Abstract:We show that a connected, simply connected nilpotent Lie group with an integrable left-invariant complex structure on a generating and suitably complemented subbundle of the tangent bundle admits a CR embedding in complex space as the edge of a wedge in a complex domain defined by polynomials.

Abstract:A quasi-CR-mapping from a nilpotent Lie group of step two to another such group satisfies a Beltrami-type system of partial differential equations which is usually not elliptic but subelliptic when the group is strongly 2-pseudoconcave. We derive an integral representation formula for CR-mappings from a strongly 2-pseudoconcave nilpotent Lie group of step two to another such group and establish the Hölder continuity of ε-quasi-CR-mappings and the stability of CR-mappings between such groups.

Abstract:An explicit classification of simply connected compact homogeneous CR manifolds G/L of codimension one, with non-degenerate Levi form, is given. There are three classes of such manifolds: a) the standard CR homogeneous manifolds which are homogeneous S^1-bundles over a flag manifold F, with CR structure induced by an invariant complex structure on F; b) the Morimoto-Nagano spaces, i.e. sphere bundles $S(N)\subset TN$ of a compact rank one symmetric space N = G/H, with the CR structure induced by the natural complex structure of $TN = G^\C/H^\C$; c) the following manifolds: $SU_n/T^1\cdot SU_{n-2}$, $SU_p\times SU_q/T^1 \cdot U_{p-2}\cdot U_{q-2}$, $SU_n/T^1\cdot SU_2\cdot SU_2\cdot SU_{n-4}$, $SO_{10}/T^1\cdot SO_6$, $E_6/T^1\cdot SO_8$; these manifolds admit canonical holomorphic fibrations over a flag manifold (F,J_F) with typical fiber S(S^k), where k = 2, 3, 5, 7 or 9, respectively; the CR structure is determined by the invariant complex structure J_F on F and by an invariant CR structure on the typical fiber, depending on one complex parameter.

Abstract:Let G \mathsf G be a connected reductive linear algebraic group defined over R \mathbb R , and let C : G → G C: \mathsf G\rightarrow \mathsf G be a fundamental Chevalley involution. Abstract:If a class of finitely generated groups Curly(G) is closed under isometric amalgamations along free subgroups, then every G in Curly(G) can be quasi-isometrically embedded in a group Hat(G) in Curly(G) that has no proper subgroups of finite index. Abstract:We study the existence of certain characteristically nilpotent Lie algebras with flat coadjoint orbits. Their connected, simply connected Lie groups admit square-integrable representations modulo the center. There are many examples of nilpotent Lie groups admitting families of dilations and square-integrable representations, but so far no examples admitting square-integrable representations for which the quotient by the center does not admit a family of dilations. In this paper we construct a two-parameter family of characteristically nilpotent Lie groups $G(\alpha,\beta)$ in dimension $11$, admitting square-integrable representations modulo the center $Z$, such that $G(\alpha,\beta)/Z$ does not admit a family of dilations.

Abstract:In this paper we determine all the simply connected non-degenerate CR Lie groups, which are flat with respect to the Cartan connection: in terms of associated Lie algebras, we assert that the only Cartan flat non-degenerate CR Lie algebras are $\mathfrak{su}(2)$, $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})$, $\mathfrak{aff}(\mathbb{R}) \oplus \mathbb{R}$, and $\mathfrak{h}_{2m+1}$ with its modifications, where $\mathfrak{aff}(\mathbb{R})$ is the affine Lie algebra of dimension 2 and $\mathfrak{h}_{2m+1}$ is the Heisenberg Lie algebra of dimension $2m+1$. Furthermore, we determine all the (flat and non-flat) non-degenerate CR structures on each of these Lie groups.

