Abstract:We define notions of regularity and (Barr-)exactness for 2-categories. In fact, we define three notions of regularity and exactness, each based on one of the three canonical ways of factorising a functor in Cat: as (surjective on objects, injective on objects and fully faithful), as (bijective on objects, fully faithful), and as (bijective on objects and full, faithful). The correctness of our notions is justified using the theory of lex colimits introduced by Lack and the second author. Along the way, we develop an abstract theory of regularity and exactness relative to a kernel--quotient factorisation, extending earlier work of Street and others.

The Glueing Construction and Double Categories

Abstract:We introduce Artin-Wraith glueing and locally closed inclusions in double categories. Examples include locales, toposes, topological spaces, categories, and posets. With appropriate assumptions, we show that locally closed inclusions are exponentiable, and the exponentials are constructed via Artin-Wraith glueing. Thus, we obtain a single theorem establishing the exponentiability of locally closed inclusions in these five cases.

Abstract:We study exponentiable functors in the context of synthetic $\infty$-categories. We do this within the framework of simplicial Homotopy Type Theory of Riehl and Shulman. Our main result characterizes exponentiable functors. In order to achieve this, we explore Segal type completions. Moreover, we verify that our result is semantically sound.

Double categorical model of $(\infty,1)$-categories

Abstract:Building on work by Fiore-Pronk-Paoli, we construct four model structures on the category of double categories, each modeling one of the following: simplicial spaces, Segal spaces, $(\infty,1)$-categories, and $\infty$-groupoids. Additionally, we provide an explicit formula for computing homotopy colimits in these models using the Grothendieck construction. We expect the model of double categories for $(\infty,1)$-categories to play a similar role than that of the model of categories for spaces or $\infty$-groupoids in Grothendieck's study of the homotopy theory of spaces.

Abstract:Expansion of the categorical point of view on many areas of the mathematics and mathematical physics will cause to deeper understanding of genuine features of these problems. New applications of categorical methods are connected with new additional structures on categories. One of such structures, the double category, is considered in this article. The double category structure is defined as generalization of the bicategory structure. It is shown that double categories exist in the topological and ordinary quantum field theories, and for dynamical systems with inputs and outputs. Morphisms of all these double categories are not maps of sets.

Abstract:Products in double categories, as found in cartesian double categories, are an elegant concept with numerous applications, yet also have a few puzzling aspects. In this paper, we revisit double-categorical products from an unbiased perspective, following up an original idea by Paré to employ a double-categorical analogue of the family construction, or free product completion. Defined in this way, double categories with finite products are strictly more expressive than cartesian double categories, while being governed by a single universal property that is no more difficult to work with. We develop the basic theory and examples of such products and, by duality, of coproducts in double categories. As an application, we introduce finite-product double theories, a categorification of finite-product theories that extends recent work by Lambert and the author on cartesian double theories, and we construct the virtual double category of models of a finite-product double theory.

Abstract:Category theory is a branch of mathematics that provides a formal framework for understanding the relationship between mathematical structures. To this end, a category not only incorporates the data of the desired objects, but also "morphisms", which capture how different objects interact with each other. Category theory has found many applications in mathematics and in computer science, for example in functional programming. Double categories are a natural generalization of categories which incorporate the data of two separate classes of morphisms, allowing a more nuanced representation of relationships and interactions between objects. Similar to category theory, double categories have been successfully applied to various situations in mathematics and computer science, in which objects naturally exhibit two types of morphisms. Examples include categories themselves, but also lenses, petri nets, and spans. While categories have already been formalized in a variety of proof assistants, double categories have received far less attention. In this paper we remedy this situation by presenting a formalization of double categories via the proof assistant Coq, relying on the Coq UniMath library. As part of this work we present two equivalent formalizations of the definition of a double category, an unfolded explicit definition and a second definition which exhibits excellent formal properties via 2-sided displayed categories. As an application of the formal approach we establish a notion of univalent double category along with a univalence principle: equivalences of univalent double categories coincide with their identities

Transposing cartesian and other structure in double categories

Abstract:The cartesian structure possessed by relations, spans, profunctors, and other such morphisms is elegantly expressed by universal properties in double categories. Though cartesian double categories were inspired in part by the older program of cartesian bicategories, the precise relationship between the double-categorical and bicategorical approaches has so far remained mysterious, except in special cases. We provide a formal connection by showing that every double category with iso-strong finite products, and in particular every cartesian equipment, has an underlying cartesian bicategory. To do so, we develop broadly applicable techniques for transposing natural transformations and adjunctions between double categories, extending a line of previous work rooted in the concepts of companions and conjoints.

Abstract:We show that factorization systems, both strict and orthogonal, can be equivalently described as double categories satisfying certain properties. This provides conceptual reasons for why the category of sets and partial maps or the category of small categories and cofunctors admit orthogonal factorization systems. The theory also gives an explicit description of various lax morphism classifiers and explains why they admit strict factorization systems.

Abstract:A (closed) dynamical system is a notion of how things can be, together with a notion of how they may change given how they are. The idea and mathematics of closed dynamical systems has proven incredibly useful in those sciences that can isolate their object of study from its environment. But many changing situations in the world cannot be meaningfully isolated from their environment - a cell will die if it is removed from everything beyond its walls. To study systems that interact with their environment, and to design such systems in a modular way, we need a robust theory of open dynamical systems. In this extended abstract, we put forward a general definition of open dynamical system. We define two general sorts of morphisms between these systems: covariant morphisms which include trajectories, steady states, and periodic orbits; and contravariant morphisms which allow for plugging variables of some systems into parameters of other systems. We define an indexed double category of open dynamical systems indexed by their interface and use a double Grothendieck construction to construct a double category of open dynamical systems. In our main theorem, we construct covariantly representable indexed double functors from the indexed double category of dynamical systems to an indexed double category of spans. This shows that all covariantly representable structures of dynamical systems - including trajectories, steady states, and periodic orbits - compose according to the laws of matrix arithmetic.

