Abstract:Let r = pλ, K = Fr(t), f be an irreducible monic polynomial in Fr[t], K(Λf) the cyclotomic function field with conductor f, hf+ the class number of the maximal “real” subfield of K(Λf), hf− the relative class number of K(Λf). The main results in this note are that (1) for each r = pλ > 2 there exist infinitely many irreducible monic polynomials f ∈ Fr[t] with p|hf−; (2) for each r = pλ there exist infinitely many irreducible monic polynomials f ∈ Fr[t] with p|hf+.

Abstract:In this article, we obtain upper bounds on the number of irreducible factors of some classes of polynomials having integer coefficients, which in particular yield some of the well known irreducibility criteria. For devising our results, we use the information about prime factorization of the values taken by such polynomials at sufficiently large integer arguments along with the information about their root location in the complex plane. Further, these techniques are extended to bivariate polynomials over arbitrary fields using non-Archimedean absolute values, yielding extensions of the irreducibility results of M. Ram Murty and S. Weintraub to bivariate polynomials.

Abstract:In this paper we establish function field versions of two classical conjectures on prime numbers. The first says that the number of primes in intervals (x,x+xϵ] is about xϵ/logx. The second says that the number of primes p<x in the arithmetic progression p≡a(modd), for d<x1−δ, is about π(x)ϕ(d), where ϕ is the Euler totient function. More precisely, for short intervals we prove: Let k be a fixed integer. Then πq(I(f,ϵ))∼#I(f,ϵ)k,q→∞ holds uniformly for all prime powers q, degree k monic polynomials f∈Fq[t] and ϵ0(f,q)≤ϵ, where ϵ0 is either 1k, or 2k if p∣k(k−1), or 3k if further p=2 and degf'≤1. Here I(f,ϵ)={g∈Fq[t]∣deg(f−g)≤ϵdegf}, and πq(I(f,ϵ)) denotes the number of prime polynomials in I(f,ϵ). We show that this estimation fails in the neglected cases. For arithmetic progressions we prove: let k be a fixed integer. Then πq(k;D,f)∼πq(k)ϕ(D),q→∞, holds uniformly for all relatively prime polynomials D,f∈Fq[t] satisfying ‖D‖≤qk(1−δ0), where δ0 is either 3k or 4k if p=2 and (f/D)' is a constant. Here πq(k) is the number of degree k prime polynomials and πq(k;D,f) is the number of such polynomials in the arithmetic progression P≡f(modd). We also generalize these results to arbitrary factorization types.

Abstract:We consider almost-primes of the form $f(p)$ where $f$ is an irreducible polynomial over $\mathbb Z$ and $p$ runs over primes. We improve a result of Richert for polynomials of degree at least $3$. In particular we show that, when the degree is large, there are infinitely many primes $p$ for which $f(p)$ has at most $°f+O(\log°f)$ prime factors.

Abstract:Abstract We study how often exceptional configurations of irreducible polynomials over finite fields occur in the context of prime number races and Chebyshev's bias. In particular, we show that three types of biases, which we call “complete bias,” “lower order bias,” and “reversed bias,” occur with probability going to zero among the family of all squarefree monic polynomials of a given degree in as , a power of a fixed prime, goes to infinity. The bounds given extend a previous result of Kowalski, who studied a similar question along particular one‐parameter families of reducible polynomials. The tools used are the large sieve for Frobenius developed by Kowalski, an improvement of it due to Perret–Gentil and considerations from the theory of linear recurrence sequences and arithmetic geometry.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to try to establish a generic model for the problem that several multivariable number-theoretic functions represent simultaneously primes for infinitely many integral points. More concretely, we introduced briefly the research background-the history and current situation-from Euclid's second theorem to Green-Tao theorem. We analyzed some equivalent necessary conditions that irreducible univariable polynomials with integral coefficients represent infinitely many primes, found new necessary conditions which perhaps imply that there are only finitely many Fermat primes, obtained an analogy of the Chinese Remainder Theorem, generalized Euler's function, the prime-counting function and Schinzel-Sierpinski's Conjecture and so on. Nevertheless, this is only a beginning and it miles to go. We hope that number theorists consider further it.

On the set of stable primes for postcritically infinite maps over number fields

Abstract:Many interesting questions in arithmetic dynamics revolve, in one way or another, around the (local and/or global) reducibility behavior of iterates of a polynomial. We show that for very general families of integer polynomials $f$ (and, more generally, rational functions over number fields), the set of stable primes, i.e., primes modulo which all iterates of $f$ are irreducible, is a density zero set. Compared to previous results, our families cover a much wider ground, and in particular apply to $100\%$ of polynomials of any given odd degree, thus adding evidence to the conjecture that polynomials with a "large" set of stable primes are necessarily of a very specific shape, and in particular are necessarily postcritically finite.

Abstract:When investigating the distribution of the Euler totient function, one encounters sets of primes P where if p is in P then r is in P for all r|(p-1). While it is easy to construct finite sets of such primes, the only infinite set known is the set of all primes. We translate this problem into the function field setting and construct an infinite such set in F_p[x] whenever p is equivalent to 2 or 5 modulo 9.

