Abstract:We show the equivalence of several constructions of the category of condensed sets by using free resolutions of compact Hausdorff spaces. We also give an elementary construction of the condensed set associated to any presheaf on compact Hausdorff spaces.

Abstract:Condensed mathematics, developed by Clausen and Scholze over the last few years, proposes a generalization of topology with better categorical properties. It replaces the concept of a topological space by that of a condensed set, which can be defined as a sheaf on a certain site of compact Hausdorff spaces. Since condensed sets are supposed to be a generalization of topological spaces, one would like to be able to study the notion of discreteness. There are various ways to define what it means for a condensed set to be discrete. In this paper we describe them, and prove that they are equivalent. The results have been fully formalized in the Lean proof assistant.

Abstract:Condensed mathematics, developed by Clausen and Scholze over the last few years, proposes a generalization of topology with better categorical properties. It replaces the concept of a topological space by that of a condensed set, which can be defined as a sheaf for the coherent topology on a certain category of compact Hausdorff spaces. In this case, the sheaf condition has a fairly simple explicit description, which arises from studying the relationship between the coherent, regular and extensive topologies. In this paper, we establish this relationship under minimal assumptions on the category, going beyond the case of compact Hausdorff spaces. Along the way, we also provide a characterizations of sheaves and covering sieves for these categories. All results in this paper have been fully formalized in the Lean proof assistant.

Free and co-free constructions for Hopf categories

Abstract:We show that under mild conditions on the monoidal base category $\mathcal V$, the category ${\sf VHopf}$ of Hopf $\mathcal V$-categories is locally presentable and deduce the existence of free and cofree Hopf categories. We also provide an explicit description of the free and cofree Hopf categories over a semi-Hopf category. One of the conditions on the base category $\mathcal V$, states that endofunctors obtained by tensoring with a fixed object preserve jointly monic families, which leads us to the notion of ``very flat monoidal product'', which we investigate in particular for module categories.

Resolutions as directed colimits

Abstract:A general principle suggests that "anything flat is a directed colimit of countably presentable flats". In this paper, we consider resolutions and coresolutions of modules over a countably coherent ring $R$ (e.g., any coherent ring or any countably Noetherian ring). We show that any $R$-module of flat dimension $n$ is a directed colimit of countably presentable $R$-modules of flat dimension at most $n$, and any flatly coresolved $R$-module is a directed colimit of countably presentable flatly coresolved $R$-modules. If $R$ is a countably coherent ring with a dualizing complex, then any F-totally acyclic complex of flat $R$-modules is a directed colimit of F-totally acyclic complexes of countably presentable flat $R$-modules. The proofs are applications of an even more general category-theoretic principle going back to an unpublished 1977 preprint of Ulmer. Our proof of the assertion that every Gorenstein-flat module over a countably coherent ring is a directed colimit of countably presentable Gorenstein-flat modules uses a different technique, based on results of Saroch and Stovicek. We also discuss totally acyclic complexes of injectives and Gorenstein-injective modules, obtaining various cardinality estimates for the accessibility rank under various assumptions.

Categorical Resolutions of a Class of Derived Categories

Abstract:We clarify the relation between the subcategory D hf b (A) of homological finite objects in D b (A) and the subcategory K b (P) of perfect complexes in D b (A), by giving two classes of abelian categories A with enough projective objects such that D hf b (A) = K b (P), and finding an example such that D hf b (A) ≠ K b (P). We realize the bounded derived category D b (A) as a Verdier quotient of the relative derived category D C b (A), where C is an arbitrary resolving contravariantly finite subcategory of A: Using this relative derived categories, we get categorical resolutions of a class of bounded derived categories of module categories of infinite global dimension. We prove that if an Artin algebra A of infinite global dimension has a module T with inj.dimT < ∞ such that ⊥T is finite, then D b (modA) admits a categorical resolution; and that for a CM (Cohen-Macaulay)-finite Gorenstein algebra, such a categorical resolution is weakly crepant.

Abstract:Injective resolutions of modules are key objects of homological algebra, which are used for the computation of derived functors. Semiinjective resolutions of chain complexes are more general objects, which are used for the computation of $\operatorname{Hom}$ spaces in the derived category $\mathscr{D}( A )$ of a ring $A$. Minimal semiinjective resolutions have the additional property of being unique.

Abstract:In recent work, the authors developed a simple method of constructing topological spaces from certain well-behaved partially ordered sets -- those coming from sequences of relations between finite sets. This method associates a given poset with its spectrum, which is a compact T_1 topological space. In this paper, we focus on the case where such finite sets have a graph structure and the relations belong to a given graph category. We relate topological properties of the spectrum to combinatorial properties of the graph categories involved. We then utilise this to exhibit elementary combinatorial constructions of well-known continua as Fraïssé limits of finite graphs in categories with relational morphisms.

