to their preference,30 cases were enrolled in microwave ablation treatment group and 35 cases in surgical treatment group.Operation time,amount of blood loss,complications,postoperative changes of thyroid-related hormone levels and tumor shrinkage after microwave ablation were observed in two groups.Results In the microwave ablation treatment group,the operation time was shorter,the amount of blood loss was less and the hospitalization time the thyroid-related hormone levels was changed small after the treatment.The differences between the two groups were statistically significant(P>0.05).While the postoperative complications and efficiency between the two groups were not statistically significant(P>0.05).Conclusions Ultrasound-guided percutaneous microwave ablation therapy of thyroid papillary carcinoma has advantage than surgical resection,it′s a new minimally invasive treatment for patient who have surgical contraindications or reluctant to surgery.
US-Guided Percutaneous Microwave Ablation for Primary Hyperparathyroidism with Parathyroid Nodules: Feasibility and Safety Study.

Abstract:To test the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of microwave (MW) ablation for primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) in patients who are unsuited or unwilling to undergo surgery.Fifteen patients with benign parathyroid nodules were treated with MW ablation. Ultrasound, laboratory data, and clinical symptoms were evaluated before treatment; 1 week and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment; and every 6-12 months thereafter.All patients were followed up for more than 1 year, with an average duration of 32.8 months ± 17.9. Eleven patients underwent successful ablation in a single session, and two patients with bilateral disease and two patients with residual disease were treated with two sessions each. The rate of complete nodule disappearance was 17.6%. Nodule volume and serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcium levels were significantly lower at the last follow-up than before treatment (volume, 0.39 cm(3) ± 0.69 vs 2.62 cm(3) ± 3.32; PTH, 54.5 pg/mL ± 24.1 vs 592.5 pg/mL ± 579.1; and calcium, 2.32 mmol/L ± 0.12 vs 2.93 mmol/L ± 0.47; P < .01). Treatment was well tolerated. Minor complications included transient voice change in one patient.MW ablation is a safe and effective technique for the treatment of pHPT. It is a good alternative for patients who do not meet surgery criteria or decline surgery.

