Abstract:We describe the homotopy classes of 2 by 2 periodic simple (=non-degenerate) matrices with various symmetries. This turns out to be an elementary exercise in the homotopy of closed curves in three dimensions. The matrices represent gapped Bloch Hamiltonians in 1D with a two-dimensional Hilbert space per unit cell.

Abstract:In this paper we generalize the notion of regular homotopy of immersions of a closed connected n-manifold into R^{2n-1} to locally generic mappings. The main result is that if n=2 then two mappings with singularities are regularly homotopic if and only if they have the same number of cross-cap (or Whitney-umbrella) singularities. As an application, we get a description of the path-components of the space of those immersions of a surface into R^4 whose projections into R^3 are locally generic.

Homotopy Classification of loops of Clifford unitaries

Abstract:Clifford quantum circuits are elementary invertible transformations of quantum systems that map Pauli operators to Pauli operators. We study periodic one-parameter families of Clifford circuits, called loops of Clifford circuits, acting on $\mathsf{d}$-dimensional lattices of prime $p$-dimensional qudits. We propose to use the notion of algebraic homotopy to identify topologically equivalent loops. We calculate homotopy classes of such loops for any odd $p$ and $\mathsf{d}=0,1,2,3$, and $4$. Our main tool is the Hermitian K-theory, particularly a generalization of the Maslov index from symplectic geometry. We observe that the homotopy classes of loops of Clifford circuits in $(\mathsf{d}+1)$-dimensions coincide with the quotient of the group of Clifford Quantum Cellular Automata modulo shallow circuits and lattice translations in $\mathsf{d}$-dimensions.

Abstract:The primary goal of this paper is to study topological invariants in two dimensional twofold rotation and time-reversal symmetric spinful systems. In this paper, firstly we build a new homotopy invariant based on the lifting of the Wilson loop to the universal covering group of the special orthogonal group. Furthermore, we prove that the invariant we built agrees with the K theory invariant. We go beyond the previous understanding of the Wilson loop unwinding in more than two occupied bands by finding an obstruction of such unwinding. Then, within this formalism, we show two examples that have the same Wilson loop spectrum but belong to different topological classes. Finally, we present a tight binding model realizing the non-trivial phase.
Simple homotopy types of even dimensional manifolds

Abstract:Given a closed $n$-manifold, we consider the set of simple homotopy types of $n$-manifolds within its homotopy type, called its simple homotopy manifold set. We characterise it in terms of algebraic $K$-theory, the surgery obstruction map, and the homotopy automorphisms of the manifold. We use this to construct the first examples, for all $n \ge 4$ even, of closed $n$-manifolds that are homotopy equivalent but not simple homotopy equivalent. In fact, we construct infinite families with pairwise the same properties, and our examples can be taken to be smooth for $n \geq 6$. Our key examples are homotopy equivalent to the product of a circle and a lens space. We analyse the simple homotopy manifold sets of these manifolds, determining exactly when they are trivial, finite, and infinite, and investigating their asymptotic behaviour. The proofs involve integral representation theory and class numbers of cyclotomic fields. We also compare with the relation of $h$-cobordism, and produce similar detailed quantitative descriptions of the manifold sets that arise.

Abstract:The index theory for the space of finite propagation unitary operators was developed by Gross, Nesme, Vogts and Werner from the viewpoint of quantum walks in mathematical physics. In particular, they proved that $\pi_0$ of the space is determined by the index. However, nothing is known about the higher homotopy groups. In this article, we describe the homotopy type of the space of finite propagation unitary operators on the Hilbert space of square summable $\mathbb{C}$-valued $\mathbb{Z}$-sequences, so we can determine its homotopy groups. We also study the space of (end-)periodic finite propagation unitary operators.