Abstract:Let $q$ be a positive integral power of some prime $p$ and $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$ be a finite field with $q^m$ elements for some $m \in \mathbb{N}$. Here we establish a sufficient condition for the existence of a non-zero element $\epsilon \in \mathbb{F}_{q^m}$, such that $(f(\epsilon), g(\epsilon))$ is a primitive pair in $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$ with two prescribed traces, $\Tr_{{\mathbb{F}_{q^m}}/{\mathbb{F}_q}}(\epsilon)=a$ and $\Tr_{{\mathbb{F}_{q^m}}/{\mathbb{F}_q}}(\epsilon^{-1})=b$, where $f(x), g(x) \in \mathbb{F}_{q^m}(x)$ are rational functions with some restrictions and $a, b \in \mathbb{F}_q$. Also, we show that there exists an element $\epsilon \in \mathbb{F}_{q^m}$ satisfying our desired properties in all but finitely many fields $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. We also calculate possible exceptional pairs explicitly for $m\geq 9$, when degree sums of both the rational functions are taken to be 3.

Abstract:We investigate finite sets of rational functions $\{ f_{1},f_{2}, \dots, f_{r} \}$ defined over some number field $K$ satisfying that any $t_{0} \in K$ is a $K_{p}$-value of one of the functions $f_{i}$ for almost all primes $p$ of $K$. We give strong necessary conditions on the shape of functions appearing in a minimal set with this property, as well as numerous concrete examples showing that these necessary conditions are in a way also close to sufficient. We connect the problem to well-studied concepts such as intersective polynomials and arithmetically exceptional functions.

Abstract:In this paper we establish a function field analogue of a conjecture in number theory which is a combination of several famous conjectures, including the Hardy-Littlewood prime tuple conjecture, conjectures on the number of primes in arithmetic progressions and in short intervals, and the Goldbach conjecture. We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of simultaneous prime values of $n$ linear functions, in the limit of a large finite field.

Abstract:We study how the field of definition of a rational function changes under iteration. We provide a complete classification of polynomials with the property that the field of definition of one of their iterates drops in degree (over a given base field). We show with families of examples that this characterization does not hold for rational functions. Finally, we also classify fractional linear transformations with this property.

On the Non p-Rationality and Iwasawa Invariants of Certain Real Quadratic Fields

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime, and $m,r \in \mathbb{Z}^+$ with $m$ coprime to $p$. In this paper we investigate the real quadratic fields $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{m^2p^{2r} + 1})$. We first show that for $m < C$, where constant $C$ depends on $p$, the fundamental unit $\varepsilon$ of $K$ satisfies the congruence $\varepsilon^{p-1} \equiv 1 \mod{p^2}$, which implies that $K$ is a non $p$-rational field. Varying $r$ then gives an infinite family of non $p$-rational fields. When $m = 1$ and $p$ is a non-Wieferich prime, we use a criterion of Fukuda and Komatsu to show that if $p$ does not divide the class number of $K$, then the Iwasawa invariants for cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$ vanish. We conjecture that there are infinitely many $r$ such that $p$ does not divide the class number of $K$.

Abstract:Let $q, n, m \in \mathbb{N}$ be such that $q$ is a prime power and $a, b \in \mathbb{F}$. In this article we establish a sufficient condition for the existence of a primitive normal pair $(\alpha, f(\alpha)) \in \mathbb{F}_{q^m}$ over $\mathbb{F}$ with a prescribed primitive norm $a$ and a non-zero trace $b$ over $\mathbb{F}$ of $\alpha$, where $f(x) \in \mathbb{F}_{q^m}(x)$ is a rational function of degree sum $n$ with some minor restrictions. Furthermore, for $q=7^k$, $m \geq 7$ and rational functions with numerator and denominator being linear, we explicitly find at most 6 fields in which the desired pair may not exist.

Abstract:Let $K=\Q(\theta)$ be an algebraic number field with $\theta$ a root of an irreducible quadrinomial $f(x) = x^6+ax^m+bx+c\in\Z[x] $ with $m\in\{2,3,4,5\}$. In the present paper, we give some explicit conditions involving only $a,~b,~c$ and $m$ for which $K$ is non-monogenic. In each case, we provide the highest power of a rational prime $p$ dividing index of the field $K$. In particular, we provide a partial answer to the Problem $22$ of Narkiewicz \cite{Nar} for these number fields. Finally, we illustrate our results through examples.

Some new infinite families of non-$p$-rational real quadratic fields

Abstract:Fix a finite collection of primes $\{ p_j \}$, not containing $2$ or $3$. Using some observations which arose from attempts to solve the SIC-POVMs problem in quantum information, we give a simple methodology for constructing an infinite family of simultaneously non-$p_j$-rational real quadratic fields, unramified above any of the $p_j$. Alternatively these may be described as infinite sequences of instances of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$, for varying $D$, where every $p_j$ is a $k$-Wall-Sun-Sun prime, or equivalently a generalised Fibonacci-Wieferich prime. One feature of these techniques is that they may be used to yield fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$ for which a $p$-power cyclic component of the torsion group of the Galois groups of the maximal abelian pro-$p$-extension of $K$ unramified outside primes above $p$, is of size $p^a$ for $a\geq1$ arbitrarily large.

Abstract:Permutation rational functions over finite fields have attracted much attention in recent years. In this paper, we introduce a class of permutation rational functions over $\mathbb F_{q^2}$, whose numerators are so-called $q$-quadratic polynomials. To this end, we will first determine the exact number of zeros of a special $q$-quadratic polynomial in $\mathbb F_{q^2}$, by calculating character sums related to quadratic forms of $\mathbb F_{q^2}/\mathbb F_q$. Then given some rational function, we can demonstrate whether it induces a permutation of $\mathbb F_{q^2}$.
