Abstract:Recent experiments have reported a novel splay nematic phase, which has alternating domains of positive and negative splay. To model this phase, previous studies have considered a 1D splay modulation of the director field, accompanied by a 1D modulation of polar order. When the flexoelectric coupling between splay and polar order becomes sufficiently strong, the uniform nematic state becomes unstable to the formation of a modulated phase. Here, we re-examine this theory in terms of a new approach to liquid crystal elasticity, which shows that pure splay deformation is double splay rather than planar single splay. Following that reasoning, we propose a structure with a 2D splay modulation of the director field, accompanied by a 2D modulation of polar order, and show that the 2D structure generally has a lower free energy than the 1D structure.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the structure and stability of a new type of splay nematic phase emerging in liquid crystal materials. Specifically, the paper explores whether the stable structure of this phase under different conditions is single splay or double splay, and the free - energy differences of these structures.
### Background
In recent years, a new splay nematic phase has been reported in experiments, which has regions with alternating positive and negative splay. To simulate this phase, previous studies considered a 1D splay - modulated director field, accompanied by a modulation of 1D polar order. When the flexoelectric coupling between splay and polar order becomes strong enough, the uniform nematic state becomes unstable and forms a modulated phase.
### Purpose of the paper
This paper re - examines this theory and adopts a new method of liquid - crystal elasticity theory, pointing out that the pure splay deformation is actually double splay rather than planar single splay. Based on this understanding, the author proposes a 2D splay - modulated director - field structure, accompanied by a modulation of 2D polar order, and shows that the 2D structure generally has lower free energy than the 1D structure.
### Main research contents
1. **Theoretical model**:
- Use Landau theory to construct the free - energy function, considering elastic effects such as splay, twist, and bend, as well as the flexoelectric coupling between splay and polar order.
- Analyze the free energy of single - splay and double - splay structures, and determine the stability of these two structures at different temperatures and parameters through numerical calculations.
2. **Numerical calculation**:
- Conduct detailed numerical simulations of single - splay and double - splay structures, solve the Euler - Lagrange equations, and obtain the optimal wavelength and free - energy density.
- Compare the free energy of single - splay and double - splay structures, and find that in most cases, the double - splay structure has lower free energy.
3. **Result discussion**:
- In the critical region, the free energy of the double - splay structure is significantly lower than that of the single - splay structure.
- As the temperature decreases, the single - splay structure becomes the most stable structure within a small temperature range, but then transforms into a double - splay structure.
- Eventually, at lower temperatures, the system will transition from the double - splay phase to the uniform polar phase.
### Conclusion
Through theoretical analysis and numerical calculation, the paper proves that in most cases, the double - splay structure is more stable than the single - splay structure, which provides an important theoretical basis for understanding the structure of the new splay nematic phase.
