Abstract:The potential prospect of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) in the fields of polymer composites is severely limited by undesirable exfoliation efficiency and chemical inertness. Herein, bio-based dopamine was employed toward exfoliating bulk h-BN with hydrogen bond action and imparting a highly-active surface. With assistance of polypodamine, SnO2 nanoparticles were in-situ synthesized and strengthened the interfacial interaction between h-BN and epoxy (EP) matrix. The integrated function of metal oxide/h-BN toward flame retardant and smoke suppression of polymer materials was firstly studied and obtained, in term of reduced peak heat release rate (decreased by 41.1%), lower total heat release (decreased by 30.1%), and suppressed total smoke production (decreased by 21.6%). In addition, the mechanism for enhancements on flame retardant and smoke suppression of EP composites was systematically investigated. Such a design route simultaneously achieves the exfoliation and functionalization of h-BN, thus offering an active platform for further functionalization modification.

Abstract:In this study, h-BN@PDA@TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles were prepared and used as functional fillers to prepare PVA nanocomposites, and the effects of hybrid particles on PVA thermal conductivity and flame retardant properties were studied. The results showed that hybrid particles could significantly improve the thermal conductivity and flame retardant performance of PVA composites, and effectively inhibit the release of toxic gases such as combustible pyrolysis products and CO, which enhanced the fire safety of PVA composites. When the addition amount of hybrid particles is 5 wt%, the thermal conductivity of PVA composites is 239.1% higher than that of the pure PVA and the corresponding temperature of PVA composites with a mass loss of 5 wt% was 16.2°C higher than that of the pure PVA. This is due to the barrier effect of h-BN and the protective effect of dense carbon layer catalyzed by TiO2.

Abstract:Thermal conductive polymeric composites are becoming more and more important in the rapid development of new generation electronic equipment, which can quickly dissipate the heat generated by the equipment to ensure their stable operation with high reliability. Nowadays, the most effective way to prepare thermal conductive polymeric composites is to incorporate efficient thermal conductive fillers into polymers. However, the large thermal resistance at interfaces and degradation of mechanical properties arising from the large filler content restrict their practical applications. Herein, surface modification of BNNS by polydopamine (PDA) was carried out to improve the interfacial compatibility and interaction between fillers and <a class="topic-link" href="/topics/materials-science/polymer-matrix">polymer matrix</a>, a simple doctor blading method was adopted to prepare PVA <a class="topic-link" href="/topics/materials-science/composite-films">composite films</a> with an aligned structure. In addition, the decoration of silver nanoparticles on BNNS surface and the addition of small amount of GO can help to promote the continuity and reduce the defect of the filler skeleton. Thus, an increase in <a class="topic-link" href="/topics/materials-science/thermal-conductivity">thermal conductivity</a> (in-plane: 6.54 W m−1 K−1, through-plane: 1.03 W m−1 K−1) was observed in PVA/BNNS-PDA-Ag (10 wt%)/GO (0.5 wt%) composite film, which also possessed excellent flexibility and a favorable mechanical property of 97.1 ± 5.1 MPa.

Abstract:The design of CNT/polymer composite shields is reduced to resolve the issue of CNTs agglomeration which has been tackled by complex and harsh chemical treatments damaging their electrical conductivity and limiting shielding capability. Herein, CNTs were coated with polydopamine (PDA) by exploiting the in-situ spontaneous polymerization of PDA on organic/inorganic surfaces. The PDA functional layer not only resulted in improved CNT dispersion after 2 h-coating time but also served as a platform for subsequent immobilization of silver nanoparticles by the catechol and nitrogen-containing groups of PDA. The well-dispersed CNT and the incor-poration of extra silver particles conductive phase resulted in flexible and highly conductive Ag@PDA@CNT-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films with significantly improved shielding effectiveness of 42.75 dB with respect to pristine CNTs (21 dB). The size of silver particles controlled by PDA polymerization time, the formation of an efficient conductive network and conduction/interfacial polarization-induced loss mechanisms were reasoned to be responsible for dictating the films shielding performance. Such low-key and green approach could be instrumental to developing other metal/CNT polymer films as next-generation lightweight shields for flexible electronics.

Abstract:Hydrophobic polydopamine (HPDA) nanoparticles were prepared by surface modification of polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles to improve their dispersion in hydrophobic polymer matrix. Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT)/HPDA with well dispersed HPDA nanoparticles were prepared through solution coagulation. The mechanical properties of PBAT were reinforced efficiently with Young's modulus improved by more than twice at loading of 5 wt %. PBAT/HPDA composite films exhibited excellent UV-shielding performance even with only 0.5 wt % HPDA loading.

