Abstract:We introduce the use of Fourier analysis on lattices as an integral part of a lattice based construction. The tools we develop provide an elegant description of certain Gaussian distributions around lattice points. Our results include two cryptographic constructions which are based on the worst-case hardness of the unique shortest vector problem. The main result is a new public key cryptosystem whose security guarantee is considerably stronger than previous results ($O(n^{1.5})$ instead of $O(n^7)$). This provides the first alternative to Ajtai and Dwork's original 1996 cryptosystem. Our second result is a family of collision resistant hash functions which, apart from improving the security in terms of the unique shortest vector problem, is also the first example of an analysis which is not based on Ajtai's iterative step. Surprisingly, both results are derived from one theorem which presents two indistinguishable distributions on the segment $[0,1)$. It seems that this theorem can have further applications and as an example we mention how it can be used to solve an open problem related to quantum computation.

Abstract:For a profinite group $G$ and a rigid analytic space $X$, we study when an $\mathcal O_X(X)$-linear representation $V$ of $G$ admits a lattice, i.e. an $\mathcal O_{\mathcal X}(\mathcal X)$-linear model for a suitable formal model $\mathcal X$ of $X$ in the sense of Berthelot. We give a positive answer, under mild assumptions, when $X$ is a ``wide open'' space. As a consequence, we are able to describe explicit open rational subdomains of $X$ over which $V$ is constant after reduction modulo a power of $p$. We give applications in two different directions. First, we prove explicit results on the reduction modulo powers of $p$ of sheaves of crystalline and semistable representations of fixed weight. Second, we focus on the sheaves of Galois representations on eigenvarieties, which are important examples of wide open spaces thanks to a result of Bellaïche and Chenevier. We give an application of our main results to the pseudorepresentation carried by the Coleman--Mazur eigencurve, which can be made explicit whenever equations for a rational subdomain of the eigencurve are given.

Abstract:In recent decades, the use of ideas from Minkowski's Geometry of Numbers has gained recognition as a helpful tool in bounding the number of solutions to modular congruences with variables from short intervals. In 1941, Mahler introduced an analogue to the Geometry of Numbers in function fields over finite fields. Here, we build on Mahler's ideas and develop results useful for bounding the sizes of intersections of lattices and convex bodies in $\mathbb{F}_q((1/T))^d$, which are more precise than what is known over $\mathbb{R}^d$. These results are then applied to various problems regarding bounding the number of solutions to congruences in $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$, such as the number of points on polynomial curves in low dimensional subspaces of finite fields. Our results improve on a number of previous bounds due to Bagshaw, Cilleruelo, Shparlinski and Zumalacárregui. We also present previous techniques developed by various authors for estimating certain energy/point counts in a unified manner.

Abstract:In this article we study two fundamental problems on exponential sums via randomization of frequencies with stochastic processes. These are the Hardy-Littlewood majorant problem, and $L^{2n}(\mathbb{T}), \ n\in \mathbb{N}$ norms of exponential sums, which can also be interpreted as solutions of diophantine equations or lattice points on surfaces. We establish connections to the well known problems on lattice points in regions such as the Dirichlet divisor problem.

Abstract:Bliem and Kousidis recently considered a family of random variables whose distributions are given by the generalized Galois numbers (after normalization). We give probabilistic interpretations of these random variables, using inversions in random words, random lattice paths and random Ferrers diagrams, and use these to give new proofs of limit theorems as well as some further limit results.
Learning Constant-Depth Circuits in Malicious Noise Models

Abstract:The seminal work of Linial, Mansour, and Nisan gave a quasipolynomial-time algorithm for learning constant-depth circuits ($\mathsf{AC}^0$) with respect to the uniform distribution on the hypercube. Extending their algorithm to the setting of malicious noise, where both covariates and labels can be adversarially corrupted, has remained open. Here we achieve such a result, inspired by recent work on learning with distribution shift. Our running time essentially matches their algorithm, which is known to be optimal assuming various cryptographic primitives. Our proof uses a simple outlier-removal method combined with Braverman's theorem for fooling constant-depth circuits. We attain the best possible dependence on the noise rate and succeed in the harshest possible noise model (i.e., contamination or so-called "nasty noise").