Abstract:We develop a theory of $\times$-homotopy, fundamental groupoids and covering spaces that apply to non-simple graphs, generalizing existing results for simple graphs. We prove that $\times$-homotopies from finite graphs can be decomposed into moves which adjust at most one vertex at a time, generalizing the spider lemma of \cite{CS1}. We define a notion of homotopy covering map and develop a theory of universal covers and deck transformations, generalizing \cites{TardifWroncha, Matsushita} to non-simple graphs. We examine the case of reflexive graphs, where each vertex has at least one loop. We also prove that these homotopy covering maps satisfy a homotopy lifting property for arbitrary graph homomorphisms, generalizing path lifting results of \cites{Matsushita, TardifWroncha}.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian matrices are ubiquitous in the description of nature ranging from classical dissipative systems, including optical, electrical, and mechanical metamaterials, to scattering of waves and open quantum many-body systems. Seminal line-gap and point-gap classifications of non-Hermitian systems using K-theory have deepened the understanding of many physical phenomena. However, ample systems remain beyond this description; reference points and lines do not in general distinguish whether multiple non-Hermitian bands exhibit intriguing exceptional points, spectral braids and crossings. To address this we consider two different notions: non-Hermitian band gaps and separation gaps that crucially encompass a broad class of multi-band scenarios, enabling the description of generic band structures with symmetries. With these concepts, we provide a unified and comprehensive classification of both gapped and nodal systems in the presence of physically relevant parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) and pseudo-Hermitian symmetries using homotopy theory. This uncovers new stable topology stemming from both eigenvalues and wave functions, and remarkably also implies distinct fragile topological phases. In particular, we reveal different Abelian and non-Abelian phases in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems, described by frame and braid topology. The corresponding invariants are robust to symmetry-preserving perturbations that do not induce (exceptional) degeneracy, and they also predict the deformation rules of nodal phases. We further demonstrate that spontaneous $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking is captured by Chern-Euler and Chern-Stiefel-Whitney descriptions, a fingerprint of unprecedented non-Hermitian topology previously overlooked. These results open the door for theoretical and experimental exploration of a rich variety of novel topological phenomena in a wide range of physical platforms.

Abstract:We prove several positive results regarding representation of homotopy classes of spheres and algebraic groups by regular mappings. Most importantly we show that every mapping from a sphere to an orthogonal or a unitary group is homotopic to a regular one. Furthermore we prove that algebraic homotopy classes of spheres form a subgroup of the homotopy group, and that a similar result holds also for cohomotopy groups of arbitrary varieties.

Abstract:In this paper we explore new relations between Algebraic Topology and the theory of Hopf Algebras. For an arbitrary topological space $X$, the loop space homology $H_*(\Omega\Sigma X; \coefZ)$ is a Hopf algebra. We introduce a new homotopy invariant of a topological space $X$ taking for its value the isomorphism class (over the integers) of the Hopf algebra $H_*(\Omega\Sigma X; \coefZ)$. This invariant is trivial if and only if the Hopf algebra $H_*(\Omega\Sigma X; \coefZ)$ is isomorphic to a Lie-Hopf algebra, that is, to a primitively generated Hopf algebra. We show that for a given $X$ these invariants are obstructions to the existence of a homotopy equivalence $\Sigma X\simeq \Sigma^2Y$ for some space $Y$. Further on, using the notion of Hopf algebras, we establish new structural properties of the cohomology ring, in particular, of the cup product. For example, using the fact that the suspension of a polyhedral product $X$ is a double suspension, we obtain a strong condition on the cohomology ring structure of $X$. This gives an important application in toric topology. For an algebra to be realised as the cohomology ring of a moment-angle manifold $\Z_P$ associated to a simple polytope $P$, we found an obstruction in the Hopf algebra $H_*(\Omega\Sigma \Z_P)$. In addition, we use homotopy decompositions to study particular Hopf algebras.

