Abstract:A subcomplex X≤C of a simplicial complex is strongly rigid if every locally injective, simplicial map X→C is the restriction of a unique automorphism of C . Aramayona and the second author proved that the curve complex of an orientable surface can be exhausted by finite strongly rigid sets. The Hatcher sphere complex is an analog of the curve complex for isotopy classes of essential spheres in a connect sum of n copies of S1×S2 . We show that there is an exhaustion of the sphere complex by finite strongly rigid sets for all n≥3 and that when n=2 the sphere complex does not have finite rigid sets.

Abstract:We introduce a semi-algebraic structure on the set  of all isotopy classes of non-separating simple closed curves in any compact oriented surface and show that the structure is finitely generated. As a consequence, we produce a natural finite dimensional linear representation of the mapping class group of the surface. Applications to the Teichmüller space, Thurston's measured lamination space, the harmonic Beltrami differentials, and the first cohomology groups of the surface are discussed.

We formulate explicitly the length squares of the higher fundamental forms andthe higher curvatures for superminimal surfaces in terms of the metric of the surface and the Khlerangle of the immersion. Particularly, some curvature pinching theorems for minimal 2-spheres in acomplex projective space are given and a new characterization of the Veronese sequence is obtained.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is twofold. First of all, we confirm a few basic criteria of the finiteness of real forms of a given smooth complex projective variety, in terms of the Galois cohomology set of the discrete part of the automorphism group, the cone conjecture and the topological entropy. We then apply them to show that a smooth complex projective surface has at most finitely many non-isomorphic real forms unless it is either rational or a non-minimal surface birational to either a K3 surface or an Enriques surface. In the second part of the paper, we construct an Enriques surface whose blow-up at one point admits infinitely many non-isomorphic real forms. This answers a question of Kondo to us and also shows the three exceptional cases really occur.

Abstract:We prove that the separated curve complex of a closed orientable surface ofgenus g is (g-3)-connected. We also obtain a connectivity property for aseparated curve complex of the open surface that is obtained by removing afinite set from a closed one, but it is then assumed that the removed set isendowed with a partition and that the separating curves respect that partition.These connectivity statements have implications for the algebraic topology ofthe moduli space of curves.

Abstract:A rational function on a real algebraic curve $C$ is called separating if it takes real values only at real points. Such a function defines a covering $\mathbb R C\to\mathbb{RP}^1$. Let $c_1,\dots,c_r$ be connected components of $\mathbb R C$. M. Kummer and K. Shaw defined the separating semigroup of $C$ as the set of all sequences $(d_1(f),\dots,d_r(f))$ where $f$ is a separating function and $d_i(f)$ is the degree of the restriction of $f$ to $c_i$. In the present paper we describe the separating semigroups of all genus 4 curves. For the proofs we consider the canonical embedding of $C$ into a quadric $X$ in $\mathbb P^3$ and apply Abel's theorem to 1-forms obtained as Poincaré residues at $C$ of certain meromorphic 2-forms on $X$.

Uniform hyperbolicity of nonseparating curve graphs of nonorientable surfaces

Abstract:Let $N$ be a connected finite type nonorientable surface with or without boundary components and punctures. We prove that the graph of nonseparating curves of $N$ is connected and Gromov hyperbolic with a constant which does not depend on the topological type of the surface by using the bicorn curves introduced by Przytycki and Sisto. The proof is based on the argument by Rasmussen on the uniform hyperbolicity of graphs of nonseparating curves for finite type orientable surfaces.

Abstract:Using lattice theory, Hulek and Schütt proved that for every $m\in\mathbb{Z}_+$ there exists a nine-dimensional family $\mathcal{F}_m$ of K3 surfaces covering Enriques surfaces having an elliptic pencil with a rational bisection of arithmetic genus $m$. We present a purely geometrical lattice free construction of these surfaces, that allows us to prove that generically the mentioned bisections are nodal. Moreover, we show that, for every $m\in\mathbb{Z}_+$, the very general Enriques surface covered by a K3 surface in $\mathcal{F}_m$ admits a countable set of nodal rational curves of arithmetic genus $(4k^2-4k+1)m+4k^2-4k$ for every $k\in\mathbb{Z}_+$, that form a rank 8 subgroup of the automorphism group of the surface. As an application, we compute the linear class of the $n$-torsion multisection for every $n\in\mathbb{N}$ for a general rational elliptic surface.

Abstract:We give necessary and sufficient conditions on the curvature and the torsion of a regular curve of the space forms $\h^3$ and $\s^3$ to be contained in a totally umbilical surface. In case that the curve has constant torsion, we obtain the value of the curvature of the curve. Also numerical pictures of these curves are shown.

