Abstract:We describe a straightforward construction of the pseudo-split absolutely pseudo-simple groups of minimal type with irreducible root systems of type $BC_n$; these exist only in characteristic $2$. We also give a formula for the dimensions of their irreducible modules.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a field. We investigate the relationship between subgroups of a pseudo-reductive $k$-group $G$ and its maximal reductive quotient $G'$, with applications to the subgroup structure of $G$. Let $k'/k$ be the minimal field of definition for the geometric unipotent radical of $G$, and let $\pi':G_{k'} \to G'$ be the quotient map. We first characterise those smooth subgroups $H$ of $G$ for which $\pi'(H_{k'})=G'$. We next consider the following questions: given a subgroup $H'$ of $G'$, does there exist a subgroup $H$ of $G$ such that $\pi'(H_{k'})=H'$, and if $H'$ is smooth can we find such a $H$ that is smooth? We find sufficient conditions for a positive answer to these questions. In general there are various obstructions to the existence of such a subgroup $H$, which we illustrate with several examples. Finally, we apply these results to relate the maximal smooth subgroups of $G$ with those of $G'$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of exceptional type over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$. This paper continues a long-standing effort to classify the connected reductive subgroups of $G$. Having previously completed the classification when $p$ is sufficiently large, we focus here on the case that $p$ is bad for $G$. We classify the connected reductive subgroups of $G$ which are not $G$-completely reducible, whose simple components have rank at least $3$. For each such subgroup $X$, we determine the action of $X$ on the adjoint module $L(G)$ and on a minimal non-trivial $G$-module, and the connected centraliser of $X$ in $G$. As corollaries we obtain information on: subgroups which are maximal among connected reductive subgroups; products of commuting $G$-completely reducible subgroups; subgroups with trivial connected centraliser; and subgroups which act indecomposably on an adjoint or minimal module for $G$.

On $B$-root subgroups on horospherical varieties

Abstract:Given a connected reductive algebraic group $G$ and a spherical $G$-variety $X$, a $B$-root subgroup on $X$ is a one-parameter additive group of automorphisms of $X$ normalized by a Borel subgroup $B \subset G$. We obtain a complete description of all $B$-root subgroups on a certain open subset of $X$. When $X$ is horospherical and either complete or contains a unique closed $G$-orbit, we determine all $G$-stable prime divisors in $X$ that can be connected with the open $G$-orbit via the action of a suitable $B$-root subgroup.

Let $\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{k} \oplus \mathfrak{p}$ and $\mathfrak{h} = \mathfrak{t} \oplus \mathfrak{a}$ be the corresponding complexifications. Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. Given an indecomposable G-module $M$, one can ask when it remains indecomposable upon restriction to the Frobenius kernel $G_r$, and when its $G_r$-socle is simple (the latter being a strictly stronger condition than the former). In this paper, we investigate these questions for $G$ having an irreducible root system of type A. Using Schur functors and inverse Schur functors as our primary tools, we develop new methods of attacking these problems, and in the process obtain new results about classes of Weyl modules, induced modules, and tilting modules that remain indecomposable over $G_r$.

Lower bounds on the essential dimension of reductive groups

Abstract:We introduce a new technique for proving lower bounds on the essential dimension of split reductive groups. As an application, we strengthen the best previously known lower bounds for various split simple algebraic groups, most notably for the exceptional group $E_8$. In the case of the projective linear group $\operatorname{PGL}_n$, we recover A. Merkurjev's celebrated lower bound with a simplified proof. Our technique relies on decompositions of loop torsors over valued fields due to P. Gille and A. Pianzolla.

Abstract: Let $G$ be a real reductive group in Harish-Chandra's class. We derive some consequences of theory of coherent continuation representations to the counting of irreducible representations of $G$ with a given infinitesimal character and a given bound of the complex associated variety. When $G$ is a real classical group (including the real metaplectic group), we investigate the set of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$, in the sense of Arthur and Barbasch-Vogan. Here $\check{\mathcal O}$ is a nilpotent adjoint orbit in the Langlands dual of $G$ (or the metaplectic dual of $G$ when $G$ is a real metaplectic group). We give a precise count for the number of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{ \mathcal O}$. We also reduce the problem of constructing special unipotent representations attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$ to the case when $\check{\mathcal O}$ is analytically even (equivalently for a real classical group, has good parity in the sense of M{\oe}glin). The paper is the first in a series of two papers on the classification of special unipotent representations of real classical groups.
Root systems for asymmetric geometric representations of Coxeter groups