Abstract:Ultrasound-guided thermal ablation has been shown to considerably reduce nodule-related discomfort and cosmetic problems. Hence, this review was done to determine the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided radiofrequency or microwave ablation in the management of benign thyroid nodules. Searches were done in EMBASE, SCOPUS, PubMed Central, Cochrane library, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and until August 2022. Meta-analysis was carried out using random-effects model. With 95% confidence intervals (CIs), pooled standardized mean differences, mean differences, and/or odds ratio reported. In total, we analyzed 16 studies, most of them had high risk of bias. The pooled standardized mean difference for symptom score was -1.01 (95% CI, -1.83 to -0.19; I-2 = 94.2%), for cosmetic relief was -1.26 (95% CI, -2.27 to -0.24; I-2 = 96%), for postoperative nodule volume was -1.77 (95% CI, -3.06 to -0.48; I-2 = 94%), for hospital stay was -3.88 (95% CI, -4.58 to -3.18; I-2 = 91.1%), for operation time was -3.30 (95% CI, -3.95 to -2.64; I-2 = 93.4%). The pooled odds ratio for postoperative pain was 0.04 (95% CI, 0.00-0.35; I-2 = 95.1%), for postoperative hypothyroidism was 0.04 (95% CI, 0.01-0.11; I-2 = 0%), for postoperative hoarseness was 0.56 (95% CI, 0.22-1.47; I-2 = 0%), for postoperative hematoma was 0.57 (95% CI, 0.15-2.22; I-2 = 0%). Ultrasound-guided radiofrequency and microwave ablation had better efficacy and safety profile in terms of symptoms, cosmetic relief, complication rate, duration of stay, and operation time when compared with conventional surgery or observation without treatment for patients with benign thyroid nodules.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Thyroid nodules are a fairly common finding in general population and, even if most of them are benign, a treatment can be however necessary. In the last years, non surgical minimally invasive techniques have been developed to treat this pathology, starting from percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI), to laser ablation (LA), radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and, most recently, microwave ablation (MWA).METHODS: We reviewed all medical literature searching in pubmed.gov the terms "microwave" & "thyroid". We found three original studies concerning MWA treatment, for a total of 263 patients (mean age 51.0 years; range, 15-80 years; male to female ratio 2.55) and 522 nodules.RESULTS: A total of 522 nodules (338 solid, 22 cystic, 162 mixed) in 263 patients were treated. Studies have shown a mean reduction in volume of thyroid nodules ranging from 45.9% to 65%. No study reported a significant and definitive change in laboratory parameters, except for one case (Heck et al.). No studies have reported major complications after procedure.CONCLUSIONS: MWA is a new, promising technique among the minimally invasive treatments of thyroid nodules. Actually, the larger diameter of MW antenna seems to be the major limiting factor in the use of this technique. More studies are necessary to evaluate feasibility, safety and efficacy of the procedure.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation (MWA) for the treatment of benign thyroid nodules (BTNs). METHODS:Patients with BTNs were treated in our hospital, including 72 patients treated with RFA and 100 patients treated with MWA from June 2016 to March 2019. The volume reduction rates (VRRs), thyroid function, clinical status, and complications were compared at each postoperative duration to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the two modalities. RESULTS:The mean VRRs of the RFA group vs. the MWA group at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months were 22.7±13.4% vs. 24.0±16.1% (P = 0.681), 56.1±19.5% vs. 54.8±22.8% (P = 0.788), 77.9±21.0% vs. 68.7±19.1% (P = 0.038), and 85.4±18.9% vs. 75.8±19.4% (P = 0.029), respectively. There was no significant difference in the VRRs between the two treatments at 1 and 3 months and the RFA group achieved higher VRRs than MWA group at 6 and 12 months. Moreover, the symptom and cosmetic scores decreased significantly in both groups and all patients succeeded in preserving thyroid function. Of the total patients, 2.8% in the RFA group and 4% in the MWA group experienced voice changes after undergoing thyroid ablation, and one patient in the RFA group had intraoperative hemorrhage of about 10 mL. CONCLUSIONS:RFA and MWA are both effective and safe techniques for treating BTNs. Higher VRRs were observed at the 6- and 12-month follow-ups in the RFA group.
Efficacy of microwave ablation in the treatment of large benign thyroid nodules: a multi-center study

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the efficacy, safety, and improvement of symptoms by ultrasound-guided microwave ablation (MWA) for patients with large benign thyroid nodules (BTNs). Methods: Eighty-seven patients with 87 BTNs (≥ 4 cm) treated with MWA between April 2015 and March 2021 were enrolled in this retrospective multicenter study, with clinical and ultrasound examinations performed at the 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 12th months. A multivariable linear mixed effects model was employed to explore the alterations in volume and volume reduction ratio (VRR), as well as the potential factors associated with VRR. Results: The mean age of the 87 patients was 45.69 ± 14.21 years (range 18-76 years), and the ratio of men to women was 1:4.8. The mean volumes were much decreased at the 12th month after ablation compared to the initial volumes (p < .001). The mean VRR was 76.09% at the 12th month. The technique efficacy (VRR > 50%) was 90.80% at the 12th month. A multivariate analysis revealed that VRR was related to the initial volume (p = .015), annular flow (p = .010), and nodule composition (p = .024). The mean symptomatic score decreased from 4.40 ± 0.28 to 0.26 ± 0.06 at the 12th month (p < .001). At the same time, the mean cosmetic score decreased from 3.22 ± 0.10 to 1.31 ± 0.08 (p < .001). Conclusion: MWA could serve as a safe and effective therapy for large BTNs, significantly reducing the volume of BTNs and significantly improving compressive symptoms and appearance problems. Clinical relevance statement: Microwave ablation could serve as a safe and effective therapy for large benign thyroid nodules, leading to significant volume reduction and satisfied symptom and cosmetic alleviation period. Key points: • This multicenter study investigated the feasibility and safety of microwave ablation for large benign thyroid nodules. • After ablation, the nodule volume was significantly reduced, and patients' symptoms and appearance problems were significantly improved. • Microwave ablation is feasible for large benign thyroid nodules and has been a supplement treatment.
Clinical Effects of Microwave Ablation in the Treatment of Low-Risk Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinomas and Related Histopathological Changes

