Abstract:We recall the notion of abstract bornology, and connect it with topological spaces and size functions. As a generalization of measures of non-compactness, we show how every size function can be mapped to a maxitive measure.

Abstract:We review and compare five ways of assigning totally ordered sizes to subsets of the natural numbers: cardinality, infinite lottery logic with mirror cardinalities, natural density, generalised density, and $\alpha$-numerosity. Generalised densities and $\alpha$-numerosities lack uniqueness, which can be traced to intangibles: objects that can be proven to exist in ZFC while no explicit example of them can be given. As a sixth and final formalism, we consider a recent proposal by \citet{Trlifajova:2024}, which we call c-numerosity. It is fully constructive and uniquely determined, but assigns merely partially ordered numerosity values. By relating all six formalisms to each other in terms of the underlying limit operations, we get a better sense of the intrinsic limitations in determining the sizes of subsets of $\mathbb{N}$.

Abstract:In this work we introduce the concept of bornology on the theory of Frölicher spaces. A canonical bornology, called the functional bornology, is induced from structure functions, and bounded maps under this bornology are determined. Based on the structure of structure curves, we deduce that we cannot induce, canonically, a bornology from structure curves. For each of Frölicher subspace and product, an initial and functional bornology are induced and compared. Similarly, for each of Frölicher quotient and coproduct, a final and functional bornology are induced and compared.

Abstract:This article is a continuation of the study of bornological open covers and related selection principles in metric spaces done in (Chandra et al. 2020) using the idea of strong uniform convergence (Beer and Levi, 2009) on bornology. Here we explore further ramifications, presenting characterizations of various selection principles related to certain classes of bornological covers using the Ramseyan partition relations, interactive results between the cardinalities of bornological bases and certain selection principles involving bornological covers, producing new observations on the $\mathfrak{B}^s$-Hurewicz property introduced in (Chandra et al. 2020) and several results on the $\mathfrak{B}^s$-Gerlits-Nagy property of $X$ which is introduced here following the seminal work of (Gerlits and Nagy, 1982). In addition, in the finite power $X^n$ with the product bornology $\mathfrak{B}^n$, the ${\mathfrak{B}^n}^s$-Hurewicz property as well as the ${\mathfrak{B}^n}^s$-Gerlits-Nagy property of $X^n$ are characterized in terms of properties of $(C(X),\tau^s_\mathfrak{B})$ like countable fan tightness, countable strong fan tightness along with the Reznichenko's property.

Abstract:The paper introduces the notion of the size of countable sets that preserves the Part-Whole Principle and generalizes the notion of the cardinality of finite sets. The sizes of natural numbers, integers, rational numbers, and all their subsets, unions, and Cartesian products are algorithmically enumerable up to one element as sequences of natural numbers. The method is similar to that of Theory of Numerosities of Benci and Di Nasso 2019) but in comparison, it is motivated by Bolzano's concept of infinite series from his Paradoxes of the Infinite, it is constructive because it does not use ultrafilters, and set sizes are uniquely determined. The results mostly agree with those of Theory of Numerosities, but some differ, such as the size of rational numbers. However, set sizes are just partially and not linearly ordered. \emph{Quid pro quo.}

Abstract:For a metric space $(X,d)$, Beer, Naimpally, and Rodriguez-Lopez in ([17]) proposed a unified approach to explore set convergences via uniform convergence of distance functionals on members of an arbitrary family $\mathcal{S}$ of subsets of $X$. The associated topology on the collection $CL(X)$ of all nonempty closed subsets of $(X,d)$ is denoted by $\tau_{\mathcal{S},d}$. As special cases, this unified approach includes classical Wijsman, Attouch-Wets, and Hausdorff distance topologies. In this article, we investigate various topological characteristics of the hyperspace $(CL(X), \tau_{\mathcal{S},d})$ when $\mathcal{S}$ is a bornology on $(X,d)$. In order to do this, a new class of bornologies and a new metric topology on $CL(X)$ have been introduced and studied.

On minimal presentations of numerical monoids

Abstract:We consider the classical problem of determining the largest possible cardinality of a minimal presentation of a numerical monoid with given embedding dimension and multiplicity. Very few values of this cardinality are known. In addressing this problem, we apply tools from Hilbert functions and free resolutions of artinian standard graded algebras. This approach allows us to solve the problem in many cases and, at the same time, identify subtle difficulties in the remaining cases. As a by-product of our analysis, we deduce results for the corresponding problem for the type of a numerical monoid.

