Abstract:We demonstrate droplet manipulation using electric signals to induce the liquid to wet or dewet on a hydrophilic conductive substrate in the air without adding layers. In this phenomenon, the contact angle changes more than 15° or -20° by using the ionic surfactant mediated droplets, with only \pm3 volts of the actuation voltage.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problem of manipulating the wetting or de - wetting of droplets on a conductive silicon substrate through electric field signals. Specifically, the researchers demonstrated how to use electric field signals to control the wetting or de - wetting of liquids on conductive, hydrophilic substrates in air without adding additional coatings. This phenomenon is achieved through ion - surfactant - mediated droplets, and a driving voltage of only ±3 volts can cause the contact angle to change by more than 15° or - 20°. The main contribution of the paper is to propose a method that can simultaneously achieve electrowetting and electrodewetting on the same conductive substrate under the action of a bidirectional electric field. This method can not only simplify the construction of digital microfluidic devices, but also promote the miniaturization of the devices and expand the application range of digital microfluidic devices. In addition, the study also explored the effects of different ion - surfactant concentrations, electric field action times, and driving voltages on the change of droplet contact angles, and verified the reversibility and controllability of this mechanism.