Abstract:Objective This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of ultrasound-guided percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) in the treatment of low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC), and to observe the histopathological changes after MWA. Methods MWA was performed under ultrasound guidance for 73 unifocal PTMC patients without clinically cervical or distant metastasis. The target ablation zone exceeded the tumor edge (judged by contrast-enhanced US) to avoid marginal residue and recurrence. Ultrasound evaluation was performed at 1 day, 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months after treatment, and thyroid function evaluation at the first 6 months. Repeated fine needle aspiration cytology or core needle biopsy pathology was performed at 3 or 6 months after MWA to evaluate residual tumors. Any adverse event associated with MWA was evaluated. Results The follow-up after MWA lasted 6 (6, 12) months. Tumor volume decreased significantly from 0.06 mm 3 (0.04, 0.11 mm 3 ) to 0.03 mm 3 (0.00, 0.06 mm 3 ) at 12 months after MWA ( P < 0.001), with a median volume reduction ratio of 80.28% (-7.43, 100%) and 16 cases (21.92%) presenting complete remission. The largest diameter, volume and ablation energy were found to be different in patients with and without complete remission 12 months after MWA. On histopathological examinations, no atypical or malignant follicular cells were identified after thermal ablation. The most common pathological characteristics were fibroblastic proliferation (34/39, 87.18%) and chronic inflammation (32/39, 82.05%), followed by infarction (21/39, 53.85%). Five patients were transferred to thyroidectomy and 4 of them were confirmed with local recurrence and/or lymph node metastasis. Serum thyrotropin decreased transiently after MWA ( P < 0.01) but normalized thereafter. No serious and permanent complications were reported. Conclusions MWA is a safe and effective treatment for low-risk PTMC. Fibroblastic proliferation and chronic inflammation are the most common pathological changes after MWA of PTMC.

Microwave versus Radiofrequency Ablation in Treating Predominantly Solid Benign Thyroid Nodules: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Background Current guidelines recommend radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as the first-line treatment for benign thyroid nodules. Purpose To compare the efficacy and safety of microwave ablation (MWA) and RFA for the treatment of predominantly solid benign thyroid nodules. Materials and Methods This prospective, randomized, open-label, multicenter study was conducted from August 2019 to February 2023. Participants with nonfunctioning, predominantly solid benign thyroid nodules from five institutions were randomly assigned with a 1:1 ratio to receive MWA or RFA treatment. Participants were followed up for at least 2 years. Primary outcomes were 6-month and 2-year volume reduction rate (VRR) of nodules after ablation. Secondary outcomes included VRR change over time, complications, and technique efficacy (defined as volumetric reduction ≥ 50% of the initial nodule volume). Continuous variables and categorical variables were compared using the t test and the χ2 test or Fisher exact test, respectively. Results This study included 76 participants in the MWA group (mean age, 46 years ± 12 [SD]; 58 female participants) and 76 in the RFA group (mean age, 50 years ± 13; 56 female participants). MWA was noninferior to RFA in terms of 6-month (mean difference, -5.6%; P = .01) and 2-year (-2.4%; P < .001) VRR after ablation. Comparing MWA and RFA, no evidence of a difference was observed for VRR change over time (mean difference from mixed-effects analysis, 6.9% [95% CI: -0.5, 13.9]; P = .73) or technique efficacy (91% vs 86%; P = .40). The most common major complication was voice change, which occurred in 6.6% of participants in the MWA group and 1.3% of participants in the RFA group (P = .21). Conclusion MWA and RFA showed comparable efficacy for treating participants with predominantly solid benign thyroid nodules. However, a larger sample size is needed to demonstrate that safety is comparable between the procedures. Effects of Microwave Ablation on Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma: A Five-Year Follow-Up Report

