Abstract:We give regular models for modular curves associated with (normalizer of) split and non-split Cartan subgroups of ${\mathrm{GL}}_2 ({\mathbb F}_p )$ (for $p$ any prime, $p\ge 5$). We then compute the group of connected components of the fiber at $p$ of the Néron model of their Jacobians.

Abstract:Let be a smooth geometrically connected projective curve over the field of fractions of a discrete valuation ring , and a modulus on , given by a closed subscheme of which is geometrically reduced. The generalized Jacobian of with respect to is then an extension of the Jacobian of by a torus. We describe its Néron model, together with the character and component groups of the special fibre, in terms of a regular model of over . This generalizes Raynaud's well-known description for the usual Jacobian. We also give some computations for generalized Jacobians of modular curves with moduli supported on the cusps.

Abstract:Let $X_\Delta(N)$ be an intermediate modular curve of level $N$, meaning that there exist (possibly trivial) morphisms $X_1(N)\rightarrow X_\Delta(N) \rightarrow X_0(N)$. For all such intermediate modular curves, we give an explicit description of all primes $p$ such that $X_\Delta(N)_{\overline{\mathbb F}_p}$ is either hyperelliptic or trigonal. Furthermore we also determine all primes $p$ such that $X_\Delta(N)_{\mathbb F_p}$ is trigonal. This is done by first using the Castelnuovo-Severi inequality to establish a bound $N_0$ such that if $X_0(N)_{{\overline{\mathbb F}_p}}$ is hyperelliptic or trigonal, then $N \leq N_0$. To deal with the remaining small values of $N$, we develop a method based on the careful study of the canonical ideal to determine, for a fixed curve $X_\Delta(N)$, all the primes $p$ such that the $X_\Delta(N)_{ {\overline{\mathbb F}_p}}$ is trigonal or hyperelliptic. Furthermore, using similar methods, we show that $X_\Delta(N)_{{\overline{\mathbb F}_p}}$ is not a smooth plane quintic, for any $N$ and any $p$.

Abstract:For a complex elliptic curve $E$ and a point $p$ of order $n$ on it, the images of the points $p_k=kp$ under the Weierstrass embedding of $E$ into $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^2$ are collinear if and only if the sum of indices is divisible by $n$. Thus, it provides a realization of a certain matroid. We study this matroid in detail and prove that its realization space is isomorphic (over $\mathbb{C}$) to the modular curve $X_1(n)$, provided $n\geq 10$, which also provides an integral model of $X_1(n)$. In the process, we find a connection to the classical Ceva and Böröczky examples of special point and line configurations. We also discuss the situation for smaller values of $n$.

Abstract:Working over imperfect fields, we give a comprehensive classification of genus-one curves that are regular but not geometrically regular, extending the known case of geometrically reduced curves. The description is given intrinsically, in terms of twisted forms of standard models with respect to infinitesimal group scheme actions, and not via extrinsic equations. The main new idea is to analyze and exploit moduli for fields of representatives in Cohen's Structure Theorem. The results serve for the understanding of genus-one fibrations over higher-dimensional bases.

Abstract:Let $p\neq{2,3}$ be a prime number and let $\Gamma \subset \mathrm{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$ be a congruence subgroup with modular curve $X_{\Gamma}/K$ and Jacobian $J(X_{\Gamma})$. In this paper we give an explicit group-theoretic description of the semistable toric rank and component group of $J(X_{\Gamma})$ at the finite places of $K$ lying over $p$. We first produce a suitable deformation retract of the minimal Berkovich skeleton of $X_{\Gamma}$ in terms of Hecke-Iwahori double coset spaces. We call this deformation retract the pruned skeleton of the curve. Our description of this skeleton includes a group-theoretic formula for the edge lengths, allowing us to give the component group of the modular curve as the quotient of a lattice using the monodromy pairing. For $X_{0}(N)$, $X_{1}(N)$, $X_{sp}(N)$ and $X_{sp}^{+}(N)$, we explicitly determine the pruned skeleta using a set of coset schemes over $\mathbb{Z}$. This in particular recovers results by Deligne-Rapoport, Edixhoven, Coleman-McMurdy and Tsushima on the semistable reduction type of $X_{0}(p^{n})$ for $n\leq{4}$. Finally, we determine the geometric Tamagawa number and the prime-to-$2$ structure of the component group of $X_{0}(N)$ over the extension given by Krir's theorem.

Computing nonsurjective primes associated to Galois representations of genus $2$ curves

Abstract:For a genus $2$ curve $C$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose Jacobian $A$ admits only trivial geometric endomorphisms, Serre's open image theorem for abelian surfaces asserts that there are only finitely many primes $\ell$ for which the Galois action on $\ell$-torsion points of $A$ is not maximal. Building on work of Dieulefait, we give a practical algorithm to compute this finite set. The key inputs are Mitchell's classification of maximal subgroups of $\mathrm{PSp_4}(\mathbb{F}_\ell)$, sampling of the characteristic polynomials of Frobenius, and the Khare--Wintenberger modularity theorem. The algorithm has been submitted for integration into Sage, executed on all of the genus~$2$ curves with trivial endomorphism ring in the LMFDB, and the results incorporated into the homepage of each such curve.

