Abstract:The Jacobi-Stirling numbers were discovered as a result of a problem involving the spectral theory of powers of the classical second-order Jacobi differential expression. Specifically, these numbers are the coefficients of integral composite powers of the Jacobi expression in Lagrangian symmetric form. Quite remarkably, they share many properties with the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind which, as shown in LW, are the coefficients of integral powers of the Laguerre differential expression. In this paper, we establish several properties of the Jacobi-Stirling numbers and its companions including combinatorial interpretations thereby extending and supplementing known contributions to the literature of Andrews-Littlejohn, Andrews-Gawronski-Littlejohn, Egge, Gelineau-Zeng, and Mongelli.

Abstract:In this paper we derive many infinite families of explicit exact formulas involving either squares or triangular numbers, two of which generalize Jacobi's 4 and 8 squares identities to 4n^2 or 4n(n+1) squares, respectively, without using cusp forms. In fact, we similarly generalize to infinite families all of Jacobi's explicitly stated degree 2, 4, 6, 8 Lambert series expansions of classical theta functions. In addition, we extend Jacobi's special analysis of 2 squares, 2 triangles, 6 squares, 6 triangles to 12 squares, 12 triangles, 20 squares, 20 triangles, respectively. These results, depending on new expansions for powers of various products of classical theta functions, arise in the setting of Jacobi elliptic functions, associated continued fractions, regular C-fractions, Hankel or Turanian determinants, Fourier series, Lambert series, inclusion/exclusion, Laplace expansion formula for determinants, and Schur functions. The Schur function form of these infinite families of identities are analogous to the eta-function identities of Macdonald. Moreover, the powers 4n(n+1), 2n^2+n, 2n^2-n that appear in Macdonald's work also arise at appropriate places in our analysis. A special case of our general methods yields a proof of the two Kac--Wakimoto conjectured identities involving representing a positive integer by sums of 4n^2 or 4n(n+1) triangular numbers, respectively.

On the numerology of trigonometric polynomials

Abstract:This note is about the observation that the various transition formulas between bases of trigonometric polynomials can be expressed in terms binomial coefficients. More specifically, we write the entries of the Chebyshev matrices $ T$ and $ U$ in terms of binomial coefficients. We remark that the inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ T$ correspond to classical power reduction formulas for trigonometric functions. Therefore the entries of $ T^{-1}$ are expressible in terms of binomial coefficients and powers of two. The inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ U$ appear in power reduction formulas involving the Catalan triangles. We could not spot them in the literature. As a corollary the Catalan triangles are interpreted as inverses of rather natural matrices of binomial coefficients. We explain the matrix inversions in terms of Riordan arrays. We solve the integral $ \int _{0}^{2\pi }\cos^{2m}( x)\sin^{2n}( x) dx$ and deduce a hypergeometric identity from the Fourier expansion of $\cos^{2m}(x)$ and $ \sin^{2n}( x)$. As a corollary we prove that super Catalan numbers are integers. We emphasize that from the point of view of these base changes between the trigonometric polynomials it is more natural to work with $2\cos(x)$ and $2\sin(x)$ instead of $\cos(x)$ and $\sin(x)$, since the transition matrices become invertible over the integers. We do a similar analysis for the spread polynomials. This enables us to make a conjecture of Goh and Wildberger more precise. In this exposition we give a mostly self-contained account of the matter, the prerequisites just being four semesters of calculus, linear algebra, elementary complex variables and the residue theorem.

Explicit formulae for generalized Stirling and Eulerian numbers

Abstract:In this article we generalize the $q$-difference operator due to Carlitz in order to derive explicit sum formulae for several extensions of Stirling numbers of the second kind, including complete homogeneous symmetric functions, complementary symmetric functions, $r$-Whitney numbers and elliptic analogues of rook, Stirling and Lah numbers. Furthermore, we generalize Carlitz' $q$-Eulerian numbers to a Lagrange polynomial extension. We define them by generalizing Worpitzky's identity appropriately, and derive a recursion and an explicit sum formulae. Special cases include $r$-Whitney Eulerian numbers and elliptic Eulerian numbers.

Abstract:In this {\it case study}, we hope to show why Sheldon Axler was not just wrong, but {\em wrong}, when he urged, in 1995: ``Down with Determinants!''. We first recall how determinants are useful in enumerative combinatorics, and then illustrate three versatile tools (Dodgson's condensation, the holonomic ansatz and constant term evaluations) to operate in tandem to prove a certain intriguing determinantal formula conjectured by the first author. We conclude with a postscript describing yet another, much more efficient, method for evaluating determinants: `ask determinant-guru, Christian Krattenthaler', but advise people only to use it as a last resort, since if we would have used this last method right away, we would not have had the fun of doing it all by ourselves.

Abstract:The Legendre-Stirling numbers of the second kind were introduced by Everitt et al. in the spectral theory of powers of the Legendre differential expressions. As a continuation of the work of Andrews and Littlejohn (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., 137 (2009), 2581-2590), we provide a combinatorial code for Legendre-Stirling set partitions. As an application, we obtain expansions of the Legendre-Stirling numbers of both kinds in terms of binomial coefficients.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a generalization of the Stirling numbers of the first kind (classical and analogues versions) related to an extension of elementary symmetric function. These numbers appear as the coefficients of in the expression . The array formed by these coefficients can be seen as a natural generalization of the first Stirling triangle. We also give a combinatorial interpretation of the classical numbers in terms of s -tuples of permutations of [ n ] with k cycles and using the inversion and co-inversion statistics on the cycles in the case of the analogues numbers, which also allows us to establish as a particular case the analogues of the Stirling numbers of the first kind. In addition, using the Legendre–Stirling numbers and the Stirling numbers of the first kind new formulas and useful properties are proposed.

