Abstract:We provide a new approach to categorical graph and hypergraph theory by using categorical syntax and semantics. For each monoid $M$ and action on a set $X$, there is an associated presheaf topos of $(X,M)$-graphs where each object can be interpreted as a generalized uniform hypergraph where each edge has cardinality $\#X$ incident vertices (including multiplicity) and where the monoid informs what type of cohesivity the edges possess. One distinguishing feature of $(X,M)$-graphs is the presence of unfixed edges. We prove that unfixed edges are a necessary feature of a category of graphs or uniform hypergraphs if one wants exponentials and effective equivalence relations to exist in the category. The main advantage of separating syntax (the $(X,M)$-graph theories) from semantics (the categories of $(X,M)$-graphs) is the ability to interpret the theory in any cocomplete category. This interpetation functor then yields a nerve-realization adjunction and allows us to transfer structure between the category of $(X,M)$-graphs and the receptive cocomplete category.

Existential Closure in Uniform Hypergraphs

Abstract:For a positive integer $n$, a graph with at least $n$ vertices is $n$-existentially closed or simply $n$-e.c. if for any set of vertices $S$ of size $n$ and any set $T\subseteq S$, there is a vertex $x\not\in S$ adjacent to each vertex of $T$ and no vertex of $S\setminus T$. We extend this concept to uniform hypergraphs, find necessary conditions for $n$-e.c. hypergraphs to exist, and prove that random uniform hypergraphs are asymptotically $n$-existentially closed. We then provide constructions to generate infinitely many examples of $n$-e.c. hypergraphs. In particular, these constructions use certain combinatorial designs as ingredients, adding to the ever-growing list of applications of designs.

Abstract:We study the Deligne interpolation categories for , first introduced by F. Knop. These categories interpolate the categories of finite-dimensional complex representations of the finite general linear group . We describe the morphism spaces in this category via generators and relations. We show that the generating object of this category (an analogue of the representation of ) carries the structure of a Frobenius algebra with a compatible -linear structure; we call such objects -linear Frobenius spaces and show that is the universal symmetric monoidal category generated by such an -linear Frobenius space of categorical dimension t . In the second part of the paper, we prove a similar universal property for a category of representations of .

Gorenstein Projective Objects in Abelian Categories

Abstract:Let A be an abelian category with enough projective objects and let X be a full subcategory of A. We define Gorenstein projective objects with respect to X and YX , respectively, where YX={Y ∈ Ch(A)|Y is acyclic and ZnY ∈ X}. We point out that under certain hypotheses, these two Gorensein projective objects are related in a nice way. In particular, if P(A) ⊆ X , we show that X ∈ Ch(A) is Gorenstein projective with respect to YX if and only if X is Gorenstein projective with respect to X for each i, when X is a self-orthogonal class or X is Hom(−,X )-exact. Subsequently, we consider the relationships of Gorenstein projective dimensions between them. As an application, if A is of finite left Gorenstein projective global dimension with respect to X and contains an injective cogenerator, then we find a new model structure on Ch(A) by Hovey’s results in [14].

Abstract:We generalize the concept of a norm on a vector space to one of a norm on a category. This provides a unified perspective on many specific matters in many different areas of mathematics like set theory, functional analysis, measure theory, topology, and metric space theory. We will especially address the two last areas in which the monotone-light factorization and, respectively, the Gromov-Hausdorff distance will naturally appear. In our formalization a Schröder-Bernstein property becomes an axiom of a norm which constitutes interesting properties of the categories in question. The proposed concept provides a convenient framework for metrizations.

Abstract:We introduce Artin-Wraith glueing and locally closed inclusions in double categories. Examples include locales, toposes, topological spaces, categories, and posets. With appropriate assumptions, we show that locally closed inclusions are exponentiable, and the exponentials are constructed via Artin-Wraith glueing. Thus, we obtain a single theorem establishing the exponentiability of locally closed inclusions in these five cases.

The homotopy cardinality of the representation category for a Legendrian knot

Abstract:Given a Legendrian knot in $(\mathbb{R}^3, \ker(dz-ydx))$ one can assign a combinatorial invariants called ruling polynomials. These invariants have been shown to recover not only a (normalized) count of augmentations but are also closely related to a categorical count of augmentations in the form of the homotopy cardinality of the augmentation category. In this article, we prove that that the homotopy cardinality of the $n$-dimensional representation category is a multiple of the $n$-colored ruling polynomial. Along the way, we establish that two $n$-dimensional representations are equivalent in the representation category if they are conjugate DGA homotopic. We also provide some applications to Lagrangian concordance.

Abstract:We consider a possible framework to categorify the exponential map exp⁡(−f) given the categorification of a generator f of sl2 by Lauda. In this setup the Taylor expansions of exp⁡(−f) and exp⁡(f) turn into complexes built out of categorified divided powers of f. Hom spaces between tensor powers of categorified f are given by diagrammatics combining nilHecke algebra relations with those for a additional “short strand” generator. The proposed framework is only an approximation to categorification of exponentiation, because the functors categorifying exp⁡(f) and exp⁡(−f) are not invertible.

