Abstract:We construct cumulants up to a finite order of a tensor field theory perturbed by a quartic term, nicknamed the $T_3^4$ model. The method we use is the multi-scale loop vertex expansion. We prove analyticity and Borel summability of the cumulants up to finite order.

Abstract:In this paper we construct cumulants for stable random matrix models with single trace interactions of arbitrarily high even order. We obtain explicit and convergent expansions for the cumulants. We show that any cumulant is an analytic function inside a cardioid domain in the complex plane and we prove their Borel-LeRoy summability at the origin of the coupling constant. Our proof is uniform in the external variables.

Abstract:In previous work, we introduced Mysterious Triality, extending the Mysterious Duality of Iqbal, Neitzke, and Vafa between physics and algebraic geometry to include algebraic topology in the form of rational homotopy theory. Starting with the rational Sullivan minimal model of the 4-sphere $S^4$, capturing the dynamics of M-theory via Hypothesis H, this progresses to the dimensional reduction of M-theory on torus $T^k$, $k \ge 1$, with its dynamics described via the iterated cyclic loop space $\mathcal{L}_c^k S^4$ of the 4-sphere. From this, we also extracted data corresponding to the maximal torus/Cartan subalgebra and the Weyl group of the exceptional Lie group/algebra of type $E_k$. In this paper, we discover much richer symmetry by extending the data of the Cartan subalgebra to a maximal parabolic subalgebra $\mathfrak{p}_k^{k(k)}$ of the split real form $\mathfrak{e}_{k(k)}$ of the exceptional Lie algebra of type $E_k$ by exhibiting an action, in rational homotopy category, of $\mathfrak{p}_k^{k(k)}$ on the slightly more symmetric than $\mathcal{L}_c^k S^4$ toroidification $\mathcal{T}^k S^4$. This action universally represents symmetries of the equations of motion of supergravity in the reduction of M-theory to $11-k$ dimensions. Along the way, we identify the minimal model of the toroidification $\mathcal{T}^k S^4$, generalizing the results of Vigué-Poirrier, Sullivan, and Burghelea, and establish an algebraic toroidification/totalization adjunction.

Abstract:Cumulants represent a natural language for expressing macroscopic properties of a solid. We show that cumulants are subject to a nontrivial geometry. This geometry provides an intuitive understanding of a number of cumulant relations which had been obtained so far by using algebraic considerations. We give general expressions for their infinitesimal and finite transformations and represent a cumulant wave operator through an integration over a path in the Hilbert space. Cases are investigated where this integration can be done exactly. An expression of the ground-state wavefunction in terms of the cumulant wave operator is derived. In the second part of the article we derive the cumulant counterpart of Faddeev`s equations and show its connection to the method of increments.

Loops of Loops Expansion in the Amplituhedron

Abstract:We study a novel geometric expansion for scattering amplitudes in the planar sector of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory, in the context of the Amplituhedron which reproduces the all-loop integrand as a canonical differential form on the positive geometry. In a paper by Arkani-Hamed, Henn and one of the authors, it was shown that this result can be recast in terms of negative geometries with a certain hierarchy of loops (closed cycles) in the space of loop momenta, represented by lines in momentum twistor space. One can then calculate an all-loop order result in the approximation where only tree graphs in the space of all loops are considered. Furthermore, using differential equation methods, it is possible to calculate and resum integrated expressions and obtain strong coupling results. In this paper, we provide a more general framework for the loops of loops expansion and outline a powerful method for the determination of differential forms for higher-order geometries. We solve the problem completely for graphs with one internal cycle, but the method can be used more generally for other geometries.

Abstract:We use variational perturbation theory to calculate various universal amplitude ratios above and below Tc in minimally subtracted straight phi4 theory with N components in three dimensions. In order to best exhibit the method as a powerful alternative to Borel resummation techniques, we consider only two- and three-loops expressions where our results are analytic expressions. For the critical exponents, we also extend existing analytic expressions for two loops to three loops.

