Abstract:For all $k \ge 2$, we show that there exists a group $G$ and a non-free stably free $\mathbb{Z} G$-module of rank $k$. We use this to show that, for all $k \ge 2$, there exist homotopically distinct finite $2$-complexes with fundamental group $G$ and with Euler characteristic exceeding the minimal value over $G$ by $k$. This resolves Problem D5 in the 1979 Problem List of C. T. C. Wall. We also explore a number of generalisations and present a potential application to the topology of closed smooth 4-manifolds.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the unstable classification problems of stably free modules and finite 2 - complexes. Specifically, the author shows that for all \(k \geq 2\), there exists a group \(G\) and a non - free stably free \(\mathbb{Z}G\)-module with rank \(k\). Using this, the author further proves that for all \(k \geq 2\), there exist homotopically different finite 2 - complexes whose fundamental group is \(G\) and whose Euler characteristic exceeds the minimum value \(k\) of \(G\).
This result solves problem D5 in C. T. C. Wall's 1979 problem list. In addition, the author also explores some generalizations and proposes a potential application, that is, an application in the topology of closed smooth 4 - manifolds.
### Specific Problem Analysis
1. **Existence of Stably Free Modules**:
- The author proves that for all \(k \geq 2\), there exists a group \(G\) and a non - free stably free \(\mathbb{Z}G\)-module \(P\) such that \(P\oplus\mathbb{Z}G\cong Q\oplus\mathbb{Z}G\) and \(Q\cong Q_0\oplus\mathbb{Z}G^k\) for some \(\mathbb{Z}G\)-module \(Q_0\), but \(P\not\cong Q\).
2. **Homotopy Classification of Finite 2 - Complexes**:
- The author proves that for all \(k \geq 2\), there exist finite 2 - complexes \(X\) and \(Y\) such that \(X\vee S^2\simeq Y\vee S^2\) and \(Y\simeq Y_0\vee kS^2\) for some finite 2 - complex \(Y_0\), but \(X\not\simeq Y\).
3. **Topological Application in Closed Smooth 4 - Manifolds**:
- The author discusses the potential application of stably free \(\mathbb{Z}G\)-modules in the unstable classification of closed smooth 4 - manifolds. In particular, if there exists a geometrically realized stably free \(\mathbb{Z}G\)-module \(S\) such that \(S\oplus S^*\) is not a free \(\mathbb{Z}G\)-module, then \(\text{MDiff}(G)\) and \(M(G)\) do not satisfy the cancellation property at a certain level.
### Main Results
- **Theorem A**: For all \(k \geq 2\), there exists a group \(G\) and non - free stably free \(\mathbb{Z}G\)-modules \(P\) and \(Q\) such that \(P\oplus\mathbb{Z}G\cong Q\oplus\mathbb{Z}G\) and \(Q\cong Q_0\oplus\mathbb{Z}G^k\) for some \(\mathbb{Z}G\)-module \(Q_0\), but \(P\not\cong Q\).
- **Theorem B**: For all \(k \geq 2\), there exist finite 2 - complexes \(X\) and \(Y\) such that \(X\vee S^2\simeq Y\vee S^2\) and \(Y\simeq Y_0\vee kS^2\) for some finite 2 - complex \(Y_0\), but \(X\not\simeq Y\).
- **Theorem C**: There exists a group \(G\) such that for all \(k \geq 1\), there exists a non - free stably free \(\mathbb{Z}G\)-module with rank \(k\).
