Abstract:We develop the theory of abstract fine structural operators and operator-premice. We identify properties, which we require of operator-premice and operators, which ensure that certain basic facts about standard premice generalize. We define fine condensation for operators $\mathcal{F}$ and show that fine condensation and iterability together ensure that $\mathcal{F}$-mice have the fundamental fine structural properties including universality and solidity of the standard parameter.

Abstract:We develop the theory of meta-iteration trees, that is, iteration trees whose base "model" is itself an ordinary iteration tree. We prove a comparison theorem for meta-iteration strategies parallel to the one for ordinary iteration strategies, and use it to show that the iteration strategy component of a mouse pair condenses to itself under weak tree embeddings. These constitute a class of embeddings between iteration trees that is significantly larger than the class of embeddings mentioned in the definition of mouse pair. We then use this very strong hull condensation property of mouse pairs to show that every iterate of a mouse pair is an iterate via a single $\lambda$-tight, normal iteration tree, and that the associated tail strategies are independent of how the iterate was reached.

Abstract:We revisit the problem of condensation for independent, identically distributed random variables with a power-law tail, conditioned by the value of their sum. For large values of the sum, and for a large number of summands, a condensation transition occurs where the largest summand accommodates the excess difference between the value of the sum and its mean. This simple scenario of condensation underlies a number of studies in statistical physics, such as, e.g., in random allocation and urn models, random maps, zero-range processes and mass transport models. Much of the effort here is devoted to presenting the subject in simple terms, reproducing known results and adding some new ones. In particular we address the question of the quantitative comparison between asymptotic estimates and exact finite-size results. Simply stated, one would like to know how accurate are the asymptotic estimates of the observables of interest, compared to their exact finite-size counterparts, to the extent that they are known. This comparison, illustrated on the particular exemple of a distribution with Lévy index equal to $3/2$, demonstrates the role of the contributions of the dip and large deviation regimes. Except for the last section devoted to a brief review of extremal statistics, the presentation is self-contained and uses simple analytical methods.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a $\lambda$-indexed (that is, Jensen indexed) premouse. We prove that $M$ is iterable with respect to standard $\lambda$-iteration rules iff $M$ is iterable with respect to a natural version of Mitchell-Steel iteration rules. Using this equivalence, we describe a background construction for $\lambda$-indexed mice, analogous to traditional background constructions for Mitchell-Steel indexed mice, and which absorbs Woodin cardinals from the background universe. We also prove some facts regarding the correspondence between standard iteration trees and u-iteration trees on premice with Mitchell-Steel indexing.

Abstract:We show that (i) the standard fine structural properties for premice follow from normal iterability (whereas the classical proof relies on iterability for stacks of normal trees), and (ii) every mouse which is finitely generated above its projectum, is an iterate of its core. That is, let $m$ be an integer and let $M$ be an $m$-sound, $(m,\omega_1+1)$-iterable premouse. Then (i) $M$ is $(m+1)$-solid and $(m+1)$-universal, $(m+1)$ condensation holds for $M$, and if $m\geq 1$ then $M$ is super-Dodd-sound, a slight strengthening of Dodd-soundness. And (ii) if there is $x\in M$ such that $M$ is the $\mathrm{r}\Sigma_{m+1}$-hull of parameters in $\rho_{m+1}^M\cup\{x\}$, then $M$ is a normal iterate of its $(m+1)$-core $C=\mathfrak{C}_{m+1}(M)$; in fact, there is an $m$-maximal iteration tree $\mathcal{T}$ on $C$, of finite length, such that $M=M^{\mathcal{T}}_\infty$, and $i^{\mathcal{T}}_{0\infty}$ is just the core embedding. Applying fact (ii), we prove that if $M\models\mathrm{ZFC}$ is a mouse and $W\subseteq M$ is a ground of $M$ via a strategically $\sigma$-closed forcing $\mathbb{P}\in W$, and if $M|\aleph_1^M\in W$ (that is, the initial segment of $M$ of height $\aleph_1^M$ is in $W$), then the forcing is trivial; that is, $M\subseteq W$. And if there is a measurable cardinal, then there is a non-solid premouse. The results hold for premice with Mitchell-Steel indexing, allowing extenders of superstrong type to appear on the extender sequence.