Abstract:Polydopamine‐modified BN enhances the thermal conductivity of poly(aryl ether nitrile ketone) resin. The rapid advancement of energy, electronic, and microelectronic technology has resulted in a surge of interest in the study of functional composites. One of the current hotspots in this field is the exploitation of polymer composites with excellent thermal conductivity and great thermal stability. Based upon the composition of the adhesion proteins of shellfish, dopamine chemistry was applied to the non‐chemical surface modification of chemically inert fillers by generating polydopamine (PDA) films on their surfaces. In this paper, we utilized poly(aryl ether nitrile ketone) (PEK‐CN) resin as matrix and DA modified boron nitride (BN) as filler to prepare BN@PDA/PEK‐CN composites by hot‐pressing method. The thermal conductivity and thermal stability of the composites for a given BN loading can be enhanced by surface functionalization of BN. The composites based on 30%BN@PDA/PEK‐CN exhibited a through‐plane thermal conductivity (λ⊥) of 0.941 Wm−1 K−1, upward 275% from a pure resin matrix and higher than that of the untreated 30 wt% BN/PEK‐CN composites (0.713 Wm−1 K−1). The Heat resistance index (THRI) of 30% BN@PDA/PEK‐CN was subsequently raised to 329.8°C. Overall, our developed BN@PDA/PEK‐CN composites exhibit favorable thermal conductivity along with remarkable thermal stability, making them highly promising for utilization in electronic packaging applications. Highlights BN@PDA/PEK‐CN were prepared via a DA self‐polymerization bionic mussel strategy. Thermal conductivity (λ⊥) increased to 0.941 Wm−1 K−1 for 30% BN@PDA/PEK‐CN. The THRI increased to 329.8°C, with an increase of 61.1°C.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of a novel core-satellite-structured BaTiO3-poly(dopamine)-silver (BT-PDA-Ag) nanoparticle for improving dielectric properties of nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) nanocomposites. The BT-PDA-Ag nanoparticles are synthesized by dopamine oxidative polymerization and electroless plating of silver. The Ag nanoparticles decorated on the BT nanoparticles enhanced the dielectric constant of NBR nanocomposites due to the increased conductivity of the filler/matrix interlayer and nanocapacitor structure. In addition, the incorporation of the BT nanoparticles prevented the continuous connection of Ag nanoparticles and suppressed the formation of a conductive path in the NBR matrix. Moreover, the ultrasmall Ag nanoparticles trapped the carriers by Coulomb blockade and quantum confinement effects, which results in low dielectric loss and electrical conductivity of nanocomposites. The proposed method with simplicity and scalability can be adapted to process high-dielectric polymer nanocomposites.
Hydrophobic and Chemically Bonded BNNSs@PDA/ODA Nanosheets to Enhance the Protective Properties of Silicone-Epoxy Coatings on 2024 Al-alloy

Abstract:In the challenging marine environment, organic coatings often fail to provide long-lasting protection. This study presents a novel approach for synthesizing multifunctional nano-pigments by utilizing hydrophobic and chemically bonded BNNSs@PDA/ODA nanosheets. The synthesis involves anchoring polydopamine (PDA) onto boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs), followed by grafting octadecyl amine (ODA). This dual modification effectively prevents agglomeration of BNNSs and enhances their adhesion with silicone-epoxy resins at the interface. Comprehensive characterization confirms the successful grafting of ODA onto PDA-modified BN nanosheets, significantly improving the barrier properties of coatings. Remarkably, after immersing in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 75 days, the composite coating BNNSs@PDA/ODA-SE exhibits an impedance modulus (|Z|(0.01Hz)) of 10(10) Omega cm(2) at low frequency, surpassing that of pure SE coating by nearly three orders of magnitude. The superior protective performance of the composite coating can be attributed to the synergistic effect between the physical barrier generated by BNNSs, insoluble complexes formed by Al3+-PDA, and the high hydrophobic surface network provided by ODA.
Regulation and prediction of the dielectric constant and interfacial binding energy of surface modified hexagonal boron nitride/polyphenylene oxide@cyanate ester resin

