Abstract:This research describes a piezoelectric Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene)/ Polyethylene Terephthalate energy harvester for structural health monitoring of wind turbines. The piezoelectric energy harvester was made of a polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) layer. In addition, PET sheets, double-sided micron-thick tapes, and PVDF sheets were used for device fabrication. In order to optimize the performance of the proposed device, the electrical and mechanical characteristics of PVDF-TrFE material were investigated. Two different piezoelectric energy harvester devices were designed, fabricated, and compared. A wind test setup was developed, and the proposed device was characterized by output voltage and current. Furthermore, a 104 nF capacitance was coupled to the proposed device to store the generated voltage and run a commercial pressure sensor. The generated output power of the harvester was sufficient to drive a MEMS pressure sensor with a maximum current and voltage of 291.34 uA and 937.01 mV, respectively, under wind pressure giving a power value of 272.99 uW.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem this paper attempts to address is the development of a piezoelectric energy harvester for structural health monitoring (SHM) of wind turbines. Specifically, the researchers designed and fabricated a piezoelectric energy harvester based on polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), aiming to power low-power electronic devices through vibration energy harvesting. ### Main Problems 1. **Energy Issue**: Traditional batteries have drawbacks such as high cost, large size, heavy weight, and difficulty in replacement, especially in large structures like wind turbines. Therefore, a sustainable and reliable energy solution is needed. 2. **Structural Health Monitoring**: Wind turbines are subjected to complex wind loads during operation, leading to fatigue and structural damage. An effective structural health monitoring system can detect these damages in time, improving the operational efficiency and safety of wind turbines. ### Solutions 1. **Design and Fabrication of Piezoelectric Energy Harvester**: The researchers designed two different structures of piezoelectric energy harvesters and evaluated their performance through experiments. 2. **Material Selection and Property Optimization**: PVDF-TrFE was chosen as the piezoelectric material due to its high flexibility and mechanical strength, making it suitable for energy harvesting. The material's performance was optimized by characterizing its thickness, pyroelectric, and ferroelectric properties. 3. **Experimental Validation**: A wind tunnel test platform was developed to simulate the wind load conditions during wind turbine operation, testing the output voltage and current of the energy harvester. The results showed that the energy harvester could generate enough power to drive commercial pressure sensors. ### Experimental Results - **Maximum Output Voltage**: Under wind load conditions, the maximum output voltage of the second design of the energy harvester was 937.01 mV. - **Maximum Output Current**: Under wind load conditions, the maximum output current of the second design of the energy harvester was 291.34 µA. - **Maximum Output Power**: Under wind load conditions, the maximum output power of the second design of the energy harvester was 272.99 µW. ### Application Prospects This study provides a feasible energy solution for structural health monitoring of wind turbines, effectively reducing dependence on traditional batteries and improving system reliability and maintainability. Additionally, this technology can be applied to other fields requiring low-power electronic devices, such as wireless sensor networks and environmental monitoring.
