Abstract:Building on the recently derived inhomogeneous mode-coupling theory, we extend the generalised mode-coupling theory of supercooled liquids to inhomogeneous environments. This provides a first-principles-based, systematic and rigorous way of deriving high-point dynamical susceptibilities from variations of the many-body dynamic structure factors with respect to their conjugate field. This new framework allows for a novel and fully microscopic possibility to probe for collective relaxation mechanisms in supercooled liquids near the mode-coupling glass transition.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problem of dynamic heterogeneity in the glass - like transition. Specifically, by extending the Generalised Mode - Coupling Theory (GMCT) to non - uniform environments, the paper provides a method for systematically deriving high - order dynamic susceptibilities from basic principles. These high - order dynamic susceptibilities can explore more deeply the collective relaxation mechanisms of super - cooled liquids when approaching the mode - coupling glass - transition point.
### Main problems
1. **The nature of the glass - like transition**: Despite decades of in - depth research, the nature of the glass - like transition remains an unsolved problem in solid - state physics. In particular, the dynamical heterogeneities of glass - forming liquids is a very interesting phenomenon, manifested as the coexistence of clusters of correlated mobile particles and regions of immobile particles.
2. **Quantification of dynamic heterogeneity**: The traditional four - point dynamical susceptibility (\(\chi_4(t)\)) is the standard method for measuring dynamic heterogeneity, but its measurement is very difficult both computationally and experimentally. The paper proposes a new framework to study dynamic heterogeneity more comprehensively by introducing multi - point dynamic susceptibilities.
3. **Derivation of high - order dynamic susceptibilities**: Through the Inhomogeneous Generalised Mode - Coupling Theory (IGMCT) in non - uniform environments, the paper derives the equations of multi - point dynamic susceptibilities, thus providing a systematic method to study dynamic heterogeneity in complex liquids.
### Key contributions
- **Extension of the theoretical framework**: The paper extends GMCT to non - uniform environments, taking into account the influence of spatially varying external fields on density modes, thereby establishing IGMCT.
- **Definition of multi - point dynamic susceptibilities**: By introducing multi - point dynamic susceptibilities \(\vartheta_{2n + 1}(k_1,\ldots,k_n;k'_1,\ldots,k'_n,q_0,t)\), the paper provides a new method to study collective relaxation mechanisms.
- **Numerical simulation and simplified model**: The paper proposes a simplified zero - dimensional model for numerically solving the equations of multi - point dynamic susceptibilities and shows the behavior of these susceptibilities at different levels.
### Mathematical expressions
- **Four - point dynamical susceptibility**:
\[
\chi_4(t - t')=\int dr\,G_4(r,t - t')
\]
where \(G_4(r,t - t')\) is the four - point correlation function, and \(\xi_4(t)\) is the dominant dynamic length scale related to heterogeneity.
- **Multi - point dynamical susceptibility**:
\[
\vartheta_{2n+1}(k_1,\ldots,k_n;k'_1,\ldots,k'_n,q_0,t)=\lim_{U\rightarrow0}\frac{\delta F_{2n}(k_1,\ldots,k_n;k'_1,\ldots,k'_n,t)}{\delta U(q_0)}
\]
### Conclusion
By extending GMCT to non - uniform environments, the paper provides a new method to study the dynamic heterogeneity of glass - forming liquids. These theoretical frameworks and numerical results not only help to understand the nature of the glass - like transition, but also provide new tools for experiments and numerical simulations.
