Abstract:We construct an example of a cork that remains exotic after taking a connected sum with $S^2 \times S^2$. Combined with a work of Akbulut-Ruberman, this implies the existence of an exotic pair of contractible 4-manifolds which remains absolutely exotic after taking a connected sum with $S^2 \times S^2$.

Abstract:In this brief note, we show that there exist smooth 4-manifolds (with nonempty boundary) containing pairs of exotically knotted 2-spheres that remain exotic after one (either external or internal) stabilization. It follows that the ``one is enough'' theorem of Auckly-Kim-Melvin-Ruberman-Schwartz does not hold for closed surfaces whose homology classes are characteristic.

Abstract:We show that many explicit examples of exotic pairs of surfaces in a smooth 4-manifold become smoothly isotopic after one external stabilization with $S^2\times S^2$ or $CP^2\#\overline{CP^2}$. Our results cover surfaces produced by rim-surgery, twist-rim-surgery, annulus rim-surgery, as well as infinite families of nullhomologus surfaces and examples with non-cyclic fundamental group of the complement. A special attention is given to the identification of the stabilizing manifold and its dependence on the choices in the construction of the surface. The main idea of this note is given by relating internal and external stabilization, and most of the results, but not all, are proved using this relation. Moreover, we show that the 2-links in the exotic family from the recent work of Bais, Benyahia, Malech and Torres are brunnian, under some additional assumptions about the construction.

Abstract:Wall-type stabilization problems investigate the collapse of exotic 4-dimensional phenomena under stabilization operations (e.g., taking connected sums with $S^2 \times S^2$). We propose an elementary approach to these problems, providing a construction of exotic 4-manifolds and knotted surfaces that are candidates to remain exotic after stabilization -- including examples in the setting of closed, simply connected 4-manifolds. As a proof of concept, we show this construction yields exotic surfaces in the 4-ball that remain exotic after (internal) stabilization, detected by the cobordism maps on universal Khovanov homology. We conclude by comparing these Khovanov-theoretic obstructions for surfaces to the Floer-theoretic counterparts for exotic 4-manifolds obtained as their branched covers, suggesting a bridge via Lin's spectral sequence from Bar-Natan homology to involutive monopole Floer homology.

Abstract:We prove a localization theorem for exotic diffeomorphisms, showing that every diffeomorphism of a compact simply-connected 4-manifold that is isotopic to the identity after stabilizing with one copy of $S^2 \times S^2$, is smoothly isotopic to a diffeomorphism that is supported on a contractible submanifold. For those that require more than one copy of $S^2 \times S^2$, we prove that the diffeomorphism can be isotoped to one that is supported in a submanifold homotopy equivalent to a wedge of 2-spheres, with null-homotopic inclusion map. We investigate the implications of these results by applying them to known exotic diffeomorphisms.

Abstract:We construct closed, aspherical, smooth 4-manifolds that are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic. These provide counterexamples to a smooth analog of the Borel conjecture in dimension four. Our technique is to apply the `reflection group trick' of the first author to pairs of exotic 4-manifolds with boundary constructed by Hayden and Piccirillo.

Abstract:We prove that the examples by Smith and McMullen-Taubes provide infinitely many counterexamples to one direction of Donaldson's 4-6 question and the closely related Stabilising Conjecture. These are the first known counterexamples. In the other direction, we show that the Gromov-Witten invariants of two simply-connected closed symplectic $4$-manifolds, whose products with $(S^2,\omega_{\text{std}})$ are deformation equivalent, agree. In particular, when $b_2^+ \geq 2$, these $4$-manifolds have the same Seiberg-Witten invariants. Furthermore, one can replace $(S^2,\omega_{\text{std}})$ by $(S^2,\omega_{\text{std}})^k$ for any $k \geq 1$ in both results.

