Abstract:In this short note, we show that the problem of VEST is $W[2]$-hard for parameter $k$. This strengthens a result of Matoušek, who showed $W[1]$-hardness of that problem. The consequence of this result is that computing the $k$-th homotopy group of a $d$-dimensional space for $d > 3$ is $W[2]$-hard for parameter $k$.

Abstract:Consider the following parameterized counting variation of the classic subset sum problem, which arises notably in the context of higher homotopy groups of topological spaces: Let $\mathbf{v} \in \mathbb{Q}^d$ be a rational vector, $(T_{1}, T_{2} \ldots T_{m})$ a list of $d \times d$ rational matrices, $S \in \mathbb{Q}^{h \times d}$ a rational matrix not necessarily square and $k$ a parameter. The goal is to compute the number of ways one can choose $k$ matrices $T_{i_1}, T_{i_2}, \ldots, T_{i_k}$ from the list such that $ST_{i_k} \cdots T_{i_1}\mathbf{v} = \mathbf{0} \in \mathbb{Q}^h$. In this paper, we show that this problem is $\# W[2]$-hard for parameter $k$. As a consequence, computing the $k$-th homotopy group of a $d$-dimensional 1-connected topological space for $d > 3$ is $\# W[2]$-hard for parameter $k$. We also discuss a decision version of the problem and its several modifications for which we show $W[1]/W[2]$-hardness. This is in contrast to the parameterized $k$-sum problem, which is only $W[1]$-hard (Abboud-Lewi-Williams, ESA'14). In addition, we show that the decision version of the problem without parameter is an undecidable problem, and we give a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm for matrices of bounded size over finite fields, parameterized the matrix dimensions and the order of the field.

Abstract:Given a k -connected graph G =( V , E ) and V ′ ⊂ V , k -Vertex-Connected Subgraph Augmentation Problem ( k -VCSAP) is to find S ⊂ V ∖ V ′ with minimum cardinality such that the subgraph induced by V ′ ∪ S is k -connected. In this paper, we study the hardness of k -VCSAP in undirect graphs. We first prove k -VCSAP is APX-hard. Then, we improve the lower bound in two ways by relying on different assumptions. That is, we prove no algorithm for k -VCSAP has a PR better than O (log (log n )) unless P = NP and O (log n ) unless NP ⊆ DTIME ( n O (log log n ) ), where n is the size of an input graph.

Abstract:Let k ≥ 1 . A graph G is W k if for any k pairwise disjoint independent vertex subsets A 1 , … , A k in G, there exist k pairwise disjoint maximum independent sets S 1 , … , S k in G such that A i ⊆ S i for i ∈ [ k ] . Recognizing W 1 graphs is coNP-hard, as shown by Chvátal and Slater (1993) and, independently, by Sankaranarayana and Stewart (1992). Extending this result and answering a recent question of Levit and Tankus, we show that recognizing W k graphs is coNP-hard for k ≥ 2 . On the positive side, we show that recognizing W k graphs is, for each k ≥ 2 , FPT parameterized by clique-width and by tree-width. Finally, we construct graphs G that are not W 2 such that, for every vertex v in G and every maximal independent set S in G − N [ v ] , the largest independent set in N ( v ) ∖ S consists of a single vertex, thereby refuting a conjecture of Levit and Tankus.

On the Hardness of Approximating the $k$-Way Hypergraph Cut problem

Abstract:We consider the approximability of the k-WAY HYPERGRAPH CUT problem: the input is an edge-weighted hypergraph G = (V, epsilon) and an integer k and the goal is to remove a min-weight subset of the edges such that the residual hypergraph has at least k connected components. When G is a graph this problem admits a 2(1 - 1/0-approximation (Saran and Vazirani, SIAM J. Comput. 1995). However, there has been no non-trivial approximation ratio for general hypergraphs. In this note we show, via a very simple reduction, that an alpha-approximation for k-WAY HYPERGRAPH CUT implies an alpha(2)-approximation for the DENSEST l-SUBGRAPH problem. Our reduction combined with the hardness result of (Manurangsi, STOC'17) implies that under the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH), there is no n(1/(loglogn)c)-approximation for k-WAY HYPERGRAPH CUT where c > 0 is a universal constant and n is the number of nodes. k-WAY HYPERGRAPH CUT is a special case of nodes. k-WAY HYPERGRAPH CUT is a special case k-WAY SUBMODULAR PARTITION and hence our hardness applies to this latter problem as well. These hardness results are in contrast to a 2-approximation for closely related problems where the goal is to separate k given terminals (Chekuri and Ene, FOCS'11), (Ene et al., SODA'13).
Asymptotically Optimal Hardness for $k$-Set Packing and $k$-Matroid Intersection