Abstract:Herein we develop category-theoretic tools for understanding network-style diagrammatic languages. The archetypal network-style diagrammatic language is that of electric circuits; other examples include signal flow graphs, Markov processes, automata, Petri nets, chemical reaction networks, and so on. The key feature is that the language is comprised of a number of components with multiple (input/output) terminals, each possibly labelled with some type, that may then be connected together along these terminals to form a larger network. The components form hyperedges between labelled vertices, and so a diagram in this language forms a hypergraph. We formalise the compositional structure by introducing the notion of a hypergraph category. Network-style diagrammatic languages and their semantics thus form hypergraph categories, and semantic interpretation gives a hypergraph functor. The first part of this thesis develops the theory of hypergraph categories. In particular, we introduce the tools of decorated cospans and corelations. Decorated cospans allow straightforward construction of hypergraph categories from diagrammatic languages: the inputs, outputs, and their composition are modelled by the cospans, while the 'decorations' specify the components themselves. Not all hypergraph categories can be constructed, however, through decorated cospans. Decorated corelations are a more powerful version that permits construction of all hypergraph categories and hypergraph functors. These are often useful for constructing the semantic categories of diagrammatic languages and functors from diagrams to the semantics. To illustrate these principles, the second part of this thesis details applications to linear time-invariant dynamical systems and passive linear networks.

Chains of model structures arising from modules of finite Gorenstein dimension

Abstract:For any integer $n\ge 0$ and any ring $R$, \ $(\mathcal {PGF}_n, \ \mathcal P_n^\perp \cap \mathcal {PGF}^{\perp})$ proves to be a complete hereditary cotorsion pair in $R$-Mod, where $\mathcal {PGF}$ is the class of PGF modules, introduced by J. Šaroch and J. Štovíček, and \ $\mathcal {PGF}_n$ is the class of $R$-modules of PGF dimension $\le n$. For any Artin algebra $R$, \ $(\mathcal {GP}_n, \ \mathcal P_n^\perp \cap \mathcal {GP}^{\perp})$ proves to be a complete and hereditary cotorsion pair in $R$-Mod, where $\mathcal {GP}_n$ is the class of modules of Gorenstein projective dimension $\le n$. These cotorsion pairs induce two chains of hereditary Hovey triples \ $(\mathcal {PGF}_n, \ \mathcal P_n^\perp, \ \mathcal {PGF}^{\perp})$ and \ $(\mathcal {GP}_n, \ \mathcal P_n^\perp, \ \mathcal {GP}^{\perp})$, and the corresponding homotopy categories in the same chain are the same. It is observed that some complete cotorsion pairs in $R$-Mod can induce complete cotorsion pairs in some special extension closed subcategories of $R$-Mod. Then corresponding results in exact categories $\mathcal {PGF}_n$, \ $\mathcal {GP}_n$, \ $\mathcal {GF}_n$, \ $\mathcal {PGF}^{<\infty}$, \ $\mathcal {GP}^{<\infty}$ and $\mathcal {GF}^{<\infty}$, are also obtained. As a byproduct, $\mathcal{PGF} = \mathcal {GP}$ for a ring $R$ if and only if $\mathcal{PGF}^\perp\cap\mathcal{GP}_n=\mathcal P_n$ for some $n$.

Abstract:We describe a category of Feynman graphs and show how it relates to compact symmetric multicategories (coloured modular operads) just as linear orders relate to categories and rooted trees relate to multicategories. More specifically we obtain the following nerve theorem: compact symmetric multicategories can be characterised as presheaves on the category of Feynman graphs subject to a Segal condition. This text is a write-up of the second-named author's QPL6 talk; a more detailed account of this material will appear elsewhere.

Double Glueing over Free Exponential: with Measure Theoretic Applications

Abstract:This paper provides a compact method to lift the free exponential construction of Mellies-Tabareau-Tasson over the Hyland-Schalk double glueing for orthogonality categories. A condition ``reciprocity of orthogonality'' is presented simply enough to lift the free exponential over the double glueing in terms of the orthogonality. Our general method applies to the monoidal category TsK of the s-finite transition kernels with countable biproducts. We show (i) TsK^op has the free exponential, which is shown to be describable in terms of measure theory. (ii) The s-finite transition kernels have an orthogonality between measures and measurable functions in terms of Lebesgue integrals. The orthogonality is reciprocal, hence the free exponential of (i) lifts to the orthogonality category O_I(TsK^op), which subsumes Ehrhard et al's probabilistic coherent spaces as the full subcategory of countable measurable spaces. To lift the free exponential, the measure-theoretic uniform convergence theorem commuting Lebesgue integral and limit plays a crucial role as well as Fubini-Tonelli theorem for double integral in s-finiteness. Our measure-theoretic orthogonality is considered as a continuous version of the orthogonality of the probabilistic coherent spaces for linear logic, and in particular provides a two layered decomposition of Crubille et al's direct free exponential for these spaces.