Finite Free Cumulants: Multiplicative Convolutions, Genus Expansion and Infinitesimal Distributions

Abstract:Given two polynomials $p(x), q(x)$ of degree $d$, we give a combinatorial formula for the finite free cumulants of $p(x)\boxtimes_d q(x)$. We show that this formula admits a topological expansion in terms of non-crossing multi-annular permutations on surfaces of different genera. This topological expansion, on the one hand, deepens the connection between the theories of finite free probability and free probability, and in particular proves that $\boxtimes_d$ converges to $\boxtimes$ as $d$ goes to infinity. On the other hand, borrowing tools from the theory of second order freeness, we use our expansion to study the infinitesimal distribution of certain families of polynomials which include Hermite and Laguerre, and draw some connections with the theory of infinitesimal distributions for real random matrices. Finally, building off our results we give a new short and conceptual proof of a recent result [Steinerberger (2020), Hoskins and Kabluchko (2020)] that connects root distributions of polynomial derivatives with free fractional convolution powers.

Another proof of the $1/N$ expansion of the rank three tensor model with tetrahedral interaction

Abstract:The rank three tensor model with tetrahedral interaction was shown by Carrozza and Tanasa to admit a $1/N$ expansion, dominated by melonic diagrams, and double tadpoles decorated with melons at next-to-leading order. This model has generated a renewed interest in tensor models because it has the same large $N$ limit as the SYK model. In contrast with matrix models, there is no method which would be able to prove the existence of $1/N$ expansions in arbitrary tensor models. The method used by Carrozza and Tanasa proves the existence of the $1/N$ expansion using two-dimensional topology, before identifying the leading order and next-to-leading graphs. However, another method was required for complex, rank three tensor models with planar interactions, which is based on flips. The latter are moves which cut two propagators of Feynman graphs and reglue them differently. They allow transforming graphs while tracking their orders in the $1/N$ expansion. Here we use this method to re-prove the results of Carrozza and Tanasa, thereby proving the existence of the $1/N$ expansion, the melonic dominance at leading order and the melon-decorated double tadpoles at next-to-leading order, all in one go.

Abstract:We study superconformal indices of $4d$ compactifications of the $6d$ minimal $(D_{N+3},D_{N+3})$ conformal matter theories on a punctured Riemann surface. Introduction of supersymmetric surface defect in these theories is done at the level of the index by the action of the finite difference operators on the corresponding indices. There exist at least three different types of such operators according to three types of punctures with $A_N, C_N$ and $\left(A_1\right)^N$ global symmetries. We mainly concentrate on $C_2$ case and derive explicit expression for an infinite tower of difference operators generalizing the van Diejen model. We check various properties of these operators originating from the geometry of compactifications. We also provide an expression for the kernel function of both our $C_2$ operator and previously derived $A_2$ generalization of van Diejen model. Finally we also consider compactifications with $A_N$-type punctures and derive the full tower of commuting difference operators corresponding to this root system generalizing the result of our previous paper.

Combinatorial decompositions for deformed or decorated classes of maps

Abstract:The perturbative expansion of tensorial field theories in Feynman graphs can be interpreted as weighted generating series of some piecewise linear varieties. This simple fact establishes a link between two a priori distinct fields: the combinatorics of discrete manifolds on one hand and tensorial field theories on the other hand. In this thesis, we study different aspects revolving around this connection between combinatorics and field theory. First, we consider constellations model, which generalize maps and their algebraic properties. This makes them suited to probe the b-deformation, a deformation of the algebra of symmetric functions. We will study the constraints satisfied by the generating series of cubical b-deformed constellations. Second, we analyze the double scaling limit of particular tensor models of order 3. For tensor of order greater than two, the nature of the 1/N-expansion is qualitatively different from the matrix case of order 2. In particular, only the leading order graphs are fully characterized. Despite this fact, it is possible to identify graphs of subleading orders contributing to the double scaling limit by implementing the scheme decomposition for Feynman graphs of these theories. An analysis of the singularity of the schemes then allows us to give a complete characterization of the graphs contributing to the double scaling limit. Finally, we investigate a particular link between a tensor and a vector field theory which both admit a melonic limit. Namely, we will show that we can obtain the vectorial Amit-Roginski model by considering perturbations around a classical solution of the Boulatov model, a tensorial theory. We give sufficient conditions on the classical solution so that the effective action for the perturbation around this solution takes the form of the Amit-Roginski action.