Abstract: The LLL algorithm, despite its ubiquity and celebrity over the past 37 years, has never been properly understood so far. In this paper, we argue that LLL behaves essentially identically to a certain stochastic variant of the sandpile model that we introduce here, and that this observation explains many of its major folklore mysteries at once, in particular the well-known discrepancy between its worst- and average-case output quality. This result represents one of the first steps toward a scientific understanding of the practical behavior of lattice reduction algorithms. Its impact is most deeply felt in the area of post-quantum cryptography, in particular lattice-based cryptography, where it is of critical importance to correctly evaluate the strength of lattice reduction algorithms.
Construction of interlaced scrambled polynomial lattice rules of arbitrary high order

Abstract:Higher order scrambled digital nets are randomized quasi-Monte Carlo rules which have recently been introduced in [J. Dick, Ann. Statist., 39 (2011), 1372--1398] and shown to achieve the optimal rate of convergence of the root mean square error for numerical integration of smooth functions defined on the $s$-dimensional unit cube. The key ingredient there is a digit interlacing function applied to the components of a randomly scrambled digital net whose number of components is $ds$, where the integer $d$ is the so-called interlacing factor. In this paper, we replace the randomly scrambled digital nets by randomly scrambled polynomial lattice point sets, which allows us to obtain a better dependence on the dimension while still achieving the optimal rate of convergence. Our results apply to Owen's full scrambling scheme as well as the simplifications studied by Hickernell, Matoušek and Owen. We consider weighted function spaces with general weights, whose elements have square integrable partial mixed derivatives of order up to $\alpha\ge 1$, and derive an upper bound on the variance of the estimator for higher order scrambled polynomial lattice rules. Employing our obtained bound as a quality criterion, we prove that the component-by-component construction can be used to obtain explicit constructions of good polynomial lattice point sets. By first constructing classical polynomial lattice point sets in base $b$ and dimension $ds$, to which we then apply the interlacing scheme of order $d$, we obtain a construction cost of the algorithm of order $\mathcal{O}(dsmb^m)$ operations using $\mathcal{O}(b^m)$ memory in case of product weights, where $b^m$ is the number of points in the polynomial lattice point set.

Abstract:We develop the theory of the edge coloring of infinite lattice graphs, proving a necessary and sufficient condition for a proper edge coloring of a patch of a lattice graph to induce a proper edge coloring of the entire lattice graph by translation. This condition forms the cornerstone of a method that finds nearly minimal or minimal edge colorings of infinite lattice graphs. In case a nearly minimal edge coloring is requested, the running time is $O(\mu^2 D^4)$, where $\mu$ is the number of edges in one cell (or `basis graph') of the lattice graph and $D$ is the maximum distance between two cells so that there is an edge from within one cell to the other. In case a minimal edge coloring is requested, we lack an upper bound on the running time, which we find need not pose a limitation in practice; we use the method to minimal edge color the meshes of all $k$-uniform tilings of the plane for $k\leq 6$, while utilizing modest computational resources. We find that all these lattice graphs are Vizing class~I. Relating edge colorings to quantum circuits, our work finds direct application by offering minimal-depth quantum circuits in the areas of quantum simulation, quantum optimization, and quantum state verification.

Abstract:Our main result is a reduction from worst-case lattice problems such as GapSVP and SIVP to a certain learning problem. This learning problem is a natural extension of the `learning from parity with error' problem to higher moduli. It can also be viewed as the problem of decoding from a random linear code. This, we believe, gives a strong indication that these problems are hard. Our reduction, however, is quantum. Hence, an efficient solution to the learning problem implies a quantum algorithm for GapSVP and SIVP. A main open question is whether this reduction can be made classical (i.e., non-quantum).

Abstract:In this work, we introduce a definition of the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) on Euclidean lattices in $\R^n$, that generalizes the $n$-th fold DFT of the integer lattice $\Z^n$ to arbitrary lattices. This definition is not applicable for every lattice, but can be defined on lattices known as Systematic Normal Form (SysNF) introduced in \cite{ES16}. Systematic Normal Form lattices are sets of integer vectors that satisfy a single homogeneous modular equation, which itself satisfies a certain number-theoretic property. Such lattices form a dense set in the space of $n$-dimensional lattices, and can be used to approximate efficiently any lattice. This implies that for every lattice $L$ a DFT can be computed efficiently on a lattice near $L$. Our proof of the statement above uses arguments from quantum computing, and as an application of our definition we show a quantum algorithm for sampling from discrete distributions on lattices, that extends our ability to sample efficiently from the discrete Gaussian distribution \cite{GPV08} to any distribution that is sufficiently "smooth". We conjecture that studying the eigenvectors of the newly-defined lattice DFT may provide new insights into the structure of lattices, especially regarding hard computational problems, like the shortest vector problem.
Optimization and Identification of Lattice Quantizers

Abstract:Lattices with minimal normalized second moments are designed using a new numerical optimization algorithm. Starting from a random lower-triangular generator matrix and applying stochastic gradient descent, all elements are updated towards the negative gradient, which makes it the most efficient algorithm proposed so far for this purpose. A graphical illustration of the theta series, called theta image, is introduced and shown to be a powerful tool for converting numerical lattice representations into their underlying exact forms. As a proof of concept, optimized lattices are designed in dimensions up to 16. In all dimensions, the algorithm converges to either the previously best known lattice or a better one. The dual of the 15-dimensional laminated lattice is conjectured to be optimal in its dimension and its exact normalized second moment is computed.