Abstract:This note develops Rio's proof [C. R. Math. Acad. Sci. Paris, 1995] of the rate of convergence in the Marcinkiewicz--Zygmund strong law of large numbers to the case of sums of dependent random variables with regularly varying normalizing constants. It allows us to obtain a complete convergence result for dependent sequences under uniformly bounded moment conditions. This result is new even when the underlying random variables are independent. The main theorems are applied to three different dependence structures: (i) $m$-pairwise negatively dependent random variables, (ii) $m$-extended negatively dependent random variables, and (iii) $\varphi$-mixing sequences. To our best knowledge, the results for cases (i) and (ii) are the first results in the literature on complete convergence for sequences of $m$-pairwise negatively dependent random variables and $m$-extended negatively dependent random variables under the optimal moment conditions even when $m=1$. While the results for cases (i) and (iii) unify and improve many existing ones, the result for case (ii) complements the main result of Chen et al. [J. Appl. Probab., 2010]. Affirmative answers to open questions raised by Chen et al. [J. Math. Anal. Appl., 2014] and Wu and Rosalsky [Glas. Mat. Ser. III, 2015] are also given. An example illustrating the sharpness of the main result is presented.

Abstract: Recently, the Dodgson's determinant condensation algorithm was revisited in many papers [College Math. Journal 42(1)(2011): 43--54, College Math. Journal 38(2)(2007): 85--95, Math Horizons 14(2)(2006): 12--15},etc.]. This method is attractive, but there also exist some shortcomings. In this paper, a symbolic algorithm and the corresponding problems are discussed to overcome these shortcomings. Numerical experiments show that this symbolic modified algorithm has highly sensitivity on initial configuration of the matrix in condensation process.

Abstract:We develop a unified theory of defect condensations for topological orders in all dimensions based on higher categories, higher algebras and higher representations. We show that condensing a $k$-codimensional topological defect $A$ in an $n$+1D (potentially anomalous) topological order $\mathsf C^{n+1}$ amounts to a $k$-step process. In the first step, we condense $A$ along one of the transversal directions, thus obtaining a $(k-1)$-codimensional defect $\Sigma A$, which can be further condensed as the second step, so on and so forth. In the $k$-th step, condensing $\Sigma^{k-1}A$ along the only transversal direction defines a phase transition to a new phase $\mathsf D^{n+1}$. Mathematically, a $k$-codimensional defect $A$ is condensable if it is equipped with the structure of a condensable $E_k$-algebra. In this case, $\Sigma A$ is naturally a condensable $E_{k-1}$-algebra, thus it can be further condensed. The condensed phase $\mathsf D^{n+1}$ consists of all deconfined topological defects in $\mathsf C^{n+1}$. A $k$-codimensional topological defect is deconfined if and only if it is equipped with a $k$-dimensional $A$-action, which defines an $E_k$-module over $A$. When $\mathsf C^{n+1}$ is anomaly-free, the same condensation can be alternatively defined by replacing the last two steps by a single step of condensing the $E_2$-algebra $\Sigma^{k-2}A$ directly. The condensed phase $\mathsf D^{n+1}$ is determined by the category of $E_2$-modules over $\Sigma^{k-2}A$. When $n=2$, this modified last step is precisely a usual anyon condensation in a 2+1D topological order. The proofs of the most mathematical results will appear in a mathematical companion of this paper. We also briefly discuss some generalizations and applications that naturally arise from our condensation theory such as higher Morita theory, factorization homology and the condensation theory of non-topological defects.