Abstract:Background: Some researchers have achieved favourable efficacy in the treatment of primary papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) using microwave ablation (MWA). However, as PTMC is a slowly progressing disease, a long follow-up period is required to confirm treatment efficacy. Our study aim was to investigate the long-term efficacy and safety of ultrasound guided MWA in PTMC. Methods: In this study, 41 patients with thyroid masses (41 nodules) were diagnosed with PTMC by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) or core needle biopsy (CNB). They underwent ultrasound-guided MWA. Pre-ablation ultrasonic images of the thyroid nodules were collected, and the volumes were measured. The patients had follow up at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months in the first year and every 6 months from the second year on, after MWA. The volume reduction rates (VRRs) of the thyroid nodules were analysed. Results: In total, 40 of 41 nodules were completely ablated by MWA. After 60 months of follow-up, the volume significantly decreased from 55.78 (21.50, 112.20) mm3 to 0 (0, 0) mm3 (P<0.001), with a VRR of 99.37±4.02%. Two patients developed hoarseness after ablation; one recovered within 10 min, and the hoarseness symptom in the other patient resolved 2 months after the ablation.No recurrence, metastatic cervical lymph nodes or distal metastasis were found during the follow-up period. Conclusion: In this 5-year follow-up, MWA presented favourable efficacy with satisfactory safety for the treatment of PTMC. It should be considered as an alternative therapy to surgery and active surveillance for solitary PTMC.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To determine how well ultrasound-guidance percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation (MWA) performed for benign symptomatic thyroid nodules in terms of clinical and functional outcomes.METHODS: Patients who had a thyroid nodule-linked symptoms acting as dysphagia, cosmetic issues, pain, a foreign body sense, hyperthyroidism secondary to autonomous nodules, or concern of malignancy were involved in the study. The primary was the comparison in symptom scores obtained at 1, 3, and 6 months after RFA and MWA. The volume alterations in nodules and alterations in thyroid gland functions were secondary objectives.RESULTS: This prospective study carried out from November 2014 and January 2017 at the General Surgery Department, Marmara University, Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul, Turkey included a total of 100 nodules (50% MWA, 50% RFA). There were statistically significance in pain scores, dysphagia scores, and foreign body sensation scores at 1, 3, and 6 months after therapy in both ablation groups (p=0.0006, p=00004, p=0.0005). At the same time, there were statistically significant reductions in size and volume of the nodules for RFA and MWA (p=0.0004, p=0.0003). There was no significant difference between the RFA and MWA groups' cosmetic scoring and volume changes (p=0.68, p=0.43).CONCLUSIONS: Alternative therapies for benign symptomatic thyroid nodules include RFA and MWA. The findings of this research revealed that both approaches are safe and effective.

Abstract:Objective To compare the short-term safety and efficacy of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation (MWA) for treatment of large benign thyroid nodules.Methods A total of 34 patients with large benign thyroid nodules were studied retrospectively,including 13 patients treated with ultrasound-guided RFA and 21 patients treated with MWA between Jun.,2016 and Feb.,2017 in Zhongshan Hospital.The thyroid function parameters,serum antibodies,complications and thyroid nodules volume reduction rate(VRR) were compared between the two groups during the follow-up.Results There were no statistically significant differences(P＞0.05)among those patients before and after treatment in serum free triiodothyronine (fT3),free thyroxine (fT4),thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH),anti-thyroglobulin antibodies (TG-Ab) levels,and thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO-Ab).One patient in the MWA group had mild hoarseness after ablation and another patient in the RFA group had intraoperative hemorrhage for about 10 mL.There were no other complications such as neck scar,postoperative infection,skin burns,tracheal and esophageal injury.One day after the ablation,all nodules were showed hypoecho and contrast-enhanced ultrasound proved there was no blood supply.One month after treatment,no statistically significant difference was found in VRR between two groups (23.8％ vs.22.6％,P =0.127).Conclusions RFA and MWA are safe and effective treatments for large benign thyroid nodules,and no significant difference was observed in short-term follow-up.

