Abstract:A photo-neutron source driven by 15MeV electron Linac is under construction at Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics (SINAP, CAS). Several kinds of beam monitors (BPM, Profile and ICT) have been installed. The stripline beam position monitor with eight electrodes was designed, also for energy spread measurement. Due to the multi-bunch operation mode, the customed RF front end was adopted, which down-convert the signal from 2856MHz to 500MHz and then bring it to Libera Single Pass E. The beam profile monitor was based on the integrated step-servo motor and GigE Vision camera. For the beam charge measurement we used the ICT from Bergoz and oscilloscope from Agilent. The details of the beam diagnostics system for the 15MeV electron Linac will be reported in this paper. OVERVIEW A photo-neutron source driven by 15MeV electron Linac is under construction at Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. High Intensity Proton Beam Transportation Through Fringe Field of 70 MeV Compact Cyclotron to Beam Line Targets

Abstract:From the stripping points, the high intensity proton beam of a compact cyclotron travels through the fringe field area of the machine to the combination magnet. Starting from there the beams with various energy is transferred to the switching magnet for distribution to the beam line targets. In the design of the extraction and transport system for the compact proton cyclotron facilities, such as the 70MeV in France and the 100MeV in China, the space charge effect as the beam crosses the fringe field has not been previously considered; neither has the impact on transverse beam envelope coupled from the longitudinal direction. Those have been concerned much more with the higher beam-power because of the beam loss problem. In this paper, based on the mapping data of 70MeV cyclotron including the fringe field by BEST Cyclotron Inc (BEST) and combination magnet field by China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE), the beam extraction and transport are investigated for the 70MeV cyclotron used on the SPES project at Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (INFN–LNL). The study includes the space charge effect and longitudinal and transverse coupling mentioned above, as well as the matching of beam optics using the beam line for medical isotope production as an example. In addition, the designs of the ±45° switching magnets and the 60° bending magnet for the extracted beam with the energy from 35MeV to 70MeV have been made. Parts of the construction and field measurements of those magnets have been done as well. The current result shows that, the design considers the complexity of the compact cyclotron extraction area and fits the requirements of the extraction and transport for high intensity proton beam, especially at mA intensity levels.
Linac4 low energy beam measurements with negative hydrogen ions

Abstract:Linac4, a 160 MeV normal-conducting H(-) linear accelerator, is the first step in the upgrade of the beam intensity available from the LHC proton injectors at CERN. The Linac4 Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) line from the pulsed 2 MHz RF driven ion source, to the 352 MHz RFQ (Radiofrequency Quadrupole) has been built and installed at a test stand, and has been used to transport and match to the RFQ a pulsed 14 mA H(-) beam at 45 keV. A temporary slit-and-grid emittance measurement system has been put in place to characterize the beam delivered to the RFQ. In this paper a description of the LEBT and its beam diagnostics is given, and the results of beam emittance measurements and beam transmission measurements through the RFQ are compared with the expectation from simulations.

Abstract:Abstract An H - ion source is being operated at the new 160 MeV linear injector (Linac4) of the CERN accelerator complex. The source’s plasma is of the Radio Frequency Inductively Coupled Plasma type (RF-ICP), without magnetic cusp and runs with Cs-loss compensation [1]. Vertical downward oriented filter- and electron dump-dipolar magnetic fields expand over the plasma chamber, beam-formation, beam-extraction and electron dump regions and generate horizontal asymmetry and beam angular deflection partially compensated by mechanical alignment of the front-end. The H - beam is generated via volume and caesiated plasma surface modes, the latter inducing a radial asymmetry characterized by an increased current density close to the plasma electrode surface [2]. Asymmetries affecting the meniscus shape, or its current density have to be simulated via 3D Particle In Cell Monte Carlo (PIC-MC) solvers, such as the Orsay Negative Ion eXtraction code (ONIX) [3]. Validation of these simulations require dedicated measurements. This contribution describes experimental methods newly implemented at CERN’s ion source test stand and initial results for Optical and Beam Emission Spectroscopy (OES, BES), emittance and beam profile measurements. In a later stage, the gathered data sets can be compared to source plasma parameters and extracted beam parameters from PIC-MC simulations, once coupled to the Ion Beam Simulation (IBSimu) [4] beam transport code. The experimental parameter space includes RF-power, density of neutrals, position of the RF coil and extraction field. Beams of H - , D - and protons were produced; examples of measured data are presented in this contribution.

