Abstract:Measurement incompatibility stipulates the existence of quantum measurements that cannot be carried out simultaneously on single systems. We show that the set of input-output probabilities obtained from d-dimensional classical systems assisted with shared randomness is the same as the set obtained from d-dimensional quantum strategies restricted to compatible measurements with shared randomness in any communication scenario. Thus, measurement incompatibility is necessary for quantum advantage in communication, and any quantum advantage (with or without shared randomness) in communication acts as a witness to the incompatibility of the measurements at the receiver's end in a semi-device-independent way. We introduce a class of communication tasks - a general version of random access codes - to witness incompatibility of an arbitrary number of quantum measurements with arbitrary outcomes acting on d-dimensional systems, and provide generic upper bounds on the success metric of these tasks for compatible measurements. We identify all sets of three incompatible rank-one projective qubit measurements that random access codes can witness. Finally, we present the generic relationship between different sets of probability distributions - classical, quantum with or without shared randomness, and quantum restricted to compatible measurements with or without shared randomness - produced in communication scenarios.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: in communication tasks, whether measurement incompatibility is a necessary condition for achieving quantum advantage. Specifically, the authors explored the importance of measurement incompatibility at the receiving end for demonstrating quantum advantage in any communication scenario and proposed a semi - device - independent witness method for measurement incompatibility. In addition, they also fully characterized three sets of incompatible projective qubit measurement sets that can be detected using the proposed witness method. ### Main Contributions 1. **Necessity of Measurement Incompatibility**: - It is proved that in any communication task, measurement incompatibility at the receiving end is a necessary condition for achieving quantum advantage. - This conclusion is further confirmed by analyzing the relationships between different types of probability distribution sets. 2. **Semi - Device - Independent Witness of Measurement Incompatibility**: - A semi - device - independent witness method for measurement incompatibility based on Generalized Random Access Codes (RACs) is proposed. - Upper bounds applicable to any measurement set are derived, and exact values are given in certain specific cases. 3. **Characterization of Three Sets of Incompatible Projective Qubit Measurement Sets**: - All three sets of incompatible projective qubit measurement sets that can be detected using the proposed witness method are fully characterized. ### Methods and Results - **Definition of Communication Scenarios**: - Consider two participants, Alice (the sender) and Bob (the receiver). Alice sends classical or quantum information to Bob according to the input, and Bob generates an output based on the received information and his own input. - By analyzing different types of probability distribution sets, such as classical communication, quantum communication (with or without shared randomness), quantum communication limited to compatible measurements, etc., the impact of measurement incompatibility on quantum advantage is studied. - **Main Results**: - **Result 1**: In any communication task, if the measurements are compatible, the performance of quantum strategies will not exceed that of classical strategies. Therefore, measurement incompatibility is a necessary condition for achieving quantum advantage. - **Result 2**: Upper bounds on the average success probability of Generalized Random Access Codes are derived, and these upper bounds can be used to witness measurement incompatibility. - **Result 3**: All three sets of incompatible projective qubit measurement sets that can be detected using the proposed witness method are fully characterized. ### Conclusions - Through rigorous mathematical analysis and specific examples of communication tasks, this paper proves the importance of measurement incompatibility in achieving quantum advantage. - The proposed semi - device - independent witness method for measurement incompatibility provides a theoretical basis for future experimental verification. - The research results open up new directions for further exploration of the application of measurement incompatibility in quantum communication. ### Future Research Directions - **More Efficient Incompatibility Witness**: Develop more efficient witness methods for measurement incompatibility based on different communication tasks. - **Extension to Other Quantum Resources**: Generalize the results to semi - device - independent witnesses of incompatible quantum channels and quantum instruments. - **Operational Witness**: Propose operational witness methods applicable to all incompatible extremal POVMs.