Abstract:Flow chart of h‐BN/PPO@BADCy preparation. Particulate‐filled materials with superior mechanical properties and wave permeability have received extensive research attention in the military industry. To elucidate the role of reinforcement in polymers, γ‐Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) is used to modify hexagonal boron nitride (h‐BN) nanoparticles, which are then filled into polyphenylene oxide@bisphenol A dicyanate ester composite, exhibiting a 1.46‐fold increase in flexural strength and a dielectric constant of 2.66 at 12 GHz. Finite element analysis is employed to design composite material models, successfully predicting the dielectric properties of composites at different frequencies and reinforcement filling levels. The change in the interface energy induced by the silane coupling agent is quantitatively calculated by molecular dynamics simulation, demonstrating that the modified nanoparticles are conducive to improving the flexural strength. Overall, the predicted dielectric and mechanical properties of composites can be utilized to screen for composites that possess excellent dielectric and mechanical properties, thereby greatly improving efficiency. Highlights A hexagonal boron nitride/polyphenylene oxide@cyanate ester is prepared. Finite element analysis is employed to predict the dielectric properties. Abstract:Flexible and highly filled conductive polymer composites with strong mechanical properties are highly desirable as electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and thermally conductive materials for human protection and wearable devices. Herein, a tough interface has been built up by the combination of polydopamine modification and pH triggered hydrogen bonding to prepare flexible and mechanically robust waterborne polyacrylate/ composites. Graphene was modified with polydopamine via an in-situ polymerization method. By adjusting the initial pH value in the film formation process, the transition from electrostatic repulsion to hydrogen bonding between and polyacrylate was engineered for improving the mechanical properties. At optimal pH value, the maximum tensile strength of the composite is enhanced by 137% compared with that of neat polymer matrix. Moreover, the composite with filler loading of 20 wt% exhibits an EMI shielding effectiveness of 58 dB at 0.6 mm thickness and thermal conductivity of 1.68 W/m·K, respectively. The practical application of the composite film and composite coated leather also demonstrates their outstanding flexibility, EMI shielding, and heat dissipation performance, indicating their excellent potential as EMI shielding and thermally conductive materials in wide areas such as wearable devices, telecommunication systems, and human protection.

Abstract:Flexible P‐BN@LM/PDMS composites with excellent thermal conductivity and superior mechanical properties. Hexagonal boron nitride (h‐BN) has a layered lattice structure, high intrinsic thermal conductivity, and good chemical stability, and it has a promising applications in thermal management materials. However, poor interfacial compatibility and dispersion of BN flakes in the polymer matrix cause thermal contact resistance and gaps, directly impairing the performance of the composites and limiting their thermal conduction applications. Herein, the P‐BN@LM/PDMS thermally conductive composites with superior mechanical properties were fabricated by incorporating dopamine and liquid metal (LM) into BN flakes. The dopamine self‐polymerizes to form polydopamine (PDA) on the BN surface, denoted as P‐BN, which effectively improves interface compatibility and dispersion. The LM attaches to the functionalized P‐BN surface by mechanical grinding, acting as a bridge between adjacent BN flakes to enhance the integrity of the thermal conductive network within the composites. The coordination between P‐BN and LM increases interface strength, effectively improving mechanical performance. Hence, the P‐BN@LM/PDMS composites exhibit excellent thermal conductivity (4.0 W/mK) and an enhancement factor of 1373%, which is 2.22 times that of BN/PDMS composites with the same 30 wt% loading. Additionally, the composite shows superior tensile strength (2.11 MPa) and elongation at break (121%), representing 441% and 203% improvements compared with pure polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The P‐BN@LM/PDMS composites, with significant advantages in thermal conductivity and mechanical properties, are promising for future applications as flexible thermal interface materials in thermal management. Highlights The P‐BN@LM/PDMS composites exhibit excellent thermal conductivity (4.0 W/mK) and an enhancement factor of 1373%, making them promising for future applications as flexible thermal interface materials in thermal management. The P‐BN@LM/PDMS composites present a superior tensile strength (2.11 MPa) and elongation at break (121%). PDA formed by the self‐polymerization of dopamine on the BN surface effectively enhances interfacial compatibility and dispersion. Abstract:To develop thermally conductive PA6 composites with the aim of decreasing filler content, structure-complexed fillers were fabricated. This research presented an effective approach by noncovalent functionalization of poly(dopamine) (PDA) followed by silver nanoparticles decoration to fabricate 3-dimensional (3-D) structured boron nitride hybrids (BN@PDA@AgNPs). BN hybrids were then introduced into PA6 to prepare thermally conductive PA6 composites. The results demonstrated that PA6/BN hybrids (PMB) composites exhibited higher thermal conducivity compared with PA6/BN composites, which revealed more effective construction of thermal conductive network in the composites with the addition of 3-D structured fillers. The effects of BN hybrids with different loadings on thermal stability, mechanical property, as well as electrical resistance of the composites were also analyzed. Overall, the prepared PMB composites exhibited outstanding performance in thermal conductivity, thermal stability, mechanical property, while retaining good electrical insulating property, which showed a potential application in electronic packaging fields. Synthesis of PDA-BN@f-Al2O3 hybrid for nanocomposite epoxy coating with superior corrosion protective properties