Exotically knotted closed surfaces from Donaldson's diagonalization for families

Abstract:We introduce a method to detect exotic surfaces without explicitly using a smooth 4-manifold invariant or an invariant of a 4-manifold-surface pair in the construction. Our main tools are two versions of families (Seiberg-Witten) generalizations of Donaldson's diagonalization theorem, including a real and families version of the diagonalization. This leads to an example of a pair of exotically knotted $\mathbb{R}P^2$'s embedded in a closed 4-manifold whose complements are diffeomorphic, making it the first example of a non-orientable surface with this property. In particular, any invariant of a 4-manifold-surface pair (including invariants from real Seiberg-Witten theory such as Miyazawa's invariant) fails to detect such an exotic $\mathbb{R} P^2$. One consequence of our construction reveals that non-effective embeddings of corks can still be useful in pursuit of exotica. Precisely, starting with an embedding of a cork $C$ in certain a 4-manifold $X$ where the cork-twist does not change the diffeomorphism type of $X$, we give a construction that provides examples of exotically knotted spheres and $\mathbb{R}P^2$'s with diffeomorphic complements in $ C \# S^2 \times S^2 \subset X \# S^2 \times S^2$ or $C \# \mathbb{C}P^2 \subset X \# \mathbb{C}P^2 $. In another direction, we provide infinitely many exotically knotted embeddings of orientable surfaces, closed surface links, and 3-spheres with diffeomorphic complements in once stabilized corks, and show some of these surfaces survive arbitrarily many internal stabilizations. By combining similar methods with Gabai's 4D light-bulb theorem, we also exhibit arbitrarily large difference between algebraic and geometric intersections of certain family of 2-spheres, embedded in a 4-manifold.

From diffeomorphisms to exotic phenomena in small 4-manifolds

Abstract:We provide an approach to study exotic phenomena in relatively small 4-manifolds that captures many different exotic behaviors under one umbrella. These phenomena include exotic smooth structures on 4-manifolds with $b_2=1$, examples of strong corks, and exotic codimension-$1$ embeddings into $\mathbb{C} P^2 \# - \mathbb{C} P^2$ that survive external stabilization. We also give a new way to detect a homeomorphism of a 4-manifold that is not topologically isotopic to any diffeomorphism and give lower bounds of relative genera of certain knots. Our primary tools are constraints on diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds obtained from families Seiberg-Witten theory.

Abstract:We call a non-trivial homology sphere a Kirby-Ramanujam sphere if it bounds both a homology plane and a Mazur or Poénaru manifold. In 1980, Kirby found the first example by proving that the boundary of the Ramanujam surface bounds a Mazur manifold and it has remained a single example since then. By tracing their initial step, we provide the first additional examples and we present three infinite families of Kirby-Ramanujam spheres. Also, we show that one of our families of Kirby-Ramanujam spheres is diffeomorphic to the splice of two certain families of Brieskorn spheres. Since this family of Kirby-Ramanujam spheres bound contractible $4$-manifolds, they lie in the class of the trivial element in the homology cobordism group; however, both splice components are separately linearly independent in that group.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a complex projective variety with only canonical singularities and with trivial canonical bundle. Let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. Assume that the pair $(X,L)$ is the flat limit of a family of smooth polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds. Assume that for each singular point $x \in X$ there exist a Kahler-Einstein Fano manifold $Z$ and a positive integer $q$ dividing $K_Z$ such that $-\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ is very ample and such that the germ $(X,x)$ is locally analytically isomorphic to a neighborhood of the vertex of the blow-down of the zero section of $\frac{1}{q}K_{Z}$. We prove that up to biholomorphism, the unique weak Ricci-flat Kahler metric representing $2\pi c_1(L)$ on $X$ is asymptotic at a polynomial rate near $x$ to the natural Ricci-flat Kahler cone metric on $\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ constructed using the Calabi ansatz. In particular, our result applies if $(X, \mathcal{O}(1))$ is a nodal quintic threefold in $\mathbb{P}^4$. This provides the first known examples of compact Ricci-flat manifolds with non-orbifold isolated conical singularities.

Abstract:We construct families of pairs of Heegaard splittings that must be stabilized several times to become equivalent. The first such pair differs only by their orientation. These are genus n splittings of a closed 3-manifold that must be stabilized at least n-2 times to become equivalent. The second is a pair of genus n splittings of a manifold with toroidal boundary that must be stabilized at least n-4 times to become equivalent. The last example is a pair of genus n splittings of a closed 3-manifold that must be stabilized at least ${1/2}n -3$ times to become equivalent, regardless of their orientations. All of these examples are splittings of manifolds that are obtained from simpler manifolds by gluing along incompressible surfaces via "sufficiently complicated" maps.

Abstract:Kronheimer-Mrowka recently proved that the Dehn twist along a 3-sphere in the neck of $K3\#K3$ is not smoothly isotopic to the identity. This provides a new example of self-diffeomorphisms on 4-manifolds that are isotopic to the identity in the topological category but not smoothly so. (The first such examples were given by Ruberman.) In this paper, we use the Pin(2)-equivariant Bauer-Furuta invariant to show that this Dehn twist is not smoothly isotopic to the identity even after a single stabilization (connected summing with the identity map on $S^{2}\times S^{2}$). This gives the first example of exotic phenomena on simply connected smooth 4-manifolds that do not disappear after a single stabilization.

