Abstract:We classify homotopes of classical symmetric spaces (studied in Part I of this work). Our classification uses the fibered structure of homotopes: they are fibered as symmetric spaces, with flat fibers, over a non-degenerate base; the base spaces correspond to inner ideals in Jordan pairs. Using that inner ideals in classical Jordan pairs are always complemented (in the sense defined by O. Loos and E. Neher), the classification of homotopes is obtained by combining the classification of inner ideals with the one of isotopes of a given inner ideal.

We find that cobordism classification correctly describes all known Fermionic SPT phases in space dimension D ≤ 3 and also predicts that all such phases can be realized by free fermions. In higher dimensions we predict the existence of inherently interacting fermionic SPT phases.

Floquet topological phases with symmetry in all dimensions

Abstract:Dynamical systems may host a number of remarkable symmetry-protected phases that are qualitatively different from their static analogs. In this work, we consider the phase space of symmetry-respecting unitary evolutions in detail and identify several distinct classes of evolution that host dynamical order. Using ideas from group cohomology, we construct a set of interacting Floquet drives that generate dynamical symmetry-protected topological order for each nontrivial cohomology class in every dimension, illustrating our construction with explicit two-dimensional examples. We also identify a set of symmetry-protected Floquet drives that lie outside of the group cohomology construction, and a further class of symmetry-respecting topological drives which host chiral edge modes. We use these special drives to define a notion of phase (stable to a class of local perturbations in the bulk) and the concepts of relative and absolute topological order, which can be applied to many different classes of unitary evolutions. These include fully many-body localized unitary evolutions and time crystals.

Abstract:A bstract We develop a mathematical theory of symmetry protected trivial (SPT) orders and anomaly-free symmetry enriched topological (SET) orders in all dimensions via two different approaches with an emphasis on the second approach. The first approach is to gauge the symmetry in the same dimension by adding topological excitations as it was done in the 2d case, in which the gauging process is mathematically described by the minimal modular extensions of unitary braided fusion 1-categories. This 2d result immediately generalizes to all dimensions except in 1d, which is treated with special care. The second approach is to use the 1-dimensional higher bulk of the SPT/SET order and the boundary-bulk relation. This approach also leads us to a precise mathematical description and a classification of SPT/SET orders in all dimensions. The equivalence of these two approaches, together with known physical results, provides us with many precise mathematical predictions.

A Unified Framework of Topological Phases with Symmetry

Abstract:In topological phases in $2+1$ dimensions, anyons fall into representations of quantum group symmetries. As proposed in our work (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1308.4673" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1308.4673">arXiv:1308.4673</a>), physics of a symmetry enriched phase can be extracted by the Mathematics of (hidden) quantum group symmetry breaking of a "parent phase". This offers a unified framework and classification of the symmetry enriched (topological) phases, including symmetry protected trivial phases as well. In this paper, we extend our investigation to the case where the "parent" phases are non-Abelian topological phases. We show explicitly how one can obtain the topological data and symmetry transformations of the symmetry enriched phases from that of the "parent" non-Abelian phase. Two examples are computed: (1) the $\text{Ising}\times\overline{\text{Ising}}$ phase breaks into the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ toric code with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ global symmetry; (2) the $SU(2)_8$ phase breaks into the chiral Fibonacci $\times$ Fibonacci phase with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, a first non-Abelian example of symmetry enriched topological phase beyond the gauge theory construction.

Abstract:In recent years, great success has been achieved on the classification of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases for interacting fermion systems by using generalized cohomology theory. However, the explicit calculation of generalized cohomology theory is extremely hard due to the difficulty of computing obstruction functions. In this paper, based on the physical picture of topological invariants and mathematical techniques in homotopy algebra, we develop an algorithm to resolve this hard problem. It is well known that cochains in the cohomology of the symmetry group, which are used to enumerate the SPT phases, can be expressed equivalently in different linear bases, known as the resolutions. By expressing the cochains in a reduced resolution containing much fewer basis than the choice commonly used in previous studies, the computational cost is drastically reduced. In particular, it reduces the computational cost for infinite discrete symmetry groups, like the wallpaper groups and space groups, from infinity to finity. As examples, we compute the classification of two-dimensional interacting fermionic SPT phases, for all 17 wallpaper symmetry groups