Abstract:A novel PDA-BN@f-Al2O3 nanohybrid was synthesized by depositing Al2O3 nanoparticles modified with γ -Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) on the surface of hexagonal boron-nitride (h-BN) sheets covered with polydopamine (PDA). Then, PDA-BN@f-Al2O3 hybrids was dispersed in epoxy resin to prepare composite coating samples. Many characterizations revealed that the functionalized Al2O3 successfully deposited on the surface of PDA-BN platelets and PDA-BN@f-Al2O3 hybrids showed good dispersibility in the epoxy resin, and the interfacial adhesion between hybrids and epoxy matrix was improved. Furthermore, the effects of Al2O3, h-BN and various mixtures of PDA-BN@f-Al2O3 hybrids at a low weight fraction of 1 % on the corrosion resistance of epoxy coating were studied by electrochemical measurement and salt spray test. The potentiodynamic polarization test revealed that PDA-BN@f-Al2O3 hybrids have a corrosion inhibitive performance. Moreover, the coating resistance of PDA-BN@f-Al2O3 (3:1)/epoxy was enhanced by three orders of magnitude compared with neat epoxy after 5 d immersion. This study provides a promising application prospect for the development of superior metal protective organic coatings.

Abstract:Polymer bonded explosives (PBXs) have weak strength and toughness, as well as they are prone to fracture under stress. To overcome these disadvantages, inspired by the strong adhesion of mussels and the hierarchical structure of nacre, we designed and fabricated novel PBX composites by coating three explosive crystals (2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide, LLM-105; 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene, TATB; and 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane, HMX) with polydopamine (PDA), respectively. The results of mechanical analysis and in situ small angle neutron scattering measurements showed that these novel PBX composites exhibited higher strength, stronger toughness, and higher creep resistance, and higher microstructural thermal stability simultaneously, compared to PBXs without multiple bio-inspired designs. Contact angles measurements indicated that the interfacial interaction intensities between energetic crystals and polymer binder could be largely enhanced by PDA coating on energetic crystals. Theoretical calculations revealed that PDA-modified PBX-LLM-105 achieved the most increment in mechanical strength, which were well consistent with the experiments. An enhancement mechanism combining the van der Waals forces, π–π interaction, and hydrogen bonds, as well as surface roughness was proposed to account for the variety of mechanical properties and microstructural thermal stability of PDA-modified PBXs. The results revealed in this study are commonly significant to interfacial modification and performance enhancement of materials.

Abstract:As a mussel-inspired material, polydopamine (PDA), possesses many properties, such as a simple preparation process, good biocompatibility, strong adhesive property, easy functionalization, outstanding photothermal conversion efficiency, and strong quenching effect. PDA has attracted increasingly considerable attention because it provides a simple and versatile approach to functionalize material surfaces for obtaining a variety of multifunctional nanomaterials. In this review, recent significant research developments of PDA including its synthesis and polymerization mechanism, physicochemical properties, different nano/microstructures, and diverse applications are summarized and discussed. For the sections of its applications in surface modification and biomedicine, we mainly highlight the achievements in the past few years (2016–2019). The remaining challenges and future perspectives of PDA-based nanoplatforms are discussed rationally at the end. This timely and overall review should be desirable for a wide range of scientists and facilitate further development of surface coating methods and the production of PDA-based materials.

Here, Ni nanoparticles (about 50-90 nm) were decorated onto the surface of polydopamine (PDA) coated BaTiO3 nanowires to synthesize Ni@ polydopamine@BaTiO3 nanowires (Ni@PDA@BT NWs, also denoted as NPB) with different Ni loading amount The nanowires were then added into poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP)) matrix and composite films were prepared. The dielectric performance of composite films is largely enhanced owing to the microcapacitor effect and interfacial polarization effect induced by Ni nanoparticles. This enhancement can be improved by increasing the loading amount of Ni. Crystallization behavior of the films were also investigated. With 20 vol% of Ni@PDA@BT NWs added, the dielectric constant of the composite film reaches 48.4 at 1 kHz, in contrast to 29.5 for 20 vol% of BT and 10.6 for pristine P(VDF-HFP). And the dielectric loss tangent remains at a low level of 0.23 at 1 kHz. These composite films exhibit potential for applications in flexible electronic devices and electrical systems.
Surface Modification of Boron Nitride by Bio‐inspired Polydopamine and Different Chain Length Polyethylenimine Co‐depositing