Abstract:We study the phenomenon of real space condensation in the steady state of a class of mass transport models where the steady state factorises. The grand canonical ensemble may be used to derive the criterion for the occurrence of a condensation transition but does not shed light on the nature of the condensate. Here, within the canonical ensemble, we analyse the condensation transition and the structure of the condensate, determining the precise shape and the size of the condensate in the condensed phase. We find two distinct condensate regimes: one where the condensate is gaussian distributed and the particle number fluctuations scale normally as $L^{1/2}$ where $L$ is the system size, and a second regime where the particle number fluctuations become anomalously large and the condensate peak is non-gaussian. Our results are asymptotically exact and can also be interpreted within the framework of sums of random variables. We further analyse two additional cases: one where the condensation transition is somewhat different from the usual second order phase transition and one where there is no true condensation transition but instead a pseudocondensate appears at superextensive densities.
Condensation in Fleming--Viot particle systems with fast selection mechanism

Abstract:We study the Fleming--Viot particle system in a discrete state space, in the regime of a fast selection mechanism, namely with killing rates which grow to infinity. This asymptotics creates a time scale separation which results in the formation of a condensate of all particles, which then evolves according to a continuous-time Markov chain with jump rates depending in a nontrivial way on both the underlying mutation dynamics and the relative speed of growth to infinity of the killing rate between neighbouring sites. We prove the convergence of the particle system and completely describe the dynamics of the condensate in the case where the number of particles is kept fixed, and partially in the case when the number of particles goes to infinity together with (but slower than) the minimal killing rate.

Condensing Against Online Adversaries

Abstract:We investigate the task of deterministically condensing randomness from Online Non-Oblivious Symbol Fixing (oNOSF) sources, a natural model for which extraction is impossible [AORSV, EUROCRYPT'20]. A $(g,\ell)$-oNOSF source is a sequence of $\ell$ blocks where at least $g$ of the blocks are good (independent and have some min-entropy) and the remaining bad blocks are controlled by an online adversary where each bad block can be arbitrarily correlated with any block that appears before it. The existence of condensers was studied in [CGR, FOCS'24]. They proved condensing impossibility results for various values of $g, \ell$ and showed the existence of condensers matching the impossibility results in the case when $n$ is extremely large compared to $\ell$. In this work, we make significant progress on proving the existence of condensers with strong parameters in almost all parameter regimes, even when $n$ is a large enough constant and $\ell$ is growing. This almost resolves the question of the existence of condensers for oNOSF sources, except when $n$ is a small constant. We construct the first explicit condensers for oNOSF sources, achieve parameters that match the existential results of [CGR, FOCS'24], and obtain an improved construction for transforming low-entropy oNOSF sources into uniform ones. We find applications of our results to collective coin flipping and sampling, well-studied problems in fault-tolerant distributed computing. We use our condensers to provide simple protocols for these problems. To understand the case of small $n$, we focus on $n=1$ which corresponds to online non-oblivious bit-fixing (oNOBF) sources. We initiate a study of a new, natural notion of influence of Boolean functions which we call online influence. We establish tight bounds on the total online influence of Boolean functions, implying extraction lower bounds.

Improved Condensers for Chor-Goldreich Sources

Abstract:One of the earliest models of weak randomness is the Chor-Goldreich (CG) source. A $(t,n,k)$-CG source is a sequence of random variables $X=(X_1,\dots,X_t)\sim(\{0,1\}^n)^t$, where each $X_i$ has min-entropy $k$ conditioned on any fixing of $X_1,\dots,X_{i-1}$. Chor and Goldreich proved that there is no deterministic way to extract randomness from such a source. Nevertheless, Doron, Moshkovitz, Oh, and Zuckerman showed that there is a deterministic way to condense a CG source into a string with small entropy gap. They gave applications of such a condenser to simulating randomized algorithms with small error and to certain cryptographic tasks. They studied the case where the block length $n$ and entropy rate $k/n$ are both constant. We study the much more general setting where the block length can be arbitrarily large, and the entropy rate can be arbitrarily small. We construct the first explicit condenser for CG sources in this setting, and it can be instantiated in a number of different ways. When the entropy rate of the CG source is constant, our condenser requires just a constant number of blocks $t$ to produce an output with entropy rate $0.9$, say. In the low entropy regime, using $t=$ poly$(n)$ blocks, our condenser can achieve output entropy rate $0.9$ even if each block has just $1$ bit of min-entropy. Moreover, these condensers have exponentially small error. Finally, we provide strong existential and impossibility results. For our existential result, we show that a random function is a seedless condenser (with surprisingly strong parameters) for any small family of sources. As a corollary, we get new existential results for seeded condensers and condensers for CG sources. For our impossibility result, we show the latter result is nearly tight, by giving a simple proof that the output of any condenser for CG sources must inherit the entropy gap of (one block of) its input.