Abstract:Let X-1 and X-2 be two compact strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds of dimension 2n - 1 >= 5 which are boundaries of complex varieties V-1 and V-2 with only isolated normal singularities in C-N1 and C-N2, respectively. We show that any nonconstant CR morphism from X-1 to X-2 can be extended to a finite holomorphic covering map from V-1 to V-2 in the case where V-2 has only isolated complete intersection singularities. In particular, there is no nonconstant CR morphism between the links of two isolated complete intersection singularities with different embedding codimensions. Finally, using Kohn-Rossi cohomology, we obtain some sufficient conditions for the nonexistence of CR morphisms from X-1 to X-2.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to organize some results on the local geometry of CR singular real-analytic manifolds that are images of CR manifolds via a CR map that is a diffeomorphism onto its image. We find a necessary (sufficient in dimension 2) condition for the diffeomorphism to extend to a finite holomorphic map. The multiplicity of this map is a biholomorphic invariant that is precisely the Moser invariant of the image when it is a Bishop surface with vanishing Bishop invariant. In higher dimensions, we study Levi-flat CR singular images and we prove that the set of CR singular points must be large, and in the case of codimension 2, necessarily Levi-flat or complex. We also show that there exist real-analytic CR functions on such images that satisfy the tangential CR conditions at the singular points, yet fail to extend to holomorphic functions in a neighborhood. We provide many examples to illustrate the phenomena that arise.

Abstract:Abstract deformations of the CR structure of a compact strictly pseudoconvex hypersurface $M$ in $\mathbb{C}^2$ are encoded by complex functions on $M$. In sharp contrast with the higher dimensional case, the natural integrability condition for $3$-dimensional CR structures is vacuous, and generic deformations of a compact strictly pseudoconvex hypersurface $M\subseteq \mathbb{C}^2$ are not embeddable even in $\mathbb{C}^N$ for any $N$. A fundamental (and difficult) problem is to characterize when a complex function on $M \subseteq \mathbb{C}^2$ gives rise to an actual deformation of $M$ inside $\mathbb{C}^2$. In this paper we study the embeddability of families of deformations of a given embedded CR $3$-manifold, and the structure of the space of embeddable CR structures on $S^3$. We show that the space of embeddable deformations of the standard CR $3$-sphere is a Frechet submanifold of $C^{\infty}(S^3,\mathbb{C})$ near the origin. We establish a modified version of the Cheng-Lee slice theorem in which we are able to characterize precisely the embeddable deformations in the slice (in terms of spherical harmonics). We also introduce a canonical family of embeddable deformations and corresponding embeddings starting with any infinitesimally embeddable deformation of the unit sphere in $\mathbb{C}^2$.

Covariant projective representations of Hilbert-Lie groups

Abstract:Hilbert--Lie groups are Lie groups whose Lie algebra is a real Hilbert space whose scalar product is invariant under the adjoint action. These infinite-dimensional Lie groups are the closest relatives to compact Lie groups. Here we study unitary representations of these groups from various perspectives. First, we address norm-continuous, also called bounded, representations: they are well-known for simple groups, but the general picture is more complicated. Our first main result is a characterization of the discrete decomposability of all bounded representations in terms of boundedness of the set of coroots. We also show that bounded representations of type II and III exist if the set of coroots is unbounded. Second, we use covariance with respect to a one-parameter group of automorphisms to implement some regularity. Here we develop some perturbation theory based on half Lie groups that reduces matters to the case where a ``maximal torus'' is fixed, so that compatible weight decompositions can be studied. Third, we extend the context to projective representations which are covariant for a one-parameter group of automorphisms. Here important families of representations arise from ``bounded extremal weights'', and for these the corresponding central extensions can be determined explicitly, together with all one-parameter groups for which a covariant extension exists.

Abstract:In this paper an alternative definition of the Rumin complex $(E_0^\bullet,d_c)$ is presented, one that relies on a different concept of weights of forms. In this way, the Rumin complex can be constructed on any nilpotent Lie group equipped with a Carnot-Carath\'eodory metric. Moreover, this construction allows for the direct application of previous non-vanishing results of $\ell^{q,p}$ cohomology to all nilpotent Lie groups that admit a positive grading.