Abstract:The majorizing measure theorem of Fernique and Talagrand is a fundamental result in the theory of random processes. It relates the boundedness of random processes indexed by elements of a metric space to complexity measures arising from certain multiscale combinatorial structures, such as packing and covering trees. This paper builds on the ideas first outlined in a little-noticed preprint of Andreas Maurer to present an information-theoretic perspective on the majorizing measure theorem, according to which the boundedness of random processes is phrased in terms of the existence of efficient variable-length codes for the elements of the indexing metric space.

Big in Reverse Mathematics: measure and category

Abstract:The smooth development of large parts of mathematics hinges on the idea that some sets are `small' or `negligible' and can therefore be ignored for a given purpose. The perhaps most famous smallness notion, namely `measure zero', originated with Lebesgue, while a second smallness notion, namely `meagre' or `first category', originated with Baire around the same time. The associated Baire category theorem is a central result governing the properties of meagre (and related) sets, while the same holds for Tao's pigeonhole principle for measure spaes and measure zero sets. In this paper, we study these theorems in Kohlenbach's higher-order Reverse Mathematics, identifying a considerable number of equivalent theorems. The latter involve most basic properties of semi-continuous and pointwise discontinuous functions, Blumberg's theorem, Riemann integration, and Volterra's early work circa 1881. All the aforementioned theorems fall (far) outside of the Big Five of Reverse Mathematics, and we investigate natural restrictions like Baire 1 and quasi-continuity that make these theorems provable again in the Big Five (or similar). Finally, despite the fundamental differences between measure and category, the proofs of our equivalences turn out to be similar.

Abstract:This article includes a survey of the historical development and theoretical structure of the pre-modern theory of magnitudes and numbers. In Part 1, work, insights and controversies related to quantity calculus from Euler onward are reviewed. In Parts 2 and 3, we define scalable monoids and, as a special case, quantity spaces; both can be regarded as universal algebras. Scalable monoids are related to rings and modules, and quantity spaces are to scalable monoids as vector spaces are to modules. Subalgebras and homomorphic images of scalable monoids can be formed, and tensor products of scalable monoids can be constructed as well. We also define and investigate congruence relations on scalable monoids, unit elements of scalable monoids, basis-like substructures of scalable monoids and quantity spaces, and scalar representations of elements of quantity spaces. The mathematical theory of quantity spaces is presented with a view to metrological applications. This article supersedes <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1503.00564" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1503.00564">arXiv:1503.00564</a> and complements <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1408.5024" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1408.5024">arXiv:1408.5024</a>.

Odometers in non-compact spaces

Abstract:We define an odometer in the Baire space. That is the non-compact space of one sided sequences of natural numbers. We go on to prove that it is topologically conjugated to the dyadic odometer restricted to an appropriate non-compact subset of the space of one sided sequences on two symbols. We extend the action of the odometer to finite words. It turns out that, arranging the finite words in appropriate binary tree, this extension runs through the tree from left-right and top-down. Several well known binary trees made out of rational numbers, such as the Kepler tree or the Calkin and Wilf tree, are recovered in this way. Indeed, it suffices to identify finite words with rational numbers by means of certain continued fractions. The odometric action allow us to recover, in a unified way, several counting results for the rational numbers. Moreover, associated to certain interval maps with countably many branches we construct their corresponding odometers. Explicit formulas are provided in the cases of the Gauss map (continued fractions) and the Renyi map (backward continued fractions).

Abstract:In ancient Greek mathematics, magnitudes such as lengths were strictly distinguished from numbers. In modern quantity calculus, a distinction is made between quantities and scalars that serve as measures of quantities. It can be argued that quantities should play a more prominent, independent role in modern mathematics, as magnitudes earlier. The introduction includes a sketch of the development and structure of the pre-modern theory of magnitudes and numbers. Then, a scalable monoid over a ring is defined and its basic properties are described. Congruence relations on scalable monoids, direct and tensor products of scalable monoids, subalgebras and homomorphic images of scalable monoids, and unit elements of scalable monoids are also defined and analyzed. A quantity space is defined as a commutative scalable monoid over a field, admitting a finite basis similar to a basis for a free abelian group. The mathematical theory of quantity spaces forms the basis of a rigorous quantity calculus and is developed with a view to applications in metrology and foundations of physics.