Abstract:Recently, the Cauchy-Carlitz number was defined as the counterpart of the Bernoulli-Carlitz number. Both numbers can be expressed explicitly in terms of so-called Stirling-Carlitz numbers. In this paper, we study the second analogue of Stirling-Carlitz numbers and give some general formulae, including Bernoulli and Cauchy numbers in formal power series with complex coefficients, and Bernoulli-Carlitz and Cauchy-Carlitz numbers in function fields. We also give some applications of Hasse-Teichmüller derivative to hypergeometric Bernoulli and Cauchy numbers in terms of associated Stirling numbers.

Abstract:The principal minors of a tridiagonal matrix satisfy two-term and three-term recurrences [1, 2]. Based on these facts, the current article presents a new efficient and reliable hybrid numerical algorithm for evaluating general n-th order tridiagonal determinants in linear time. The hybrid numerical algorithm avoid all symbolic computations. The algorithm is suited for implementation using computer languages such as FORTRAN, PASCAL, ALGOL, MAPLE, MACSYMA and MATHEMATICA. Some illustrative examples are given. Test results indicate the superiority of the hybrid numerical algorithm.

Abstract:In the context of Stirling polynomials, Gessel and Stanley introduced the definition of Stirling permutation, which has attracted extensive attention over the past decades. Recently, we introduced Stirling permutation code and provided numerous equidistribution results as applications. The purpose of the present work is to further analyse Stirling permutation code. First, we derive an expansion formula expressing the joint distribution of the types $A$ and $B$ descent statistics over the hyperoctahedral group, and we also find an interlacing property involving the zeros of its coefficient polynomials. Next, we prove a strong connection between signed permutations in the hyperoctahedral group and Stirling permutations. Furthermore, we investigate unified generalizations of the trivariate second-order Eulerian polynomials and ascent-plateau polynomials. Using Stirling permutation codes, we provide expansion formulas for eight-variable and seventeen-variable polynomials, which imply several $e$-positive expansions and clarify the connections among several statistics. Our results generalize the results of Bóna, Chen-Fu, Dumont, Janson, Haglund-Visontai and Petersen.

Abstract:The problem of counting the $\mathbb{F}_q$-valued points of a variety has been well-studied from algebro-geometric, topological, and combinatorial perspectives. We explore a combinatorially flavored version of this problem studied by Anzis et al. (2018), which is similar to work of Kontsevich, Elkies, and Haglund. Anzis et al. considered the question: what is the probability that the determinant of a Jacobi-Trudi matrix vanishes if the variables are chosen uniformly at random from a finite field? They gave a formula for various partitions such as hooks, staircases, and rectangles. We give a formula for partitions whose parts form an arithmetic progression, verifying and generalizing one of their conjectures. More generally, we compute the probability of the determinant vanishing for a class of matrices (``multislant matrices'') made of Toeplitz blocks with certain properties. We furthermore show that the determinant of a skew Jacobi-Trudi matrix is equidistributed across the finite field if the skew partition is a ribbon.

Abstract:In this paper we study some conjectures on determinants with Jacobi symbol entries posed by Z.-W. Sun. For any positive integer n≡3(mod4), we show that(6,1)n=[6,1]n=(3,2)n=[3,2]n=0 and(4,2)n=(8,8)n=(3,3)n=(21,112)n=0 as conjectured by Sun, where(c,d)n=|(i2+cij+dj2n)|1≤i,j≤n−1 and[c,d]n=|(i2+cij+dj2n)|0≤i,j≤n−1 with (⋅n) the Jacobi symbol. We also prove that (10,9)p=0 for any prime p≡5(mod12), and [5,5]p=0 for any prime p≡13,17(mod20), which were also conjectured by Sun. Our proofs involve character sums over finite fields.
Explicit, recurrent, determinantal expressions of the $k$th power of formal power series and applications to the generalized Bernoulli numbers

Abstract:In this work, the authors provide closed forms and recurrence expressions for computing the $k$th power of the formal power series, some of them in terms of a determinant of some matrices. As a consequence, we obtain the reciprocal of the unit of any formal power series. We apply these results to the generalized Bernoulli numbers and Bernoulli numbers, we derive new closed-form expressions and some recursive relations of these famous numbers. In addition, we present several identities in determinant form. Using these results, an elegant generalization of a well known identity of Euler is presented. We also note some connections between the Stirling numbers of the second kind and the generalized Bernoulli numbers.

Computational approach to the Schottky problem

Abstract:We present a computational approach to the classical Schottky problem based on Fay's trisecant identity for genus $g\geq 4$. For a given Riemann matrix $\mathbb{B}\in\mathbb{H}^{g}$, the Fay identity establishes linear dependence of secants in the Kummer variety if and only if the Riemann matrix corresponds to a Jacobian variety as shown by Krichever. The theta functions in terms of which these secants are expressed depend on the Abel maps of four arbitrary points on a Riemann surface. However, there is no concept of an Abel map for general $\mathbb{B} \in \mathbb{H}^{g}$. To establish linear dependence of the secants, four components of the vectors entering the theta functions can be chosen freely. The remaining components are determined by a Newton iteration to minimize the residual of the Fay identity. Krichever's theorem assures that if this residual vanishes within the finite numerical precision for a generic choice of input data, then the Riemann matrix is with this numerical precision the period matrix of a Riemann surface. The algorithm is compared in genus 4 for some examples to the Schottky-Igusa modular form, known to give the Jacobi locus in this case. It is shown that the same residuals are achieved by the Schottky-Igusa form and the approach based on the Fay identity in this case. In genera 5, 6 and 7, we discuss known examples of Riemann matrices and perturbations thereof for which the Fay identity is not satisfied.