Abstract:We introduce a new canonical form of lattices called the systematic normal form (SNF). We show that for every lattice there is an efficiently computable "nearby" SNF lattice, such that for any lattice one can solve lattice problems on its "nearby" SNF lattice, and translate the solutions back efficiently to the original lattice. The SNF provides direct connections between arbitrary lattices, and various lattice related problems like the Shortest-Integer-Solution, Approximate Greatest Common Divisor. As our main application of SNF we derive a new set of worst-to-average case lattice reductions that deviate significantly from the template of Ajtai and improve upon previous reductions in terms of simplicity.

Abstract:Zeckendorf's Theorem states that any positive integer can be written uniquely as a sum of non-adjacent Fibonacci numbers. We consider higher-dimensional lattice analogues, where a legal decomposition of a number $n$ is a collection of lattice points such that each point is included at most once. Once a point is chosen, all future points must have strictly smaller coordinates, and the pairwise sum of the values of the points chosen equals $n$. We prove that the distribution of the number of summands in these lattice decompositions converges to a Gaussian distribution in any number of dimensions. As an immediate corollary we obtain a new proof for the asymptotic number of certain lattice paths.

Abstract:We construct a point set in the Euclidean plane that elucidates the relationship between the fine-scale statistics of the fractional parts of $\sqrt n$ and directional statistics for a shifted lattice. We show that the randomly rotated, and then stretched, point set converges in distribution to a lattice-like random point process. This follows closely the arguments in Elkies and McMullen's original analysis for the gap statistics of $\sqrt{n}$ mod 1 in terms of random affine lattices [Duke Math. J. 123 (2004), 95-139]. There is, however, a curious subtlety: the limit process emerging in our construction is NOT invariant under the standard $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$-action on $\mathbb{R}^2$.

Abstract:Analogous to subfactor theory, employing Watatani's notions of index and $C^*$-basic construction of certain inclusions of $C^*$-algebras, (a) we develop a Fourier theory (consisting of Fourier transforms, rotation maps and shift operators) on the relative commutants of any inclusion of simple unital $C^*$-algebras with finite Watatani index, and (b) we introduce the notions of interior and exterior angles between intermediate $C^*$-subalgebras of any inclusion of unital $C^*$-algebras admitting a finite index conditional expectation. Then, on the lines of [2], we apply these concepts to obtain a bound for the cardinality of the lattice of intermediate $C^*$-subalgebras of any irreducible inclusion as in (a), and improve Longo's bound for the cardinality of intermediate subfactors of an inclusion of type $III$ factors with finite index. Moreover, we also show that for a fairly large class of inclusions of finite von Neumann algebras, the lattice of intermediate von Neumann subalgebras is always finite.

Abstract:A lattice quantizer approximates an arbitrary real-valued source vector with a vector taken from a specific discrete lattice. The quantization error is the difference between the source vector and the lattice vector. In a classic 1996 paper, Zamir and Feder show that the globally optimal lattice quantizer (which minimizes the mean square error) has white quantization error: for a uniformly distributed source, the covariance of the error is the identity matrix, multiplied by a positive real factor. We generalize the theorem, showing that the same property holds (i) for any lattice whose mean square error cannot be decreased by a small perturbation of the generator matrix, and (ii) for an optimal product of lattices that are themselves locally optimal in the sense of (i). We derive an upper bound on the normalized second moment (NSM) of the optimal lattice in any dimension, by proving that any lower- or upper-triangular modification to the generator matrix of a product lattice reduces the NSM. Using these tools and employing the best currently known lattice quantizers to build product lattices, we construct improved lattice quantizers in dimensions 13 to 15, 17 to 23, and 25 to 48. In some dimensions, these are the first reported lattices with normalized second moments below the best known upper bound.

Abstract:This paper introduces the order-theoretic concept of lattices along with the concept of consistent quantification where lattice elements are mapped to real numbers in such a way that preserves some aspect of the order-theoretic structure. Symmetries, such as associativity, constrain consistent quantification and lead to a constraint equation known as the sum rule. Distributivity in distributive lattices also constrains consistent quantification and leads to a product rule. The sum and product rules, which are familiar from, but not unique to, probability theory, arise from the fact that logical statements form a distributive (Boolean) lattice, which exhibits the requisite symmetries.
