Abstract:The mechanism and rupture process of the giant 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake (Mw 9.0) are still poorly understood due to lack of permanent near-field observations. Using seismic arrival times recorded by dense seismograph networks on land and at ocean floor, we determine a detailed seismic tomography model of the megathrust zone beneath the Tohoku forearc. Our results show that the coseismic slip of the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake initiated at a boundary between a down-dip high-velocity anomaly and an up-dip low-velocity anomaly. The slow anomaly at shallow depths near the Japan trench may reflect low-rigidity materials that are close to the free surface, resulting in large slip and weak high-frequency radiation. Our new tomographic model can account for not only large slip near the trench but also weak high-frequency radiation from the shallow rupture areas.

Inversion of High-Rate (1 Sps) GPS Data for Rupture Process of the 11 March 2011 Tohoku Earthquake (Mw9.1)

Abstract:[1] The space-time fault displacement history of the 11 March 2011 Tohoku (Mw 9.1) megathrust earthquake is obtained by least-squares inversion of high-rate (1 sample per second) GPS ground motions recorded in Japan. Complete near-source time-varying and static ground motions for periods ≥25 s are fit in the inversion using a normal mode formalism to compute the Green functions. The basic rupture pattern is stable for various choices of model parameters and solution smoothing, and excellent fits to the complete seismo-geodetic ground motions are obtained. The preferred solution has concentrations of slip near the trench and hypocenter, with sub-fault source time function durations of ∼30–70 s and maximum slip of ∼60 m. Down-dip slip spreads over a wider area with smaller maximum slip (<∼10–15 m). Inversion of the high-rate GPS data exploits both the timing and total displacement information in the ground motions, yielding stable estimates of the seismic moment (∼4.8 × 1022 Nm; Mw = 9.1) and slip distribution.

Abstract:Xu et al. (2013) and Han et al. (2015) have reported unusual behaviors of geomagnetic diurnal variation (GDV) in the vertical component prior to the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku earthquake (Mw 9.0). To make a better understanding of this phenomenon, temporal-spatial analyses of GDV have been applied in this study. Geomagnetic data of long-term observations at 17 stations in Japan have been analyzed using the same method in Han et al. (2015). Ratios of diurnal variation range between the reference station KAK and the target stations have been computed. After removing seasonal variations, the 15-day backward running mean values of the ratios in the vertical component shows a clear anomaly exceeding the statistical threshold about 2 months before the mega event at both ESA and MIZ stations in the Tohoku Region. Locations of anomalies in spatial distribution show a good correlation with the epicenter of the Mw 9.0 earthquake. These spatiotemporal results are consistent with those obtained from other independent observations such as groundwater level and GPS displacements. The coupling of multiple pre-earthquake phenomena may help to understand the preparation process of a mega earthquake in the subduction zone. (C) 2016 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
Far-field Coseismic Displacements Associated with the 2011 Tohoku-oki Earthquake in Japan Observed by Global Positioning System

Abstract:Analysis of GEONET observations covering the entire territory of Japan shows that the great Tohoku-oki earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011 off the east coast of Honshu in Japan caused an eastward movement of the northern part of the island by as much as 5.3 m. The GPS data from TEONET in China were used to derive far-field coseismic displacements and to assess the impact of the Tohoku-oki earthquake on crustal deformation in eastern China. The results reveal that the coseismic horizontal displacements induced by the earthquake are the level of millimeters to centimeters in North and Northeast China, with a maximum of 35 mm. Strain analysis also indicates that the earthquake resulted in an increase in the tensile strain on the north-northeast trending faults in North and Northeast China. The tensile strain imposed on the Yilan-Yitong and Dunhua-Mishan faults is more significant than that imposed on the faults in North China; the maximum normal strain reaches about 40 nano-strain. Considering that the static Coulomb stress loaded on the faults is limited, its effect on the regional seismic activity may not be significant.