Abstract:We show that the vanishing of the higher dimensional homology groups of a manifold ensures that every almost CR structure of codimension $k$ may be homotoped to a CR structure. This result is proved by adapting a method due to Haefliger used to study foliations (and previously applied to study the relation between almost complex and complex structures on manifolds) to the case of (almost) CR structures on open manifolds.

Abstract:We define a CR structure on a distinguished hyperplane in $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$ and the CR sub-Laplacian on this CR manifold. We also define symmetries of the CR sub-Laplacian in general and for this special case construct all of them using the ambient construction. Then we investigate the algebra structure of the symmetry algebra of the sub-Laplacian. For this purpose we derive the decomposition of $S^{k}_{0}\mathfrak{sl}(V)$ under the action of $SL(V)$.

Abstract:Let X be a compact Riemann surface of genus g≥3 . Let L=(L,[.,.],♯) be a holomorphic Lie algebroid over X of rank one and degree (L)<2−2g . We consider the moduli space of holomorphic Lλ -connections over X , where λ∈C . We compute the Picard group of the moduli space of Lλ -connections by constructing an explicit smooth compactification of the moduli space of those Lλ -connections whose underlying vector bundle is stable such that the complement is a smooth divisor. We also show that the automorphism group of the moduli space of Lλ -connections fits into a short exact sequence that involves the automorphism group of the moduli space of stable vector bundle over X . For λ = 1, we get Lie algebroid de Rham moduli space of L -connections and we determine its Chow group. Communicated by Manuel Reyes

On 3-nondegenerate CR manifolds in dimension 7 (II): the intransitive case

Abstract:We investigate 3-nondegenerate CR structures in the lowest possible dimension 7 and show that 8 is the maximal dimension for the Lie algebra of symmetries of such structures. The next possible symmetry dimension is 6, and for the automorphism groups the dimension 7 is also realizable. This part (II) is devoted to the case where the symmetry algebra acts intransitively. We use various methods to bound its dimension and demonstrate the existence of infinitely many non-equivalent submaximally symmetric models. Summarizing, we get a stronger form of Beloshapka's conjecture on the symmetry dimension of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^4$.

On the natural nullcones of the symplectic and general linear groups

Abstract:Consider a group acting on a polynomial ring $S$ over a field $K$ by degree-preserving $K$-algebra automorphisms. The invariant ring $R$ is a graded subring of $S$; let $\mathfrak{m}_R$ denote the homogeneous maximal ideal of $R$. Several key properties of the invariant ring and its embedding in $S$ can be deduced by studying the nullcone $S/\mathfrak{m}_R S$ of the group action. This includes, for example, the finite generation of the invariant ring and the purity of the embedding. In this article, we study the nullcones arising from the natural actions of the symplectic and general linear groups. For the natural representation of the symplectic group, the invariant ring is the ring defined by the principal Pfaffians of a fixed even size of a generic alternating matrix. We show that the nullcone of this embedding is a strongly $F$-regular ring in positive characteristic, and hence in characteristic zero, a ring of strongly $F$-regular type. Independent of characteristic, we give a complete description of the divisor class group of the nullcone and determine precisely when it is Gorenstein. We also show that the nullcone ideal has a squarefree initial ideal. For the natural representation of the general linear group, the invariant ring is a generic determinantal ring. The nullcone of this embedding is typically a non-equidimensional ring. The irreducible components of the nullcone are the varieties of complexes of length two, as introduced by Buchsbaum and Eisenbud. We show that each of these irreducible components define strongly $F$-regular rings in positive characteristic. We also show that the Frobenius splitting of the varieties of complexes can be chosen compatibly; it follows that the nullcone is an $F$-pure ring. We also show that the nullcone ideal and the ideals defining the varieties of complexes have squarefree initial ideals with respect to the same monomial order.