Abstract:We established a novel, easy, and versatile method of obtaining diverse and controllable interphases between epoxy resin and fillers. The method involved the co‐deposition of polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) with different molecular lengths on boron nitride (BN) surface. The obtained PDA/PEI‐modified BN composites showed significantly improved mechanical properties, including tensile strength, toughness, and elongation at break. For example, the tensile strength, fracture toughness, and elongation at break of EP composite increased by 51%, 132%, and 170% compared with EP when the PEI molecular weight was 10 000, respectively. These results suggested that the interphases between BN and EP matrix can be adjusted by changing the molecular lengths of grafted modifiers, thereby offering a new method for the reasonable designing and exploitation of the BN‐based composite materials.
Enhanced Thermal Conductivity of Benzoxazine Nanocomposites Based on Non-Covalent Functionalized Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Abstract:High thermal conductivity composites with ideal electrical properties have a wide potential application of electronic packaging systems in aerospace, electrical and electronic fields. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has been widely used in heat conduction systems due to its good insulation and thermally conductivity. However, its application has been limited due to its surface inertness and low strength. In this work, dopamine (DA) was used to provide a polymer coating (PDA) in the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) surface to improve its uniform dispersion and interfacial compatibility in the polymer matrix (A-ph/CE). Polymer nanocomposites with different nanofiller loadings were prepared by simple curing casting procedure. Among them, the thermal conductivity of A-ph/CE/h-BN@PDA nanocomposites with 20 wt% h-BN@PDA increases to 0.71 W/m.K. The thermal conductivity of nanocomposites was predicted by using the classical equation Agari model. With the nanofiller amounts increasing, the thermal stability of the nanocomposites also improved. The thermal decomposition and T-g with A-ph/CE/h-BN@PDA nanocomposites with 20 wt% h-BN@PDA increase to 350.8 degrees C and 339.9 degrees C, respectively. And its dynamic storage modulus reaches 7390 Mpa. And the prepared composites had ideal dielectric properties. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of 20 wt% A-ph/CE/h-BN@PDA nanocomposites at 1000 Hz were 5.72 and 0.0148 respectively, the volume resistivity was 4.08 x 108 O cm, and dielectric breakdown strength was 61.6 kV/mm. The nanofiller (h-BN@PDA) reinforced polymer nanocomposites (A-ph/CE/h-BN@PDA) prepared in this work has good thermal conductivity, ideal electrical properties, and excellent thermal stability, etc., which has great potentiality in the demanding field of electronic packaging.
Construction of polydopamine functionalized porous carbon network structure in polymer composites for excellent mechanical and electromagnetic interference shielding properties

Abstract:Structural and functional integrated lightweight polymer-based composites with excellent mechanical and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties are urgently demanded in the field of advanced aerospace field. Effective design to construct the interfacial porous microstructures is crucial yet remains highly challenging for maximum EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) while improving the strength of composites. Herein, novel interfacial continuous network structures are constructed based on the in-suit synthesis of porous carbon network on the carbon fibers and chemical functionalized with polydopamine (PDA) to achieve simultaneous improvement of mechanical properties and EMI SE. Results indicate that the construction of active porous carbon networks significantly improves the surface activity and wettability of carbon fibers, which is conducive to enhancing the interfacial strength of the composites. Owing to the synergistic effect of physical enhancement for porous carbon and chemical reinforcement for PDA, the bending strength of the modified composite reaches 138.9 MPa, and the wear rate decreases by 82.9 %, demonstrating excellent mechanical properties. It is worth noting that the EMI SE reaches more than 62 dB in the X-band when the thickness of the modified composite is only 0.4 mm, showing excellent EMI shielding performance. Most importantly, this study provides solid basic knowledge of the interfacial structure design of composites, which is favorable for obtaining expected mechanical and EMI shielding performances and offers strong potential for applications in structural components of the aerospace and electronic equipment field.

Abstract:Polydopamine (PDA), recognized for its exceptional adhesion and high-temperature resistance, serves as an effective sizing agent in demanding composite material production. This study explores the application of PDA as an interface adhesive for carbon fiber-reinforced high-temperature phthalonitrile (PN) composites (CFRPN), assessing the effects of two PDA synthesis methods—electrochemical and solution oxidation—on interfacial modification. The electrochemical method uniformly fills grooves on CF surfaces, creating an optimal interface layer, yet it encounters challenges in bulk, multi-layer fiber processing. Conversely, the solution oxidation method, despite less uniform PDA distribution, exhibits greater consistency in batch processing and significantly enhances the interlaminar shear strength of CFRPN, outperforming the electrochemical method in mechanical enhancements. Given its simplicity and reduced equipment requirements, the solution oxidation method offers considerable potential for broader engineering applications.