Abstract:Results are obtained concerning the roots of asymmetric geometric representations of Coxeter groups. These representations were independently introduced by Vinberg and Eriksson, and generalize the standard geometric representation of a Coxeter group in such a way as to include all Kac--Moody Weyl groups. In particular, a characterization of when a non-trivial multiple of a root may also be a root is given in the general context. Characterizations of when the number of such multiples of a root is finite and when the number of positive roots sent to negative roots by a group element is finite are also given. These characterizations are stated in terms of combinatorial conditions on a graph closely related to the Coxeter graph for the group. Other finiteness results for the symmetric case which are connected to the Tits cone and to a natural partial order on positive roots are extended to this asymmetric setting.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent advances in the categorification of the cluster structure on the coordinate rings of Grassmannians of $k$-subspaces in $n$-space, we investigate a particular construction of root systems of type $\mathsf{T}_{2,p,q}$, including the type $\mathsf{E}_n$. This construction generalizes Manin's ``hyperbolic construction'' of $\mathsf{E}_8$ and reveals a lot of otherwise hidden regularities in this family of root systems.

Abstract:Any maximal root subsystem of a finite crystallographic reduced root system is either a closed root subsystem or its dual is a closed root subsystem in the dual root system. In this article, we classify the maximal root subsystems of an affine reflection system (reduced and non-reduced) and prove that this result holds in much more generality for reduced affine reflection systems. Moreover, we explicitly determine when a maximal root subsystem is a maximal closed root subsystem. Using our classification, at the end, we characterize the maximal root systems of affine reflection systems with nullity less than or equal to $2$ using Hermite normal forms; especially for Saito's EARS of nullity $2.$ This in turn classifies the maximal subgroups of the Weyl group of an affine reflection system that are generated by reflections.

Abstract:This paper is a sequel to work of Dynkin on subroot lattices of root lattices and to work of Carter on presentations of Weyl group elements as products of reflections. The quotients $L/L_1$ are calculated for all irreducible root lattices $L$ and all subroot lattices $L_1$. The reduced (i.e. those with minimal number of reflections) presentations of Weyl group elements as products of arbitrary reflections are classified. Also nonreduced presentations are studied. Quasi Coxeter elements and strict quasi Coxeter elements are defined and classified. An application to extended affine root lattices is given. A side result is that any set of roots which generates the root lattice contains a $Z$-basis of the root lattice.

Abstract:Suppose $G$ is a simple algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field of good characteristic $p$. In 2018 Korhonen showed that if $H$ is a connected reductive subgroup of $G$ which contains a distinguished unipotent element $u$ of $G$ of order $p$, then $H$ is $G$-irreducible in the sense of Serre. We present a short and uniform proof of this result under an extra hypothesis using so-called good $A_1$ subgroups of $G$, introduced by Seitz. In the process we prove some new results about good $A_1$ subgroups of $G$ and their properties. We also formulate a counterpart of Korhonen's theorem for overgroups of $u$ which are finite groups of Lie type. Moreover, we generalize both results above by removing the restriction on the order of $u$ under a mild condition on $p$ depending on the rank of $G$, and we present an analogue of Korhonen's theorem for Lie algebras.

Abstract:In this paper, we study rationality properties of reductive group actions which are defined over an arbitrary field of characteristic zero. Thereby, we unify Luna's theory of spherical systems and Borel-Tits' theory of reductive groups. In particular, we define for any reductive group action a generalized Tits index whose main constituents are a root system and a generalization of the anisotropic kernel. The index controls to a large extent the behavior at infinity (i.e., embeddings). For k-spherical varieties (i.e., where a minimal parabolic has an open orbit) we obtain explicit (wonderful) completions of the set of rational points. For local fields this means honest compactifications generalizing the maximal Satake compactification of a symmetric space. Our main tool is a k-version of the local structure theorem.

