Abstract:It has been shown that spaces of geodesic triangulations of surfaces with negative curvature are contractible. Here we propose an approach aiming to prove that the spaces of geodesic triangulations of a surface with negative curvature are homeomorphic to Euclidean spaces $\mathbb{R}^n$.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.
The Deformation Spaces of Geodesic Triangulations of Flat Tori

Abstract:We prove that the deformation space of geodesic triangulations of a flat torus is homotopy equivalent to a torus. This solves an open problem proposed by Connelly et al. in 1983, in the case of flat tori. A key tool of the proof is a generalization of Tutte's embedding theorem for flat tori. When this paper is under preparation, Erickson and Lin proved a similar result, which works for all convex drawings.

Abstract:It is shown that every non-compact hyperbolic manifold of finite volume has a finite cover admitting a geodesic ideal triangulation. Also, every hyperbolic manifold of finite volume with non-empty, totally geodesic boundary has a finite regular cover which has a geodesic partially truncated triangulation. The proofs use an extension of a result due to Long and Niblo concerning the separability of peripheral subgroups.

Hyperbolic Circle Packings and Total Geodesic Curvatures on Surfaces with Boundary

Abstract:This paper investigates a generalized hyperbolic circle packing (including circles, horocycles or hypercycles) with respect to the total geodesic curvatures on the surface with boundary. We mainly focus on the existence and rigidity of circle packing whose contact graph is the $1$-skeleton of a finite polygonal cellular decomposition, which is analogous to the construction of Bobenko and Springborn [4]. Motivated by Colin de Verdière's method [6], we introduce the variational principle for generalized hyperbolic circle packings on polygons. By analyzing limit behaviours of generalized circle packings on polygons, we give an existence and rigidity for the generalized hyperbolic circle packing with conical singularities regarding the total geodesic curvature on each vertex of the contact graph. As a consequence, we introduce the combinatoral Ricci flow to find a desired circle packing with a prescribed total geodesic curvature on each vertex of the contact graph.

Abstract:Computing geodesic distances on 2-manifold meshes is a fundamental problem in computational geometry. To date, two notable classes of exact algorithms, namely, the Mitchell–Mount–Papadimitriou (MMP) algorithm and the Chen–Han (CH) algorithm, have been widely studied. For an arbitrary triangle mesh with n vertices, these algorithms have space complexity of O(n2). In this paper, we prove that both algorithms have Θ(n1.5) space complexity on a completely regular triangulation (i.e., all triangles are equilateral).
The existence of inversive distance circle packing on polyhedral surface

Abstract:We prove that for any discrete curvature satisfying Gauss-Bonnet formula, there exist a unique up to scaling inversive distance circle packing in the discrete conformal equivalent class, whose polyhedral metric meets the target curvature. We prove it by constructing diffeomorphism between fiber bundles with cell decomposition based on Teichmüller spaces, and each discrete conformal equivalent class is a fiber passing through finite cell with respect to triangulations, which means we can do surgery on the discrete Ricci flow by edge flipping using a generalized Ptolemy equation to ensure it converge and never blow up.

Abstract:Given a family of (almost) disjoint strictly convex subsets of a complete negatively curved Riemannian manifold M, such as balls, horoballs, tubular neighborhoods of totally geodesic submanifolds, etc, the aim of this paper is to construct geodesic rays or lines in M which have exactly once an exactly prescribed (big enough) penetration in one of them, and otherwise avoid (or do not enter too much in) them. Several applications are given, including a definite improvement of the unclouding problem of [PP1], the prescription of heights of geodesic lines in a finite volume such M, or of spiraling times around a closed geodesic in a closed such M. We also prove that the Hall ray phenomenon described by Hall in special arithmetic situations and by Schmidt-Sheingorn for hyperbolic surfaces is in fact only a negative curvature property.