Enhancing non-melonic triangulations: A tensor model mixing melonic and planar maps

Abstract:Ordinary tensor models of rank $D\geq 3$ are dominated at large $N$ by tree-like graphs, known as melonic triangulations. We here show that non-melonic contributions can be enhanced consistently, leading to different types of large $N$ limits. We first study the most generic quartic model at $D=4$, with maximally enhanced non-melonic interactions. The existence of the $1/N$ expansion is proved and we further characterize the dominant triangulations. This combinatorial analysis is then used to define a non-quartic, non-melonic class of models for which the large $N$ free energy and the relevant expectations can be calculated explicitly. They are matched with random matrix models which contain multi-trace invariants in their potentials: they possess a branched polymer phase and a 2D quantum gravity phase, and a transition between them whose entropy exponent is positive. Finally, a non-perturbative analysis of the generic quartic model is performed, which proves analyticity in the coupling constants in cardioid domains.

Abstract:The quantization of the mirror curve to a toric Calabi-Yau threefold gives rise to quantum-mechanical operators, whose fermionic spectral traces produce factorially divergent power series in the Planck constant. These asymptotic expansions can be promoted to resurgent trans-series. They show infinite towers of periodic singularities in their Borel plane and infinitely many rational Stokes constants, which are encoded in generating functions expressed in closed form in terms of $q$-series. We provide an exact solution to the resurgent structure of the first fermionic spectral trace of the local $\mathbb{P}^2$ geometry in the semiclassical limit of the spectral theory, corresponding to the strongly-coupled regime of topological string theory on the same background in the conjectural TS/ST correspondence. Our approach straightforwardly applies to the dual weakly-coupled limit of the topological string. We present and prove closed formulae for the Stokes constants as explicit arithmetic functions and for the perturbative coefficients as special values of known $L$-functions, while the duality between the two scaling regimes of strong and weak string coupling constant appears in number-theoretic form. A preliminary numerical investigation of the local $\mathbb{F}_0$ geometry unveils a more complicated resurgent structure with logarithmic sub-leading asymptotics. Finally, we obtain a new analytic prediction on the asymptotic behavior of the fermionic spectral traces in an appropriate WKB double-scaling regime, which is captured by the refined topological string in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit.

Resummation of Multi-Stress Tensors in Higher Dimensions

Abstract:In the context of holographic conformal field theories (CFTs), a system of linear partial differential equations was recently proposed to be the higher-dimensional analog of the null-state equations in $d=2$ CFTs at large central charge. Solving these equations in a near-lightcone expansion yields solutions that match the minimal-twist multi-stress tensor contributions to a heavy-light four-point correlator (or a thermal two-point correlator) computed using holography, the conformal bootstrap, and other methods. This note explores the exact solutions to these equations. We begin by observing that, in an expansion in terms of the ratio between the heavy operator's dimension and the central charge, the $d=2$ correlator involving the level-two degenerate scalars at each order can be represented as a Bessel function; the resummation yields the Virasoro vacuum block. We next observe a relation between the $d=2$ correlator and the $d=4$ near-lightcone correlator involving light scalars with the same conformal dimension. The resummed $d=4$ correlator takes a simple form in the complex frequency domain. Unlike the Virasoro vacuum block, the resummation in $d=4$ leads to essential singularities. Similar expressions are also obtained when the light scalar's dimension takes other finite values. These CFT results correspond to a holographic computation with a spherical black hole. In addition, using the differential equations, we demonstrate that the correlators can be reconstructed via certain modes. In $d=2$, these modes are related to the Virasoro algebra.