Double Glueing over Free Exponential: with Measure Theoretic Applications

Abstract:This paper provides a compact method to lift the free exponential construction of Mellies-Tabareau-Tasson over the Hyland-Schalk double glueing for orthogonality categories. A condition ``reciprocity of orthogonality'' is presented simply enough to lift the free exponential over the double glueing in terms of the orthogonality. Our general method applies to the monoidal category TsK of the s-finite transition kernels with countable biproducts. We show (i) TsK^op has the free exponential, which is shown to be describable in terms of measure theory. (ii) The s-finite transition kernels have an orthogonality between measures and measurable functions in terms of Lebesgue integrals. The orthogonality is reciprocal, hence the free exponential of (i) lifts to the orthogonality category O_I(TsK^op), which subsumes Ehrhard et al's probabilistic coherent spaces as the full subcategory of countable measurable spaces. To lift the free exponential, the measure-theoretic uniform convergence theorem commuting Lebesgue integral and limit plays a crucial role as well as Fubini-Tonelli theorem for double integral in s-finiteness. Our measure-theoretic orthogonality is considered as a continuous version of the orthogonality of the probabilistic coherent spaces for linear logic, and in particular provides a two layered decomposition of Crubille et al's direct free exponential for these spaces.

Model Structures on the Category of Small Double Categories

Abstract:In this paper we obtain several model structures on {\bf DblCat}, the category of small double categories. Our model structures have three sources. We first transfer across a categorification-nerve adjunction. Secondly, we view double categories as internal categories in {\bf Cat} and take as our weak equivalences various internal equivalences defined via Grothendieck topologies. Thirdly, {\bf DblCat} inherits a model structure as a category of algebras over a 2-monad. Some of these model structures coincide and the different points of view give us further results about cofibrant replacements and cofibrant objects. As part of this program we give explicit descriptions and discuss properties of free double categories, quotient double categories, colimits of double categories, several nerves, and horizontal categorification.

On functor double $\infty$-categories

Abstract:In this paper, we study double $\infty$-categories of double functors. To this end, we exhibit the cartesian closed structure of the $\infty$-category of double $\infty$-categories and various localizations. We prove a theorem that characterizes the companions and conjoints in functor double $\infty$-categories via the notion of companionable and conjointable 2-cells in double $\infty$-categories. Moreover, we show that under suitable conditions, functor double $\infty$-categories are horizontally closed. Throughout the paper, we highlight a few applications to $(\infty,2)$-category theory and indexed exponentiability.

Cartesian double theories: A double-categorical framework for categorical doctrines

Abstract:The categorified theories known as "doctrines" specify a category equipped with extra structure, analogous to how ordinary theories specify a set with extra structure. We introduce a new framework for doctrines based on double category theory. A cartesian double theory is defined to be a small double category with finite products and a model of a cartesian double theory to be a finite product-preserving lax functor out of it. Many familiar categorical structures are models of cartesian double theories, including categories, presheaves, monoidal categories, braided and symmetric monoidal categories, 2-groups, multicategories, and cartesian and cocartesian categories. We show that every cartesian double theory has a unital virtual double category of models, with lax maps between models given by cartesian lax natural transformations, bimodules between models given by cartesian modules, and multicells given by multimodulations. In many cases, the virtual double category of models is representable, hence is a genuine double category. Moreover, when restricted to pseudo maps, every cartesian double theory has a virtual equipment of models, hence an equipment of models in the representable case. Compared with 2-monads, double theories have the advantage of being straightforwardly presentable by generators and relations, as we illustrate through a large number of examples.

Abstract:We study (vertically) normal lax double functors valued in the weak double category $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{at}$ of small categories, functors, profunctors and natural transformations, which we refer to as lax double presheaves. We show that for the theory of double categories they play a similar role as 2-functors valued in $\mathrm{Cat}$ for 2-categories. We first introduce representable lax double presheaves and establish a Yoneda lemma. Then we build a Grothendieck construction which gives a 2-equivalence between lax double presheaves and discrete double fibrations over a fixed double category. Finally, we prove a representation theorem showing that a lax double presheaf is represented by an object if and only if its Grothendieck construction has a double terminal object.

Abstract:We consider a possible framework to categorify the exponential map exp⁡(−f) given the categorification of a generator f of sl2 by Lauda. In this setup the Taylor expansions of exp⁡(−f) and exp⁡(f) turn into complexes built out of categorified divided powers of f. Hom spaces between tensor powers of categorified f are given by diagrammatics combining nilHecke algebra relations with those for a additional “short strand” generator. The proposed framework is only an approximation to categorification of exponentiation, because the functors categorifying exp⁡(f) and exp⁡(−f) are not invertible.

Abstract:We define duality triples and duality pairs in compactly generated triangulated categories and investigate their properties. This enables us to give an elementary way to determine whether a class is closed under pure subobjects, pure quotients and pure extensions, as well as providing a way to show the existence of approximations. One key ingredient is a new characterisation of phantom maps. We then introduce an axiomatic form of Auslander-Gruson-Jensen duality, from which we define dual definable categories, and show that these coincide with symmetric coproduct closed duality pairs. This framework is ubiquitous, encompassing both algebraic triangulated categories and stable homotopy theories. Accordingly, we provide many applications in both settings, with a particular emphasis on silting theory and stratified tensor-triangulated categories.
