Abstract:Large earthquakes can be destructive and quickly wreak havoc on a landscape. To mitigate immediate threats, early warning systems have been developed to alert residents, emergency responders, and critical infrastructure operators seconds to a minute before seismic waves arrive. These warnings provide time to take precautions and prevent damage. The success of these systems relies on fast, accurate predictions of ground motion intensities, which is challenging due to the complex physics of earthquakes, wave propagation, and their intricate spatial and temporal interactions. To improve early warning, we propose a novel AI-enabled framework, WaveCastNet, for forecasting ground motions from large earthquakes. WaveCastNet integrates a novel convolutional Long Expressive Memory (ConvLEM) model into a sequence to sequence (seq2seq) forecasting framework to model long-term dependencies and multi-scale patterns in both space and time. WaveCastNet, which shares weights across spatial and temporal dimensions, requires fewer parameters compared to more resource-intensive models like transformers and thus, in turn, reduces inference times. Importantly, WaveCastNet also generalizes better than transformer-based models to different seismic scenarios, including to more rare and critical situations with higher magnitude earthquakes. Our results using simulated data from the San Francisco Bay Area demonstrate the capability to rapidly predict the intensity and timing of destructive ground motions. Importantly, our proposed approach does not require estimating earthquake magnitudes and epicenters, which are prone to errors using conventional approaches; nor does it require empirical ground motion models, which fail to capture strongly heterogeneous wave propagation effects.

Abstract:Modern technology allows real-time seismic monitoring facilities to evolve into earthquake early warning (EEW) systems, capable of reducing deaths, injuries, and economic losses, as well as of speeding up rescue response and damage recovery. The objective of an EEW system is to estimate in a fast and reliable way the earthquake’s damage potential, before the strong shaking hits a given target.The necessary framework for EEW implementation is provided by the observed relationships between different parameters measured on the signal onsets and the final earthquake size. The implication of these observations on the physics of fracture processes has given rise to a significant debate in the seismological community.Currently, EEW systems are implemented or under testing in many countries of the world, and different methodologies and procedures have been studied and developed. The leading experience of countries like Japan or Mexico shows that, with a proper education of population and end-users, and with the design of real-time systems for the reduction of vulnerability/exposure, EEW can be an effective approach to the mitigation of the seismic risk at short time-scales.

Large Scale Parallel Simulation and Visualization of 3d Seismic Wavelield Using the Earth Simulator

Abstract:Recent developments of the Earth Simulator, a high-performance parallel computer, has made it possible to realize realistic 3D simulations of seismic wave propagations on a regional scale including higher frequencies. Paralleling this development, the deployment of dense networks of strong ground motion instruments in Japan (K-NET and KiK-net) has now made it possible to directly visualize regional seismic wave propagation during large earthquakes. Our group has developed an efficient parallel finite difference method (FDM) code for modeline the seismic wavefield and a 3D visualization technique, both suitable for implementation on the Earth Simulator. Large-scale 3D simulations of seismic wave propagation have been conducted using these techniques for recent damaging earthquakes such as the 2000 Tottori-ken Seibu (M-J 7.3) earthquake and the 1993 Kushiro-oki earthquakes (M-J 7.8). Comparison of the simulation results with the dense array observations provides insights into the nature of complex seismic wave propagation through the heterogeneous subsurface structure of Japan. The simulations are in good agreement with the observations in terms of the features of the seismic wavefield, indicating that the simulation is already at a suitable level for use in investigating the expected pattern of ground motions for future earthquake scenarios. C heterogeneities such as sedimentary basins introduce significant amplification of ground motion leading to prolonged ground shaking in these regions. In order to visualize the seismic wave behavior imposed by such heterogeneous structures, and to understand the process of strong motion generation during damaging earthquakes, high-resolution computer simulations including such heterogeneities in the shallow superficial structure are indispensable.