Abstract:For any $\varepsilon > 0$, we prove that $k$-Dimensional Matching is hard to approximate within a factor of $k/(12 + \varepsilon)$ for large $k$ unless $\textsf{NP} \subseteq \textsf{BPP}$. Listed in Karp's 21 $\textsf{NP}$-complete problems, $k$-Dimensional Matching is a benchmark computational complexity problem which we find as a special case of many constrained optimization problems over independence systems including: $k$-Set Packing, $k$-Matroid Intersection, and Matroid $k$-Parity. For all the aforementioned problems, the best known lower bound was a $\Omega(k /\log(k))$-hardness by Hazan, Safra, and Schwartz. In contrast, state-of-the-art algorithms achieved an approximation of $O(k)$. Our result narrows down this gap to a constant and thus provides a rationale for the observed algorithmic difficulties. The crux of our result hinges on a novel approximation preserving gadget from $R$-degree bounded $k$-CSPs over alphabet size $R$ to $kR$-Dimensional Matching. Along the way, we prove that $R$-degree bounded $k$-CSPs over alphabet size $R$ are hard to approximate within a factor $\Omega_k(R)$ using known randomised sparsification methods for CSPs.

Abstract:The dichotomy conjecture for the parameterized embedding problem states that the problem of deciding whether a given graph G from some class K of "pattern graphs" can be embedded into a given graph H (that is, is isomorphic to a subgraph of H) is fixed-parameter tractable if K is a class of graphs of bounded tree width and W[1]complete otherwise.Towards this conjecture, we prove that the embedding problem is W[1]-complete if K is the class of all grids or the class of all walls.

Abstract:We give a direct proof of a result of Sundaram and Stanley: that the dimension of the space of invariant vectors in a $2k$-fold tensor product of the vector representation of $\mathfrak{sp}_{2n}$ equals the number of $(n+1)$-avoiding matchings of $2k$ points. This can be viewed as an extension of Schensted's theorem on longest decreasing subsequences. Our main tool is an extension of Viennot's geometric construction to the setting of up-down tableaux.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that it is W[2]-hard to approximate k-SetCover within any constant ratio. Our proof is built upon the recently developed threshold graph composition technique. We propose a strong notion of threshold graphs and use a new composition method to prove this result. Our technique could also be applied to rule out polynomial time $o\left(\frac{\log n}{\log \log n}\right)$ ratio approximation algorithms for the non-parameterized k-SetCover problem with $k$ as small as $O\left(\frac{\log n}{\log \log n}\right)^3$, assuming W[1]$\neq$FPT. We highlight that our proof does not depend on the well-known PCP theorem, and only involves simple combinatorial objects.

$C_{2k+1}$-coloring of bounded-diameter graphs

Abstract:For a fixed graph $H$, in the graph homomorphism problem, denoted by $Hom(H)$, we are given a graph $G$ and we have to determine whether there exists an edge-preserving mapping $\varphi: V(G) \to V(H)$. Note that $Hom(C_3)$, where $C_3$ is the cycle of length $3$, is equivalent to $3$-Coloring. The question whether $3$-Coloring is polynomial-time solvable on diameter-$2$ graphs is a well-known open problem. In this paper we study the $Hom(C_{2k+1})$ problem on bounded-diameter graphs for $k\geq 2$, so we consider all other odd cycles than $C_3$. We prove that for $k\geq 2$, the $Hom(C_{2k+1})$ problem is polynomial-time solvable on diameter-$(k+1)$ graphs -- note that such a result for $k=1$ would be precisely a polynomial-time algorithm for $3$-Coloring of diameter-$2$ graphs. Furthermore, we give subexponential-time algorithms for diameter-$(k+2)$ graphs. We complement these results with a lower bound for diameter-$(2k+2)$ graphs -- in this class of graphs the $Hom(C_{2k+1})$ problem is NP-hard and cannot be solved in subexponential-time, unless the ETH fails. Finally, we consider another direction of generalizing $3$-Coloring on diameter-$2$ graphs. We consider other target graphs $H$ than odd cycles but we restrict ourselves to diameter $2$. We show that if $H$ is triangle-free, then $Hom(H)$ is polynomial-time solvable on diameter-$2$ graphs.