Gromov-Witten/Hilbert versus AdS3/CFT2 Correspondence

Abstract:We consider the boundary dual of AdS3xS3xK3 for NS5-flux Q5=1, which is described by a sigma model with target space given by the d-fold symmetric product of K3. Building on results in algebraic geometry, we address the problem of deforming it away from the orbifold point from the viewpoint of topological strings. We propose how the 't Hooft expansion can be geometrized in terms of Gromov-Witten invariants and, in favorable settings, how it can be summed up to all orders in closed form. We consider an explicit example in detail for which we discuss the genus expansion around the orbifold point, as well as the divergence in the strong coupling regime. We find that within the domain of convergence, scale separation does not occur. However, in order for the mathematical framework to be applicable in the first place, we need to consider "reduced" Gromov-Witten invariants that fit, as we argue, naturally to topologically twisted N=4 strings. There are some caveats and thus to what extent this toy model captures the physics of strings on AdS3xS3xK3 remains to be seen.

On the finite basis topologies for multi-loop high-multiplicity Feynman integrals

Abstract:In this work, we systematically analyse Feynman integrals in the `t Hooft-Veltman scheme. We write an explicit reduction resulting from partial fractioning the high-multiplicity integrands to a finite basis of topologies at any given loop order. We find all of these finite basis topologies at two loops in four external dimensions. Their maximal cut and the leading singularity are expressed in terms of the Gram determinant and Baikov polynomial. By performing an Integration-By-Parts reduction without any cut constraint on a numerical probe for one of these topologies, we show that the computational complexity drops significantly compared to the Conventional Dimensional Regularization scheme. Formally, our work implies an upper bound on the rigidity of special functions appearing in the iterated integral solutions at each loop order in perturbative Quantum Field Theory. Phenomenologically, the integrand-level reduction we present will substantially simplify the task of providing high-precision predictions for future high-multiplicity collider observables.

Moduli Spaces in CFT: Large Charge Operators

Abstract:Using the large-charge expansion, we prove a necessary condition for a CFT to exhibit conformal symmetry breaking, under the assumption that a continuous global symmetry is ${\it also}$ broken on the moduli space: there must be a tower of charged local operators whose scaling dimensions are asymptotically linear in the charge. In supersymmetric theories with a continuous R-symmetry and a holomorphic moduli space, the existence of such a tower of operators follows trivially from a BPS condition: their scaling dimensions are then exactly linear in the R-charge. We illustrate the more general statement in several examples of three-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ CFTs, where the leading linear behavior receives nontrivial corrections. By considering a suitable scaling limit, we also relate the spectrum of states with large charge on the cylinder (isomorphic to local operators) to the spectrum of massive particles on the moduli space.

Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we introduce the notion of "cyclic stratum" of a Frobenius manifold $M$. This is the set of points of the extended manifold $\mathbb C^*\times M$ at which the unit vector field is a cyclic vector for the isomonodromic system defined by the flatness condition of the extended deformed connection. The study of the geometry of the complement of the cyclic stratum is addressed. We show that at points of the cyclic stratum, the isomonodromic system attached to $M$ can be reduced to a scalar differential equation, called the "master differential equation" of $M$. In the case of Frobenius manifolds coming from Gromov-Witten theory, namely quantum cohomologies of smooth projective varieties, such a construction reproduces the notion of quantum differential equation. In the second part of the paper, we introduce two multilinear transforms, called "Borel-Laplace $(\boldsymbol \alpha,\boldsymbol\beta)$-multitransforms", on spaces of Ribenboim formal power series with exponents and coefficients in an arbitrary finite dimensional $\mathbb C$-algebra $A$. When $A$ is specialized to the cohomology of smooth projective varieties, the integral forms of the Borel-Laplace $(\boldsymbol \alpha,\boldsymbol\beta)$-multitransforms are used in order to rephrase the Quantum Lefschetz Theorem. This leads to explicit Mellin-Barnes integral representations of solutions of the quantum differential equations for a wide class of smooth projective varieties, including Fano complete intersections in projective spaces. In the third and final part of the paper, as an application, we show how to use the new analytic tools, introduced in the previous parts, in order to study the quantum differential equations of Hirzebruch surfaces. This finally leads to the proof of Dubrovin Conjecture for all Hirzebruch surfaces.

