Abstract:A digraph $H$ is called ubiquitous if every digraph that contains arbitrarily many vertex-disjoint copies of $H$ also contains infinitely many vertex-disjoint copies of $H$. We study oriented double rays, that is, digraphs $H$ whose underlying undirected graphs are double rays. Calling a vertex of an oriented double ray a turn if it has in-degree or out-degree 2, we prove that an oriented double ray with at least one turn is ubiquitous if and only if it has a (finite) odd number of turns. It remains an open problem to determine whether the consistently oriented double ray is ubiquitous.

A characterization of uniquely representable two-directional orthogonal ray graphs

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a characterization of uniquely representable two-directional orthogonal ray graphs, which are defined as the intersection graphs of rightward and downward rays. The collection of these rays is called a representation of the graph. Two-directional orthogonal ray graphs are equivalent to several well-studied classes of graphs, including complements of circular-arc graphs with clique cover number two. Normalized representations of two-directional orthogonal ray graphs, where the positions of certain rays are determined by neighborhood containment relations, can be obtained from the normalized representations of circular-arc graphs. However, the normalized representations are not necessarily unique, even when considering only the relative positions of the rays. Recent studies indicate that two-directional orthogonal ray graphs share similar characterizations to interval graphs. Hanlon (1982) and Fishburn (1985) characterized uniquely representable interval graphs by introducing the notion of a buried subgraph. Following their characterization, we define buried subgraphs of two-directional orthogonal ray graphs and prove that their absence is a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph to be uniquely representable.

Abstract:Suppose that $D$ is a digraph, and $H$ is a multi-digraph on $k$ vertices with $q$ arcs. Let $\mathcal{P}(D)$ be the set of paths in a digraph $D$. An $H$-subdivision $(f,g)$ in a digraph $D$ is a pair of bijections $f : V(H)\rightarrow V(D)$ and $g : A(H) \rightarrow \mathcal{P}(D)$ such that for every arc $uv\in A(H)$, $g(uv)$ is a path from $f(u)$ to $f (v)$, and distinct arcs map into internally vertex disjoint paths in $D$. Further, $D$ is arbitrary $H$-linked if any $k$ distinct vertices in $D$ can be extended to an $H$-subdivision $(f,g)$, and the length of each subdivision path can be specified as a number of at least four. In this paper, we prove that there exists a positive integer $n_0 = n_0(k,q)$ such that if $D$ is an oriented graph of order $n\geq n_0$ with minimum semi-degree at least $(3n+3k+6q-3)/8$, then $D$ is arbitrary $H$-linked. This minimum semi-degree is sharp. Also, we refine the bounds on the semi-degree of sufficiently large arbitrary $k$-linked oriented graphs, sufficiently large arbitrary $l$-ordered oriented graphs, and sufficiently large oriented graphs with disjoint cycles of prescribed lengths containing prescribed arcs.

Abstract:Let $D$ be an arc-colored digraph. The arc number $a(D)$ of $D$ is defined as the number of arcs of $D$. The color number $c(D)$ of $D$ is defined as the number of colors assigned to the arcs of $D$. A rainbow triangle in $D$ is a directed triangle in which every pair of arcs have distinct colors. Let $f(D)$ be the smallest integer such that if $c(D)\geq f(D)$, then $D$ contains a rainbow triangle. In this paper we obtain $f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})$ and $f(T_n)$, where $\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n}$ is a complete digraph of order $n$ and $T_n$ is a strongly connected tournament of order $n$. Moreover we characterize the arc-colored complete digraph $\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n}$ with $c(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})=f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})-1$ and containing no rainbow triangles. We also prove that an arc-colored digraph $D$ on $n$ vertices contains a rainbow triangle when $a(D)+c(D)\geq a(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})+f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})$, which is a directed extension of the undirected case.

Abstract:Halin proved that every graph with an end $\omega$ containing infinitely many pairwise disjoint rays admits a subdivision of the infinite quarter-grid as a subgraph where all rays from that subgraph belong to $\omega$. We will prove a corresponding statement for digraphs, that is, we will prove that every digraph that has an end with infinitely many pairwise disjoint directed rays contains a subdivision of a grid-like digraph all of whose directed rays belong to that end.