Abstract:The great 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake (Mw 9.0) and its 339 foreshocks and 5,609 aftershocks (9-27 March 2011) were relocated using a three-dimensional seismic velocity model and local P and S wave arrival times. The distribution of relocated hypocenters was compared with a tomographic image of the Northeast Japan forearc. The comparison indicates that the rupture nucleation of the largest events in the Tohoku-oki sequence, including the mainshock, was controlled by structural heterogeneities in the megathrust zone. The Ionospheric view of the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake seismic source: the first 60 seconds of the rupture

Abstract:Using the specific satellite line of sight geometry and station location with respect to the source, Thomas et al. [Scientific Reports, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-018-30476-9] developed a method to infer the detection altitude of co-seismic ionospheric perturbations observed in Global Positioning System (GPS) - Total Electron Content (TEC) measurements during the Mw 7.4 March 9, 2011 Sanriku-Oki earthquake, a foreshock of the Mw 9.0, March 11, 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. Therefore, in addition to the spatio-temporal evolution, the altitude information of the seismically induced ionospheric signatures can also be derived now using GPS-TEC technique. However, this method considered a point source, in terms of a small rupture area (~90 km) during the Tohoku foreshock, for the generation of seismo-acoustic waves in 3D space and time. In this article, we explore further efficacy of GPS-TEC technique during co-seismic ionospheric sounding for an extended seismic source varying simultaneously in space and time akin to the rupture of Mw 9.0 Tohoku-Oki mainshock and the limitations to be aware of in such context. With the successful execution of the method by Thomas et al. during the Tohoku-Oki mainshock, we not only estimate the detection altitude of GPS-TEC derived co-seismic ionospheric signatures but also delineate, for the first time, distinct ground seismic sources responsible for the generation of these perturbations, which evolved during the initial 60 seconds of the rupture. Simulated tsunami water excitation over the fault region, to envisage the evolution of crustal deformation in space and time along the rupture, formed the base for our model analysis. Further, the simulated water displacement assists our proposed novel approach to delineate the ground seismic sources entirely based on the ensuing ionospheric perturbations which were otherwise not well reproduced by the ground rupture process within this stipulated time. Despite providing the novel information on the segmentation of the Tohoku-Oki seismic source based on the co-seismic ionospheric response to the initial 60 seconds of the event, our model could not reproduce precise rupture kinematics over this period. This shortcoming is also credited to the specific GPS satellite-station viewing geometries.

Abstract:An earthquake causes a sudden rock-mass redistribution through fault rupture and generates seismic waves that cause bulk density variations propagating with them. Both processes induce gravity perturbations whose signals propagate with the speed of light and therefore can arrive at remote stations earlier than the fastest elastic P wave. In turn, the gravity perturbations generate secondary seismic sources everywhere within the earth, a part of which around the observation locations can cause ground motion prior to the direct P wave arrival there, too. Recently, these so-called prompt elasto-gravity signals (PEGS) of large seismic events like the 2011 Mw 9.1 Tohoku earthquake have been detected using the data recorded by broadband seismometers and superconducting gravimeters. Though the physics of the PEGS has been well understood, the tools used so far for a realistic modelling of them are complicated and computationally intensive. In this study, we present a new and straightforward approach that solves the full-coupled elasto-gravitational boundary-value problem more accurately, but no more complicated than to compute synthetic seismograms in a conventional way. Using the new tool, we simulate the complete PEGS of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake based on a realistic kinematic finite-fault source model. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive investigation of potential uses of PEGS in modern seismology. As an example, we show particularly that the major source parameters like the moment magnitude, the rupture duration and the focal mechanism of a megathrust earthquake like the 2011 Tohoku earthquake can be estimated robustly using the measured PEGS data.
Relocating the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquakes (M 6.0–9.0)

