Abstract:We investigate the cosmological applications of new gravitational scalar-tensor theories and we analyze them in the light of $H_0$ tension. In these theories the Lagrangian contains the Ricci scalar and its first and second derivatives in a specific combination that makes them free of ghosts, thus corresponding to healthy bi-scalar extensions of general relativity. We examine two specific models, and for particular choices of the model parameters we find that the effect of the additional terms is negligible at high redshifts, obtaining a coincidence with $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, however as time passes the deviation increases and thus at low redshifts the Hubble parameter acquires increased values ($H_0\approx 74 km/s/Mpc$) in a controlled way. The mechanism behind this behavior is the fact that the effective dark-energy equation-of-state parameter exhibits phantom behavior, which implies faster expansion, which is one of the theoretical requirements that are capable of alleviating the $H_0$ tension. Lastly, we confront the models with Cosmic Chronometer (CC) data showing full agreement within 1$\sigma$ confidence level.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the **tension of the Hubble constant \(H_0\)** (\(H_0\) tension). Specifically, there are significant differences in the current measurements of the Hubble constant \(H_0\), leading to inconsistencies between theory and observation. According to the data from the Planck satellite, assuming the standard \(\Lambda\)CDM model, the value of the Hubble constant \(H_0\) is approximately \(67.27 \pm 0.60\) km/s/Mpc; while the results of direct measurements, such as those of the SH0ES collaboration in 2019, give the Hubble constant \(H_0\) to be approximately \(74.03 \pm 1.42\) km/s/Mpc. This difference reaches a significant level of about 4.4\(\sigma\), indicating that there may be systematic errors or that new physical mechanisms are required to explain this difference. To alleviate this tension, the paper proposes a new class of gravitational scalar - tensor theories. These theories, by introducing an additional scalar field and a specific form of Lagrangian density, make the behavior of the universe at high redshifts consistent with the \(\Lambda\)CDM model, but at low redshifts, the Hubble parameter \(H_0\) can obtain a higher value. Specifically, the paper analyzes two specific models and shows that these models can make the Hubble parameter \(H_0\) reach approximately 74 km/s/Mpc at low redshifts, thereby alleviating the \(H_0\) tension. In addition, the paper also verifies the validity of these models through Cosmic Chronometer (CC) data, and the results show that these models are completely consistent with the observational data within the 1\(\sigma\) confidence level. In summary, the main purpose of this paper is to provide a possible mechanism to alleviate the tension problem of the Hubble constant \(H_0\) by introducing new gravitational scalar - tensor theories.
