Abstract:Asymptotics are given for the number of rational points in the domain of a morphism of weighted projective stacks whose images have bounded height and satisfy a (possibly infinite) set of local conditions. As a consequence we obtain results for counting elliptic curves over number fields with prescribed level structures, including the cases of $\Gamma(N)$ for $N\in\{1,2,3,4,5\}$, $\Gamma_1(N)$ for $N\in\{1,2,\dots,10,12\}$, and $\Gamma_0(N)$ for $N\in\{1,2,4,6,8,9,12,16,18\}$. In all cases we give an asymptotic with an expression for the leading coefficient, and in many cases we also give a power-saving error term.

Abstract:We give a new proof of a result of DiPippo and Wan for counting points of bounded height on projective spaces over global function fields. The new proof adapts the geometry of numbers arguments used by Schanuel in the number field case.

Abstract:A weighted projective stack is a stacky quotient $\mathscr P(\mathbf a)=(\mathbf A^n-\{0\})/\mathbb G_m$, where the action of $\mathbb G_m$ is with weights $\mathbf a\in\mathbb Z^n_{>0}$. Examples are: the compactified moduli stack of elliptic curves $\mathscr P(4,6)$ and the classifying stack of $\mu_m$-torsors $B\mu_m=\mathscr P(m)$. We define heights on the weighted projective stacks. The heights generalize the naive height of an elliptic curve and the absolute discriminant of a torsor. We use the heights to count rational points. We find the asymptotic behaviour for the number of rational points of bounded heights.

Abstract:We investigate local and global weighted heights a-la Weil for weighted projective spaces via Cartier and Weil divisors and extend the definition of weighted heights on weighted projective spaces from <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1902.06563" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1902.06563">arXiv:1902.06563</a> to weighted varieties and closed subvarieties. We prove that any line bundle on a weighted variety admits a locally bounded weighted $M$-metric. Using this fact, we define local and global weighted heights for weighted varieties in weighted projective spaces and their closed subschemes and show their fundamental properties.

Abstract:An upper bound for the maximum number of rational points on an hypersurface in a projective space over a finite field has been conjectured by Tsfasman and proved by Serre in 1989. The analogue question for hypersurfaces on weighted projective spaces has been considered by Castryck, Ghorpade, Lachaud, O'Sullivan, Ram and the first author in 2017. A conjecture has been proposed there and proved in the particular case of the dimension 2. We prove here the conjecture in any dimension provided the second weight is also equal to one.

Abstract:Inspired by Bourqui's work on anticanonical height zeta functions on Hirzebruch surfaces, we study height zeta functions of split toric varieties with Picard rank 2 over global function fields, with respect to height functions associated with big metrized line bundles. We show that these varieties can be naturally decomposed into a finite disjoint union of subvarieties, where precise analytic properties of the corresponding height zeta functions can be given. As application, we obtain asymptotic formulas for the number of rational points of large height on each subvariety, with explicit leading constants and controlled error terms.

Abstract:We develop a global version of Heath‐Brown's p‐adic determinant method to study the asymptotic behaviour of the number N(W; B) of rational points of height at most B on certain subvarieties W of Pn defined over Q. The most important application is a proof of the dimension growth conjecture of Heath‐Brown and Serre for all integral projective varieties of degree d ≥ 2 over Q. For projective varieties of degree d ≥ 4, we prove a uniform version N(W; B) = Od,n,ε(Bdim W+ε) of this conjecture. We also use our global determinant method to improve upon previous estimates for quasi‐projective surfaces. If, for example, X́ is the complement of the lines on a non‐singular surface X ⊂ P3 of degree d, then we show that N(X́;B)=Od(B3/√d(logB)4+B) . For surfaces defined by forms a0x0d+a1x1d+a2x2d+a3x3d with non‐zero coefficients, then we use a new geometric result for Fermat surfaces to show that N(X́;B)=Od(B3/√d(logB)4) for B ≥ e.

Abstract:We give asymptotics for the number of Drinfeld $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$-modules over $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ of a given height, which satisfy prescribed sets of local conditions. This is done by relating our problem to a problem about counting points on weighted projective spaces. Our results for counting points of bounded height on weighted projective spaces over global function fields may be of independent interest.

Abstract:We are interested in cyclic covers of the projective line which are totally ramified at all of their branch points. We begin with curves given by an equation of the form y n = f ( x ) y^{n}=f(x) , where f f is a polynomial of degree d d . Under a mild hypothesis, it is easy to see that all of the branch points must be Weierstrass points. Our main problem is to find the total Weierstrass weight of these points, B W BW . We obtain a lower bound for B W BW , which we show is exact if n n and d d are relatively prime. As a fraction of the total Weierstrass weight of all points on the curve, we get the following particularly nice asymptotic formula (as well as an interesting exact formula): lim d → ∞ B W g 3 − g = n + 1 3 ( n − 1 ) 2 , \begin{equation*} \lim _{d\to \infty }\frac {BW}{g^{3}-g}=\frac {n+1}{3(n-1)^{2}}, \end{equation*} where g g is the genus of the curve. In the case that n = 3 n=3 (cyclic trigonal curves), we are able to show in most cases that for sufficiently large primes p p , the branch points and the non-branch Weierstrass points remain distinct modulo p p .

