Abstract:The success of relativistic hydrodynamics as an essential part of the phenomenological description of heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC has motivated a significant body of theoretical work concerning its fundamental aspects. Our review presents these developments from the perspective of the underlying microscopic physics, using the language of quantum field theory, relativistic kinetic theory, and holography. We discuss the gradient expansion, the phenomenon of hydrodynamization, as well as several models of hydrodynamic evolution equations, highlighting the interplay between collective long-lived and transient modes in relativistic matter. Our aim to provide a unified presentation of this vast subject -- which is naturally expressed in diverse mathematical languages -- has also led us to include several new results on the large-order behaviour of the hydrodynamic gradient~expansion.

Abstract:Relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) provides an extremely useful description of the low-energy long-wavelength phenomena in a variety of physical systems from quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions to matters in supernovas, compact stars, and early universe. We review the recent theoretical progresses of RMHD, such as a formulation of RMHD from the perspective of magnetic flux conservation using the entropy-current analysis, the nonequilibrium statistical operator approach applied to quantum electrodynamics, and the relativistic kinetic theory. We discuss how the transport coefficients in RMHD are computed in kinetic theory and perturbative quantum field theories. We also explore the collective modes and instabilities in RMHD with a special emphasis on the role of chirality in a parity-odd plasma. We also give some future prospects of RMHD, including the interaction with spin hydrodynamics and the new kinetic framework with magnetic flux conservation.

Abstract:We construct the general theory of first-order relativistic hydrodynamics for a fluid exhibiting a chiral anomaly, including all possible viscous terms allowed by symmetry. Using standard techniques, we compute the necessary and sufficient conditions for this theory to be relativistically causal in the nonlinear regime and for thermal equilibria to be linearly stable. This is the first theory of first-order chiral hydrodynamics suitable for numerical simulations.

Abstract:We derive equations of motion for dissipative spin hydrodynamics from kinetic theory up to first order in a gradient expansion. Choosing a specific form of the matching conditions, relating the change in the spin potential to the spin diffusion and spin energy, we then show that the equations of motion, linearized around homogeneous global equilibrium, are causal and stable in any Lorentz frame, if certain sufficient conditions on the transport coefficients are fulfilled.

Abstract:The study of thermal fluctuations in relativistic hydrodynamics has led to numerous important developments in the last decade. We present a bird's eye view of the recent advances on the theory of fluctuations on three fronts; stochastic hydrodynamics, hydro-kinetics where fluctuations are included as additional modes that satisfy deterministic evolution equations, and effective field theory formulation of relativistic hydrodynamics. We compare and contrast these different but complimentary frameworks and highlight various recent progresses in each of them.

Abstract:In Newtonian and relativistic hydrodynamics the Riemann problem consists of calculating the evolution of a fluid which is initially characterized by two states having different values of uniform rest-mass density, pressure and velocity. When the fluid is allowed to relax, one of three possible wave-patterns is produced, corresponding to the propagation in opposite directions of two nonlinear hydrodynamical waves. New effects emerge in a special relativistic Riemann problem when velocities tangential to the initial discontinuity surface are present. We show that a smooth transition from one wave-pattern to another can be produced by varying the initial tangential velocities while otherwise maintaining the initial states unmodified. These special relativistic effects are produced by the coupling through the relativistic Lorentz factors and do not have a Newtonian counterpart.

Abstract:Relativistic generalization of hydrodynamic theory has attracted much attention from a theoretical point of view. However, it has many important practical applications in high energy as well as astrophysical contexts. Despite various attempts to formulate relativistic hydrodynamics, no definitive consensus has been achieved. In this work, we propose to test the predictions of four types of \emph{first-order} hydrodynamic theories for non-perfect fluids in the light of numerically exact molecular dynamics simulations of a fully relativistic particle system in the low density regime. In this regard, we study the propagation of density, velocity and heat fluctuations in a wide range of temperatures using extensive simulations and compare them to the corresponding analytic expressions we obtain for each of the proposed theories. As expected in the low temperature classical regime all theories give the same results consistent with the numerics. In the high temperature extremely relativistic regime, not all considered theories are distinguishable from one another. However, in the intermediate regime, a meaningful distinction exists in the predictions of various theories considered here. We find that the predictions of the recent formulation due to Tsumura-Kunihiro-Ohnishi are more consistent with our numerical results than the traditional theories due to Meixner, modified Eckart and modified Marle-Stewart.