Abstract:In the complex of curves of a closed orientable surface of genus $g,$ $\mathcal{C}(S_g),$ a preferred finite set of geodesics between any two vertices, called \emph{efficient geodesics} introduced by Birman, Margalit, and Menasco in \cite{birman_margalit_menasco_2016}. The main tool used to establish the existence of efficient geodesics was a \emph{dot graph}, which recorded the intersection pattern of a reference arc with the simple closed curves associated with a geodesic path. The idea behind the construction was that a geodesic that is not initially efficient contains shapes in its corresponding dot graph. These shapes then correspond to surgeries that reduce the intersection with the reference arc. In this paper, we show that the efficient geodesic algorithm is able to be restricted to the non-separating curve complex; the proof of this will involve analysis of the dot graph and its corresponding surgeries. Moreover, we demonstrate that given any geodesic in the complex of curves we may obtain an efficient geodesic whose vertices, with the possible exception of the endpoints, are all nonseparating curves.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that if two germs of plane curves ( C , 0) and $$(C',0)$$ ( C ′ , 0 ) with at least one singular branch are equivalent by a (real) smooth diffeomorphism, then C is complex isomorphic to $$C'$$ C ′ or to $$\overline{C'}$$ C ′ ̄ . A similar result was shown by Ephraim for irreducible hypersurfaces before, but his proof is not constructive. Indeed, we show that the complex isomorphism is given by the Taylor series of the diffeomorphism. We also prove an analogous result for the case of non-irreducible hypersurfaces containing an irreducible component that is non-factorable. Moreover, we provide a general overview of the different classifications of plane curve singularities.

Abstract:We consider surfaces embedded in a 3D contact sub-Riemannian manifold and the problem of the finiteness of the induced distance (i.e., the infimum of the length of horizontal curves that belong to the surface). Recently it has been proved that for a surface having the topology of a sphere embedded in a tight co-orientable structure, the distance is always finite. In this paper we study closed surfaces of genus larger than 1, proving that such surfaces can be embedded in such a way that the induced distance is finite or infinite. We then study the structural stability of the finiteness/not-finiteness of the distance.

Abstract:We introduce surfaces at infinity, a class of rational surfaces linked to curves with only one place at infinity. The cone of curves of these surfaces is finite polyhedral and minimally generated. We also introduce the $\delta$-semigroup of a surface at infinity and consider the set $\mathcal{S}$ of surfaces at infinity having the same $\delta$-semigroup. We study how the generators of the cone of curves of surfaces in $\mathcal{S}$ behave.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a rational surface obtained by blowing up at a configuration $\mathcal{C}$ of infinitely near points over a Hirzebruch surface $\mathbb{F}_\delta$. We prove that there exist two positive integers $a \leq b$ such that the cone of curves of $X$ is finite polyhedral and minimally generated when $\delta \geq a$, and the Cox ring of $X$ is finitely generated whenever $\delta \geq b$. The integers $a$ and $b$ depend only on a combinatorial object (a graph decorated with arrows) representing the strict transforms of the exceptional divisors, their intersections and those with the fibers and special section of $\mathbb{F}_\delta$.

Noncompact surfaces, triangulations and rigidity

Abstract:Every noncompact surface is shown to have a (3,6)-tight triangulation and a characterisation of such triangulations is given in terms of length constraints on the boundary walks of superfaces of a given genus. Applications are given to the generic rigidity of associated countable bar-joint frameworks in R^3. In particular, every noncompact surface has a (3,6)-tight triangulation that is minimally 3-rigid. A proof of Kerékjártó's classification of noncompact surfaces is also given.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that, for any $n\ge 3$, there exist infinitely many $r\in \N$ and for each of them a smooth, connected curve $C_r$ in $¶^r$ such that $C_r$ lies on exactly $n$ irreducible components of the Hilbert scheme $\hilb(¶^r)$. This is proven by reducing the problem to an analogous statement for the moduli of surfaces of general type.

Abstract:Let S be any orientable surface of infinite genus with a finite number of boundary components. In this work we consider the curve complex C(S), the nonseparating curve complex N(S) and the Schmutz graph G(S) of S. When all the topological ends of S carry genus, we show that all elements in the automorphism groups Aut(C(S)), Aut(N(S)) and Aut(G(S)) are geometric, i.e. these groups are naturally isomorphic to the extended mapping class group MCG*(S) of the infinite surface S. Finally, we study rigidity phenomena within Aut(C(S)) and Aut(N(S))
