Abstract:In this letter, we give a simple and analytical solution to the twin paradox. It relies just on Lorentz transformations and does not involve accelerated frames or any kind of signals exchanged between the twins. We expect that with this we can put a dead end to this century-old problem.

Abstract:We discuss the twin paradox or the clock paradox under the small velocity approximation of special relativity. In this paper the traveller twin of the standard twin parable sets out with a non-relativistic speed for the trip leaving behind the stay-at-home one on earth and continues up to a distance and finally returns home with the same speed when the siblings can compare their ages or their initially synchronized wrist watches. The common knowledge that at small velocities the length contraction and time dilation effects of special relativity can be ignored so that the world becomes essentially classical, tends to lead to a paradox in connection with the twin problem, which a "clever" student eventually discovers. After discussing and resolving the issue, some more related paradoxes have been presented. The resolution of all these problems provides some additional insight into the century old paradox.

Abstract:The thought experiment (called the clock paradox or the twin paradox)proposed by Langevin in 1911 of two observers, one staying on Earth and the other making a trip toward a star with a velocity near the light velocity is very well known for its surprising result. When the traveler comes back, he is younger that the stay on Earth. This astonishing situation deduced from the theory of Special relativity sparked a huge amount of articles, discussions and controversies such it remains a particular phenomenon probably unique in Physics. We propose to study it. First we looked for the simplest solutions when one can observe that the published solutions correspond in fact to two different versions of the experiment. It appears that the complete and simple solution of Moller is neglected for complicated methods with dubious validity. We propose to interpret this avalanche of works by the difficulty to accept the conclusions of the Special Relativity, in particular the difference in times indicated by two clocks, one immobile and the second moving and finally stopping. We also suggest that the name "twin paradox" is maybe related to some subconscious idea concerning conflict between twins as it can be found in the Bible and in several mythologies

Abstract:The twin paradox is the best known thought experiment associated with Einstein's theory of relativity. An astronaut who makes a journey into space in a high-speed rocket will return home to find he has aged less than a twin who stayed on Earth. This result appears puzzling, since the situation seems symmetrical, as the homebody twin can be considered to have done the travelling with respect to the traveller. Hence it is called a "paradox". In fact, there is no contradiction and the apparent paradox has a simple resolution in Special Relativity with infinite flat space. In General Relativity (dealing with gravitational fields and curved space-time), or in a compact space such as the hypersphere or a multiply connected finite space, the paradox is more complicated, but its resolution provides new insights about the structure of spacetime and the limitations of the equivalence between inertial reference frames.

This paper presents a simple, exact resolution using only special relativity and the equivalence principle. Two earlier approximate solutions are considered, along with some background review to render the article self-contained. It is hoped that this material will be suitable for classroom instruction.

In order to be a most comfortable journey the voyaging twin accelerates with Earth's gravity. We developed some Java applets to visualize what both twins could really measure, namely time signals and light coming from the surrounding sky.

Abstract:In this article, we present several apparent paradoxes of special relativity and their respective solutions. These paradoxes have appeared since the advent of relativity in 1905, and in fact they are never paradoxes. From a didactic point of view, paradoxes are an excellent learning tool. They lead the student to confront, and abandon, several central concepts of Galilean theory, such as simultaneity and rigidity of extended bodies. In particular, we review a new and simple solution to the twin paradox, recently found by one of the present authors [1]. It does not need to consider reference accelerators or light signals, which are the solutions presented in the literature.

Abstract:In 1905 Einstein presented the Clock Paradox and in 1911 Paul Langevin expanded Einstein's result to human observers, the "Twin Paradox." I will explain the crucial difference between Einstein and Langevin. Einstein did not present the so-called "Twin Paradox." Later Einstein continued to speak about the clock paradox. Einstein might not have been interested in the question: what happens to the observers themselves. The reason for this could be the following; Einstein dealt with measurement procedures, clocks and measuring rods. Einstein's observers were measuring time with these clocks and measuring rods. Einstein might not have been interested in so-called biology of the observers, whether these observers were getting older, younger, or whether they have gone any other changes; these changes appeared to be out of the scope of his "Principle of relativity" or kinematics. The processes and changes occurring within observers seemed to be good for philosophical discussions. Later writers criticized Einstein's clock paradox. Einstein quickly replied with witty, smart and clever retorts.

Abstract:This article revisits the historiography of the problem of inertial frames. Specifically, the case of the twins in the clock paradox is considered to see that some resolutions implicitly assume inertiality for the non-accelerating twin. If inertial frames are explicitly identified by motion with respect to the large scale structure of the universe, it makes it possible to consider the relative inertiality of different frames.