Abstract:Thyroid schwannoma, a rare neoplasm of the thyroid gland, originates from Schwann cells that form the myelin sheath. A 47-year-old woman presented with a progressively enlarging thyroid nodule, which was monitored by repeated ultrasonography over the previous 2 years. Following a diagnosis of thyroid schwannoma by core needle biopsy and immunohistochemical staining, the patient underwent ultrasound-guided microwave ablation (MWA). Subsequent thyroid ultrasounds indicated a gradual decrease in the tumor's volume, achieving a 12-month volume reduction ratio of 79.20%. No complications were observed. Ultrasound-guided MWA may serve as an effective alternative to conventional surgery for managing thyroid schwannomas.

Abstract:PURPOSE: To study the feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of microwave ablation (MWA) in patients with multifocal papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC).MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included patients who underwent MWA for multifocal PTMC (number of nodules ≤3). A total of 44 patients were included, and the mean age was 43 years (SD ± 11). After ablation, progression-free survival (PFS) at 6, 12, 24, 36, and 48 months; disease progression; change in tumor size and volume; tumor disappearance rate; and adverse events (AEs) were assessed, and the feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of MWA for PTMC were evaluated on the basis of statistical analysis.RESULTS: The median follow-up period was 18 months (interquartile range, 12-33 months). The PFS rates at 6, 12, 24, 36, and 48 months were 100.0%, 96.4%, 96.4%, 70.3%, and 52.7%, respectively. The disease progression rate was 11.4% (5 of 44 patients). The maximum diameter (MD) and volume of the ablation zone were larger at the 3-month follow-up than before ablation (median MD, 13.0 vs 7.0 mm; P < .001; median volume, 503.8 vs 113.0 mm3; P < .001). Subsequently, the tumors exhibited a reduction in both size and volume after 18 months (median MD, 4.0 vs 7.0 mm; P = .04; median volume, 12.6 vs 113.0 mm3; P = .055). At the end of the follow-up period, the complete response rate was 59% (26 of 44 patients). The overall AE rate was 6.8%.CONCLUSIONS: MWA is a feasible treatment for PTMC (number of nodules ≤3), and this study preliminarily demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of this technique.

Abstract:Abstract Background: To evaluate the feasibility and safety of microwave ablation (MWA) for PTC with metastatic cervical lymph nodes who are ineligible for or refuse surgery. Materials and Methods: Twenty patients of unifocal PTC with metastatic cervical lymph nodes from three hospitals were enrolled in this study, and MWAs were performed. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound was used to evaluate the extent of ablation. The volume of the ablated area and thyroid hormones were measured. Results: PTC nodules in 9 patients completely disappeared at the end of follow-up. Compared with the volume before ablation, the mean volume reduction ratio of ablated lesions was 0.414 ± 0.700 (range: -1.92-0.95) at postoperative 6 months. The patients' thyroid function tests were normal at the end of follow-up. New lymph node metastasis was found in one patient during follow-up visits and she underwent a second MWA procedure. For the other patients, no new PTC nodule, local recurrence or cervical lymph node metastasis were suspected on ultrasound by the end of follow-up. No distant metastasis was encountered during the follow up. None of the patients developed hypocalcemia, permanent hoarseness or skin burns. Conclusions: MWA is a minimal invasive and safe method in treating PTC with cervical lymph node metastasis.
Comparative efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation and microwave ablation in benign thyroid nodule treatment: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Objective: Ultrasound-guided thermal ablation, including radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation (MWA), has become one of the main options for treating benign thyroid nodules (BTNs). To assess the efficacy of thermal ablation of BTNs, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of relevant studies. Materials and methods: A comprehensive search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and COCHRANE databases was performed up to September 25, 2023, to identify studies directly comparing RFA and MWA for pathologically proven BTNs and reporting clinical outcomes and complications. Data extraction and quality assessment were independently performed by two radiologists according to PRISMA guidelines. The analysis yielded the serial volume reduction ratios (VRRs) of ablated nodules for up to 12 months, symptom and cosmetic scores, and complications. Results: This analysis included nine studies with 1305 BTNs treated by RFA and 1276 by MWA. VRRs at 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months were similar between RFA and MWA, but RFA showed a significantly higher VRR (83.3%) than MWA (76.9%) at 12 months (p = 0.02). Complication rates showed no significant difference between the two methods. Symptom and cosmetic scores significantly decreased after ablation, without a significant difference between the methods. Subgroup analysis indicated a significantly higher VRR at 12 months for RFA than for MWA for less experienced investigators (≤ 10 years), but no significant difference for more experienced investigators (> 10 years). Conclusion: RFA and MWA are both effective and safe methods for treating BTNs. RFA showed a higher VRR at 12 months and seems more suitable for less experienced investigators. Clinical relevance statement: RFA and MWA are both effective and safe treatments for BTNs, with RFA showing a higher VRR at 12 months. Both methods offer minimally invasive and reliable treatment for thyroid nodules. Key points: The most effective thermal ablation technique for BTNs remains undetermined. RFA showed a higher VRR at 12 months than MWA. Both techniques are effective for treating thyroid nodules; RFA offers greater benefits, particularly for less experienced investigators.