Abstract:Earthquake-triggered giant tsunamis can cause catastrophic disasters to coastal populations, ecosystems and infrastructure on scales over thousands of kilometres. In particular, the scale and tragedy of the 2004 Indian Ocean (about 230,000 fatalities) and 2011 Japan (22,000 fatalities) tsunamis prompted global action to mitigate the impacts of future disasters. In this Review, we summarize progress in understanding tsunami generation, propagation and monitoring, with a particular focus on developments in rapid early warning and long-term hazard assessment. Dense arrays of ocean-bottom pressure gauges in offshore regions provide real-time data of incoming tsunami wave heights, which, combined with advances in numerical and analogue modelling, have enabled the development of rapid tsunami forecasts for near-shore regions (within 3 minutes of an earthquake in Japan). Such early warning is essential to give local communities time to evacuate and save lives. However, long-term assessments and mitigation of tsunami risk from probabilistic tsunami hazard analysis are also needed so that comprehensive disaster prevention planning and structural tsunami countermeasures can be implemented by governments, authorities and local populations. Future work should focus on improving tsunami inundation, damage risk and evacuation modelling, and on reducing the uncertainties of probabilistic tsunami hazard analysis associated with the unpredictable nature of megathrust earthquake occurrence and rupture characteristics.

Abstract:The method of on-site earthquake early warning was proposed in the past decade to enhance seismic preparedness and safety measures for areas close to the earthquake epicenter. The method leverages critical information contained in the initial 3s of a P wave that arrives early to predict possibly intense ground shaking at a site. In this study, two types of empirical relationships are developed: (1)Pd3-PGV relationship for predicting the horizontal peak ground velocity (PGV) based on the peak displacement in the first 3s of the vertical motion (Pd3); and (2)c-Mw relationship for estimating the moment magnitude (Mw) of an earthquake based on a ground-motion period parameter (c). Performance of these empirical relationships in on-site earthquake early warning framework is examined using global earthquake records from the most updated Next Generation Attenuation (NGA-West2) strong-motion database. Region-specific empirical predictive equations for California and Japan are proposed based on the state of the art mixed-effect regression to separate ground-motion variability between different earthquakes and that within an earthquake. Applicability and inapplicability of the empirical models in the near-fault condition are investigated using ground motions with strong velocity pulses. The overarching goal of study is to leverage the comprehensive database and state of the art regression techniques to facilitate understanding and engineering practice of on-site earthquake early warning in a variety of regions and in the near-fault condition.

Abstract:A period parameter τc and an amplitude parameter Pd determined from the very beginning of P wave are important for earthquake early warning (EEW), yet their dependence on source mechanism, focal depth and epicentral distance has not been fully studied. After the devastating Mw7.9 Wenchuan earthquake, hundreds of M4‐6 earthquakes occurred with diverse focal mechanisms and depth range of 2–20 km. We calculate τc and Pd of these aftershocks and examine their dependence on magnitude, τc, distance, and depth. We find that τc correlates well with magnitude, but joint regression including distance and depth does not significantly improve the correlation. The effect of focal mechanism on the τc ‐magnitude correlation is not obvious. When P wave is nodal, τc measurement becomes inaccurate. Also, τc is systematically greater for slow earthquakes, leading to a possible false alarm. Thus, more studies are required to discriminate slow earthquakes for robust early warning.
Resolving Shallow Moment Releases of Megathrust Earthquakes by Empirical Green’s Function‐Based Inversions: A New Approach for Tsunami Warning

Abstract:Tsunamis are secondary hazards generated by megathrust earthquakes, which are commonly related to coseismic slips occurring at shallow depths. Various methods were proposed to quickly predict tsunami excitations, while these methods mostly require specific observations or modeling techniques, which limits their application to global subduction zones. In this study, we propose an inversion technique that utilizes the water‐reverberation phases in teleseismic P coda waves to discriminate shallow and deep slips and adopts teleseismic empirical Green’s functions (EGFs) to enable rapid inversions. We developed an EGF extraction and interpolation method to construct Green’s functions. We apply this algorithm to seven megathrust earthquakes, which have been well studied and identified with or without significant shallow slips. In comparison with inversions performed with theoretical Green’s functions, the EGF‐based inversion technique is more effective in discriminating these two types of earthquakes. We propose a threshold to evaluate the percentage of shallow moment releases and found that the EGF‐based inversion result resembles that of joint inversion results. We also analyze the possibility to apply the EGF‐based inversion technique for tsunami warning purposes and infer that it serves as a promising algorithm to enable efficient tsunami early warning.

