Abstract:Abstract deformations of the CR structure of a compact strictly pseudoconvex hypersurface $M$ in $\mathbb{C}^2$ are encoded by complex functions on $M$. In sharp contrast with the higher dimensional case, the natural integrability condition for $3$-dimensional CR structures is vacuous, and generic deformations of a compact strictly pseudoconvex hypersurface $M\subseteq \mathbb{C}^2$ are not embeddable even in $\mathbb{C}^N$ for any $N$. A fundamental (and difficult) problem is to characterize when a complex function on $M \subseteq \mathbb{C}^2$ gives rise to an actual deformation of $M$ inside $\mathbb{C}^2$. In this paper we study the embeddability of families of deformations of a given embedded CR $3$-manifold, and the structure of the space of embeddable CR structures on $S^3$. We show that the space of embeddable deformations of the standard CR $3$-sphere is a Frechet submanifold of $C^{\infty}(S^3,\mathbb{C})$ near the origin. We establish a modified version of the Cheng-Lee slice theorem in which we are able to characterize precisely the embeddable deformations in the slice (in terms of spherical harmonics). We also introduce a canonical family of embeddable deformations and corresponding embeddings starting with any infinitesimally embeddable deformation of the unit sphere in $\mathbb{C}^2$.

Abstract:We study the fillability (or embeddability) of 3-dimensional $CR$ structures under the geometric flows. Suppose we can solve a certain second order equation for the geometric quantity associated to the flow. Then we prove that if the initial $CR$ structure is fillable, then it keeps having the same property as long as the flow has a solution. We discuss the situation for the torsion flow and the Cartan flow. In the second part, we show that the above mentioned second order operator is used to express a tangency condition for the space of all fillable or embeddable $CR$ structures at one embedded in $\mathbb{C}^{2}.$

Abstract:In this paper we prove new embedding results for compactly supported deformations of $CR$ submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}^{n+d}$: We show that if $M$ is a $2$-pseudoconcave $CR$ submanifold of type $(n,d)$ in $\mathbb{C}^{n+d}$, then any compactly supported $CR$ deformation stays in the space of globally $CR$ embeddable in $\mathbb{C}^{n+d}$ manifolds. This improves an earlier result, where $M$ was assumed to be a quadratic $2$-pseudoconcave $CR$ submanifold of $\mathbb{C}^{n+d}$. We also give examples of weakly $2$-pseudoconcave $CR$ manifolds admitting compactly supported $CR$ deformations that are not even locally $CR$ embeddable.

Abstract:We study the simultaneous filling and embedding problem for a CR family of compact strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds of dimension at least 5. We also derive, as a consequence, the normality of the Stein fibers of the filled-in Stein space under the constant dimensionality assumption of the first Kohn-Rossi cohomology group of the fiber CR manifolds. Two main ingredients for our approach are the work of Catlin on the solution of the ∂-equation with mixed boundary conditions and the work of Siu and Ling on the study of the Grauert direct image theory for a (1,1)-convex-concave family of complex spaces.

Abstract:The present paper is a continuation of [t~0] and []~Z] which are devoted to the existence of global isometric embeddings in R 3 of nonnegatively curved surfaces. In particular, [GL] and [HZ] independently prove that any C 4 nonnegative curvature metric defined over S 2 always has a C 1'1 isometric embedding in _R s. Abstract:In this paper we introduce the concept of inflexible $CR$ submanifolds. These are $CR$ submanifolds of some complex Euclidean space such that any compactly supported $CR$ deformation is again globally $CR$ embeddable into some complex Euclidean space. Our main result is that any $2$-pseudoconcave quadratic $CR$ submanifold of type $(n,d)$ in $\mathbb{C}^{n+d}$ is inflexible.

Abstract:In this paper, we build a compactification by a strictly pseudoconvex CR structure for a complete and non-compact Kähler manifold whose curvature tensor is asymptotic to that of the complex hyperbolic space. To do so, we study in depth the evolution of various geometric objects that are defined on the leaves of some foliation of the complement of a suitable convex subset, called an essential subset , whose leaves are the equidistant hypersurfaces above this latter subset. With a suitable renormalization which is closely related to the anisotropic nature of the ambient geometry, the above mentioned geometric objects converge near infinity, inducing the claimed structure on the boundary at infinity.

A compactness result for the CR Yamabe problem in three dimensions

Abstract:We prove the compactness of the set of solutions to the CR Yamabe problem on a compact strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold of dimension three whose blow-up manifolds at every point have positive p-mass. As a corollary we deduce that compactness holds for CR-embeddable manifolds which are not CR-equivalent to $S^3$. The theorem is proved by blow-up analysis.