Abstract:The great Tohoku-oki earthquake (Mw 9.0) on 11 March 2011 was accompanied by nearly 100 large foreshocks and aftershocks (M≥6.0) in the Northeast Japan forearc. In this study we relocated 77 of these large events using three different velocity models. An updated three-dimensional velocity model significantly reduced the travel-time residuals in the earthquake relocation. We found that the large thrust earthquakes are generally located in or around high-velocity patches, suggesting that the generation of the large thrust earthquakes is controlled by structural heterogeneities in the megathrust zone. The high-velocity patches may represent asperities in the megathrust zone where the subducting Pacific plate and the overriding Okhotsk plate may be coupled strongly. Many non-thrust earthquakes occurred in the crust of the overriding Okhotsk plate, indicating that the stress field there has been changed by the Tohoku-oki mainshock. The present results may improve our understanding of the subduction dynamics and seismotectonics of the Northeast Japan arc.
The Seismotectonic Movements in the Period Range of a Few Minutes before the Catastrophic Earthquake of March 11, 2011 in Japan

Abstract:We studied records of vertical ground velocity near broadband seismic stations installed around the epicenter of the magnitude 9, March 11, 2011 Tohoku earthquake. The MAJO station had been recording a stable daily behavior of seismic noise during 15 years before the earthquake. The station is the nearest to the epicenter, and is at a distance of 386 km from it. In 2009 pulses were identified exceeding 10% of the daily behavior. The pulses were gradually increasing and decreasing in amplitude, and lasted a few minutes. They occurred under quiet meteorological conditions and geomagnetic activity. No pulses of this kind were recorded at stations farther than 700 km from the epicenter. It is supposed that the earthquake was preceded by movements in the lithosphere beneath Japan and in the adjacent part of the Pacific Ocean.

Abstract:Continuous geodetic baseline measurements using the fixed-point GPS baseline determination network have been undertaken in the Kanto-Tokai district, central Japan. A crustal deformation which was associated with the 1989 seismic swarm and which preceded a volcanic eruption east of the Izu Peninsula was observed. We observed time variations of a 10km length baseline vector between Hatsushima (HTS) and Ito (ITO) across the swarm area, as well as those of a 40km length baseline vector between HTS and Shimoda (SMD). It was found that the position of ITO, south of the activity region, moved 8.2cm southward, 2.5cm eastward and 8.7cm upward, and the position of HTS, north of the region, moved 8.6cm eastward, 5.5cm northward and 3.3cm upward, resulting in the baseline extension of 14.5cm during the period of the active swarm prior to the submarine volcanic eruption. The detected crustal movements were found to be consistent with a proposed fault model.
Detecting Multiple Surface Waves Excited by the 2011 Tohoku‐Oki Earthquake from GEONET Observations

Abstract:Multiple surface waves circling the earth excited by the 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku‐Oki earthquake were well recorded by both global and regional broadband (BB) seismometer networks. In this study, we explore the ability of kinematic solutions of Global Positioning System (GPS) observations from GEONET to reveal the phases of multiple surface waves. Even though multipath effects and common mode errors are not reduced, the wave packages of G2/G3 of Love waves and R2/R3 of Rayleigh waves are clearly identified from the raw GPS displacement time series in the 100–500 s periods, which show great coherency with BB seismograms in both amplitude and time. The arrival times of these wave packages tally with the synthetic value by the group velocities from the global dispersion model. We consider that kinematic solutions of continuous GPS measurement can act as a supplementary tool for studying global surface‐wave dispersion.

Focal mechanism solutions of the Tohoku-Oki Earthquake sequence and their geodynamical implications