Abstract:The development of a high intensity negative ion source is part of a considerably larger activity presently undergoing at CEA Saclay in the field of high intensity linear accelerators. Preliminary studies toward the construction of a 2.45 GHz ECR H- ion source have been performed for few months. This new test bench takes advantage of our experience on the French high intensity proton source SILHI. In the new source, the high-energy electrons created in the ECR zone are trapped by a dipole magnetic filter. A rectangular 200 mm long plasma chamber and an intermediate iron shield are used to minimize the magnetic field in the extraction region. A second magnetic filter separates electrons and negative ions in a 10 kV extraction system. To reduce the electron/H- ratio, the plasma electrode is slightly polarized. The design allows future evolutions such as cesium injection, higher energy extraction and plasma diagnostics. The installation of the source is now in progress. The first helium plasma has been produced for few weeks to verify the electron separator behavior. The design, computations and the first results of the source are presented.

Abstract:The GTS ion source, operated at 14.5GHz , provides multiply charged heavy ion beams for the ARIBE facility at GANIL. The facility variety is limited by the efficiency of the extraction especially in the few keV/q domain. In order to improve the ion source, the extraction system was upgraded numerically using IBSimu. The shape of the plasma and the puller electrodes was changed. It causes the increase of the electric field near the plasma meniscus and allows the use of lower extraction voltages at constant total ion beam current. The required beam parameters were taken from the experimental data. The opportunity of effective low energy beam formation (at a few keV/q or several hundreds eV/q beam energy) was studied. The high current and low energy ion beam production will provide new possibilities for ARIBE facility users.

Status of the Los Alamos heavy ion injector

Abstract:Design of practical induction linacs for intense heavy ion beams requires injection of multiple beams from a pulsed electrostatic accelerator at as high a voltage as practicable. Los Alamos National Laboratory is developing a 16-beam, 2 MeV, pulsed electrostatic accelerator for Al/sup +/ ions in cooperation with the multiple beam ion induction linac development program at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. The ion source will be a pulsed metal vapor arc plasma. Individual sources will be used for each beam. A biased grid will control plasma flux into the ion extraction region. The beams will be accelerated by a series of electrodes with spacing and shape designed to control beam emittance and divergence. The accelerating column will be made of 85% purity aluminum oxide cylinders brazed to niobium high voltage feedthrough rings. The high voltage pulse will be generated by a 2-MV Marx generator with a special circuit designed to control voltage pulse flatness. The Marx generator and the accelerating column will be cantilevered from opposite ends of the containment vessel, which will be pressurized to 65 psig with a 30/60 mixture of SF/sub 6//N/sub 2/. Effects of 2 weeks hypergravity on the composition of the intervertebral disc.

Abstract:BACKGROUND The effects of loading on connective tissues similar to the intervertebral disk have primarily been studied using articular cartilage organ culture in vitro techniques. The effects of in vivo loading on the intervertebral disk are less well documented. METHODS The lumbar annuli of rats centrifuged at 2G for 2 wk were compared with those of similar rats kept under analogous conditions at 1G. The studies involved the water, hydroxyproline (collagen), and uronic acid (proteoglycan, PG) content of the L4-5 and L5-6 annuli. Comparisons were also made between the 2G animals and the previous Cosmos 2044 spaceflight animals at 0G. RESULTS The water content of annuli did not differ between the control and 2G annuli; however, the PG content of the tissue was decreased in the 2G animals and the collagen content slightly increased, resulting in an increased collagen-PG ratio in the 2G animals. When the annuli were immersed in water for 2 h, more PG leached from the annuli of the 2G animals than the control animals, suggesting an alteration in the nature of the PG population comprising the annuli. Interestingly, the direction of changes in the 2G annuli was identical to that of the previous Cosmos 2044 0G animals when they were compared with their respective controls. Therefore, directly opposite experimental conditions (2G and 0G) produced similar results. CONCLUSION Previous studies regarding PG synthesis and content in cartilaginous tissues suggest alterations in intratissue pH and hydration to be among the factors involved in controlling the PG population. If the observed changes are permanent, they may affect the integrity of the intervertebral disk although it is likely they are totally reversible on return to 1G after an interim period, providing injuries are avoided.