A necessary and sufficient condition for $k$-transversals

Abstract:We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for a family of convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ to admit a $k$-transversal, for any $0 \le k \le d-1$. This result is a common generalization of Helly's theorem ($k=0$) and the Goodman-Pollack-Wenger theorem ($k=d-1$). Additionally, we obtain an analogue in the complex setting by characterizing the existence of a complex $k$-transversal to a family of convex sets in $\mathbb{C}^d$, extending the work of McGinnis ($k=d-1$). Our approach employs a Borsuk-Ulam-type theorem on Stiefel manifolds.

Abstract:In this note, we consider a Turán-type problem in hypergraphs. What is the maximum number of edges if we forbid a subgraph? Let Hn(3) be a 3-uniform linear hypergraph, i.e. any two edges have at most one vertex common. A special hypergraph, called wicket , is formed by three rows and two columns of a 3×3 point matrix. We describe two linear hypergraphs that if we forbid either of them in Hn(3) , then the hypergraph is sparse, i.e. the number of its edges is o(n2) . Since both contain a wicket, it implies a conjecture of Gyárfás and Sárközy that wicket-free hypergraphs are sparse.

Abstract:For D an infinite set, k>1 and W the set of k-sets from D, there is a natural closed permutation group G_k which is a non-split extension of \mathbb{Z}_2^W by \Sym(D). We classify the closed subgroups of G_k which project onto \Sym(D)$. The question arises in model theory as a problem about finite covers, but here we formulate and solve it in algebraic terms.

Stably free modules and the unstable classification of 2-complexes

Abstract:For all $k \ge 2$, we show that there exists a group $G$ and a non-free stably free $\mathbb{Z} G$-module of rank $k$. We use this to show that, for all $k \ge 2$, there exist homotopically distinct finite $2$-complexes with fundamental group $G$ and with Euler characteristic exceeding the minimal value over $G$ by $k$. This resolves Problem D5 in the 1979 Problem List of C. T. C. Wall. We also explore a number of generalisations and present a potential application to the topology of closed smooth 4-manifolds.

Two hardness results for the maximum 2-edge-colorable subgraph problem in bipartite graphs

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the maximum $k$-edge-colorable subgraph problem. In this problem we are given a graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, the goal to take $k$ matchings of $G$ such that their union contains maximum number of edges. This problem is NP-hard in cubic graphs, and polynomial time solvable in bipartite graphs as we observe in our paper. We present two NP-hardness results for two versions of this problem where we have weights on edges or color constraints on vertices. In fact, we show that these versions are NP-hard already in bipartite graphs of maximum degree three. In order to achieve these results, we establish a connection between our problems and the problem of construction of special maximum matchings considered in the Master thesis of the author and defended back in 2003.

A Sylvester-Gallai-type theorem for complex-representable matroids

Abstract:The Sylvester-Gallai Theorem states that every rank-$3$ real-representable matroid has a two-point line. We prove that, for each $k\ge 2$, every complex-representable matroid with rank at least $4^{k-1}$ has a rank-$k$ flat with exactly $k$ points. For $k=2$, this is a well-known result due to Kelly, which we use in our proof. A similar result was proved earlier by Barak, Dvir, Wigderson, and Yehudayoff and later refined by Dvir, Saraf, and Wigderson, but we get slightly better bounds with a more elementary proof.

Abstract:This paper shows that the $\mathrm{VC}_2$-dimension of a subset of $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ known as the 'quadratic Green-Sanders example' is at least 3 and at most 501. The upper bound confirms a conjecture of Terry and Wolf, who introduced this set in their recent work concerning strengthenings of the higher-order arithmetic regularity lemma under certain model-theoretic tameness assumptions. Additionally, the paper presents a simplified proof that the (linear) Green-Sanders example, which has its roots in Ramsey theory, has $\mathrm{VC}$-dimension at most 3.

Abstract:A set $S\subseteq V$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a \emph{$c$-clustered set} if it induces a subgraph with components of order at most $c$ each, and $\alpha_c(G)$ denotes the size of a largest $c$-clustered set. For any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and treewidth $k$, we show that $\alpha_c(G) \geq \frac{c}{c+k+1}n$, which improves a result of Wood [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2208.10074" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2208.10074">arXiv:2208.10074</a>, August 2022], while we construct $n$-vertex graphs $G$ of treewidth~$k$ with $\alpha_c(G)\leq \frac{c}{c+k}n$. In the case $c\leq 2$ or $k=1$ we prove the better lower bound $\alpha_c(G) \geq \frac{c}{c+k}n$, which settles a conjecture of Chappell and Pelsmajer [Electron.\ J.\ Comb., 2013] and is best-possible. Finally, in the case $c=3$ and $k=2$, we show $\alpha_c(G) \geq \frac{5}{9}n$ and which is best-possible.