Abstract:Let $\lambda$ be an uncountable cardinal such that $2^{< \lambda } = \lambda$. Working in the setup of generalized descriptive set theory, we study the structure of $\lambda^+$-Borel measurable functions with respect to various kinds of limits, and isolate a suitable notion of $\lambda$-Baire class $\xi$ function. Among other results, we provide higher analogues of two classical theorems of Lebesgue, Hausdorff, and Banach, namely: (1) A function is $\lambda^+$-Borel measurable if and only if it can be obtained from continuous functions by iteratively applying pointwise $D$-limits, where $D$ varies among directed sets of size at most $\lambda$. (2) A function is of $\lambda$-Baire class $\xi$ if and only if it is $\boldsymbol{\Sigma}^{0}_{\xi+1}$-measurable.

Abstract:We revisit the topic of probability measures on CAT(0) cube complexes and prove that an amenable group acting on a CAT(0) cube complex, regardless of dimension, necessarily preserves an interval in the Roller compactification. In the finite dimensional case, we prove that there must be an orbit of cardinality $2^N$, where $N$ is bounded by the dimension. This is a slight extension of the author's previous Tits' Alternative.

Abstract:Let $\kappa$ be a regular cardinal, $\lambda<\kappa$ be a smaller infinite cardinal, and $\mathsf K$ be a $\kappa$-accessible category where colimits of $\lambda$-indexed chains exist. We show that various category-theoretic constructions applied to $\mathsf K$, such as the inserter and the equifier, produce $\kappa$-accessible categories $\mathsf E$ again, and the most obvious expected description of the full subcategory of $\kappa$-presentable objects in $\mathsf E$ in terms of $\kappa$-presentable objects in $\mathsf K$ holds true. In particular, if $\mathsf C$ is a $\kappa$-small category, then the category of functors $\mathsf C\rightarrow\mathsf K$ is $\kappa$-accessible, and its $\kappa$-presentable objects are precisely all the functors from $\mathsf C$ to the $\kappa$-presentable objects of $\mathsf K$. We proceed to discuss the preservation of $\kappa$-accessibility by conical pseudolimits, lax and oplax limits, and weighted pseudolimits. The results of this paper go back to an unpublished 1977 preprint of Ulmer. Our motivation comes from the theory of flat modules and flat quasi-coherent sheaves.

Abstract:A maxitive measure is the analogue of a finitely additive measure or charge, in which the usual addition is replaced by the supremum operation. In contrast to charges, maxitive measures often have a density. We show that maxitive measures can be decomposed as the supremum of a maxitive measure with density, and a residual maxitive measure that is null on compact sets under specific conditions.

Abstract:The genus of a fibration was introduced by Schwarz in 1962. Given a continuous map $g:A\to B$, the usual sectional number $\text{sec}_u(g)$ is the least integer~$m$ such that $B$ can be covered by $m$ open subsets, each of which admits a local section of~$g$. Likewise, the sectional category $\text{secat}(g)$ is the least integer~$m$ such that $B$ can be covered by $m$ open subsets, each of which admits a local homotopy section of~$g$. In the case that $g$ is a fibration, the usual sectional number and the sectional category of $g$ coincide with the Schwarz's genus of $g$. In this paper, we introduce a notion of sectional number for a morphism in a category with covers, which extends the usual sectional number and sectional category (and, of course, Schwarz's notion). We study the invariance property, the behaviour under weak pullbacks and continuous functors, and present upper bounds in terms of a notion of LS category and projective covering number for an object. In addition, we introduce a notion of multiplicative cohomology theory on a category with covers, and we use it to present a cohomological lower bound for the sectional number. Several examples of this invariant are presented to support this theory. For instance, our sectional number yields a family of new numerical invariants in Top; we also express the twin prime conjecture and Goldbach's conjecture in terms of sectional numbers in the category of sets. Our unified concept is relevant in this new setting because it provides a foundation for sectional theory in category theory and builds bridges between new areas in mathematics.

Abstract:We deal with topological spaces homeomorphic to their respective squares. Primarily, we investigate the existence of large families of such spaces in some subclasses of compact metrizable spaces. As our main result we show that there is a family of size continuum of pairwise non-homeomorphic compact metrizable zero-dimensional spaces homeomorphic to their respective squares. This answers a question of W. J. Charatonik. We also discuss the situation in the classes of continua, Peano continua and absolute retracts.