Abstract:One of the better-known independence results in general mathematics is Shelah's solution to Whitehead's problem of whether $\mathrm{Ext}^1(A,\mathbb{Z})=0$ implies that an abelian group $A$ is free. The point of departure for the present work is Clausen and Scholze's proof that, in contrast, one natural interpretation of Whitehead's problem within their recently-developed framework of condensed mathematics has an affirmative answer in $\mathsf{ZFC}$. We record two alternative proofs of this result, as well as several original variations on it, both for their intrinsic interest and as a springboard for a broader study of the relations between condensed mathematics and set theoretic forcing. We show more particularly how the condensation $\underline{X}$ of any locally compact Hausdorff space $X$ may be viewed as an organized presentation of the forcing names for the points of canonical interpretations of $X$ in all possible set-forcing extensions of the universe, and we argue our main result by way of this fact. We show also that when interpreted within the category of light condensed abelian groups, Whitehead's problem is again independent of the $\mathsf{ZFC}$ axioms. In fact we show that it is consistent that Whitehead's problem has a negative solution within the category of $\kappa$-condensed abelian groups for every uncountable cardinal $\kappa$, but that this scenario, in turn, is inconsistent with the existence of a strongly compact cardinal.

Abstract:Diagrammatic sets are presheaves on a rich category of shapes, whose definition is motivated by combinatorial topology and higher-dimensional diagram rewriting. These shapes include representatives of oriented simplices, cubes, and positive opetopes, and are stable under operations including Gray products, joins, suspensions, and duals. We exhibit a cofibrantly generated model structure on diagrammatic sets, as well as two separate Quillen equivalences with the classical model structure on simplicial sets. We construct explicit sets of generating cofibrations and acyclic cofibrations, and prove that the model structure is monoidal with the Gray product of diagrammatic sets.

Abstract:We introduce a single-set axiomatisation of cubical $\omega$-categories, including connections and inverses. We justify these axioms by establishing a series of equivalences between the category of single-set cubical $\omega$-categories, and their variants with connections and inverses, and the corresponding cubical $\omega$-categories. We also report on the formalisation of cubical $\omega$-categories with the Isabelle/HOL proof assistant, which has been instrumental in developing the single-set axiomatisation.

Abstract:To each simplicial set $X$ we naturally assign an étendue ${É X}$ whose internal logic captures information about the geometry of $X$. In particular, we show that, for 'non-singular' objects $X$ and $Y$, the étendues ${É X}$ and ${É Y}$ are equivalent if, and only if, $X$ and $Y$ have the same dimension. Many of the results apply to presheaf toposes over 'well-founded' sites.

Abstract:Using a relative version of Auslander's formula, we give a functorial approach to show that the bounded derived category of every Artin algebra admits a categorical resolution. This, in particular, implies that the bounded derived categories of Artin algebras of finite global dimension determine bounded derived categories of all Artin algebras. Hence, this paper can be considered as a typical application of functor categories, introduced in representation theory by Auslander, to categorical resolutions.

Abstract:This paper gives a description of various recent results which construct monomial ideals with a given minimal free resolution. We show that these are all instances of coordinatizing a finite atomic lattice as defined by Mapes. Subsequently, we explain how in some of these cases (in one case work by Faridi, and in another work by Fl\oystad), where questions still remain, this point of view can be applied. We also prove an equivalence in the case of trees between the notion of maximal defined by Fl\oystad and a notion of being maximal in a Betti stratum.

Sheaves of Higher Categories on Generalised Spaces

Abstract:We study the homotopy right Kan extension of homotopy sheaves on a category to its free cocompletion, i.e. to its category of presheaves. Any pretopology on the original category induces a canonical pretopology of generalised coverings on the free cocompletion. We show that with respect to these pretopologies the homotopy right Kan extension along the Yoneda embedding preserves homotopy sheaves valued in (sufficiently nice) simplicial model categories. Moreover, we show that this induces an equivalence between sheaves of spaces on the original category and colimit-preserving sheaves of spaces on its free cocompletion. We present three applications in geometry and topology: first, we prove that diffeological vector bundles descend along subductions of diffeological spaces. Second, we deduce that various flavours of bundle gerbes with connection satisfy $(\infty,2)$-categorical descent. Finally, we investigate smooth diffeomorphism actions in smooth bordism-type field theories on a manifold. We show how these smooth actions allow us to extract the values of a field theory on any object coherently from its values on generating objects of the bordism category.

Abstract:We study properties of the cubical Joyal model structures on cubical sets by means of a combinatorial construction which allows for convenient comparisons between categories of cubical sets with and without symmetries. In particular, we prove that the cubical Joyal model structures on categories of cubical sets with connections are cartesian monoidal. Our techniques also allow us to prove that the geometric product of cubical sets (with or without connections) is symmetric up to natural weak equivalence in the cubical Joyal model structure, and to obtain induced model structures for $(\infty,1)$-categories on cubical sets with symmetries.

Abstract:We give an alternative proof of the theorem by Kuznetsov and Lunts stating that any separated scheme of finite type over a field of characteristic zero admits a categorical resolution of singularities. Their construction makes use of the fact that every variety (over a field of characteristic zero) can be resolved by a finite sequence of blow-ups along smooth centres. We merely require the existence of (projective) resolutions. To accomplish this we put the $\mathcal{A}$-spaces of Kuznetsov and Lunts in a different light, viewing them instead as schemes endowed with finite filtrations. The categorical resolution is then constructed by gluing together differential graded categories obtained from a hypercube of finite length filtered schemes.