Abstract:PURPOSE: Comparison between different thermal ablation systems for thyroid nodules regarding their different procedural characteristics such as treatment-time, number of shots and energy transmission in the context of their clinical performance such as complication rate and volume reduction after three months.METHODS: A total of 60 patients with 65 nodules underwent thermal ablation of thyroid nodules with either microwave ablation (MWA) (9 male, 15 female and mean age 57 ± 13 years) or radiofrequency ablation (RFA) (12 male, 24 female and mean age 54 ± 12 years).RESULTS: Mean initial volume (MWA: 23.90 ± 17.35 ml; RFA: 29.44 ± 30.09 ml), energy transmission (MWA: 13.56 ± 10.17 kJ; RFA: 15.12 ± 13.45 kJ), energy transmission per ml (MWA: 0.85 ± 1.01 kJ/ml; RFA: 0.65 ± 0.32 kJ/ml), power (MWA: 22.69 ± 12.32 J/s; RFA: 20.97 ± 7.86 J/s) and duration of ablation (MWA: 618 ± 304 s; RFA: 695 ± 463 s) were not statistically different (p > .05). MWA required significantly less shots (MWA: 3 ± 1; RFA: 6 ± 3) than RFA (p < .05). At three-months follow-up a significant mean nodular volume reduction of 53.54 ± 15.40% after MWA and 51.21 ± 16.58% after RFA (p < .05) was measured. However, mean nodular volume reduction was not significantly different between both systems (p > .05). One patient treated by MWA reported a transient Horner's syndrome, which recovered without any further treatment. Major complications such as nodule rupture, infection or persisting nerve injuries did not occur.CONCLUSION: Both systems are suitable to treat thyroid nodules and show no significant difference in the duration of application, energy transmission and volume reduction. However, MWA requires less shots to treat the whole nodule.

Association between self-reported childhood socioeconomic position and adult lung function: findings from the British Women’s Heart and Health Study

Abstract:Background: A study was undertaken to assess the associations between indicators of early life socioeconomic position and lung function in older adulthood. Methods: The associations of self-reported indicators of childhood socioeconomic position with adult lung function (forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and forced expiratory flow rate during mid expiration (FEF25–75), all measured using standard procedures) were assessed in a cross sectional study of 3641 British women aged 60–79 years. Results: In confounder adjusted analyses, each individual indicator of childhood circumstances was inversely associated with each measure of lung function. In the fully adjusted models (including mutual adjustment for each of the other indicators of childhood socioeconomic circumstances), only childhood occupational social class and access to a car were associated with lung function in adulthood. However, there were strong linear trends of worsening lung function with greater numbers of indicators of childhood poverty (all p values <0.001). Conclusions: Childhood poverty is associated with poorer lung function in women aged 60–79 years. Adverse childhood circumstances that affect both lung growth and development and cardiovascular disease in later life may explain some of the well known associations between poor lung function and cardiovascular disease, or lung function may be an important mediating factor in this association.