Abstract:International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics, Ahead of Print. The earthquake early warning (EEW) system is critical in mitigating the effects of seismic hazards by providing valuable response time. Damage to buildings can be determined based on peak ground acceleration (PGA). If PGA can be predicted in advance, the seismic risk of a building can be estimated. A novel method for predicting PGA using wavelet packet transform (WPT) and convolutional neural networks (CNN) is proposed. Early arrival waves generated by earthquakes are decomposed using WPT to produce a matrix of wavelet coefficients. This matrix serves as the input to the CNN model to predict the PGA. To achieve the best prediction performance, different setups were investigated, including the use of Daubechies Wavelet 4 (db4) and four-level decomposition. The results indicate that this configuration yields better prediction accuracy. P-waves of three-second duration are commonly used for EEW. Compared to the prediction results of a CNN model used to validate the method, the proposed method has a lower average error and better use of early arrival waves with shorter duration. Overall, the proposed method demonstrates the potential of WPT and CNN in EEW systems. The proposed approach can utilize shorter early arrival waves to predict PGA and gain more reaction time to get rid of seismic hazards. To estimate structural damage using the predicted PGA under an impending earthquake, a method is proposed to quickly determine structural damage based on the predicted PGA and fragility curves. It provides a method to estimate the potential structural damage caused by an impending earthquake.

Abstract:The on-site P-wave earthquake early warning (EEW) based on the site-specific ratios of S-waves to P-waves has been applied to large-sized offshore earthquakes, and the efficiency of the method has been validated. However, the method requires the P-waves including earthquake ground motions radiated from a large slip area while avoiding the inclusion of S-waves. In this study, we investigated the applicability of the on-site P-wave EEW method for ground motions near an earthquake source fault region, using strong-motion data observed during the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake sequence in Japan. At first, we examined the appropriate time-window length following the arrival of the P-waves. As a result, P-waves with a time-window length of 2.56 s after the arrival at most strong-motion stations were required at least to predict appropriately S-waves for the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake sequence, including the large-sized earthquakes. On the other hand, in the case of the large-sized earthquake as the mainshock ( Mj 7.3), the method can predict within a brief time of 0.5 to 2 s in the operational use that strong ground motions exceeding a certain threshold (e.g., acceleration of 150 cm/s 2 ) will come. Moreover, we found that the method was not strongly affected by the non-linearity of soil deposits due to strong ground motions during the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake sequence. The variability of the relationship between P- and S-waves at the seismic bedrock influenced by the source and path effects is larger than the variability of the relationships between P-/S-waves at the seismic bedrock and at the ground surface by the site effects, and therefore, it hides the effect of the non-linearity of soil deposits.

Abstract:Earthquakes follow an exponential distribution referred to as the Gutenberg–Richter law, which is characterized by the b value that represents a ratio of the number of large earthquakes to that of small earthquakes. Spatial and temporal variation in the b value is important for assessing the probability of a larger earthquake. Conventionally, the b value is obtained by a maximum-likelihood estimation based on past earthquakes with a certain sample size. To properly assess the occurrence of earthquakes and understand their dynamics, determining this parameter with a statistically optimal method is important. Here, we discuss a method that uses a state space model and a particle filter, as a framework for time-series data, to estimate temporal variation in the b value. We then compared our output with that of a conventional method using data of earthquakes that occurred in Tohoku and Kumamoto regions in Japan. Our results indicate that the proposed method has the advantage of estimating temporal variation of the b value and forecasting magnitude. Moreover, our research suggests no heightened probability of a large earthquake in the Tohoku region, in contrast to previous studies. Simultaneously, there is the potential of a large earthquake in the Kumamoto region, emphasizing the need for enhanced monitoring.

