Abstract:Building on work of M. Müger and L. Tuset, we reduce the Mathieu conjecture, formulated by O. Mathieu in 1997, for $SU(N)$ to a simpler conjecture in purely abelian terms. We sketch a similar reduction for $SO(N)$. The proofs rely on Euler-style parametrizations of these groups, which we discuss including proofs.

Abstract:We present an explicit integration formula for the Haar integral on a compact connected Lie group. This formula relies on a known decomposition of a compact connected simple Lie group into symplectic leaves, when one views the group as a Poisson Lie group. In this setting the Haar integral is constructed using the Kostant harmonic volume form on the corresponding flag manifold, and explicit coordinates are known for these invariant differential forms. The formula obtained is related to one found by Reshetikhin-Yakimov. Using our integration formula, we reduce the Mathieu conjecture to two stronger conjectures about Laurent polynomials in several complex variables with polynomial coefficients in several real variable polynomials. In these stronger conjectures there is no reference to Lie group theory.

Abstract:Dumortier and Roussarie proposed a conjecture in their paper (2009, Discrete Con. Dyn. Sys., 2,723-781): For any \begin{document}$ q\in {\mathbb{N}} $\end{document} , the Abelian integrals \begin{document}$ J_{2j+1}(h) = \int_{\gamma_h}x^{2j-1}\,\mathrm dy $\end{document} , \begin{document}$ j = 0, 1, 2, \cdots, q $\end{document} , form a strict Chebyshev system on intervals \begin{document}$ h\in (0, \frac{1}{2}] $\end{document} , where \begin{document}$ \gamma_h = \{(x, y)| \mathrm e^{-2y}(y+\frac{1}{2}-x^2) = h\} $\end{document} . If this conjecture holds, then they obtain the precise upper bound of the number of limit cycles that appear near a slow-fast Hopf point of any codimension. In the present paper we develop a method to estimate the number of zeros of Abelian integrals and prove this conjecture.

Abstract:This work computes the asymptotics of the non-integer moments of the logarithmic derivative of characteristic polynomials of matrices from the $SO(2N+1)$ ensemble. It follows from work of Alvarez and Snaith who computed the asymptotics of the integer moments of the same statistic over both $SO(N)$ ensembles as well as the $USp(2N)$ ensemble.

Abstract:We give an asymptotic formula with power saving error term for the twisted first moment of symmetric square L-functions on GL(3) in the level aspect. As applications, we obtain non-vanishing results as well as lower bounds of the expected order of magnitude for all even moments, supporting the random matrix model for a unitary ensemble. Besides the GL(3) Kuznetsov formula, the ingredients include detailed local computations at ramified places, including root numbers and orthonormalization of oldforms and Eisenstein series.

Moments and non-vanishing of $L$-functions over thin subgroups

Abstract:We obtain an asymptotic formula for all moments of Dirichlet $L$-functions $L(1,\chi)$ modulo $p$ when averaged over a subgroup of characters $\chi$ of size $(p-1)/d$ with $\varphi(d)=o(\log p)$. Assuming the infinitude of Mersenne primes, the range of our result is optimal and improves and generalises the previous result of S. Louboutin and M. Munsch (2022) for second moments. We also use our ideas to get an asymptotic formula for the second moment of $L(1/2,\chi)$ over subgroups of characters of similar size. This leads to non-vanishing results in this family where the proportion obtained depends on the height of the smallest rational number lying in the dual group. Additionally, we prove that, in both cases, we can take much smaller subgroups for almost all primes $p$. Our method relies on pointwise and average estimates on small solutions of linear congruences which in turn leads us to use and modify some results for product sets of Farey fractions.

Abstract:The moments of the coefficients of elliptic curve L-functions are related to numerous arithmetic problems. Rosen and Silverman proved a conjecture of Nagao relating the first moment of one-parameter families satisfying Tate's conjecture to the rank of the corresponding elliptic surface over Q(T); one can also construct families of moderate rank by finding families with large first moments. Michel proved that if j(T) is not constant, then the second moment of the family is of size p^2 + O(p^(3/2)); these two moments show that for suitably small support the behavior of zeros near the central point agree with that of eigenvalues from random matrix ensembles, with the higher moments impacting the rate of convergence. In his thesis, Miller noticed a negative bias in the second moment of every one-parameter family of elliptic curves over the rationals whose second moment had a calculable closed-form expression, specifically the first lower order term which does not average to zero is on average negative. This Bias Conjecture is confirmed for many families; however, these are highly non-generic families whose resulting Legendre sums can be determined. Inspired by the recent successes by Yang-Hui He, Kyu-Hwan Lee, Thomas Oliver, Alexey Pozdnyakov and others in investigations of murmurations of elliptic curve coefficients with machine learning techniques, we pose a similar problem for trying to understand the Bias Conjecture. As a start to this program, we numerically investigate the Bias Conjecture for a family whose bias is positive for half the primes. Since the numerics do not offer conclusive evidence that negative bias for the other half is enough to overwhelm the positive bias, the Bias Conjecture cannot be verified for the family.