Abstract:We review some recent developments in mathematical aspects of relativistic fluids. The goal is to provide a quick entry point to some research topics of current interest that is accessible to graduate students and researchers from adjacent fields, as well as to researches working on broader aspects of relativistic fluid dynamics interested in its mathematical formalism. Instead of complete proofs, which can be found in the published literature, here we focus on the proofs' main ideas and key concepts. After an introduction to the relativistic Euler equations, we cover the following topics: a new wave-transport formulation of the relativistic Euler equations tailored to applications; the problem of shock formation for relativistic Euler; rough (i.e., low-regularity) solutions to the relativistic Euler equations; the relativistic Euler equations with a physical vacuum boundary; relativistic fluids with viscosity. We finish with a discussion of open problems and future directions of research.

Relativistic Viscous Hydrodynamics in the Density Frame: Numerical Tests and Comparisons

Abstract:We conduct a numerical study of relativistic viscous fluid dynamics in the Density Frame for one-dimensional fluid flows. The Density Frame is a formulation of relativistic viscous hydrodynamics that is first-order in time, requires no auxiliary fields, and has no non-hydrodynamic modes. We compare our results to QCD kinetic theory simulations and find excellent agreement within the regime of applicability of hydrodynamics. Additionally, the Density Frame results remain well-behaved and robust near the boundary of applicability. We also compare our findings to the second-order-in-time hydrodynamic theory developed by Bemfica, Disconzi, Noronha, and Kovtun (BDNK) and a well-known Müller-Israel-Stewart-type hydrodynamics code, MUSIC, which is commonly used to simulate heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:We review several facets of the hydrodynamic description of the relativistic heavy ion collisions, starting from the historical motivation to the present understandings of the observed collective aspects of experimental data, especially those of the most recent RHIC and LHC results. In this report, we particularly focus on the conceptual questions and the physical foundations of the validity of the hydrodynamic approach itself. We also discuss recent efforts to clarify some of the points in this direction, such as the various forms of derivations of relativistic hydrodynamics together with the limitations intrinsic to the traditional approaches, variational approaches, known analytic solutions for special cases, and several new theoretical developments. Throughout this review, we stress the role of course-graining procedure in the hydrodynamic description and discuss its relation to the physical observables through the analysis of a hydrodynamic mapping of a microscopic transport model. Several questions to be answered to clarify the physics of collective phenomena in the relativistic heavy ion collisions are pointed out.

Abstract:At its core, hydrodynamics is a many-body low-energy effective theory for the long-wavelength, long-timescale dynamics of conserved charges in systems close to thermodynamic equilibrium. It has a wide range of applications spanning from nuclear physics, astrophysics, cosmology, and more recently strongly-interacting electronic phases of matter. In solid-state systems, however, symmetries are often only approximate, and softly broken by the presence of the lattice, impurities, and defects, or because the symmetry is accidental. Therefore, the hydrodynamic regime must be expanded to include weak non-conservation effects, which lead to a theory known as quasihydrodynamics. In this thesis we make progress in understanding the theory of (quasi) hydrodynamics, with a specific focus on applications to condensed matter systems and their holographic description.