Abstract:For proper stacks, unlike schemes, there is a distinction between rational and integral points. Moreover, rational points have extra automorphism groups. We show that these distinctions exactly account for the lower order main terms appearing in precise counts of elliptic curves over function fields, answering a question of Venkatesh in this case. More generally, using the theory of twisted stable maps and the stacky height functions recently introduced by Ellenberg, Zureick-Brown, and the third author, we construct finite type moduli spaces which parametrize rational points of fixed height on a large class of stacks, so-called cyclotomic stacks. The main tool is a correspondence between rational points, twisted maps and weighted linear series. Along the way, we obtain the Northcott property as well as a generalization of Tate's algorithm for cyclotomic stacks, and compute the exact motives of these moduli spaces for weighted projective stacks.

Abstract:<p> We give an upper bound on the number of rational points of an arbitrary Zariski closed subset of a projective space over a finite field <math alttext="bold upper F Subscript q"> <semantics> <msub> <mrow> <mi mathvariant="bold">F</mi> </mrow> <mi>q</mi> </msub> <annotation>\mathbf {F}_q</annotation> </semantics> </math> . This bound depends only on the dimensions and degrees of the irreducible components and holds for very general projective varieties, even reducible and nonequidimensional. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Ghorpade and Lachaud on the maximal number of rational points of an equidimensional projective variety. </p>

Abstract:Let $X$ be a projective variety over a number field $K$ endowed with a height function associated to an ample line bundle on $X$. Given an algebraic extension $F$ of $K$ with a sufficiently big Northcott number, we can show that there are finitely many cycles in $X_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}$ of bounded degree defined over $F$. Fields $F$ with the required properties were explicitly constructed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2107.09027" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2107.09027">arXiv:2107.09027</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2204.04446" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2204.04446">arXiv:2204.04446</a>, motivating our investigation. We point out explicit specializations to canonical heights associated to abelian varieties and selfmaps of $\mathbb{P}^n$. We apply similar methods to the study of CM-points. As a crucial tool, we introduce a refinement of Northcott's theorem.

Abstract:Let $X \subset \mathbb{P}(w_0, w_1, w_2, w_3)$ be a quasismooth well-formed weighted projective hypersurface and let $L = lcm(w_0,w_1,w_2,w_3)$. We characterize when $X$ is rational under the assumption that $L$ divides $deg(X)$ by combining an algebraic proof of rationality valid in all dimensions with a new result on numerical semigroups. As applications, we give new examples of families of normal projective rational varieties with quotient singularities and ample canonical divisor; we also determine precisely which affine Pham-Brieskorn threefolds are rational.

Abstract:We give upper bounds for the number of rational points of bounded anti-canonical height on del Pezzo surfaces of degree at most five over any global field whose characteristic is not equal to two or three. For number fields these results are conditional on a conjecture relating the rank of an elliptic curve to its conductor, while they are unconditional in positive characteristic. For quartic or quintic del Pezzo surfaces with a conic bundle structure, we establish even stronger estimates unconditionally as long as the characteristic is not two.

Abstract:We prove Manin's conjecture for split smooth quintic del Pezzo surfaces over arbitrary number fields with respect to fairly general anticanonical height functions. After passing to universal torsors, we first show that we may restrict the torsor variables to their typical sizes, and then we can solve the counting problem in the framework of o-minimal structures.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over a number field $K$ and let $\varphi: X \to X$ a polarized endomorphism of degree $d \geq 2$. Let $\widehat{h}_{\varphi}$ be the canonical height associated to $\varphi$ on $X(\overline{K})$. Given a generic sequence of points $(x_n)$ with $\widehat{h}_{\varphi}(x_n) \to 0$ and a place $v \in M_K$, Yuan [Yua08] has shown that the conjugates of $x_n$ equidistribute to the canonical measure $\mu_{\varphi,v}$. When $v$ is archimedean, we will prove a quantitative version of Yuan's result. We give two applications of our result to polarized endomorphisms $\varphi$ of smooth projective surfaces that are defined over a number field $K$. The first is an exponential rate of convergence for periodic points of period $n$ to the equilibrium measure and the second is an exponential lower bound on the degree of the extension containing all periodic points of period $n$. When $X$ is an abelian variety, we also give an upper bound on the smallest degree of a hypersurface that contains all points $x \in X(\overline{K})$ satisfying $[K(x):K] \leq D$ and $\widehat{h}_X(x) \leq \frac{c}{D^8}$ for some fixed constant $c > 0$ where $\widehat{h}_X$ is the Neron--Tate height for $X$.

Abstract:We introduce and study smooth compactifications of the moduli space of n labeled points with weights in projective space, which have normal crossings boundary and are defined as GIT quotients of the weighted Fulton-MacPherson compactification. We show that the GIT quotient of a wonderful compactification is also a wonderful compactification under certain hypotheses. We also study a weighted version of the configuration spaces parametrizing n points in affine space up to translation and homothety. In dimension one, the above compactifications are isomorphic to Hassett's moduli space of rational weighted stable curves.