Abstract:SUMMARY Earthquakes are major hazards to humans, buildings and infrastructure. Early warning methods aim to provide advance note of incoming strong shaking to enable preventive action and mitigate seismic risk. Their usefulness depends on accuracy, the relation between true, missed and false alerts and timeliness, the time between a warning and the arrival of strong shaking. Current approaches suffer from apparent aleatoric uncertainties due to simplified modelling or short warning times. Here we propose a novel early warning method, the deep-learning based transformer earthquake alerting model (TEAM), to mitigate these limitations. TEAM analyses raw, strong motion waveforms of an arbitrary number of stations at arbitrary locations in real-time, making it easily adaptable to changing seismic networks and warning targets. We evaluate TEAM on two regions with high seismic hazard, Japan and Italy, that are complementary in their seismicity. On both data sets TEAM outperforms existing early warning methods considerably, offering accurate and timely warnings. Using domain adaptation, TEAM even provides reliable alerts for events larger than any in the training data, a property of highest importance as records from very large events are rare in many regions.

Abstract:Abstract Tsunami warning centres face the challenging task of rapidly forecasting tsunami threat immediately after an earthquake, when there is high uncertainty due to data deficiency. Here we introduce Probabilistic Tsunami Forecasting (PTF) for tsunami early warning. PTF explicitly treats data- and forecast-uncertainties, enabling alert level definitions according to any predefined level of conservatism, which is connected to the average balance of missed-vs-false-alarms. Impact forecasts and resulting recommendations become progressively less uncertain as new data become available. Here we report an implementation for near-source early warning and test it systematically by hindcasting the great 2010 M8.8 Maule (Chile) and the well-studied 2003 M6.8 Zemmouri-Boumerdes (Algeria) tsunamis, as well as all the Mediterranean earthquakes that triggered alert messages at the Italian Tsunami Warning Centre since its inception in 2015, demonstrating forecasting accuracy over a wide range of magnitudes and earthquake types.

Abstract:ABSTRACT An earthquake early warning (EEW) system rapidly analyzes seismic data to report the occurrence of an earthquake before strong shaking is felt at a site. In Japan, the integrated particle filter (IPF) method, a new source-estimation algorithm, was recently incorporated into the EEW system to improve the source-estimation accuracy during active seismicity. The problem of the current IPF method is that it uses the trigger information computed at each station in a specific format as the input and is therefore applicable to only limited seismic networks. This study proposes the extended IPF (IPFx) method to deal with continuous waveforms and merge all Japanese real-time seismic networks into a single framework. The new source determination algorithm processes seismic waveforms in two stages. The first stage (single-station processing) extracts trigger and amplitude information from continuous waveforms. The second stage (network processing) accumulates information from multiple stations and estimates the location and magnitude of ongoing earthquakes based on Bayesian inference. In 10 months of continuous online experiments, the IPFx method showed good performance in detecting earthquakes with maximum seismic intensity ≥3 in the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) catalog. By merging multiple seismic networks into a single EEW system, the warning time of the current EEW system can be improved further. The IPFx method provides accurate shaking estimation even at the beginning of event detection and achieves seismic intensity error <0.25 s after detecting an event. This method correctly avoided two major false alarms on 5 January 2018 and 30 July 2020. The IPFx method offers the potential of expanding the JMA IPF method to global seismic networks.

Magnitude and rupture duration from high frequency teleseismic P wave with projected landweber deconvolution

Abstract:Earthquake magnitude and rupture duration are among the most important parameters characterizing an earthquake for the purpose of early tsunami warning. While they can be routinely determined from broadband P waveforms with iterative inversion procedures, the inversion procedures may fail when the rupture either lasts longer than the interval between P and later arrivals or requires too much time or human intervention. Little contaminated by later arrivals, high frequency P waves are useful for modeling earthquake source processes, though the envelope waveform is affected by strong scattering in lithosphere. With high frequency envelopes from aftershocks as Empirical Green’s Function (EGF), the coda effects can be removed and more accurate relative source time function (RSTF) of the main shock can be obtained. Assuming that RSTFs cannot be negative, we use the projected Landweber deconvolution method (PLD) to obtain high frequency RSTFs because PLD method has the advantage of non-negativity, causality, and compactness (finite duration). We are able to determine rupture durations of four large earthquakes: the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake, the 2005 Nias event, the 2006 Java event, and the 2011 Tokuko earthquake. The rupture durations of the Sumatra-Andaman, Nias, and Tohuko events are found to be around 550, 110, and 120 s respectively, consistent with previous studies. The rupture duration of the Java event is about 130 s, supporting that the Java event is a tsunami earthquake. The magnitudes of these earthquakes are found to depend on both the amplitude and the duration of the deconvolved waveforms, and can be approximated by integrating these waveforms.
Improving the Rapidity of Magnitude Estimation for Earthquake Early Warning Systems for Railways