Abstract:In this article, we give new means of constructing and distinguishing closed exotic four-manifolds. Using Heegaard Floer homology, we define new closed four-manifold invariants that are distinct from the Seiberg--Witten and Bauer--Furuta invariants and can remain distinct in covers. Our constructions include exotic definite manifolds with fundamental group $\mathbb Z/2$, infinite families of exotic manifolds that are related by knot surgeries on Alexander polynomial 1 knots, and exotic manifolds that contain square-zero spheres.

Exotic Dehn twists on 4-manifolds

Abstract:We initiate the study of exotic Dehn twists along 3-manifolds $\neq S^3$ inside $4$-manifolds, which produces the first known examples of exotic diffeomorphisms of contractible 4-manifolds, more generally of definite 4-manifolds, and exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds with $\neq S^3$ boundary that survive after one stabilization. We also construct the smallest closed 4-manifold known to support an exotic diffeomorphism. These exotic diffeomorphisms are the Dehn twists along certain Seifert fibered 3-manifolds. As a consequence, we get loops of diffeomorphisms of 3-manifolds that topologically extend to some 4-manifolds $X$ but not smoothly so, implying the non-surjectivity of $\pi_1(\mathrm{Diff}(X)) \to \pi_1(\mathrm{Homeo}(X))$. Our method uses $2$-parameter families Seiberg-Witten theory over $\mathbb{RP}^2$, while known methods to detect exotic diffeomorphisms used $1$-parameter families gauge-theoretic invariants. Using a similar strategy, we construct a new kind of exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds, given as commutators of diffeomorphisms.

Abstract:We show that the Khovanov-Rozansky $\mathfrak{gl}_2$ skein lasagna module distinguishes the exotic pair of knot traces $X_{-1}(-5_2)$ and $X_{-1}(P(3,-3,-8))$, an example first discovered by Akbulut. This gives the first analysis-free proof of the existence of exotic compact orientable $4$-manifolds. We also present a family of exotic knot traces that seem not directly recoverable from gauge/Floer-theoretic methods. Along the way, we present new explicit calculations of the Khovanov skein lasagna modules, and we define lasagna generalizations of the Lee homology and Rasmussen $s$-invariant, which are of independent interest. Other consequences of our work include a slice obstruction of knots in $4$-manifolds with nonvanishing skein lasagna module, a sharp shake genus bound for some knots from the lasagna $s$-invariant, and a construction of induced maps on Khovanov homology for cobordisms in $k\mathbb{CP}^2$.

Abstract:Kreck proved that two $2q$-manifolds are stably diffeomorphic if and only if they admit normally bordant normal $(q-1)$-smoothings over the same normal $(q-1)$-type $(B,\xi)$. We show that stable diffeomorphism can be replaced by diffeomorphism if the normal smoothings have isomorphic Q-forms (which consists of the intersection form of the manifold and the induced homomorphism on $H_q$), when the manifolds are simply-connected, $q=2k$ is even and $H_q(B)$ is free. This proves a special case of Crowley's Q-form conjecture. The basis of the proof is the construction of an extended surgery obstruction associated to a normal bordism. As an application, we identify the inertia group of a $(2k-1)$-connected $4k$-manifold with the kernel of a certain bordism map. By the calculations of Senger-Zhang and earlier results, these kernels are now known in all cases. For $k=2,4$, the combination of these results determines the inertia groups. We also obtain, for a simply-connected $4k$-manifold $M$ with normal $(q-1)$-type $(B,\xi)$ such that $H_q(B)$ is free, an algebraic description of the stable class of $M$, that is, the set of diffeomorphism classes of manifolds stably diffeomorphic to $M$. Using this description, we explicitly compute the stable class of manifolds $M$ with rank-$2$ hyperbolic intersection form.

Abstract:We produce examples of pairwise non-diffeomorphic closed irreducible 4-manifolds with non-trivial free abelian fundamental group of rank less than three and small Euler characteristic. These exotic smooth structures become standard after taking a connected sum with a single copy of $S^2\times S^2$. The contributions of this paper include an explicit mechanism to computate the equivariant intersection form of 4-manifolds that are obtained via torus surgeries and a new stabilization result concerning exotic smooth structures with arbitrary fundamental group.
