Abstract:We studied equilibrium systems composed of wedge-shaped monodisperse molecules using hard-particle Monte Carlo simulations. Each model molecule was made up of six colinear tangent spheres with linearly decreasing diameters. Thus, the shape was unequivocally described by a single parameter $d$: the ratio of the smallest and largest diameters of the spheres. The phases of the systems were analyzed as a function of $d$ and packing density $\eta$. As interactions were purely of the excluded volume type, the emergent phases were governed solely by the configurational entropy. For $\eta < 0.5$, in addition to the isotropic liquid, we observed standard nematic and smectic A liquid crystalline phases. However, for $\eta > 0.5$, apart from the ordinary non-polar hexagonal crystal, three new frustrated polar crystalline phases with splay modulation appeared: antiferroelectric splay crystal ($\text{Cr}_\text{S}\text{P}_\text{A}$), antiferroelectric double splay crystal ($\text{Cr}_\text{DS}\text{P}_\text{A}$) and ferroelectric double splay crystal ($\text{Cr}_\text{DS}\text{P}_\text{F}$). All configurations were studied in terms of nematic, smectic, and hexatic order parameters, as well as the radial distribution function and the polarization correlation function.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore how wedge - shaped molecules can stabilize orientational order under pure entropy - driven conditions. In particular, at high packing fractions (\(\eta > 0.5\)), whether these molecules can form phases with long - range orientational order. The research mainly focuses on systems composed of hard wedge - shaped molecules, which are wider at one end and narrower at the other end and self - organize through excluded - volume interactions. The paper specifically examines the influence of the molecular shape parameter \(d\) (the ratio of the minimum diameter to the maximum diameter) and the packing fraction \(\eta\) on the phases, as well as the characteristics of local and global molecular order in these phases. Specifically, the paper studies the following problems through simulations: 1. **Influence of molecular shape on phases**: By changing the molecular shape parameter \(d\), study the phases formed by wedge - shaped molecules of different shapes at different packing fractions. 2. **Entropy - driven self - organization mechanism**: Explore whether wedge - shaped molecules can form phases with long - range orientational order only through entropy effects (i.e., excluded - volume interactions). 3. **Discovery of new phases**: Identify new phases that appear at high packing fractions, especially those crystalline phases with polarized orientation modulation, such as antiferroelectric split - crystal (Cr SPA), antiferroelectric double - split - crystal (Cr DSPA) and ferroelectric double - split - crystal (Cr DSPF). 4. **Local and global order**: Analyze the local and global molecular order in different phases, including nematic order parameters, smectic order parameters and hexagonal order parameters. Through these studies, the paper aims to gain an in - depth understanding of the complex phases formed by wedge - shaped molecules through entropy - driven self - organization in liquid - crystal systems and the physical mechanisms behind them.