Abstract:The stress state of Japan Sea region and its evolution are both concerned greatly by geoscientists. In this paper, we study Harvard CMT solutions of the March 11, 2011 Tohoku-Oki Earthquake sequence from March 11th, 2011 to March 15th, 2012 by cluster analysis and find that they might be roughly sorted to four groups. The first group are low-angle thrust events, which are the same as the main shock and are mostly interplate events. The second group events are normal-fault earthquakes with principal extensional direction roughly pointing to E-W direction. Most of these earthquakes were located in the fore-arc uplift region of the Pacific plate, while some others occurred in the fore-arc accretionary wedge. The third group events are also normal-fault events mainly occurred in the fore-arc accretionary wedge though their principal extensional directions roughly parallel the Japan Trench. The forth group are reverse earthquakes with principal compressional directions roughly along N-S direction. We observe that Harvard CMT solutions of 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake sequence are obviously different from before. They show that Tohoku-Oki Earthquake sequence have released most of elastic energy in the main shock area. As a result, Pacific Plate and North America Plate have decoupled in the main rupture zone, which lowered the E-W compressional stress in Japan Sea and Northeastern China. However, Japan Sea Subduction Zone has not completely decoupled with North American Plate, even though the stress level in this region is lowered now. We claim that releasing of accumulated stress in the region of Japan Sea and Northeast China could lower the seismic hazard of roughly E-W direction compressive events, while tend to increase the activity of NNE-SSW strike-slip events as well as the volcanism, especially in Honshu. The characteristics of the Focal Mechanism Solutions of the Tohoku-Oki Earthquake Sequence remind us that stress state as well as evolution of Japan Sea might depend to some extent on coupling state between Pacific Plate and North American Plate. Long-lasting weak coupling might lead to re-opening of Japan Sea Basin because it will not only guarantee a relatively extensional environment, but also provide necessary water to deep depth.
Long- and Short-Term Earthquake Forecasts during the Tohoku Sequence

Abstract:We consider two issues related to the 2011 Tohoku mega-earthquake: (1) what is the repeat time for the largest earthquakes in this area, and (2) what are the possibilities of numerical short-term forecasts during the 2011 earthquake sequence in the Tohoku area. Starting in 1999 we have carried out long- and short-term forecasts for Japan and the surrounding areas using the GCMT catalog. The forecasts predict the earthquake rate per area, time, magnitude unit and earthquake focal mechanisms. Long-term forecasts indicate that the repeat time for the m9 earthquake in the Tohoku area is of the order of 350 years. We have archived several forecasts made before and after the Tohoku earthquake. The long-term rate estimates indicate that, as expected, the forecasted rate changed only by a few percent after the Tohoku earthquake, whereas due to the foreshocks, the short-term rate increased by a factor of more than 100 before the mainshock event as compared to the long-term rate. After the Tohoku mega-earthquake the rate increased by a factor of more than 1000. These results suggest that an operational earthquake forecasting strategy needs to be developed to take the increase of the short-term rates into account.

Abstract:To clarify the generating mechanism of the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake (Mw 9.0) and the induced tsunami, we determined high-resolution tomographic images of the Northeast Japan forearc. Significant lateral variations of seismic velocity are visible in the megathrust zone, and most large interplate thrust earthquakes are found to occur in high-velocity (high-V) areas. These high-V zones may represent high-strength asperities at the plate interface where the subducting Pacific plate and the overriding Okhotsk plate are coupled strongly. A shallow high-V zone with large coseismic slip near the Japan Trench may account for the mainshock asperity of the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake. Because it is an isolated asperity surrounded by low-velocity patches, most stress on it was released in a short time and the plate interface became decoupled after the Mw 9.0 earthquake. Thus the overriding Okhotsk plate there was shot out toward the Japan Trench and caused the huge tsunami. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Was the magnitude (M = 9.0R) of the mega-earthquake of Japan (11th of March, 2011) predictable? An analysis based on the Lithospheric Seismic Energy Flow Model (LSEFM)

Abstract:The Tohoku EQ (11th of March, 2011, M = 9.0) in Japan falsified the proposed EQ magnitude range (M = 7.0 - 8.5) of the same seismogenic regional area that had been determined by the compiled hazard maps, study of historical data, or other probabilistic methods while a larger magnitude (M > 9.0) had been proposed for all subduction zones. The observed discrepancy between the proposed EQ magnitude range and the actual one of the Tohoku EQ is studied in this work in terms of the cumulative seismic energy release of the study area and by the use of the Lithospheric Seismic Energy Flow Model (LSEFM). The results indicate that the Tohoku mega-earthquake magnitude could be predicted quite accurately provided that a long past seismic history had been available for use by the LSEFM procedure. Moreover, the presence, of the missing historic 1855 EQ (7.0 < M < 8.0) from seismic catalogs, was predicted backwards by the LSEFM method and its existence was verified by the Ishibashi (2004) work on Japanese historic seismicity. The recurrence time of the Tohoku EQ is estimated as being at least as 100 years. It is proposed frequent monitoring of the Japanese area seismic potential by compiling regularly in time the corresponding seismic potential maps. Prognostic Properties of Instantaneous Amplitudes Maxima of Earth Surface Tremor