Abstract:Non-Hermitian matrices are ubiquitous in the description of nature ranging from classical dissipative systems, including optical, electrical, and mechanical metamaterials, to scattering of waves and open quantum many-body systems. Seminal line-gap and point-gap classifications of non-Hermitian systems using K-theory have deepened the understanding of many physical phenomena. However, ample systems remain beyond this description; reference points and lines do not in general distinguish whether multiple non-Hermitian bands exhibit intriguing exceptional points, spectral braids and crossings. To address this we consider two different notions: non-Hermitian band gaps and separation gaps that crucially encompass a broad class of multi-band scenarios, enabling the description of generic band structures with symmetries. With these concepts, we provide a unified and comprehensive classification of both gapped and nodal systems in the presence of physically relevant parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) and pseudo-Hermitian symmetries using homotopy theory. This uncovers new stable topology stemming from both eigenvalues and wave functions, and remarkably also implies distinct fragile topological phases. In particular, we reveal different Abelian and non-Abelian phases in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems, described by frame and braid topology. The corresponding invariants are robust to symmetry-preserving perturbations that do not induce (exceptional) degeneracy, and they also predict the deformation rules of nodal phases. We further demonstrate that spontaneous $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking is captured by Chern-Euler and Chern-Stiefel-Whitney descriptions, a fingerprint of unprecedented non-Hermitian topology previously overlooked. These results open the door for theoretical and experimental exploration of a rich variety of novel topological phenomena in a wide range of physical platforms.

Classification of Dipolar Symmetry-Protected Topological Phases: Matrix Product States, Stabilizer Hamiltonians and Finite Tensor Gauge Theories

Abstract:We classify one-dimensional symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases protected by dipole symmetries. A dipole symmetry comprises two sets of symmetry generators: charge and dipole operators, which together form a non-trivial algebra with translations. Using matrix product states (MPS), we show that for a $G$ dipole symmetry with $G$ a finite abelian group, the one-dimensional dipolar SPTs are classified by the group $H^2[G\times G,U(1)]/H^2[G,U(1)]^2$. Because of the symmetry algebra, the MPS tensors exhibit an unusual property, prohibiting the fractionalization of charge operators at the edges. For each phase in the classification, we explicitly construct a stabilizer Hamiltonian to realize the SPT phase and derive the response field theories by coupling the dipole symmetry to background tensor gauge fields. These field theories generalize the Dijkgraaf-Witten theories to twisted finite tensor gauge theories.

Abstract:We develop a theoretical framework for the classification and construction of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases, which are a special class of zero-temperature phases of strongly interacting gapped quantum many-body systems that exhibit topological properties. The framework unifies various proposals for the classification of SPT phases, including the group (super-)cohomology proposal, the (spin-)cobordism proposal, the Freed-Hopkins proposal, and the Kitaev proposal. The power of the framework is demonstrated in a number of applications: (1) the classification and construction of 3D fermionic SPT phases in Wigner-Dyson classes A and AII with glide symmetry, (2) the classification and construction of 3D bosonic SPT phases with space-group symmetries for all 230 space groups, (3) the derivation of a Mayer-Vietoris sequence relating the classification of SPT phases with and without reflection symmetry, and (4) an interpretation of the structure of general crystalline SPT phases via the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence. The framework is based on Kitaev's idea that short-range entangled states form what are known as $\Omega$-spectra in the sense of algebraic topology, and models the classification of SPT phases by what are called generalized cohomology theories.

Abstract:We generalize Laughlin's flux insertion argument, originally discussed in the context of the quantum Hall effect, to topological phases protected by non-on-site unitary symmetries, in particular by parity symmetry or parity symmetry combined with an on-site unitary symmetry. As a model, we discuss fermionic or bosonic systems in two spatial dimensions with CP symmetry, which are, by the CPT theorem, related to time-reversal symmetric topological insulators (e.g., the quantum spin Hall effect). In particular, we develop the stability/instability (or "gappability"/"ingappablity") criteria for non-chiral conformal field theories with parity symmetry that may emerge as an edge state of a symmetry-protected topological phase. A necessary ingredient, as it turns out, is to consider the edge conformal field theories on unoriented surfaces, such as the Klein bottle, which arises naturally from enforcing parity symmetry by a projection operation.