Abstract:We study hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces with faces isometric to regular hyperbolic polygons satisfying that the total angles at vertices are at least 2 pi. The combinatorial information of these surfaces is shown to be identified with that of Euclidean polyhedral surfaces with negative combinatorial curvature everywhere. We prove that there is a gap between areas of non-smooth hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces and the area of smooth hyperbolic surfaces. The numerical result for the gap is obtained for hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces, homeomorphic to the double torus, whose 1-skeletons are cubic graphs.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A version of the singular Yamabe problem in bounded domains yields complete conformal metrics with negative constant scalar curvatures. In this paper, we study whether these metrics have negative Ricci curvatures. Affirmatively, we prove that these metrics indeed have negative Ricci curvatures in bounded convex domains in the Euclidean space. On the other hand, we provide a general construction of domains in compact manifolds and demonstrate that the negativity of Ricci curvatures does not hold if the boundary is close to certain sets of low dimension. The expansion of the Green’s function and the positive mass theorem play essential roles in certain cases.

Abstract:We prove the existence of $C^{1,1}$ isometric immersions of several classes of metrics on surfaces $(\mathcal{M},g)$ into the three-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$, where the metrics $g$ have strictly negative curvature. These include the standard hyperbolic plane, generalised helicoid-type metrics and generalised Enneper metrics. Our proof is based on the method of compensated compactness and invariant regions in hyperbolic conservation laws, together with several observations on the geometric quantities (Gauss curvature, metric components etc.) of negatively curved surfaces.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a closed hyperbolic manifold containing a totally geodesic hypersurface $S$, and let $N$ be a closed Riemannian manifold homotopy equivalent to $M$ with sectional curvature bounded above by $-1$. Then it follows from the work of Besson-Courtois-Gallot that $\pi_1(S)$ can be represented by a hypersurface $S'$ in $N$ with volume less than or equal to that of $S$. We study the equality case: if $\pi_1(S)$ cannot be represented by a hypersurface $S'$ in $N$ with volume strictly smaller than that of $S$, then must $N$ be isometric to $M$? We show that many such $S$ are rigid in the sense that the answer to this question is positive. On the other hand, we construct examples of $S$ for which the answer is negative.

Abstract:We prove that directions of closed geodesics in every dilation surface form a dense subset of the circle. The proof draws on a study of the degenerations of the Delaunay triangulation of dilation surfaces under the action of Teichmüller flow in the moduli space.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we prove quantitative results about geodesic approximations to submanifolds in negatively curved spaces. Among the main tools is a new and general Jarník–Besicovitch type theorem in Diophantine approximation. Our framework allows manifolds of variable negative curvature, a variety of geometric targets, and logarithm laws as well as spiraling phenomena in both measure and dimension aspect. Several of the results are new also for manifolds of constant negative sectional curvature. We further establish a large intersection property of Falconer in this context.

Abstract:For any non-elementary hyperbolic group $\Gamma$, we find an outer automorphism invariant geodesic bicombing for the space of metric structures on $\Gamma$ equipped with a symmetrized version of the Thurston metric on Techimüller space. We construct and study a boundary for this space and show that it contains many well-known pseudo metrics including those coming from actions on $\text{CAT}(0)$ cube complexes, real trees and coned-off Cayley graphs. As corollaries we deduce length spectrum rigidity results, regularity results for Manhattan curves, optimal growth rate results for Anosov representations and results regarding continuous extensions of translation distance functions to the space of geodesic currents. Using our results for geodesic currents we settle a conjecture of Bonahon in the negative.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{M}_{0}^n$ be the class of closed, simply-connected, non-negatively curved Riemannian manifolds admitting an isometric, effective, isotropy-maximal torus action. We prove that if $M\in \mathcal{M}_{0}^n$, then $M$ is equivariantly diffeomorphic to the free linear quotient by a torus of a product of spheres of dimensions greater than or equal to three. As an immediate consequence, we prove the Maximal Symmetry Rank Conjecture for all $M\in \mathcal{M}_{0}^n$. Finally, we show the Maximal Symmetry Rank Conjecture for simply-connected, non-negatively curved manifolds holds for dimensions less than or equal to nine without assuming the torus action is almost isotropy-maximal or isotropy-maximal.