Abstract:To improve the performance of earthquake early warning (EEW) systems, we propose an approach that utilizes the time-dependence of P-wave displacements to estimate the earthquake magnitude (M) based on the relationship between M and the displacement. The traditional seismological understanding posits that this relationship achieves statistical significance when the displacement reaches its final peak value, resulting in the adoption of time-constant coefficients. However, considering the potential for earlier establishment of the relationship's significance than conventionally assumed, we analyze waveforms observed in Japan and determine the intercept in the relationship as a function of time from the P-wave onset. We demonstrate that our approach reduces the underestimation of M in the initial P-wave stages compared to the conventional technique. Consequently, we find a significant rise in the number of earlier warnings in the Japanese railway EEW system. Due to the inherent trade-off between the immediacy and accuracy of alarm outputs, the proposed method unavoidably leads to an increase in the frequency of alerts. Nonetheless, if deemed acceptable by system users, our approach can contribute to EEW performance improvement.

Abstract:The dynamic behavior of inelastic structures during an earthquake is a complicated non-stationary process that is affected by the random characteristics of seismic ground motions. The conventional Fourier analysis describes the feature of a dynamic process by decomposing the signal into infinitely long sine and cosine series, which loses all time-located information. However, both time and frequency localizations are necessary for the analysis of an evolutionary spectrum of non-stationary processes. In this paper, an analytical approach for seismic ground motions is developed by applying the wavelet transform, which focuses on the energy input to the structure. The procedure of identification of the instantaneous modal parameters based on the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is given in detail. And then, a novel method using the auto-regressive moving average (ARMA), called “prediction extension”, is presented to remedy the edge effect during the numerical computation of the CWT. The effectiveness of the method is verified by the use of the benchmark model developed by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Finally, a scale model with three-storey reinforced concrete frame-share wall structure is made and tested on a shaking table to investigate the relation between the dynamic properties of structures and energy accumulation and its change rates during the earthquake. The results have shown that the wavelet transform is able to provide a deep insight into the identity of transient signals through time-frequency maps of the time variant spectral decomposition.
The Impact of 3D Finite-Fault Information on Ground-Motion Forecasting for Earthquake Early Warning

Abstract:ABSTRACT We identify aspects of finite-source parameterization that strongly affect the accuracy of estimated ground motion for earthquake early warning (EEW). EEW systems aim to alert users to impending shaking before it reaches them. The U.S. West Coast EEW system, ShakeAlert, currently uses two algorithms based on seismic data to characterize the earthquake’s location, magnitude, and origin time, treating it as a point or line source. From this information, ShakeAlert calculates shaking intensity and alerts locations where shaking estimates exceed a threshold. Several geodetic EEW algorithms under development would provide 3D finite-fault information. We investigate conditions under which this information produces sufficiently better intensity estimates to potentially improve alerting. Using scenario crustal and subduction interface sources, we (1) identify the most influential source geometry parameters for an EEW algorithm’s shaking forecast, and (2) assess the intensity alert thresholds and magnitude ranges for which more detailed source characterization affects alert accuracy. We find that alert regions determined using 3D-source representations of correct magnitude and faulting mechanism are generally more accurate than those obtained using line sources. If a line-source representation is used and magnitude is calculated from the estimated length, then incorrect length estimates significantly degrade alert region accuracy. In detail, the value of 3D-source characterization depends on the user’s chosen alert threshold, tectonic regime, and faulting style. For the suite of source models we tested, the error in shaking intensity introduced by incorrect geometry could reach levels comparable to the intrinsic uncertainty in ground-motion calculations (e.g., 0.5–1.3 modified Mercalli intensity [MMI] units for MMI 4.5) but, especially for crustal sources, was often less. For subduction interface sources, 3D representations substantially improved alert area accuracy compared to line sources, and incorrect geometry parameters were more likely to cause error in calculated shaking intensity that exceeded uncertainties.