Abstract:We propose that symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases with crystalline symmetry are formulated by equivariant generalized homologies $h^G_n(X)$ over a real space manifold $X$ with $G$ a crystalline symmetry group. The Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence unifies various notions in crystalline SPT phases such as the layer construction, higher-order SPT phases and Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type theorems. Our formulation is applicable to interacting systems with onsite and crystalline symmetries as well as free fermions.

Abstract:We construct fixed-point wave functions and exactly solvable commuting-projector Hamiltonians for a large class of bosonic symmetry-enriched topological (SET) phases, based on the concept of equivalent classes of symmetric local unitary transformations. We argue that for onsite unitary symmetries, our construction realizes all SETs free of anomaly, as long as the underlying topological order itself can be realized with a commuting-projector Hamiltonian. We further extend the construction to anti-unitary symmetries (e.g. time-reversal symmetry), mirror-reflection symmetries, and to anomalous SETs on the surface of three-dimensional symmetry-protected topological phases. Mathematically, our construction naturally leads to a generalization of group extensions of unitary fusion categories to anti-unitary symmetries.
Anomaly and invertible field theory with higher-form symmetry: Extended group cohomology

Abstract:In the realm of invertible symmetry, the topological approach based on classifying spaces dominates the classification of 't Hooft anomalies and symmetry protected topological phases. We explore the alternative algebraic approach based on cochains that directly characterize the lattice lagrangian of invertible field theories and the anomalous phase factor of topological operator rearrangements. In the current literature, the algebraic approach has been systematically described for only finite 0-form symmetries. In this initial work, we generalize it to finite higher-form symmetries with trivial higher-group structure. We carefully analyze the algebraic cochains and abstract a purely algebraic structure that naturally generalizes group cohomology. Using techniques from simplicial homotopy theory, we show its isomorphism to the cohomology of classifying spaces. The proof is based on an explicit construction of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces and their products.

Holographic theory for continuous phase transitions -- the emergence and symmetry protection of gaplessness

Abstract:Two global symmetries are holo-equivalent if their algebras of local symmetric operators are isomorphic. Holo-equivalent classes of global symmetries are classified by gappable-boundary topological orders (TO) in one higher dimension (called symmetry TO), which leads to a symmetry/topological-order (Symm/TO) correspondence. We establish that: (1) For systems with a symmetry described by symmetry TO $M$, their gapped and gapless states are classified by condensable algebras $A$, formed by elementary excitations in $M$ with trivial self/mutual statistics. Such classified states (called $A$-states) can describe symmetry breaking orders, symmetry protected topological orders, symmetry enriched topological orders, gapless critical points, etc., in a unified way. (2) The local low-energy properties of an $A$-state can be calculated from its reduced symmetry TO $M_{/A}$, using holographic modular bootstrap (holoMB) which takes $M_{/A}$ as an input. Here $M_{/A}$ is obtained from $M$ by condensing excitations in $A$. Notably, an $A$-state must be gapless if $M_{/A}$ is nontrivial. This provides a unified understanding of the emergence and symmetry protection of gaplessness that applies to symmetries that are anomalous, higher-form, and/or non-invertible. (3) The relations between condensable algebras constrain the structure of the global phase diagram. (4) 1+1D bosonic systems with $S_3$ symmetry have four gapped phases with unbroken symmetries $S_3$, $\mathbb{Z}_3$, $\mathbb{Z}_2$, and $\mathbb{Z}_1$. We find a duality between two transitions $S_3 \leftrightarrow \mathbb{Z}_1$ and $\mathbb{Z}_3 \leftrightarrow \mathbb{Z}_2$: they are either both first order or both (stably) continuous, and in the latter case, they are described by the same conformal field theory (CFT).