Abstract:We classify homotopes of classical symmetric spaces (studied in Part I of this work). Our classification uses the fibered structure of homotopes: they are fibered as symmetric spaces, with flat fibers, over a non-degenerate base; the base spaces correspond to inner ideals in Jordan pairs. Using that inner ideals in classical Jordan pairs are always complemented (in the sense defined by O. Loos and E. Neher), the classification of homotopes is obtained by combining the classification of inner ideals with the one of isotopes of a given inner ideal.
Homology of torus spaces with acyclic proper faces of the orbit space

Abstract:Let $X$ be 2n-dimensional compact manifold with a locally standard action of a compact torus. The orbit space $X/T$ is a manifold with corners. Suppose that all proper faces of $X/T$ are acyclic. In the paper we study the homological spectral sequence $E^*_{*,*}\Rightarrow H_*(X)$ corresponding to the filtration of $X$ by orbit types. When the free part of the action is not twisted, we describe the whole spectral sequence in terms of homology and combinatorial structure of $X/T$. In this case we describe the kernel and the cokernel of the natural map $k[X/T]/(l.s.o.p.) \to H_*(X)$, where $k[X/T]$ is a face ring of $X/T$ and $(l.s.o.p.)$ is the ideal generated by a linear system of parameters (this ideal appears as the image of $H^{>0}(BT)$ in equivariant cohomology. There exists a natural double grading on $H_*(X)$, which satisfies bigraded Poincare duality. This general theory is applied to compute homology groups of origami toric manifolds with acyclic proper faces of the orbit space. A number of natural generalizations is considered. These include Buchsbaum simplicial complexes and posets. h'- and h''-numbers of simplicial posets appear as the ranks of certain terms in the spectral sequence $E^*_{*,*}$. In particular, using topological argument we show that Buchsbaum posets have nonnegative h''-vectors. The proofs of this paper rely on the theory of cellular sheaves. We associate to a torus space certain sheaves and cosheaves on the underlying simplicial poset, and observe an interesting duality between these objects. This duality seems to be a version of Poincare-Verdier duality between cellular sheaves and cosheaves.

Abstract:We study equivalences of the form $\Sigma^{V}X\simeq \Sigma^{W}X$, where $G$ is a compact Lie group, $X$ is a $G$-spectrum, and $V$ and $W$ are $G$-representations. These equivalences encode a periodicity phenomenon in $G$-equivariant homotopy theory which generalizes the classical James periodicity for $G = C_2$. When $X = C(a_\lambda)$ is the cofiber of an Euler class, we construct an $RO(G)$-graded $J$-homomorphism $J\colon \pi_\lambda KO_G\rightarrow \pi_\star^G C(a_\lambda)^\times$ which gives control over these periodicities. It also produces infinite periodic families in the $G$-equivariant stable stems. We illustrate this with several explicit examples. More generally, our work gives information about $RO(G)$-graded units in equivariant stable cohomotopy rings. We apply this to construct universal periodicities and differentials in the $G$-homotopy fixed point spectral sequence, and other equivariant Atiyah--Hirzebruch spectral sequences.

Cohomology-Developed Matrices -- constructing families of weighing matrices and automorphism actions

Abstract:The aim of this work is to construct families of weighing matrices via their automorphism group action. This action is determined from the $0,1,2$-cohomology groups of the underlying abstract group. As a consequence, some old and new families of weighing matrices are constructed. These include the Paley Conference, the Projective-Space, the Grassmannian, and the Flag-Variety weighing matrices. We develop a general theory relying on low dimensional group-cohomology for constructing automorphism group actions, and in turn obtain structured matrices that we call \emph{Cohomology-Developed matrices}. This "Cohomology-Development" generalizes the Cocyclic and Group Developments. The Algebraic structure of modules of Cohomology-Developed matrices is discussed, and an orthogonality result is deduced. We also use this algebraic structure to define the notion of \emph{quasiproducts}, which is a generalization of the Kronecker-product.