Abstract:The structure and preliminary commissioning results of a new 2.45 GHz ECR proton ion source and a dual-lens low energy beam transport (LEBT) system are presented in this paper. The main magnetic field of the ion source is provided by a set of permanent magnets with two small electro-solenoid magnets at the injection and the extraction to fine tune the magnetic field for better microwave coupling. A 50 keV pulsed proton beam extracted by a three-electrode mechanism passes through the LEBT system of length of 1183 mm. This LEBT consists of a diagnosis chamber, two Glaser lenses, two steering magnets, and a final beam defining cone. A set of inner permanent magnetic rings is embedded in each of the two Glaser lenses to produce a flatter axial-field to reduce the lens aberrations.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES The study was designed to investigate the oxidative stress levels of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in stable coronary artery disease (CAD) and to explore the underlying mechanisms of NADPH oxidase activation and subsequent EPCs dysfunction. METHODS EPCs were isolated from patients with stable CAD (n=50) and matched healthy volunteers (n=50). NADPH oxidase activation was detected by measuring the expression of each subunit using western blotting and qPCR analyses and the membrane translocation of p47phox using immunofluorescence. The in vivo angiogenesis capacity was evaluated using immunofluorescence by transplanting EPCs into a rat hind limb ischemia model. The PKC inhibitor GÖ-6983 was used to determine the role of PKC in NADPH oxidase activation. RESULTS Oxidative stress level was increased and the in vivo angiogenesis capacity was impaired in EPCs obtained from CAD subjects with the activation of NADPH oxidase. P47phox membrane translocation increased in CAD group vs controls. These effects were resolved by NADPH oxidase inhibition. Up-regulation of PKCα/β2 was found in EPCs from CAD subjects, PKC inhibition GÖ-6983 could reduce the expression and activity of NADPH oxidation. CONCLUSIONS NADPH oxidase activation via p47phox membrane translocation played a critical role in the initiation and progression of CAD, and the PKCα/β2 signaling pathway might be involved.

Abstract:064<p type="texpara" tag="Body Text" et="abstract" bin="clone" >There are two schools, or lines of thought, that try to unify the apparently divergent laws of dynamics and thermodynamics and to explain the observed time-asymmetry of the universe, and most of its sub-systems, in spite of the fact that these systems are driven by time-symmetric evolution equations. They will be called the coarse-graining and the fine-graining schools (even if these names describe only a part of their philosophy). Coarse-graining school obtains time-asymmetry via a projection of the state space on a space of ''relevant'' states. The corresponding projection of the primitive reversible evolution laws yields effective irreversible evolution laws for the relevant states. Fine-graining always use the same primitive reversible evolution laws. But these laws (in adequate extensions of the usual spaces where these laws are formulated) have a set of solutions $S$ that can be decompose in two subsets $S_{+\text{}}$ and $S_{-}$ of time asymmetric solutions. Choosing one of these two sets, as the arena to formulate the theory, time asymmetry is established. Abstract:Since decades, High Voltage Engineering (HVE) manufactures particle accelerator systems for research and industry. HVE's product line includes Singletron and Tandetron accelerator systems with terminal voltages of up to 6 MV. They are dedicated to a wide range of applications including ion implantation and irradiation, Ion Beam Analysis (IBA), Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS), and neutron reference fields. In this paper, we give an overview of the different positive and negative ion sources that are applied in these systems. We focus especially on the recent development and the performance of a compact 2.45 GHz permanent magnet ECR bipolar ion source (HVE Model SO-160), used for negative light-ion injection into tandem accelerators. It generates high-current, low-emittance light-ion beams at 30 keV energy. The novelty in the design of this ion source is that it combines direct negative extraction for H − with positive extraction for He + that is followed by charge exchange to He − in a Na-based electron donor canal. The source produces in excess of 250 eμA of H − and more than 20 eμA of He − . It is expected the design allows for substantially higher currents, especially for H − .
A High-Intensity H- Linac at CERN Based on LEP-2 Cavities