Ordinary primes in Hilbert modular varieties

Abstract:A well-known conjecture, often attributed to Serre, asserts that any motive over any number field has infinitely many ordinary reductions (in the sense that the Newton polygon coincides with the Hodge polygon). In the case of Hilbert modular cuspforms $f$ of parallel weight $(2, \cdots , 2)$, we show how to produce more ordinary primes by using the Sato-Tate equidistribution and combining it with the Galois theory of the Hecke field. Under the assumption of stronger forms of Sato-Tate equidistribution, we get stronger (but conditional) results. In the case of higher weights, we formulate the ordinariness conjecture for submotives of the intersection cohomology of proper algebraic varieties with motivic coefficients, and verify it for the motives whose $l$-adic Galois realisations are abelian on a finite index subgroup. We get some results for Hilbert cuspforms of weight $(3, \cdots , 3)$, weaker than those for $(2, \cdots , 2)$.

Non-optimal levels of some reducible mod $p$ modular representations

Abstract:Let $p \geq 5$ be a prime, $N$ be an integer not divisible by $p$, $\bar\rho_0$ be a reducible, odd and semi-simple representation of $G_{\mathbb{Q},Np}$ of dimension $2$ and $\{\ell_1,\cdots,\ell_r\}$ be a set of primes not dividing $Np$. After assuming that a certain Selmer group has dimension at most $1$, we find sufficient conditions for the existence of a cuspidal eigenform $f$ of level $N\prod_{i=1}^{r}\ell_i$ and appropriate weight lifting $\bar\rho_0$ such that $f$ is new at every $\ell_i$. Moreover, suppose $p \mid \ell_{i_0}+1$ for some $1 \leq i_0 \leq r$. Then, after assuming that a certain Selmer group vanishes, we find sufficient conditions for the existence of a cuspidal eigenform of level $N\ell_{i_0}^2 \prod_{j \neq i_0} \ell_j$ and appropriate weight which is new at every $\ell_i$ and which lifts $\bar\rho_0$. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Billerey--Menares in many cases.

Abstract:Let $q\geq2$ be a prime power and consider Drinfeld modules of rank 2 over $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$. We prove that there are no points with coordinates being Drinfeld singular moduli, on a family of hyperbolas $XY=\gamma$, where $\gamma$ is a polynomial of small degree. This is an effective André-Oort theorem for these curves. We also prove that there are at most finitely many Drinfeld singular moduli that are algebraic units, for every fixed $q\geq2$, and we give an effective bound on the discriminant of such singular moduli. We give in an appendix an inseparability criterion for values of some classical modular forms, generalising an argument used in the proof of our first result.

Generic models for genus 2 curves with real multiplication

Abstract:Explicit models of families of genus 2 curves with multiplication by $\sqrt D$ are known for $D= 2, 3, 5$. We obtain generic models for genus 2 curves over $\mathbb Q$ with real multiplication in 12 new cases, including all fundamental discriminants $D < 40$. A key step in our proof is to develop an algorithm for minimisation of conic bundles fibred over $\mathbb{P}^2$. We apply this algorithm to simplify the equations for the Mestre conic associated to the generic point on the Hilbert modular surface of fundamental discriminant $D < 100$ computed by Elkies--Kumar.

Abstract:We introduce normalized Drinfeld modular curves that parameterize rank $m$ Drinfeld modules compatible with a $T$-torsion structure arising from a given conjugacy class of nilpotent upper-triangular $n\times n$ matrices with rank $\geqslant n-m$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. This creates a deep link connecting the classification of nilpotent upper-triangular matrices and the decomposition of Drinfeld modular curves. The conjugacy classes of nilpotent upper-triangular matrices one-to-one corresponds to certain $T$-torsion flags, and form a tree structure. As a result, the associated Drinfeld modular curves are organized in the same tree. This generalizes the tower structure introduced by Bassa, Beelen, Garcia, Stichtenoth, and others. Additionally,we prove the geometric irreducibility of $(3,2)$-type normalized Drinfeld modular curves, and characterize their associated function fields.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of characteristic different from 2 and residual characteristic $p$. This paper concerns the $\ell$-modular representations of a connected reductive group $G$ distinguished by a Galois involution, with $\ell$ an odd prime different from $p$. We start by proving a general theorem allowing to lift supercuspidal $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_{\ell}$-representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ distinguished by an arbitrary closed subgroup $H$ to a distinguished supercuspidal $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell}$-representation. Given a quadratic field extension $E/F$ and an irreducible $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_{\ell}$-representation $\pi$ of $\mathrm{GL}_n(E)$, we verify the Jacquet conjecture in the modular setting that if the Langlands parameter $\phi_\pi$ is irreducible and conjugate-self-dual, then $\pi$ is either $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$-distinguished or $(\mathrm{GL}_n(F),\omega_{E/F})$-distinguished (where $\omega_{E/F}$ is the quadratic character of $F^\times$ associated to the quadratic field extension $E/F$ by the local class field theory), but not both, which extends one result of Sécherre to the case $p=2$. We give another application of our lifting theorem for supercuspidal representations distinguished by a unitary involution, extending one result of Zou to $p=2$.

Abstract:We use the theory of canonical models of Shimura varieties to describe the projective limit of the curves Y(N), all N, and its automorphism group. In particular we prove that the Galois group of Q(CM) over Q is an extension of a certain abelian group by a 2-element group, where Q(CM) stands for the the extension of Q by all the CM-points on all the curves Y(N).