Abstract:We study irreducible restrictions from modules over symmetric groups to subgroups. We get reduction results which substantially restrict the classes of subgroups and modules for which this is possible. Such results are known when the characteristic of the ground field is greater than $3$, but the small characteristics cases require a substantially more delicate analysis and new ideas. This work fits into the Aschbacher-Scott program on maximal subgroups of finite classical groups.

Abstract:Certain results on representations of quivers have analogs in the structure theory of general Coxeter groups. A fixed Coxeter element turns the Coxeter graph into an acyclic quiver, allowing for the definition of a preprojective root. A positive root is an analog of an indecomposable representation of the quiver. The Coxeter group is finite if and only if every positive root is preprojective, which is analogous to the well-known result that a quiver is of finite representation type if and only if every indecomposable representation is preprojective. Combinatorics of orientation-admissible words in the graph monoid of the Coxeter graph relates strongly to reduced words and the weak order of the group.

Abstract:Given a connected isotropic reductive not necessarily split $k$-group $\mathcal{G}$ with irreducible relative root system, we construct root group data (RGD) system of affine type for significant subgroups of $\mathcal{G}(k[t,t^{-1}])$, which can be extended to the whole group $\mathcal{G}(k[t,t^{-1}])$ under certain additional requirements. We rely on the relative pinning maps from paper "Elementary subgroups of isotropic reductive groups" by V. Petrov and A. Stavrova to construct the affine root groups. To verify the RGD axioms, we utilize the properties of the affine root groups, and the properties of reflections associated with the $k$-roots of $\mathcal{G}$.

Restriction Theorems and Root Systems for Symmetric Superspaces

Abstract:In this paper we consider those involutions $\theta$ of a finite-dimensional Kac-Moody Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak g$, with associated decomposition $\mathfrak g=\mathfrak k\oplus\mathfrak p$, for which a Cartan subspace $\mathfrak a$ in $\mathfrak p_{\bar 0}$ is self-centralizing in $\mathfrak p$. For such $\theta$ the restriction map $C_\theta$ from $\mathfrak p$ to $\mathfrak a$ is injective on the algebra $P(\mathfrak p)^{\mathfrak k}$ of $\mathfrak k$-invariant polynomials on $\mathfrak p$. There are five infinite families and five exceptional cases of such involutions, and for each case we explicitly determine the structure of $P(\mathfrak p)^{\mathfrak k}$ by giving a complete set of generators for the image of $C_\theta$. We also determine precisely when the restriction map $R_\theta$ from $P(\mathfrak g)^{\mathfrak g}$ to $P(\mathfrak p)^{\mathfrak k}$ is surjective. Finally we introduce the notion of a generalized restricted root system, and show that in the present setting the $\mathfrak a$-roots $\Delta(\mathfrak a,\mathfrak g)$ always form such a system.

Reduction to depth zero for tame p-adic groups via Hecke algebra isomorphisms

Abstract:Let $F$ be a nonarchimedean local field of residual characteristic $p$. Let $G$ denote a connected reductive group over $F$ that splits over a tamely ramified extension of $F$. Let $(K ,\rho)$ be a type as constructed by Kim and Yu. We show that there exists a twisted Levi subgroup $G^0 \subset G$ and a type $(K^0, \rho^0)$ for $G^0$ such that the corresponding Hecke algebras $\mathcal{H}(G(F), (K, \rho))$ and $\mathcal{H}(G^0(F), (K^0, \rho^0))$ are isomorphic. If $p$ does not divide the order of the absolute Weyl group of $G$, then every Bernstein block is equivalent to modules over such a Hecke algebra. Hence, under this assumption on $p$, our result implies that every Bernstein block is equivalent to a depth-zero Bernstein block. This allows one to reduce many problems about (the category of) smooth, complex representations of $p$-adic groups to analogous problems about (the category of) depth-zero representations. Our isomorphism of Hecke algebras is very explicit and also includes an explicit description of the Hecke algebras as semi-direct products of an affine Hecke with a twisted group algebra. Moreover, we work with arbitrary algebraically closed fields of characteristic different from $p$ as our coefficient field. This paper relies on a prior axiomatic result about the structure of Hecke algebras by the same authors and a key ingredient consists of extending the quadratic character of Fintzen--Kaletha--Spice to the support of the Hecke algebra, which might be of independent interest.