Abstract:In view of a possible evolution of the CERN accelerator complex towards higher proton intensities, a 2.2 GeV H- linac with 4 MW beam power has been designed, for use in connection with an accumulator and compressor ring as proton driver of a muon-based Neutrino Factory. The high-energy part of this linac can use most of the RF equipment (superconducting cavities and klystrons) from the LEP collider after its decommissioning at the end of 2000. Recent results concerning low-beta superconducting cavities are presented, and the main characteristics of the linac design are described. The complete linac-based proton driver facility is outlined, and the impact on the linac design of the requirements specific to a Neutrino Factory is underlined.

Abstract:A set of new ion extraction electrodes have been designed for the permanent magnetic electron cyclotron resonance ion source at Peking University to improve beam quality and transmission. PBGUNS has been used to optimize the extraction electrodes and simulate the beam behavior at the extraction region. The experiments showed that with the new system, the beam half divergence angle can be less than 40 mrad and the normalized rms emittance is about 0.13 pi mm mrad when the extracted current is 100 mA at 50 keV in pulse mode. The voltage of the suppression electrode has great effect on beam divergence. The effect of the microwave power and gas flow is also studied.

Abstract:The SSC-LINAC project is launched at Institute of Modern Physics in China to develop one new linear accelerator (LINAC) injector for separated sector cyclotron (SSC). It includes a high charge state ion source, a CW RFQ and a DTL section, and is designed to accelerate ions up to 580keV/u. Now the ion source and the RFQ cavity have been installed in the main hall and the beam commissioning has been carried out. Two kinds of ions have been tested, 16O5+ and 40Ar8+. The experiment result of 16O5+ is: the measured beam current is 180μA at entrance of RFQ and 150μA at exit of RFQ. The output energy of 16O5+ is 141.89keV/u. The measured beam current is 210μA at entrance of RFQ and 198μA at exit of RFQ for 40Ar8+. The output energy of 40Ar8+ is 142.78keV/u. The experiment results agree with the design parameters of RFQ very well. This paper presents: the design consideration of beam dynamics, RF and cooling structure design; measurement of the cold model; high power test of RFQ and beam commissioning result.
DESIGN OF AN L-BAND RF PHOTOINJECTOR FOR THE IDAHO ACCELERATOR CENTER 44 MeV LINAC

Abstract:At the Idaho Accelerator Center (IAC) of Idaho State University, we have been operating a 44 MeV L-band RF (1300 MHz) linear accelerator (LINAC) for various user applications such as medical isotope production, Laser Compton Scattering (LCS), positron annihilation energy spectroscopy, and photo fission [1]. But the LINAC is not optimized properly to supply high quality electron beam for those experiments due to limitations of an existing 85 kV thermionic DC gun. In the near future, we are planning to use the L-band LINAC for new user applications such as Accelerator Driven subcritical nuclear reactor System (ADS), photon tagging facility, Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (UED) facility [2], and high power coherent Terahertz light source facility. Therefore, recently, we have been studying a future upgrade of the L-band LINAC with an RF photoinjector using ASTRA code [3]. In this paper, we describe ASTRA simulation results and a new layout of the L-band LINAC, which is based on an L-band 1.5 cell RF photoinjector. Then, we describe its expected performance for two different single bunch charges (1 nC and 5 nC).