Abstract:A relational structure R is ultrahomogeneous if every isomorphism of finite induced substructures of R extends to an automorphism of R. We classify the ultrahomogeneous finite binary relational structures with one asymmetric binary relation and arbitrarily many unary relations. In other words, we classify the finite vertex-colored oriented ultrahomogeneous graphs. The classification comprises several general methods with which directed graphs can be combined or extended to create new ultrahomogeneous graphs. Together with explicitly given exceptions, we obtain exactly all vertex-colored oriented ultrahomogeneous graphs this way. Our main technique is a technical tool that characterizes precisely under which conditions two binary relational structures with disjoint unary relations can be combined to form a larger ultrahomogeneous structure.

Abstract:Which conditions ensure that a digraph contains all oriented paths of some given length, or even a all oriented trees of some given size, as a subgraph? One possible condition could be that the host digraph is a tournament of a certain order. In arbitrary digraphs and oriented graphs, conditions on the chromatic number, on the edge density, on the minimum outdegree and on the minimum semidegree have been proposed. In this survey, we review the known results, and highlight some open questions in the area.

A star-comb lemma for infinite digraphs

Abstract:The star-comb lemma is a fundamental tool in infinite graph theory, which states that for any infinite set $U$ of vertices in a connected graph $G$ there exists either a subdivided infinite star in $G$ with all leaves in $U$, or an infinite comb in $G$ with all teeth in $U$. In this paper, we elaborate a pendant of the star-comb lemma for directed graphs. More precisely, we prove that for any infinite set $U$ of vertices in a strongly connected directed graph $D$, there exists a strongly connected substructure of $D$ attached to infinitely many vertices of $U$ that is either shaped by a star or shaped by a comb, or is a chain of triangles.

On heroes in digraphs with forbidden induced forests

Abstract:We continue a line of research which studies which hereditary families of digraphs have bounded dichromatic number. For a class of digraphs $\mathcal{C}$, a hero in $\mathcal{C}$ is any digraph $H$ such that $H$-free digraphs in $\mathcal{C}$ have bounded dichromatic number. We show that if $F$ is an oriented star of degree at least five, the only heroes for the class of $F$-free digraphs are transitive tournaments. For oriented stars $F$ of degree exactly four, we show the only heroes in $F$-free digraphs are transitive tournaments, or possibly special joins of transitive tournaments. Aboulker et al. characterized the set of heroes of $\{H, K_{1} + \vec{P_{2}}\}$-free digraphs almost completely, and we show the same characterization for the class of $\{H, rK_{1} + \vec{P_{3}}\}$-free digraphs. Lastly, we show that if we forbid two "valid" orientations of brooms, then every transitive tournament is a hero for this class of digraphs.

Abstract:Distance-hereditary graphs are in important graph class in graph theory, as they are well-placed in the graph class hierarchy and permit many algorithmic results. We investigate structural and algorithmic advantages of a directed version of this well-researched graph class. Since the previously defined distance-hereditary digraphs do not permit a recursive structure, we define directed twin-distance-hereditary graphs, which can be constructed by several twin and pendant vertex operations analogously to undirected distance-hereditary graphs and which still preserves the distance hereditary property. We give a characterization by forbidden induced subdigraphs and place the class in a hierarchy comparing it to related classes. We further show algorithmic advantages concerning directed width parameters, directed graph coloring and some other well-known digraph problems which are NP-hard in general, but computable in polynomial or even linear time on twin-distance-hereditary digraphs. This includes computability of directed path-width and tree-width in linear time and the directed chromatic number in polynomial time. From our result that directed twin-distance-hereditary graphs have directed clique-width at most 3 it follows by Courcelle's theorem on directed clique-width that we can compute every graph problem describable in monadic second-order logic on quantification over vertices and vertex sets as well as some further problems like Hamiltonian Path/Cycle in polynomial time.

Abstract:We prove that if $D$ is a digraph of maximum outdegree and indegree at least $k$, and minimum semidegree at least $k/2$ that contains no oriented $4$-cycles, then $D$ contains each oriented tree $T$ with~$k$ arcs. This can be slightly improved if $T$ is either antidirected or an arborescence.

