Abstract:Any maximal root subsystem of a finite crystallographic reduced root system is either a closed root subsystem or its dual is a closed root subsystem in the dual root system. In this article, we classify the maximal root subsystems of an affine reflection system (reduced and non-reduced) and prove that this result holds in much more generality for reduced affine reflection systems. Moreover, we explicitly determine when a maximal root subsystem is a maximal closed root subsystem. Using our classification, at the end, we characterize the maximal root systems of affine reflection systems with nullity less than or equal to $2$ using Hermite normal forms; especially for Saito's EARS of nullity $2.$ This in turn classifies the maximal subgroups of the Weyl group of an affine reflection system that are generated by reflections.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to classify the maximal root subsystems of affine reflection systems and explore the relationship between these maximal root subsystems and the maximal reflection subgroups of the Weyl group. Specifically, the main contributions of the paper include: 1. **Classification of maximal root subsystems**: The paper classifies the maximal root subsystems of irreducible reduced and non - reduced affine reflection systems. For the reduced case, according to different gradient types, the paper gives the classification results in Theorem 3 and Theorem 4 respectively; for the non - reduced affine reflection systems, the classification is given in Theorem 6. 2. **Description of closure properties**: The paper clearly describes when a maximal root subsystem is a closed root subsystem, which is given in Table 1 (for the reduced case) and Remark 10 (for the non - reduced case) respectively. 3. **Generalization of known results**: The paper proves a similar result, that is, in a reduced and irreducible affine reflection system, if \(\Psi\) is a maximal root subsystem, then either \(\Psi\) is closed or its dual \(\Psi^{\vee}\) is closed (see Theorem 5). This result is a generalization of the known results in the finite - dimensional case. 4. **Application to specific affine reflection systems**: In the last part of the paper, these classification results are applied to affine reflection systems with nullity not exceeding 2, especially Saito's EARS (Extended Affine Root Systems), and the classification is carried out using the Hermite normal form. Through these studies, the paper not only deepens the understanding of the structure of affine reflection systems, but also provides new perspectives and tools for studying the maximal reflection subgroups of the Weyl groups of these systems.