On Frobenius-Schur exponent bounds

Abstract:Here we study bounds on the Frobenius-Schur exponent of spherical fusion categories based on their global dimension generalizing bounds from the representation theory of finite-dimensional quasi-Hopf algebras. Our main result is that if the Frobenius-Schur exponent of a modular fusion category is a prime power for some prime integer $p$, then it is bounded by the norm of its global dimension when $p$ is odd, and four times the norm of its global dimension when $p=2$; these bounds are optimal. If one assumes in addition pseudounitarity, the categories achieving the optimal bound are completely described and we attain similar bounds and classifications for arbitrary spherical fusion categories. This proof includes an explicit classification of modular fusion categories of Frobenius-Perron dimension $p^5$; all examples which are not pointed are constructed explicitly from the Ising categories and the representation theory of extraspecial $p$-groups.

Abstract:We define and study a natural category of graph limits. The objects are pairs $(\pi,\mu)$, where $\pi$ (the distribution of vertices) is an abstract probability measure on some abstract measurable space $(X,\mathcal{A})$ and $\mu$ (the distribution of edges) is an abstract finite measure on the square $(X,\mathcal{A})^2$. Morphisms are random maps between the underlying measurable spaces which preserve the distribution of vertices as well as the distribution of edges. We also define a convergence notion (inspired by s-convergence) for sequences of graph limits. We apply tools from category theory to prove the compactness of the space of all graph limits.

Abstract:A graph is cubical if it is a subgraph of a hypercube. For a cubical graph $H$ and a hypercube $Q_n$, $ex(Q_n, H)$ is the largest number of edges in an $H$-free subgraph of $Q_n$. If $ex(Q_n, H)$ is equal to a positive proportion of the number of edges in $Q_n$, $H$ is said to have positive Turán density in a hypercube; otherwise it has zero Turán density. Determining $ex(Q_n, H)$ and even identifying whether $H$ has positive or zero Turán density remains a widely open question for general $H$.

Incidence Hypergraphs: Box Products & the Laplacian

Abstract:The box product and its associated box exponential are characterized for the categories of quivers (directed graphs), multigraphs, set system hypergraphs, and incidence hypergraphs. It is shown that only the quiver case of the box exponential can be characterized via homs entirely within their own category. An asymmetry in the incidence hypergraphic box product is rectified via an incidence dual-closed generalization that effectively treats vertices and edges as real and imaginary parts of a complex number, respectively. This new hypergraphic box product is shown to have a natural interpretation as the canonical box product for graphs via the bipartite representation functor, and its associated box exponential is represented as homs entirely in the category of incidence hypergraphs; with incidences determined by incidence-prism mapping. The evaluation of the box exponential at paths is shown to correspond to the entries in half-powers of the oriented hypergraphic signless Laplacian matrix.

A Polynomial Construction of Nerves for Higher Categories

Abstract:We show that the construction due to Leinster and Weber of a generalized Lawvere theory for a familially representable monad on a (co)presheaf category, and the associated ``nerve'' functor from monad algebras to (co)presheaves, have an elegant categorical description in the double category $\mathbb{C}\mathbf{at}^{\#}$ of categories, cofunctors, familial functors, and transformations. In $\mathbb{C}\mathbf{at}^{\#}$, which also arises from comonoids in the category of polynomial functors, both a familial monad and a (co)presheaf it acts on can be modeled as horizontal morphisms; from this perspective, the theory category associated to the monad is built using left Kan extension in the category of endomorphisms, and the nerve functor is modeled by a single composition of horizontal morphisms in $\mathbb{C}\mathbf{at}^{\#}$. For the free category monad $path$ on graphs, this provides a new construction of the simplex category as $\Delta := \lens{path}{path \circ path}$. We also explore the free Eilenberg-Moore completion of $\mathbb{C}\mathbf{at}^{\#}$, in which constructions such as the free symmetric monoidal category monad on $\mathbf{Cat}$ can modeled using the rich language of polynomial functors.

On the exponential algebraic geometry

Abstract:The set of roots of any finite system of exponential sums in the space $\mathbb{C}^n$ is called an exponential variety. We define the intersection index of varieties of complementary dimensions, and the ring of classes of numerical equivalence of exponential varieties with operations "addition-union" and "multiplication-intersection". This ring is analogous to the ring of conditions of the torus $(\mathbb{C}\setminus 0)^n$ and is called the ring of conditions of $\mathbb{C}^n$. We provide its description in terms of convex geometry. Namely we associate an exponential variety with an element of a certain ring generated by convex polyhedra in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We call this element the Newtonization of the exponential variety. For example, the Newtonization of an exponential hypersurface is its Newton polyhedron. The Newtonization map defines an isomorphism of the ring of conditions to the ring generated by convex polyhedra in $\mathbb{C}^n$. It follows, in particular, that the intersection index of $n$ exponential hypersurfaces is equal to the mixed pseudo-volume of their Newton polyhedra.