Abstract:We identify a particular mouse, $M^{\text{ld}}$, the minimal ladder mouse, that sits in the mouse order just past $M_n^{\sharp}$ for all $n$, and we show that $\mathbb{R}\cap M^{\text{ld}} = Q_{\omega+1}$, the set of reals that are $\Delta^1_{\omega+1}$ in a countable ordinal. Thus $Q_{\omega+1}$ is a mouse set. This is analogous to the fact that $\mathbb{R}\cap M^{\sharp}_1 = Q_3$ where $M^{\sharp}_1$ is the the sharp for the minimal inner model with a Woodin cardinal, and $Q_3$ is the set of reals that are $\Delta^1_3$ in a countable ordinal. More generally $\mathbb{R}\cap M^{\sharp}_{2n+1} = Q_{2n+3}$. The mouse $M^{\text{ld}}$ and the set $Q_{\omega+1}$ compose the next natural pair to consider in this series of results. Thus we are proving the mouse set theorem just past projective. Some of this is not new. $\mathbb{R}\cap M^{\text{ld}} \subseteq Q_{\omega+1}$ was known in the 1990's. But $Q_{\omega+1} \subseteq M^{\text{ld}}$ was open until Woodin found a proof in 2018. The main goal of this paper is to give Woodin's proof.

On the Existence of Seedless Condensers: Exploring the Terrain

Abstract:We prove several new results for seedless condensers in the context of three related classes of sources: Non-Oblivious Symbol Fixing (NOSF) sources, online NOSF (oNOSF) sources [AORSV, EUROCRYPT'20], and adversarial Chor-Goldreich (aCG) source [DMOZ, STOC'23]. We think of these sources as a sequence of random variables $\mathbf{X}=\mathbf{X}_1,\dots,\mathbf{X}_\ell$ on $\ell$ symbols where at least $g$ out of these $\ell$ symbols are "good" (i.e., have some min-entropy requirement), denoted as a $(g,\ell)$-source, and the remaining "bad" $\ell-g$ symbols may adversarially depend on these $g$ good blocks. The difference between each of these sources is realized by restrictions on the power of the adversary. Prior to our work, the only known seedless condenser upper or lower bound in these settings is due to [DMOZ, STOC'23], where they explicitly construct a seedless condenser for a restricted subset of $(g,\ell)$-aCG sources. We show: 1) oNOSF sources a) When $g\leq\ell/2$, we prove that condensing with error 0.99 above rate $\frac{1}{\lfloor \ell/g \rfloor}$ is impossible. In fact, we show that this is tight. b) For $g> \ell/2$, we show the existence of excellent condensers for uniform oNOSF sources. In addition, we show the existence of similar condensers for oNOSF sources with only logarithmic min-entropy. 2) aCG sources a) We observe that uniform aCG sources are equivalent to uniform oNOSF sources and consequently inherit the same results. b) We show that one cannot condense beyond the min-entropy gap of each block or condense low min-entropy CG sources above rate $1/2$. 3) NOSF sources a) We show that condensing with constant error above rate $\frac{g}{\ell}$ is impossible for uniform NOSF sources for any $g$ and $\ell$, thus ruling out the possibility of any non-trivial condensing. This shows a distinction between NOSF sources and oNOSF sources.

Abstract:Given a bounded sequence $\{X^{n}\}_{n}$ of semimartingales on a time interval $[0,T]$, we find a sequence of convex combinations $\{Y^{n}\}_{n}$ and a limiting semimartingale $Y$ such that $\{Y^{n}\}_{n}$ converges to $Y$ in a $\sigma$-localized modification of the Émery topology. More precisely, $\{Y^{n}\}_{n}$ converges to $Y$ in the Émery topology on an increasing sequence $\{D_{n}\}_{n}$ of predictable sets covering $\Omega\times[0,T]$. We also prove some technical variants of this theorem, including a version where the complement of $\{D_{n}\}_{n}$ forms a disjoint sequence. Applications include a complete characterization of sequences admitting convex combinations converging in the Émery topology, and a supermartingale counterpart of Helly's selection theorem.