On the $1/c$ expansion in $2d$ CFTs with degenerate operators

Abstract:We analytically determine the large central charge asymptotic expansion of the Virasoro conformal blocks entering in four-point functions with external degenerate operators on a sphere in $2d$ CFTs, and study its resurgence properties as a function of the conformal cross-ratio $z$. We focus on the cases of four heavy level-two $(2,1)$ degenerate operators, and two $(2,1)$ heavy degenerate ones plus two arbitrary light operators. The $1/c$ asymptotic series is Borel summable for generic values of $z$, but it jumps when a Stokes line is crossed. Starting from the $1/c$ series of the identity block, we show how a resurgent analysis allows us to completely determine the other Virasoro block and in fact to reconstruct the full correlator. We also show that forbidden singularities, known to exist in correlators with two heavy and two light operators, appear with four heavy operators as well. In both cases, they are turning points emanating Stokes lines, artefacts of the asymptotic expansion, and we show how they are non perturbatively resolved. More general correlators and implications for gravitational theories in $\text{AdS}_{3}$ are briefly discussed. Our results are based on new asymptotic expansions for large parameters $(a,b,c)$ of certain hypergeometric functions $\,_2 F_1(a,b,c;z)$ which can be useful in general.

Large N instantons from topological strings

Abstract:The $1/N$ expansion of matrix models is asymptotic, and it requires non-perturbative corrections due to large $N$ instantons. Explicit expressions for large $N$ instanton amplitudes are known in the case of Hermitian matrix models with one cut, but not in the multi-cut case. We show that the recent exact results on topological string instanton amplitudes provide the non-perturbative contributions of large $N$ instantons in generic multi-cut, Hermitian matrix models. We present a detailed test in the case of the cubic matrix model by considering the asymptotics of its $1/N$ expansion, which we obtain at relatively high genus for a generic two-cut background. These results can be extended to certain non-conventional matrix models which admit a topological string theory description. As an application, we determine the large $N$ instanton corrections for the free energy of ABJM theory on the three-sphere, which correspond to D-brane instanton corrections in superstring theory. We also illustrate the applications of topological string instantons in a more mathematical setting by considering orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants. By focusing on the example of $\mathbb{C}^3/\mathbb{Z}_3$, we show that they grow doubly-factorially with the genus and we obtain and test explicit asymptotic formulae for them.

Abstract:A method is proposed for obtaining a systematic expansion of thermodynamic functions of spin systems with large spin S in powers of 1/S. It uses the cumulant technique and a coherent-state representation of the partition function Z. The expansion of Z in terms of cumulants yields an effective classical Hamiltonian with temperature-dependent quantum corrections. For the Heisenberg quantum Hamiltonian, they have a non-Heisenberg form. The effective Hamiltonian can be solved by methods familiar for classical systems.

Abstract:We consider lattice Hamiltonian realizations of ($d$+1)-dimensional Dijkgraaf-Witten theory. In (2+1)d, it is well-known that the Hamiltonian yields point-like excitations classified by irreducible representations of the twisted quantum double. This can be confirmed using a tube algebra approach. In this paper, we propose a generalization of this strategy that is valid in any dimensions. We then apply the tube algebra approach to derive the algebraic structure of loop-like excitations in (3+1)d, namely the twisted quantum triple. The irreducible representations of the twisted quantum triple algebra correspond to the simple loop-like excitations of the model. Similarly to its (2+1)d counterpart, the twisted quantum triple comes equipped with a compatible comultiplication map and an $R$-matrix that encode the fusion and the braiding statistics of the loop-like excitations, respectively. Moreover, we explain using the language of loop-groupoids how a model defined on a manifold that is $n$-times compactified can be expressed in terms of another model in $n$-lower dimensions. This can in turn be used to recast higher-dimensional tube algebras in terms of lower dimensional analogues.