Abstract:Aboulker et al. proved that a digraph with large enough dichromatic number contains any fixed digraph as a subdivision. The dichromatic number of a digraph is the smallest order of a partition of its vertex set into acyclic induced subdigraphs. A digraph is dicritical if the removal of any arc or vertex decreases its dichromatic number. In this paper we give sufficient conditions on a dicritical digraph of large order or large directed girth to contain a given digraph as a subdivision. In particular, we prove that (i) for every integers $k,\ell$, large enough dicritical digraphs with dichromatic number $k$ contain an orientation of a cycle with at least $\ell$ vertices; (ii) there are functions $f,g$ such that for every subdivision $F^*$ of a digraph $F$, digraphs with directed girth at least $f(F^*)$ and dichromatic number at least $g(F)$ contain a subdivision of $F^*$, and if $F$ is a tree, then $g(F)=|V(F)|$; (iii) there is a function $f$ such that for every subdivision $F^*$ of $TT_3$ (the transitive tournament on three vertices), digraphs with directed girth at least $f(F^*)$ and minimum out-degree at least $2$ contain $F^*$ as a subdivision.

A star-comb lemma for finite digraphs

Abstract:It is well-known that for any set $U$ of vertices in a connected graph $G$ there is either a subdivided star in $G$ with a large number of leaves in $U$, or a comb in $G$ with a large number of teeth in $U$. In this paper we extend this property to directed graphs. More precisely, we prove that for any set $U$ of vertices in a strongly connected directed graph $D$, there exists a strongly connected substructure of $D$ attached to a large number of vertices in $U$ that is either shaped by a star or shaped by a comb.

Abstract:A class of acyclic digraphs $\mathscr{C}$ is linearly unavoidable if there exists a constant $c$ such that every digraph $D\in \mathscr{C}$ is contained in all tournaments of order $c\cdot |V(D)|$. The class of all acyclic digraphs is not linearly avoidable, and Fox, He, and Widgerson recently showed that this is not even the case for acyclic digraphs with bounded maximum degree. On the positive side, Thomason and Häggkvist proved that the class of oriented trees is linearly unavoidable. In this work, we generalize this result to acyclic digraphs obtained from an oriented tree by adding at most $k$ vertices, and $k$-blow-ups of oriented trees, for every fixed integer $k$. More precisely, we show that if $D$ is obtained from an oriented tree $F$ of order $n$ by adding $k$ universal vertices, then $D$ is contained in every tournament of order $2\cdot 3^{(k+1)(2k+1)} \cdot n$; and if $D$ is obtained from $F$ by replacing each vertex $u$ by an independent set $X_u$ of size $k$ and every arc $uv$ by all possible arcs from $X_u$ to $X_v$, then $D$ is contained in every tournament of order $2^{10+18k}k \cdot n$.

Unavoidable structures in infinite tournaments

Abstract:We prove a strong dichotomy result for countably-infinite oriented graphs; that is, we prove that for all countably-infinite oriented graphs $G$, either (i) there is a countably-infinite tournament $K$ such that $G\not\subseteq K$, or (ii) every countably-infinite tournament contains a \emph{spanning} copy of $G$. Furthermore, we are able to give a concise characterization of such oriented graphs. Our characterization becomes even simpler in the case of transitive acyclic oriented graphs (i.e. strict partial orders). For uncountable oriented graphs, we are able to extend the dichotomy result mentioned above to all regular cardinals $\kappa$; however, we are only able to provide a concise characterization in the case when $\kappa=\aleph_1$.

Graphs Identifiable by Degree Sequence and Chromatic Number

Abstract:Unigraphs are graphs identifiable up to isomorphism from their degree sequences. Given a class $\mathcal{A}$ of graphs, we define the class of $\mathcal{A}$-unigraphs to be graphs identifiable from degree sequence and membership in $\mathcal{A}$. While these classes are often not hereditary, we provide characterizations of the largest hereditary subclass contained in the bipartite-unigraphs, the $k$-partite unigraphs, the perfect-unigraphs, and the chordal-unigraphs. We also characterize the largest hereditary subclass contained in the bipartite-unigraphs in terms of structure, degree sequence, and a partial order on degree sequences due to Rao. Lastly, we show that all unigraphs $G$ satisfy the bound $\chi(G) \le \omega(G) + 1$ and are hence apex-perfect graphs.