Abstract:For certain manifolds with an involution the mod 2 cohomology ring of the set of fixed points is isomorphic to the cohomology ring of the manifold, up to dividing the degrees by two. Examples include complex projective spaces and Grassmannians with the standard antiholomorphic involution (with real projective spaces and Grassmannians as fixed point sets). Hausmann, Holm and Puppe have put this observation in the framework of equivariant cohomology, and come up with the concept of "conjugation spaces", where the ring homomorphisms arise naturally from the existence of what they call "cohomology frames". Much earlier, Borel and Haefliger had studied the degree-halving isomorphism between the cohomology rings of complex and real projective spaces and Grassmannians using the theory of complex and real analytic cycles and cycle maps into cohomology. The main result in the present note gives a (purely topological) connection between these two results and provides a geometric intuition between the concept of a cohomology frame. In particular, we see that if every cohomology class on a manifold X with involution is the Thom class of an equivariant topological cycle of codimension twice the codimension of its fixed points (inside the fixed point set of X), these topological cycles will give rise to a cohomology frame.

On the set of asymptotic homologies of orbits on invariant Lagrangian graphs

Abstract:Given a smooth Tonelli Hamiltonian on the torus $\mathbb{T}^{n}$ and a $C^{2}$ Lagrangian graph $W \subset T^{*}\mathbb{T}^{n}$ that is invariant under the Hamiltonian flow and contained within a Mañé supercritical energy level, we demonstrate the existence of a proper cone in the first real homology group $H_1(\mathbb{T}^n,\mathbb{R})$ that contains the asymptotic homologies of the canonical projections of recurrent orbits in $W$. Additionally, for invariant Lagrangian graphs on $\mathbb{T}^{3}$, drawing on Franks' theory of the rotation set of homeomorphisms of $\mathbb{T}^{2}$ homotopic to the identity, we show that under certain assumptions for an invariant Lagrangian graph on $\mathbb{T}^{3}$, if there exists a rational vector in homology contained in the set of asymptotic homologies of orbits on the Lagrangian graph, then the graph contains a Mather measure supported on a periodic orbit. This result generalizes a well-known fact for Lagrangian graphs on $\mathbb{T}^{2}$. Finally, we exploit these results for three dimensional tori to give a partial answer to a conjecture by Carneiro-Ruggiero about the non-existence of Hedlund Lagrangian tori at supercritical energy levels.

Persistence of Heterodimensional Cycles

Abstract:A heterodimensional cycle is an invariant set of a dynamical system consisting of two hyperbolic periodic orbits with different dimensions of their unstable manifolds and a pair of orbits that connect them. For systems which are at least $C^2$, we show that bifurcations of a coindex-1 heterodimensional cycle within a generic 2-parameter family create robust heterodimensional dynamics, i.e., a pair of non-trivial hyperbolic basic sets with different numbers of positive Lyapunov exponents, such that the unstable manifold of each of the sets intersects the stable manifold of the second set and these intersections persist for an open set of parameter values. We also give a solution to the so-called local stabilization problem of coindex-1 heterodimensional cycles in any regularity class $r=2,\ldots,\infty,\omega$. The results are based on the observation that arithmetic properties of moduli of topological conjugacy of systems with heterodimensional cycles determine the emergence of Bonatti-Díaz blenders.

Abstract:We identify the periodic cyclic homology of the algebra of complete symbols on a differential groupoid $\GR$ in terms of the cohomology of $S^*(\GR)$, the cosphere bundle of $A(\GR)$, where $A(\GR)$ is the Lie algebroid of $\GR$. We also relate the Hochschild homology of this algebra with the homogeneous Poisson homology of the space $A^*(\GR) \smallsetminus 0 \cong S^*(\GR) \times (0,\infty)$, the dual of $A(\GR)$ with the zero section removed. We use then these results to compute the Hochschild and cyclic homologies of the algebras of complete symbols associated with manifolds with corners, when the corresponding Lie algebroid is rationally isomorphic to the tangent bundle.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the entire structure of the vector space $Sym_2^0$ of all symmetric matrices of size $2$ having trace zero. This is motivated by the geometrical interpretation of any arbitrary element of $Sym_2^0$. We further study the orbits and stable sets of these elements. As an application of the obtained structure of $Sym_2^0$, we obtain the symmetric matrices of size $2$, trace of whose product with any trace zero symmetric matrix is zero. Finally some well known trigonometric formulas are interpreted geometrically incorporating the anatomy of $Sym_2^0$.