Abstract:We analyse a little known aspect of the Klein paradox. A Klein-Gordon boson appears to be able to cross a supercritical rectangular barrier without being reflected, while spending there a negative amount of time. The transmission mechanism is demonstrably acausal, yet an attempt to construct the corresponding causal solution of the Klein-Gordon equation fails. We relate the causal solution to a divergent multiple-reflections series, and show that the problem is remedied for a smooth barrier, where pair production at the energy equal to a half of the barrier's height is enhanced yet remains finite.

Can parallel lives provide a solution to Hardy's paradox?

Abstract:Parallel lives is a model which provides an interpretation of quantum theory that is both local and realistic. This model assumes that all quantum fields are composed of point beings called "lives". Lives interact locally and have a memory of their previous interactions. The reduction of the state vector is not included in this model: lives can be divided into different worlds. This feature resembles many worlds interpretation. However in the parallel lives model, the division of lives into different worlds takes place locally. The parallel lives model is expected to be compatible with special relativity, as the lives propagate at a speed that does not exceed the speed of light and interact locally. On the other hand, it is open to paradoxes based on counterfactual propositions, as it provides a realistic interpretation of quantum theory. In this paper, we confront the parallel lives model with the paradox proposed by Hardy. We show that the parallel lives model cannot overcome the dilemma in Hardy's paradox. We discuss implications of this confrontation on special theory of relativity, and speculate a solution that we believe, fits the spirit of the parallel lives model.

A Simple Relativity Solution to the Bell Spaceship Paradox

Abstract:The Bell Spaceship Paradox has promoted confusion and numerous resolutions since its first statement in 1959, including resolutions based on relativistic stress due to Lorentz contractions. The paradox is that two ships, starting from the same reference frame and subject to the same acceleration, would snap a string that connected them, even as their separation distance would not change as measured from the original reference frame. This paper uses a Simple Relativity approach to resolve the paradox and explain both why the string snaps, and how to adjust accelerations to avoid snapping the string. In doing so, an interesting parallel understanding of the Lorentz contraction is generated. The solution is applied to rotation to address the Ehrenfest paradox and orbital precession as well.

Abstract:The phase of matter waves depends on proper time and is therefore susceptible to special-relativistic (kinematic) and gravitational (redshift) time dilation. Hence, it is conceivable that atom interferometers measure general-relativistic time-dilation effects. In contrast to this intuition, we show: (i.) Closed light-pulse interferometers without clock transitions during the pulse sequence are not sensitive to gravitational time dilation in a linear potential. (ii.) They can constitute a quantum version of the special-relativistic twin paradox. (iii.) Our proposed experimental geometry for a quantum-clock interferometer isolates this effect.

Time-Symmetric Resolutions of the Renninger Negative-Result Paradoxes

Abstract:The 1953 and 1960 Renninger negative-result thought experiments illustrate conceptual paradoxes in the Copenhagen formulation of quantum mechanics. In the 1953 paradox we can infer the presence of a detector in one arm of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer without any particle interacting with the detector. In the 1960 paradox we can infer the collapse of a wavefunction without any change in the state of a detector. I resolve both of these paradoxes by using a time-symmetric formulation of quantum mechanics. I also describe a real experiment that can distinguish between the Copenhagen and time-symmetric formulations.

Abstract:The gedanken experiment of the clock paradox is solved exactly using the general relativistic equations for a static homogeneous gravitational field. We demonstrate that the general and special relativistic clock paradox solutions are identical and in particular that they are identical for finite acceleration. Practical expressions are obtained for proper time and coordinate time by using the destination distance as the key observable parameter. This solution provides a formal demonstration of the identity between the special and general relativistic clock paradox with finite acceleration and where proper time is assumed to be the same in both formalisms. By solving the equations of motion for a freely falling clock in a static homogeneous field elapsed times are calculated for realistic journeys to the stars.

Abstract:Teleparallel gravity models, in which the curvature and the nonmetricity of spacetime are both set zero, are widely studied in the literature. We work a different teleparallel theory, in which the curvature and the torsion of spacetime are both constrained to zero, but the nonmetricity is nonzero. After reformulating the general relativity in this spacetime we find a solution and investigate its singularity structure.

Abstract:Since Stephen Hawking's original 1975 paper on black hole evaporation, there has been a consensus that the problem of "loss of information" is both deep and troubling. It is also thought that resolution of the problem may hold some conceptual keys to the unification of gravity with the other forces. I argue that this consensus view is mistaken. The so-called "information loss paradox" arises rather from the inaccurate application of foundational principles, involving both mathematical and conceptual errors. The resources for resolving the "paradox" are familiar and uncontroversial, as has been pointed out in the literature. The problem ought to have been dismissed 40 years ago. Recent radical attempts to solve the problem are blind alleys, solutions in search of a problem.
