Abstract:We use network theory to study topological features in the hierarchical clustering of dark matter halos. We use public halo catalogs from cosmological N-body simulations and construct tree graphs that connect halos within main halo systems. Our analysis shows these graphs exhibit a power-law degree distribution with an exponent of $-2$, and possess scale-free and self-similar properties according to the criteria of graph metrics. We propose a random graph model with preferential attachment kernels, which effectively incorporate the effects of minor mergers, major mergers, and tidal stripping. The model reproduces the structural, topological properties of simulated halo systems, providing a new way of modeling complex gravitational dynamics of structure formation.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily focuses on the hierarchical clustering of dark matter halos and explores the topological features of these dark matter structures using graph theory. Specifically, the authors construct a tree graph model to describe the connections between dark matter halos and analyze data obtained from cosmological N-body simulations. ### Main Contributions 1. **Construction of the Graph Model**: - The authors used public dark matter halo catalogs from the FIRE2 and IllustrisTNG projects to construct a tree graph model, where each node represents a dark matter halo and edges represent the associations between subhalos and main halos. - These graphs exhibit power-law degree distribution characteristics with an exponent of approximately -2, indicating that these graphs are scale-free and self-similar. 2. **Development of a Random Graph Model**: - A random graph model based on a preferential attachment mechanism was proposed, effectively simulating secondary mergers, major mergers, and tidal stripping effects during the formation of dark matter structures. - This model successfully replicates the structural and topological characteristics of simulated dark matter systems. 3. **Analysis of Graph Properties**: - The paper further demonstrates that the constructed graph model meets the criteria for scale-freeness and self-similarity. - Through spectral analysis of the graphs (including adjacency matrices and normalized Laplacian matrices), the validity and accuracy of the model were verified. ### Problems Addressed The paper aims to address the following key issues: - **Modeling Hierarchical Clustering**: How to effectively use graph theory methods to describe and understand the hierarchical clustering process of dark matter halos. - **Simulating Complex Dynamics**: How to establish a random graph model to accurately simulate the complex dynamic behaviors during the formation of dark matter structures. - **Quantifying Topological Features**: How to quantitatively assess whether the graph model of dark matter structure formation exhibits scale-freeness and self-similarity. Through the above research, the authors not only provide a new method for analyzing the formation of dark matter structures but also offer powerful tools for understanding and simulating the large-scale structure of the universe.