Abstract:The phase space of a particle or a mechanical system contains an intrinsic symplectic structure, and hence, it is a symplectic manifold. Recently, new invariants for symplectic manifolds in terms of cohomologies of differential forms have been introduced by Tseng and Yau. Here, we discuss the physical motivation behind the new symplectic invariants and analyze these invariants for phase space, i.e., the non-compact cotangent bundle.
Characterization and Classification of Fermionic Symmetry Enriched Topological Phases

Abstract:We examine the interplay of symmetry and topological order in $2+1$ dimensional fermionic topological phases of matter. We define fermionic topological symmetries acting on the emergent topological effective theory described using braided tensor category theory. Connecting this to the ${\cal G}^{\rm f}$ fermionic symmetry of the microscopic physical system, we characterize and classify symmetry fractionalization in fermionic topological phases. We find that the physical fermion provides constraints that result in a tiered structure of obstructions and classification of fractionalization with respect to the physical fermions, the quasiparticles, and the vortices. The fractionalization of the (bosonic) symmetry $G= {\cal G}^{\rm f}/\mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm f}$ on the physical fermions is essentially the central extension of $G$ by the $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm f}$ fermion parity conservation that yields the fermionic symmetry ${\cal G}^{\rm f}$. We develop an algebraic theory of ${\cal G}^{\rm f}$ symmetry defects for fermionic topological phases using $G$-crossed braided tensor category theory. This formalism allows us to fully characterize and classify $2+1$ dimensional fermionic symmetry enriched topological phases with on-site unitary fermionic symmetry group ${\cal G}^{\rm f}$. We first apply this formalism to extract the minimal data specifying a general fermionic symmetry protected topological phase, and demonstrate that such phases with fixed ${\cal G}^{\rm f}$ form a group under fermionic stacking. Then we analyze general fermionic symmetry enriched topological phases and find their classification is given torsorially by the classification of the symmetry fractionalization of quasiparticles combined with the classification of fermionic symmetry protected topological phases. We illustrate our results by detailing a number of examples, including all the invertible fermionic topological phases.

Classification of 1+1D gapless symmetry protected phases via topological holography

Abstract:Symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT) gives a holographic correspondence between systems with a global symmetry and a higher-dimensional topological field theory. In this framework, classification of gapped phases of matter in spacetime dimension 1+1D correspond to classifications of mechanisms to confine the SymTFT by condensing anyons. In this work, we extend these results to characterize gapless symmetry-protected topological states: symmetry-enriched gapless phases or critical points that exhibit edge modes protected by symmetry and topology. We establish a one-to-one correspondence between 1+1D bosonic gSPTs, and partially-confined boundaries of 2+1D SymTFTs. From general physical considerations, we determine the set of data and consistency conditions required to define a 1+1D gSPT, and show that this data precisely matches that of symmetry-preserving partial confinement (or partially gapped boundaries) of 2+1D quantum double models. We illustrate this correspondence through a dimensional reduction (thin-slab) construction, which enables a physically-intuitive derivation of how properties of the gSPT such as edge modes, emergent anomalies, and stability to perturbations arise from the SymTFT perspective.ditions required to define a 1+1D gSPT and show that they fully determine the physics of the gSPT including edge modes and emergent anomaly.

Abstract:We define and compute many-body topological invariants of interacting fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases, protected by an orientation-reversing symmetry, such as time-reversal or reflection symmetry. The topological invariants are given by partition functions obtained by a path integral on unoriented spacetime which, as we show, can be computed for a given ground state wave function by considering a non-local operation, "partial" reflection or transpose. As an application of our scheme, we study the $\mathbb{Z}_8$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{16}$ classification of topological superconductors in one and three dimensions.

Abstract:We present systematic constructions of tensor-network wavefunctions for bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases respecting both onsite and spatial symmetries. From the classification point of view, our results show that in spatial dimensions $d=1,2,3$, the cohomological bosonic SPT phases protected by a general symmetry group $SG$ involving onsite and spatial symmetries are classified by the cohomology group $H^{d+1}(SG,U(1))$, in which both the time-reversal symmetry and mirror reflection symmetries should be treated as anti-unitary operations. In addition, for every SPT phase protected by a discrete symmetry group and some SPT phases protected by continous symmetry groups, generic tensor-network wavefunctions can be constructed which would be useful for the purpose of variational numerical simulations. As a by-product, our results demonstrate a generic connection between rather conventional symmetry enriched topological phases and SPT phases via an anyon condensation mechanism.