Abstract:We study the basic question of characterizing which boundary homeomorphisms of the unit sphere can be extended to a Sobolev homeomorphism of the interior in 3D space. While the planar variants of this problem are well-understood, completely new and direct ways of constructing an extension are required in 3D. We prove, among other things, that a Sobolev homeomorphism φ : R 2 → onto R 2 in W loc 1 , p ( R 2 , R 2 ) for some p ∈ [ 1 , ∞ ) admits a homeomorphic extension h : R 3 → onto R 3 in W loc 1 , q ( R 3 , R 3 ) for 1 ⩽ q < 3 2 p . Such an extension result is nearly sharp, as the bound q = 3 2 p cannot be improved due to the Hölder embedding. The case q = 3 gains an additional interest as it also provides an L 1 -variant of the celebrated Beurling-Ahlfors quasiconformal extension result.

Abstract:For a small deformation Phi of a 3-dimensional pseudoconvex embeddable CR-structure of finite type, we prove that Phi defines an embeddable CR-structure if and only if the Szego projection from ker (Phi)partial derivative(b) to ker partial derivative(b) is a Fredholm operator. This defines a relative index which is in this case equal to the negative of number of small eigenvalues of the operator (Phi)partial derivative(b)*(Phi)partial derivative(b). Convexity and rigidity of hypersurfaces in Cartan-Hadamard manifolds

Abstract:We show that in Cartan-Hadamard manifolds $M^n$, $n\geq 3$, closed infinitesimally convex hypersurfaces $\Gamma$ bound convex flat regions, if curvature of $M^n$ vanishes on tangent planes of $\Gamma$. This encompasses Chern-Lashof-Sacksteder characterization of compact convex hypersurfaces in Euclidean space, and some results of Greene-Wu-Gromov on rigidity of Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. It follows that closed simply connected surfaces in $M^3$ with minimal total absolute curvature bound Euclidean convex bodies, as stated by M. Gromov in 1985. The proofs employ the Gauss-Codazzi equations, a generalization of Schur comparison theorem to CAT($k$) spaces, and other techniques from Alexandrov geometry outlined by A. Petrunin.

Abstract:Clearly for any c, F restricted on the line {v = c} is an embedding outside the two points (0, c) and (1, c). F sends (0, t) and (1, t) to (0, t, 0) for all t. Now take S, which is the boundary of a ball B = { (u, v) ∈ C2 : ∥∥∥(u, v)∥∥∥ ≤ 2}. It is easy to see that the mapping F restricted on S is still an embedding. The image of S under F is a strongly pseudoconvex CR manifold in C3. The variety that F (S) bounds is F (B). Observe that F (B) has curve singularities along the line (0, t, 0). We remark that F (C2) is a hypersurface { (x, y, z) ∈ C3 : z2 − zx− x3 = 0 } in C3.

Abstract:One of the main problems in complex analysis has been to determine when two open sets D1, D2 in Cn are biholomorphically equivalent. In [26] Poincaré studied perturbations of the unit ball B2 in C2 of a particular kind, and found necessary and sufficient conditions on a first order perturbation that the perturbed domain be biholomorphically equivalent to B2. Recently Burns, Shnider and Wells [7] (cf. also Chern-Moser [9]) have studied the deformations of strongly pseudoconvex manifolds. They proved that there is no finite-dimensional deformation theory for M if one keeps track of the boundary.

Abstract:The boundary rigidity problem is a classical question from Riemannian geometry: if $(M, g)$ is a Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary, is the geometry of $M$ determined up to isometry by the metric $d_g$ induced on the boundary $\partial M$? In this paper, we consider a discrete version of this problem: can we determine the combinatorial type of a finite cube complex from its boundary distances? As in the continuous case, reconstruction is not possible in general, but one expects a positive answer under suitable contractibility and non-positive curvature conditions. Indeed, in two dimensions Haslegrave gave a positive answer to this question when the complex is a finite quadrangulation of the disc with no internal vertices of degree less than $4$. We prove a $3$-dimensional generalisation of this result: the combinatorial type of a finite CAT(0) cube complex with an embedding in $\mathbb{R}^3$ can be reconstructed from its boundary distances. Additionally, we prove a direct strengthening of Haslegrave's result: the combinatorial type of any finite 2-dimensional CAT(0) cube complex can be reconstructed from its boundary distances.

Abstract:Strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds are boundaries of Stein varieties with isolated normal singularities. We introduce a series of new invariant plurigenera δ m ,m ∈ ℤ+ for a strongly pseudoconvex CR manifold. The main purpose of this paper is to present the following result: Let X 1 and X 2 be two compact strongly pseudoconvex embeddable CR manifolds of dimension 2n−1 ⩾ 3. If there is a non-constant CR morphism from X 1 to X 2, then δ m (X 2) ⩽ δ m (X 1) where δ m (X i ) is the plurigeneus of X i (see Definition 2.4).