The non-relativistic limit of first-order relativistic viscous fluids

Abstract:Out-of-equilibrium effects may play an important role in the dynamics of neutron star mergers and in heavy-ion collisions. Bemfica, Disconzi, Noronha and Kovtun (BDNK) recently derived a causal, locally well-posed, and modally stable relativistic fluid model that incorporates the effects of viscosity and heat diffusion. We study the non-relativistic limit of this fluid model and show that causality for relativistic motion restricts the transport coefficients in the non-relativistic limit. This restriction provides an upper bound on the ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density for fluids that can be described as relativistic within the BDNK model and can be exactly modeled using the Navier-Stokes equation in the non-relativistic limit. Furthermore, we show that the Fourier law of heat conduction must be modified by higher gradient corrections for such fluids. We also show that the non-relativistic limit of the BDNK equations of motion are never hyperbolic, in contrast to the non-relativistic limit of extended variable models, whose non-relativistic equations of motion can be hyperbolic or not depending on the scaling of the transport coefficients present in the auxiliary equations for viscous degrees of freedom.

Abstract:Relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics finds widespread applications in high-energy nuclear physics and astrophysics. However, formulating a causal and stable theory of relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics is far from trivial; efforts to accomplish this reach back more than 50 years. In this review, we give an overview of the field and attempt a comparative assessment of (at least most of) the theories for relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics proposed until today and used in applications.

Relativistic hydrodynamic fluctuations from an effective action: causality, stability, and the information current

Abstract:Causality is necessary for retarded Green's functions to remain retarded in all inertial frames in relativity, which ensures that dissipation of fluctuations is a Lorentz invariant concept. For first-order BDNK theories with stochastic fluctuations, introduced via the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism, we show that imposing causality and stability leads to correlation functions of hydrodynamic fluctuations that only display the expected physical properties at small frequencies and wavenumber, i.e., within the expected regime of validity of the first-order approach. For second-order theories of Israel and Stewart type, constructed using the information current such that entropy production is always non-negative, a stochastic formulation is presented using the Martin-Siggia-Rose approach where imposing causality and stability leads to correlators with the desired properties. We also show how Green's functions can be determined from such an action. We identify a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, analogous to the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger symmetry, under which this Martin-Siggia-Rose action is invariant. This modified Kubo-Martin-Schwinger symmetry provides a new guide for the effective action formulation of hydrodynamic systems with dynamics not solely governed by conservation laws. Furthermore, this symmetry ensures that the principle of detailed balance is valid in a covariant manner. We employ the new symmetry to further clarify the connection between the Schwinger-Keldysh and Martin-Siggia-Rose approaches, establishing a precise link between these descriptions in second-order theories of relativistic hydrodynamics. Finally, the modified Kubo-Martin-Schwinger symmetry is used to determine the corresponding action describing diffusion in Israel-Stewart theories in a general hydrodynamic frame.

Relativistic fluid dynamics in heavy ion collisions

Abstract: This dissertation is about the study of three important issues in the theory of relativistic fluid dynamics: the stability of dissipative fluid dynamics, the shear viscosity, and fluid dynamics with triangle anomaly.(1)The second order theory of fluid dynamics is necessary for causality. However the causality cannot be guaranteed for all parameters. The constraints for parameters are then given. We also point out that the causality and the stability are inter-correlated. It is found that a causal system must be stable, but an acausal system in the boost frame at high speed must be unstable. (2)The transport coefficients can be determined in kinetic theory. We will firstly discuss about derivation of the shear viscosity via variational method in the Boltzmann equation. Secondly, we will compute the shear viscosity via AdS/CFT duality in a Bjorken boost invariant fluid with radial flow. It is found that the ratio of the shear viscosity to entropy density is consistent with the work of Policastro, Son and Starinets. As another application of AdS/CFT duality, we also investigate the property of baryons in the strongly coupled plasma. (3)As the last topic, we investigate the fluid dynamics with quantum triangle anomalies. Recently it is pointed out that the vorticity has to be introduced to relativistic fluid dynamics with anomalies to satisfy the second law of thermodynamics. These new terms are also relevant to the Chiral Magnetic Effect. We find such terms can be derived from the kinetic approach. The coefficients of the vorticity are also evaluated.