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the design choices and construction strategy of the tapered undulator system designed for a high energy extraction efficiency experiment in the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum planned for installation at the Argonne National Laboratory Linac Extension Area (LEA) beamline. The undulator is comprised of 4 sections pure permanent magnet Halbach array separated by short break sections, each one of them housing a focusing quadrupole doublet and a phase shifter. The quadrupoles use a novel hybrid design which allows one to vary the gradient and match the beam transversely. The undulator tapering profile is optimized to maximize the energy conversion efficiency from a 343 MeV 1 kA beam into coherent 257.5 nm radiation taking into account the longitudinal current profile generated by the linac.
A Principled Framework for Constructing Natural Language Interfaces To Temporal Databases

Abstract:Most existing natural language interfaces to databases (NLIDBs) were designed to be used with ``snapshot'' database systems, that provide very limited facilities for manipulating time-dependent data. Consequently, most NLIDBs also provide very limited support for the notion of time. The database community is becoming increasingly interested in _temporal_ database systems. These are intended to store and manipulate in a principled manner information not only about the present, but also about the past and future. This thesis develops a principled framework for constructing English NLIDBs for _temporal_ databases (NLITDBs), drawing on research in tense and aspect theories, temporal logics, and temporal databases. I first explore temporal linguistic phenomena that are likely to appear in English questions to NLITDBs. Drawing on existing linguistic theories of time, I formulate an account for a large number of these phenomena that is simple enough to be embodied in practical NLITDBs. Exploiting ideas from temporal logics, I then define a temporal meaning representation language, TOP, and I show how the HPSG grammar theory can be modified to incorporate the tense and aspect account of this thesis, and to map a wide range of English questions involving time to appropriate TOP expressions. Finally, I present and prove the correctness of a method to translate from TOP to TSQL2, TSQL2 being a temporal extension of the SQL-92 database language. This way, I establish a sound route from English questions involving time to a general-purpose temporal database language, that can act as a principled framework for building NLITDBs. To demonstrate that this framework is workable, I employ it to develop a prototype NLITDB, implemented using ALE and Prolog.

Abstract:A superconducting 166.6 MHz quarter-wave beta=1 cavity was recently proposed for the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS), a 6 GeV kilometer-scale light source. Four 166.6 MHz cavities will be used for main acceleration in the newly planned on-axis beam injection scheme realized by a double-frequency RF system. The fundamental frequency, 166.6 MHz, was dictated by the fast injection kicker technology and the preference of using 499.8 MHz SC RF cavity as the third harmonic. Each 166.6 MHz cavity will be operated at 4.2 K providing 1.2 MV accelerating voltage and 150 kW of power to the electron beam. The input coupler will use single-window coaxial type graded up to 200 kW CW power. Each cavity will be equipped with a 200 kW solid-state amplifier and digital low-level RF system. This paper describes the 166.6 MHz RF system with a focus on the design and optimization of the RF cavity and its ancillaries, the LLRF system and the status of the solid-state amplifiers.
[Risk factors associated with invasive fungal infection in orthotopic liver transplantation].

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Invasive fungal infection (IFI) in orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) influences survival, hence the need for risk predictors. We have determined the incidence and risk factors associated with invasive fungal infection in OLT. PATIENTS AND METHOD 165 OLTs performed in 152 receptors from May 1994 to May 1998 at the Hospital Juan Canalejo (La Coruña), were included in the study. Pre-surgical, surgical and post-surgical variables were evaluated. Those variables that independently influenced the development of IFI were determined by multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS IFI presented in 7 cases /152 patients (4.6%). In the univariate analysis, IFI was associated with pre-transplantation serum albumin, the number of blood units transfused, mechanical ventilation (OR = 7.56), re-transplantation (OR = 11.10) cytomegalovirus infection (OR = 8.35) and pre-transplantation GOT. In the multivariate analysis, the independent variables predicting IFI were the number of blood units transfused (OR = 1.21; 95% CI, 1.05-1.38), serum albumin pre-transplantation (OR = 0.06; 95% CI, 0.007-0.537) and re-transplantation (HR = 432; 95% CI, 9.80-19 058). CONCLUSIONS Pre-transplantation serum albumin, a clear predictor, the number of blood units transfused and re-transplantation are all independent predictors of IFI.