Abstract:We compute moments of $L$-functions associated to the polynomial family of Artin--Schreier covers over $\mathbb{F}_q$, where $q$ is a power of a prime $p>2$, when the size of the finite field is fixed and the genus of the family goes to infinity. More specifically, we compute the $k^{\text{th}}$ moment for a large range of values of $k$, depending on the sizes of $p$ and $q$. We also compute the second moment in absolute value of the polynomial family, obtaining an exact formula with a lower order term, and confirming the unitary symmetry type of the family.

Let $\chi$ be a unitary character, $s\in \mathbb{C}$ and $W$ a symplectic vector space over a non-archimedean field with symmetry group $G(W)$. Denote by $I(\chi,s)$ the degenerate principal series representation of $G(W\oplus W)$. Pulling back $I(\chi,s)$ along the natural embedding $G(W)\times G(W)\hookrightarrow G(W\oplus W)$ gives a representation $I_{W,W}(\chi,s)$ of $G(W)\times G(W)$. Let $\pi$ be an irreducible smooth complex representation of $G(W)$. We then prove \[\dim _\mathbb{C}\mathrm{Hom}_{G(W)\times G(W)}(I_{W,W}(\chi,s),\pi\otimes \pi^\lor)=1.\] We also give analogous statements for $W$ orthogonal or unitary. This gives in particular a new proof of the conservation relation of the local Theta correspondence for symplectic-orthogonal and unitary dual pairs.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the smooth cubic moments vanish for the Hecke--Maass cusp forms, which gives a new case of the random wave conjecture. In fact, we can prove a polynomial decay for the smooth cubic moments, while for the smooth second moment (i.e. QUE) no rate of decay is known unconditionally for general Hecke--Maass cusp forms. The proof bases on various estimates of moments of central $L$-values. We prove the Lindelöf on average bound for the first moment of $\rm GL(3)\times GL(2)$ $L$-functions in short intervals of the subconvexity strength length, and the convexity strength upper bound for the mixed moment of $\rm GL(2)$ and the triple product $L$-functions. In particular, we prove new subconvexity bounds of certain $\rm GL(3)\times GL(2)$ $L$-functions.

Abstract:We investigate the moment problem and Jacobi matrix associated -- by the operator theoretic framework of the semilocal trace formula -- to each finite set $S$ of places of $\mathbb Q$ containing the archimedean place. The measure is given by the absolute value squared of the product over $S$ of local factors restricted to the critical line. We treat the case $S=\{p,\infty\}$, where a single prime $p$ is adjoined to the archimedean place. We find that all the key ingredients such as the moments, the orthogonal polynomials and the Jacobi matrices can be expressed as power series in terms of the parameter $q:=1/p$. We show that the series which appear for the moments themselves are Lambert series. The study of the $q$-series for the coefficients of the Jacobi matrix, and for the associated orthogonal polynomials reveals an intriguing integrality result: all those coefficients belong to the ring $\mathbb Z[\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}]$ obtained by adjoining $1 / \sqrt{2}$ to the ring of integers. The main result of this paper is the conceptual explanation of this integrality property using Catalan numbers.

Abstract:We prove quantitative versions of Borel and Harish-Chandra's theorems on reduction theory for arithmetic groups. Firstly, we obtain polynomial bounds on the lengths of reduced integral vectors in any rational representation of a reductive group. Secondly, we obtain polynomial bounds in the construction of fundamental sets for arithmetic subgroups of reductive groups, as the latter vary in a real conjugacy class of subgroups of a fixed reductive group. Our results allow us to apply the Pila--Zannier strategy to the Zilber--Pink conjecture for the moduli space of principally polarised abelian surfaces. Building on our previous paper, we prove this conjecture under a Galois orbits hypothesis. Finally, we establish the Galois orbits hypothesis for points corresponding to abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication, under certain geometric conditions.