Abstract:A method is proposed for analyzing the tremor of the earth's surface, measured by GPS, in order to highlight prognostic effects. The method is applied to the analysis of daily time series of vertical displacements in Japan. The network of 1047 stations is divided into 15 clusters. The Huang Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) is applied to the time series of the principal components from the clusters, with subsequent calculation of instantaneous amplitudes using the Hilbert transform. To ensure the stability of estimates of the waveforms of the EMD decomposition, 1000 independent additive realizations of white noise of limited amplitude were averaged before the Hilbert transform. Using a parametric model of the intensities of point processes, we analyze the connections between the instants of sequences of times of the largest local maxima of instantaneous amplitudes, averaged over the number of clusters and the times of earthquakes in the vicinity of Japan with minimum magnitude thresholds of 5.5 for the time interval 2012–2023. It is shown that the sequence of the largest local maxima of instantaneous amplitudes significantly more often precedes the moments of time of earthquakes (roughly speaking, has an "influence") than the reverse "influence" of earthquakes on the maxima of amplitudes.

Abstract:On January 1, 2024, a devastating M 7.6 earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, resulting in significant casualties and property damage. Utilizing information from the first six days after the earthquake, this article analyzes the seismic source characteristics, disaster situation, and emergency response of this earthquake. The results show: 1) The earthquake rupture was of the thrust type, with aftershock distribution showing a north-east-oriented belt-like feature of 150 km. 2) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR), observations detected significant westward to north-westward co-seismic displacement near the epicenter, with the maximum horizontal displacement reaching 1.2 m and the vertical uplift displacement reaching 4 m. A two-segment fault inversion model fits the observational data well. 3) Near the epicenter, large Peak Ground Velocity (PGV) and Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) were observed, with the maxima reaching 145 cm/s and 2681 gal, respectively, and the intensity reached the highest level 7 on the Japanese (Japan Meteorological Agency, JMA) intensity standard, which is higher than level 10 of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) standard. 4) The observation of the very rare multiple strong pulse-like ground motion (PLGM) waveform poses a topic worthy of research in the field of earthquake engineering. 5) As of January 7, the earthquake had left 128 deaths and 560 injuries in Ishikawa Prefecture, with 1305 buildings completely or partially destroyed, and had triggered a chain of disasters including tsunamis, fires, slope failures, and road damage. Finally, this paper summarizes the emergency rescue, information dissemination, and other disaster response and management measures taken in response to this earthquake. This work provides a reference case for carrying out effective responses, and offers lessons for handling similar events in the future.

Abstract:The kinematic rupture process of the 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku earthquake is inverted with an elliptical-patches method, using a genetic algorithm, for the purpose of rapid and robust estimation of the source parameters of a mega-earthquake. We use the ground-displacement field provided by a continuous GPS network and the ground-velocity field recorded by acceleration networks. In addition to the typical inversion procedure in which a data duration long enough to cover the whole rupture process is used, inversions based on shorter signals, giving an incomplete view over the ground shaking sequence, are also carried out. How fast can a robust estimation of the source parameters be obtained? Using the elliptical approximation, we find that robust solutions of Mw ~ 9.0-earthquakes are rather quickly obtained regardless of the frequency band and the elliptical patch description. It is also confirmed that, because of the absence of off-shore recording stations on the east side of the fault, some uncertainties in the rupture process cannot be completely removed. In fact, at the very low frequencies considered, the western part of the fault (deeper portion) contributes more significantly to the recorded signals than does the other end close to the trench. This problem also prevents refinement of the description of the rupture process, in particular when using more than one ellipse.
